Adoption is Great, but There's Worse Things Brewing

It had taken a total of three days to get the adoption finalized. In that time, Mike, Castiel, and Dean spent as much time as they could together. The husbands were a hundred percent sure about their choice now, especially since the lunch that they had had with the family. It was like a dream come true for them.

Moving Mike's things into the spare bedroom - now to become his bedroom - had been easy as there wasn't a lot to be moved. Just some clothes and personal belongings that barely filled one suitcase. Castiel felt a twinge of sympathy for the boy since he didn't have a lot, and vowed to take him shopping for fresh clothes and a few things he would want when they got settled in.

Castiel and Mike had just finished putting away the last of the teen's clothes when Dean walked in, wearing his uniform for work. Castiel smiled at him and straightened from his crouch, walking over and pressing his lips to Dean's in a chaste kiss.

"Have a good day at work, Dean. Don't be too reckless." Castiel said as he did every morning. It had become a ritual for him to say it ever since Dean pursued the career of a police officer. It worried the black-haired man to no end at what trouble his husband might get into with his hot-headed and stubborn nature, but it had been three years already, and things were going smoothly.

"You too, Cas. Have a good day, Mike." Dean said, smiling at his new son before exiting the room. Castiel watched until Dean trailed down the stairs out of sight, the teen clearing his throat catching his attentiont.

"You know, I never asked how long you were married." Mike commented, making Castiel turn his head and smile. He furrowed his eyebrows, counting the years on his hand.

"Almost seven years. We dated for four before that. So we've been together for about eleven years now. " Castiel finally said after his got his numbers right. Mike let out an impressed 'hm', a smile crossing his face.

"You act how my parents acted when they first got married and were in their 'honeymoon' stage. I would have guessed you've only been married a year or so." Mike replied, closing the last drawer. It was a blank looking room, with only a bed, dresser, and closet in it, but Castiel planned on making it more comfortable for the teen.

"Hm...I'll take that as a compliment." Castiel said with a grin. He stretched before looking at his black watch that Dean had given him. "I have to go get ready for work. Will you be okay staying here by yourself or do you want to come with me until we get you enrolled in your new school?"

"Can I go with you please?" Mike asked, wringing his hands together nervously. Castiel nodded, smiling as the teen visibly relaxed.

"Of course. I know it must be awkward to stay at a new home all alone." Castiel commented, backing towards the door. "I'm going to go get dressed. There's food in the kitchen if you want something before we go."

When Mike nodded in acknowledgement, Castiel headed to his bedroom to get ready.

"You're a carpenter?" Mike asked as they pulled up to the parking place of the building Castiel worked. It was a large carpentry business that specialized in original work. It was quite popular in the state and Castiel was happy that it was thriving.

"Yeah, I really enjoy it. Lucifer works here too, so we'll have some company throughout the day." Castiel  commented before switching the engine off and stepping out of his vehicle, Mike soon following. Together, they walked into the building, greeted by the sounds of wood cutting and drills echoing through the air. The smell of sawdust was prominent, but Castiel felt at home with the place. Carpentry was his passion afterall.

He led his new kid towards the back of the first floor, where Lucifer was working, safety glass strapped to his face as splinters of wood flew from the saw, his eyebrows crinkled in concentration. Castiel and Mike waited patiently until he finished, their ears ringing with the after effect of the saw.

"Hey Luci." Castiel greeted with a smile, catching the attention of the blond-haired Novak. His brother looked over and grinned, pulling off the safety goggles and hugging Castiel quickly before pulling away.

"Hey Cas, Mike." Lucifer greeted them in turn, pulling off the gloves he had been wearing and wiping at his brow. Mike returned the greeting while Castiel looked at what Lucifer was working on, letting out an impressed noise.

"It's looking good, Lucifer. When do they want it?" Castiel asked, running his hand over the carved wood. It was still rough from where it hadn't been sanded yet, but he had to admit, it was becoming quite beautiful.

"They want it by next week. I bet I can get done in three days." Lucifer said with a wink before running his hand over the wood as well.

"That's really amazing. You sure are talented." Mike commented, his eyes wide in awe. Castiel saw  Lucifer grin, ruffling the boy's hair before motioning to the black-haired Novak.

"You should see what Cas can do. When you get home, look at the beds and dressers. They're really quite something." Lucifer complimented, making Castiel flush slightly. He always got embarrassed when people talked about his work.

"It's not that great, Lucifer." Castiel replied, making Lucifer roll his eyes and let out a groan. A small smile crossed Mike's face, obvious amusement at their conversation.

"Dean sure seems to appreciate how sturdy you made the beds." Lucifer said nonchalantly, making Castiel choke on air and begin coughing, his facing turning bright red. He hit his brother on the back of his head, the blond Novak's laughter spreading across the room.

