God Help Us All

The first ten minutes of the ride to the market was quiet, but Gabriel could just feel the tension in the air as the Impala shook slightly as it grumbled to a halt, probably a red light. He could pratically feel the question that was buzzing in Dean's head, and knew that he had come along for a different purpose rather than just helping him pick out groceries.

"Gabriel...can I ask you something?" He heard Dean ask and sat more attentive, turning his head to the general direction of the driver's seat.

"What is it? You sound worried." Gabriel asked, tipping his head. He never Dean as one to be hesitant, so the way the man spoke gave chills down the Novak's spine, making him wonder what possibly could be so bad that Dean had to be careful about it.

"Did Gadreel ever say anything about the night his parents were killed?" Dean asked, a grim tone in his voice as the Impala slowly took off again. Gabriel frowned, wondering why Dean would want to know about that.

"No, he told us he was asleep when it happened. Why do you ask?" Gabriel responded, running his hands over his jeans nervously, feeling a small thread roll under his fingers.

"I was just wondering. We never caught the killer after all." Dean responded, though there was a faint relief in his voice that had Gabriel thinking that there was something more to the story. He dropped it though and grunted in response, feeling the car pull to a stop before the engine was switched off.

"Come on. Cas asked for a lot of the things that I don't even know what the hell they are." He heard Dean say before the door to the Impala squeaked open, followed by it slamming shut a moment later. Gabriel quickly scrambled out, not wanting to be left behind, and took a couple steps towards the front of the car.

He heard a rumble of an engine and felt a hand on the back of his jacket, dragging him back as the sound of a vehicle rushed past.

"Woah there. Don't run into oncoming traffic." He heard Dean say, feeling a gentle pat on his back before he linked arms with Gabriel, leading him towards the market. Gabriel gave out a soft thank you, shivering as he imagined being hit by a car again.

The cool air welcomed them from the hot afternoon sun as they entered the market, the sound of footsteps and chatter filling Gabriel's ear, a faint ring of cash registers echoing in the lower tone of the background. This, he had to trust Dean with, the different sounds making it hard to hear exactly where he was going. Thankfully, Dean was rather adept at leading him through the aisles and around people.

"So, he wanted leeks. Isn't that some kind of vegatable?" Dean asked, pausing in his step. Gabriel felt a waft a coldness brush against his arm, and knew they were at the refridgerated aisles.

"Yeah, they look sort of like gigantic green onions that splits into three ends." Gabriel described, feeling Dean's grip slide from his arm as the man went to look. Gabriel waited patiently, until he felt a cold object brush his hand.

"These are it, right?" Dean asked, and Gabriel felt along them, trying hard to remember what leeks had felt like. Even though he was pretty good at being blind, he still had a long way to go.

"I think so." Gabriel said, nodding as Dean grabbed his arm again, hearing the soft rustle of paper following a moment later.

"Then we just have swiss and pepper jack cheese, vinagerette, and red cabbage." Dean read off, only to scoff slightly. "What the hell is red cabbage?"

"Plot twist. It's purple." Gabriel said with a smirk, making Dean groan at the stupid names of food. The Novak chuckled at the Winchester's antics, allowing the man to drag him around.

They only had a few moments of chat and walking before they heard the screaming of a woman, sending a panic through the both of them. Together, they hurried towards the noise, Gabriel struggling to keep his balance, as he heard the woman's screams become coherent.

"My husband and baby are trapped in the car! Please! They can't get out!" The woman shouted, obviously crying as she begged for help. Gabriel could smell the blood from here, making his stomach churn as Dean's grip on his arm tightened.

"I'm going to go help her. You stay here until I get back, okay?" Dean said before letting go at Gabriel's nod. There was a second where Gabriel felt completely lost, that is until he heard the sound of faint dialing of Dean's phone going on.

The minute it picked up, Dean began talking. "Officer Dean Winchester. There's been an accident at the Wal-Mart in Loxely. Three victims that I know of. Will probably need an ambulance on sight." Dean said, confirming something with the person on the line before he hung up, the sound of his footsteps drifting closer to the woman.

"Ma'am, I'm an officer. If you'll take me to the accident, I'll try to help your family." Dean said, his voice reassuring. "You two, come help us."

