Discrimination is Blind

Gabriel sat in front of the principal of the school, his face stoic under the piteous looks the man was giving him. A student and his parents sat beside them, the woman warily watching the history teacher with distrustful eyes. Gabriel knew why he was here, yet it made his heart sting when the principal spoke.

"You understand why I've called you in here today, Gabriel? There have been some...complaints and accusations thrown your way, and I just want to clarify what is going on." The principal said, obviously uncomfortable about the whole situation. Gabriel just sighed, leaning back in the chair while the family sat straighter, accusing looks in their eyes.

"Ask away." Gabriel said, letting out a defeated sigh. He prepared himself, not to face this discrimination, but rather explain to Sam why he had lost his job. The principal looked down at his desk, straightening some papers before motioning to the family.

"I received a call this morning from this family. According to their son, you are known to be polygamous relationship with two separate men. Is he correct in his accusations?" The principal asked, rubbing the back of his neck as if he was embarrassed about having to question one of his teachers.

"It is true." Gabriel said, his voice casual as the principal's head shot up, staring at the history teacher in shock. The family shifted away ever so slightly, but Gabriel pretended to not notice.

"I-I see." The principal said, looking even more uncomfortable than before. Gabriel sighed and looked at the ceiling, ignoring the distrusting looks from the woman sitting beside him. "Are you aware that this could cause...discomfort among our students?"

Gabriel looked at the principal, a hard look in his eyes. "No, I am not aware of that." Gabriel replied, a warning in his voice that hadn't been there before.

"Surely you must know that you are a problem for our son. I don't want a gay man being anywhere near him." The woman snapped, her hotheaded looks only adding to the ferocity of her voice. Gabriel stared at her with an arched eyebrow.

"Ma'am, I assume that you are not aware, but there are straight male teachers at this school, yet girls don't have to do that? I am a gay man, but I'm in a perfectly happy relationship, so why exactly would I be a distraction? The adoption agency didn't have a problem with our relationship, my six year old twins don't, my brother doesn't, no one cares who I love, so why should you?" Gabriel asked, a pained look coming to his face as he thought of losing his job because of this family.

Gabriel found it ironic when he looked at the teen, and realized who it was. It was hard not to let out a snort as he remembered catching the kid making out with his boyfriend in the janitor's closet. He didn't say anything though. He would be secretive too if he had parents like this.

The principal held up his hand for silence. "Gabriel, I'm aware that this is a very irritating moment for you. I, for one, would not fire you over something as simple as this. However, I must take it to the board for them to decide. Trust me, I will fight for you the best I can. You are, after all, the best teacher we've had in a long time." The principal said, a moment of silence spreading through the room. Gabriel couldn't help but smirk as he saw the woman's offended gaze as the principal looked at her.

"Can I speak to the student and Mr. Novak for a moment please?" The principal asked politely, but it was firm. Gabriel knew that voice well. The suggestion was actually an order, and the husband and wife were to listen. They left the room, but not before the woman sent him a glare over her shoulder.

As soon as the door closed, the teen burst into tears, looking at Gabriel with anger and sadness. "I'm so sorry, Mr. Novak" The kid cried, his face turning slightly red as he tried to keep the flooding tears at bay. "I was so excited when I heard that I told my friend over the phone and my parents overheard. They got so mad, and I tried to stop them but they wouldn't listen."

Gabriel looked at the boy in surprise, not expecting that at all. His eyes soon softened and he couldn't help but smile as he realized that the boy had not done it out of hatred. He reached over, placing his hand on the boy's shoulder comforting and squeezing it.

"It'll be okay." Gabriel said, his voice soft. It was a habit that he had gotten into whenever Carrie or Jake hurt themselves, and he was glad to see that it seemed to work for teenagers as well. "It's not your fault that this happened."

The principal cleared his throat, and Gabriel looked over at him, seeing the concerned look on his face. "Although the board will be displeased, I'm almost certain that they will allow you to continue working here, especially since the students themselves don't seem to mind your relationship. I hope that you will forgive me for being forced to ask those questions." The principal apologized, dipping his head.