"Shut up, Lucifer." Castiel huffed, though the embarrassment on his face made it more comical than anything. He rubbed furiously at his face, glancing over at Mike whose lips were pressed together in a thin line to keep from laughing.

"I'm going to let the boss meet Mike. I'll be back in a minute." Castiel growled with a roll of his eyes, motioning for Mike to follow. Lucifer let out a chuckle as Mike let a snicker slip from his lips as the black-haired Novak turned away.

Finally, they headed farther into the building, off to the right where workstations gave away to small offices. The biggest one, the Head of the Department, was at the very end. Castiel knocked, politely waiting until he heard the acknowledgement to come in before opening the door.

Naomi sat behind a large desk, silver in color, her hair pulled up into a tight bun and her face as stone cold as usual. She offered a smile to Castiel as he walked in, Mike right behind him, but it seemed fake, almost plastic as she greeted them.

"Hello, Castiel. Who is this?" Naomi asked, her voice plain but polite. Castiel felt his spine crawl in discomfort. Her voice always unnerved him with the way it sounded like she had something much darker planned than she really let on.

"This is my new kid, Mike. We adopted him this morning." Castiel said proudfully, smiling at the teen in encouragement. "Is it alright if he comes to work with me for the next few days until we get him settled in at home?"

"I don't see the problem with it. Just keep him out of trouble and he should be fine." Naomi replied, though there seemed to be a hint of caution in her eyes. Castiel nodded, grateful that it went so smoothly and turned to lead Mike out.

"Oh, could you send Lucifer here as you're going back?" Naomi asked, smiling when Castiel nodded. It wasn't until the door closed behind him and Mike that he frowned, squinting his eyes.

"I wonder what she wants Lucifer for?" Mike commented, almost like he was reading Castiel's mind. The carpenter shrugged, and headed back over to Lucifer's work station, where he was sanding down the rough edges of the wood.

"Lucifer, the boss wanted to see you." Castiel said, motioning back towards the office. He saw Lucifer open his mouth to ask but Castiel beat him to it. "And no, I don't know why."

Silently, the blond Novak nodded and put down his tools, giving Castiel a slightly worried glance before stroding past the both of them towards the office. Mike and Castiel exchanged a glance, curiosity on both their faces.

"Come on, let me show you where I work." Castiel said eventually, making sure Mike was following before leading the teen through the different aisles of the of the workstations until he came on one two or three aisles from Lucifer. In his station was a desk that he was just finishing, only having to finish the sanding down, staining, and sealing.

"Oh, wow. That looks good." Mike said in awe, looking over the desk, running his fingers over the rough wood. Castiel flushed slightly and rubbed the back of his neck, a small smile creeping across his face.

"Thank you. I'm quite proud of it." Castiel mumbled. There was a moment of silence, but a shout from the office soon distracted everyone. Profanities drifted from the door, and Castiel felt his heart sink as he recognized Lucifer's voice. A moment later, Lucifer busted out, red in the face.

Everything became silent as the blond Novak stalked over to his workstations, shoving what he was working on to the floor and grabbing his things, throwing them around in a rage. Castiel looked at Mike, who was watching with a terrified expression, before the black-haired Novak raced over to his brother.

"Lucifer! Stop it! What's going on?" Castiel shouted, trying to get Lucifer's attention. He grabbed his brother's wrists as he tried to throw one of his cutting tools, letting Lucifer struggle until he finally gave up. That was when Castiel noticed that Lucifer was crying.

"She fired me. That bitch fired me!" Lucifer shouted, tearing his wrists away from Castiel. "I lost my job because she found out that I was in a three way relationship! I lost my job because of who I loved! Who the fuck would do that to someone?!"

Castiel was taken aback, his eyes wide. "You were fired? What are you going to do?" Castiel asked, touching Lucifer's shoulder comfortingly. Lucifer shook his head and hugged him tightly, trying to hold back sobs.

"I don't know how we're going to keep up with the bills. Gabriel doesn't make enough on his own and Sam watches the kids. I'll have to find another job quick. I'm just worried that I won't be able to." Lucifer mumbled, making Castiel shiver. He knew that Lucifer was always very worried about money and their well-being, and it broke his heart to see his older brother upset because how scared he was.

"You'll make it through, okay? I'll help you find another job." Castiel offered kindly, hugging his brother back before pulling away. Lucifer nodded, rubbing the bottom of his plam over his eyes, his mouth twisting into one of frustration.

"Just...just don't tell Sam. You know it'll upset him to know I got fired because of our relationship." Lucifer mumbled, turning away to collect his things. Once he was finished, he looked at Castiel, then glanced over at Mike who was watching warily. "Sorry your kid had to see that."

"It's fine, Lucifer. I'll explain and he'll understand. We won't tell anyone." Castiel assured, rubbing his brother's back gently. Lucifer slowly nodded, wiping at his face again before taking his things and heading for the exit. Castiel watched him go before sighing and heading back to Mike. It was going to be a long day.