There was a pair of gruff voices, slightly deeper than Dean's, that responded before he heard the sound of footsteps quickly retreating. It was then that Gabriel felt completely alone, scowling as he remembered he had left his phone at home. He couldn't call anybody for help.

So, he did the best he could and slunk to the side, out of the way of people who might be walking past. His hand slid along the shelf, and he felt a warm breeze drifting in from his right, figuring he was towards the entrance.

His silence was short-lived, for he only got to relax for a few minutes when he heard more footsteps. At first, he thought it might have been Dean, but the steps were too harsh, too loud. No, it was someone else, and the sound of a gun going off proved that they were definitely not friendly.

"Everyone get down! This is a robbery!" He heard the man shout, followed by another gunshot coming to his right. He let himself lower down to his feet, his body began to shake as he realized he was all alone.

"Dean?" Gabriel risked letting out, his voice soft and scared as he listened vainly for any sound that the Winchester around. Regretabbly, Dean was still out to the wreck.

"Everybody move to the corner of the store! Nobody try to pull any bullshit on us!" He heard a different man say, and knew there was more than one robber. He whimpered, unable to move in the direction they must have pointed out to the others. He was going to die, because of his blindness.

He felt a kick on his side and whimpered, trying to shuffle away from the man, only to run into another. "What are you, deaf? We said get going!" The man he had run into spat, grabbing Gabriel by the hair and pulling him to his feet.

"I'm blind! Please, don't hurt me!" Gabriel yelped, trying to pull away from the man in a panic. The man held him tight though, cutting off any chance of getting his arm out of his grip.

There was a moment of silence, as if the two men were deciding what to do with him. Gabriel held his breath, his heart thudding in his chest as one finally sighed, tugging him to the right.

"Come on. Get with the others." The man said, being a bit more gentle as Gabriel stumbled after him, his legs shaking with fear and relief of not being killed on the spot. He felt like he might actually make it out of here alive.

The robber led him across the floors, obviously from the refridgerated aisles by the way a coolness drifted from the sides. It was only a moment before the robber pushed him, making him stumble into one of the customers, who grabbed onto him. The robber took a step back, but made no more movement as far as Gabriel could hear. He assumed that the man was guarding the customers.

"Come on!" Gabriel heard a shout come from farther away. "WE need to get these registers cleaned out before our decoy gets found out! We only have ten minutes before the cops get there!"

"Alright! Just give me a god damn minute!" Gabriel heard another man respond, his voice much more distant than the others. There was several sounds of things being thrown around in a violent manner before he heard more shuffling.

All activity was put to a halt as Gabriel heard the voice of Dean. "Gabe?!" He heard the man shout, and the robber close by began stomping towards the entrance where it came from. Gabriel held his breath, his hands shaking as he stood, following after the sound as quickly as he could.

He was several feet away when the footsteps halted, but it made him pause in his step as soon as Dean began shouting. "Police, get your hands up!" Dean shouted, and a gun being cocked made Gabriel shiver, taking a tentative step back.

"Barley! I thought you said we had more time!" He heard one of the men shout from farther away, making him step back again, stumbling over the corner of an aisleway and hitting the ground hard. Thankfully, no one seemed to notice the noise he made, as he heard no indication.

Two more pair of footsteps joined the robber's and Gabriel let out a gasp as he realized what that meant. Dean was three to one. He whimpered, his hand moving outwards, searching for a ledge to pull himself up.

"No one's stopping us." He heard one of the robber's say, Barley, if he wasn't mistaken by the voice. Gabriel barely had time to let that sink in before he heard two gunshots go off, followed by a scream, and a body thumping to the floor.

"Shit! He got Jacob! Come on! We have to get out of here before more show up!" He heard Barley say before the sound of two footsteps pounded out of the Wal-Mart, and Gabriel was left in total shock.

"Dean?" Gabriel was finally able to call, his voice quivering as he crawled forwards, only to flinch away when he felt the unmistakable sticky liquid of blood. "Dean?!"

A hand reached out and grabbed him, making him jump but soon let out a sigh of relief. Dean was alive.

"Help...me..." He heard the man say, freezing as he realized that it wasn't Dean's voice. He jerked away, letting out a gasp mixed with a scream and careening backwards away from the man, his hand brushing against hair, soft yet quickly clumping together under his touch. With heavy breaths, he reached out, feeling along the person's face.

It was Dean.