Gabriel smiled, a relief filling his chest unlike anything else. It was nice to know that even though there was some people that would never agree, there was also some that would accept him without a second thought. "It's quite alright. I'm just glad that I can finally the let the truth loose."

It was growing close to lunch a week later when Sam had called Gabriel's phone. Luckily, he wasn't teaching, so he answered, holding it close to his ear. The students in the class grew quiet, wanting to hear the teacher's conversation.

"Hey, Gabe. I'm sorry for calling during school but you left some of your files on the table. Do you want me to bring them to you?" Sam asked over the line. Gabriel smiled, fiddling with the ring on his left hand before answering.

"I would appreciate it if you did. Can you bring it after lunch, before 1:13? That's when the next class starts." Gabriel asked, grinning as Sam agreed. They bid their farewells, but Gabriel had another idea.

"Hey Sam?" Gabriel asked before Sam could hang up.

"Yes Gabe?"

"I love you." Gabriel said, his grin widening as he hung up before Sam could respond. He felt a weight fly off his chest, knowing he could say that without any consequences. After all, the board had cleared him yesterday.

From the look in the students' eyes, he knew he would have a little audience when Sam got there.

Gabriel was certainly correct in his assumption when he got back from his lunch and found the entire lunch class plus the class afterwards waiting with wide eyes, wanting to finally see the man that Gabriel had talked about so much. Sure, there was that picture that the blonde girl had taken, but it had been blurry and virtually pointless to look at.

When he heard a knock on his door, the students held their breath and Gabriel tried not to laugh as he walked over to the door, opening it and revealing Sam Winchester. There was a collective gasp behind Gabriel, followed by whispers, mainly of how tall the man actually was.

"Sorry for the crowd, moose. They all wanted to meet you." Gabriel said, rolling his eyes despite the amusement littering his gaze. Sam looked at the crowd, a smile crossing his face before he held out the files to the smaller man, his eyes shining.

"Not a problem, trickster." Sam said, using Gabriel's pet name with a smirk. The Novak rolled his eyes, ignoring the questioning whispers behind him as he stood on his tiptoes, pecking Sam on the lips before he began pushing him out the door.

"Yeah, yeah, now go" Gabriel said in a playful manner, allowing himself to feel free and relaxed. "You're going to go with Luci to lunch aren't you?"

Sam laughed, nodding and allowing himself to be pushed out the door. "Yeah, I do. I'll see you later. Don't torture my husband too much, okay kids?" Sam said, turning his attention to the students with a smirk. The teens let out a series of 'byes' and 'you're hot' and 'no promises' as Sam left.

Gabriel found himself enjoying this day more and more.

It was when he walked out of the school that he had saw the boy that had accidentally told his parents about Gabriel, sitting on the stairs with his head in his hands. Gabriel found, slowly making his way over cautiously. The boy had been moved to a different class because of his parents, so the Novak hadn't seen him since that meeting in the principal's office.

"Hey, you okay?" Gabriel asked, taking a seat beside the boy. The teen looked up, his brown eyes bright with tears as they fell down his face, a black bruise faded on his jaw. Gabriel furrowed his eyebrows in alarm.

"I came out to my parents last night." The boy said, disappointment and pain in his gaze as he looked down at the stairs sadly. "They didn't take it too well. I just don't want to go home right now."

Gabriel sighed, patting the boy's shoulder gently and looking over at the parking lot, where kids were being picked up or getting in their own cars. "You could get help you know. Tell the principal or someone you trust about them hitting you. They could get themselves in big trouble for that." Gabriel said, an obvious offer in his voice. He would tell if the kid wanted him to.

The boy sniffed, rubbing at his eyes and giving Gabriel a small smile. "I think it was just a spur of the moment thing. He won't hit me again, I'm sure of it." The boy said, grabbing his things and pulling his backpack onto his shoulders. "I've got to go now. If I'm not home soon, they'll get even more angry."

Gabriel stood with him, nodding in understanding. "If either one of them hits you again, tell me and I'll go to the social services about it. I won't say anything because I believe you, but....just be careful." Gabriel offered, walking down the stairs with the boy.

He watched the teen cross the parking lot and get into a car before leaving. Gabriel sighed, shaking his head and turning ideas over in his head on how he could help the boy. He got to the teacher's lot when he stepped onto the blacktop, heading for his own vehicle.

He heard the rumble of an engine and turned just in time to see a black vehicle ram right into his body.

Sam sat in the waiting room of the hospital, his leg tapping erratically on the ground as he waited for the doctor to come and tell them what happened. Lucifer sat beside him, his hand linked in Sam's tightly as he waited, a worried look on both of their faces. They had come as soon as the hospital had called, and Sam was glad that Castiel had took the kids for a the day. It was when they heard footsteps that looked up, meeting the gaze of the doctor.

"He'll wake up in the next hour or two." The doctor said, his forehead creased as if he was confused by something. Sam didn't like that one bit. "It's quite a miracle actually. His skull was cracked, yet he doesn't seem to be suffering in any brain damage. We've repaired his skull and he has a couple broken ribs, but he should make a full recovery."

Sam felt himself letting out the tension in his shoulders as he realized that Gabriel would be alright. "Do you mind if we go sit with him?" Sam asked, slowly standing. Lucifer stood as well, their hands never unlinking once. The doctor gave a reluctant nod, motioning to the hallway where he came from.

"It's room 131, the third door on the right." The doctor said before Sam nodded, thanking him before leading Lucifer towards the hallway. Together, they found the room quite easily, slowly opening it and walking in.

Gabriel was laying on the hospital bed, a bandage wrapped around the top of his head and chest. He was breathing softly, his eyes closed and his lips slightly parted. Sam could almost believe that the man had just took a nap and that he hadn't been hurt at all.

Both the Winchester and the Novak sat in the chairs beside the bed, Sam leaning over and cupping Gabriel's scraped hand in his own, watching the man sadly, allowing Lucifer to rub circles in his back as they waited.

It was precisely twenty-three minutes before Sam saw Gabriel stir, letting out a gasp of relief as the man opened his eyes, staring at the ceiling. "Gabriel. I'm so glad you're alright." Sam said, kissing Gabriel's hand.

Gabriel grunted, shifting as his eyebrows furrowed. "Where am I? What happened?" Gabriel asked, his head turning so he could face Sam. The Winchester held Gabriel's hand close, tears making their way down his cheeks.

"You're in a hospital. You got hit by a car in the school's parking lot." Sam explained, his free hand reaching over and running over Gabriel's cheek slowly, who flinched under his touch.

"Is that why I have bandages over my eyes?" Gabriel asked, a curious expression on his face. Sam frowned, freezing as he stared at Gabriel in confusion. He glanced at Lucifer, who had suddenly tensed.

"Gabe, there's no bandages around your eyes." Sam said slowly, his heart beginning to drop as he saw Gabriel frown, his hand moving up and touching around your face. A panic began growing in Gabriel's face, and Sam felt his own realization rising.

"I can't see?!" Gabriel shouted, his breaths becoming heavier as he yanked his hand from Sam's feeling all over his face. Tears were beginning to creep out of the corner of his eyes, and he blindly reached out with his hand, trying to find Sam.

Sam grabbed his hand in his, holding it close to his face and tears falling down his cheeks as he squeezed it tightly. He heard Lucifer mutter about going to find doctor before he left, leaving Sam and Gabriel alone.

"No, please, please just let this be a sick dream." Gabriel cried, clutching onto Sam's hand like a lifeline. The Winchester took a shuddering breath, holding his hand close and kissing it in comfort.

"The doctor is coming. He'll try and fix it, okay?" Sam said comfortingly, trying to keep Gabriel calm. The Novak let out a sob, his body shaking.

"Please, please don't let me blind. I can't live with never seeing your face again. Sam, please." Gabriel begged, and Sam found himself trying to keep his crying down so Gabriel couldn't hear. When the doctor came, they lost all hope as they realized it was optic nerve damage, and Sam had to hold Gabriel as he screamed in his pain.

So, I believe the moral of all my stories is to make sure that Sam and Gabriel stay away from vehicles XD
