A Step Into a New Life

Sam helped Gabriel into the living room, holding his arm gently, but firmly in case the younger man stumbled. He had just gotten out of the hospital today, three days after they finally relieved the pressure that had caused his blindness. Sam would be lying if he said he wasn't exhausted from moving between Gabriel's room, the teen's room, and the police station.

"Did you check on Kyle today?" Gabriel asked as Sam helped him onto the couch, the Novak's hands roaming over Sam's arm and the seat below him, as if making sure they were still there. Sam nodded, then bit back a whimper when he realized that Gabriel couldn't see him anymore.

"Yeah, he should get out in the next day or so. Also, Dean told me that they found the parents in the state above. Apparently, they had tried to get to Canada before they got caught." Sam said, sitting down beside Gabriel and letting him rest his head on the Winchester's chest. "They're going away for a long time."

Gabriel sighed in relief, his fingers subconsciously rubbing up and down Sam's side as he stared at the wall blankly. Sam felt his heart twinge and he brushed his fingers through Gabriel's hair, leaning his head on him gently and kissing the top of his head, taking in his scent and sighing.

"What is Kyle going to do now? His parents are gone. Will he be put in foster care?" Gabriel asked, moving so he could look up in Sam's general direction. Sam leaned down, kissing his lips gently before pulling away, stroking Gabriel's cheek with his thumb.

"We'll get him out of it, don't worry about it. He can come live with us." Sam suggested, feeling Gabriel tense just slightly underneath him. The Novak reached out, his hand ghosting over Sam's lips before resting on his neck and pulling himself into Sam's lap.

"Now that I lost my job, we can't afford to have another kid." Gabriel mumbled, nuzzling into Sam's neck. Sam tipped his head so it was more comfortable, letting out a soft sigh, his hand sliding up and down Gabriel's back gently.

"You haven't lost your job. The Principal called and said that he wanted you to come back as soon as you could. They really like you." Sam replied, wrapping his arms tightly around Gabriel's waist in a squeezing hug.

"I can't teach kids when I can't see them." Gabriel complained, lifting his head and moving out Sam's grasp to the other side of the couch. Sam sighed, knowing that Gabriel was still very sensitive about his new disability and grabbed him, dragging the smaller man back over.

"The principal knows that. That's why he offered a job to me to be your sight aid." Sam said, and smiled when Gabriel froze, as if he had just told him the best news of his life and was trying to process it. It wasn't a moment later that tears spilled from his eyes, making tracks down his face.

"You mean....I can keep working?" Gabriel asked, a hope in his voice that had Sam hugging him tightly, a soft laugh playing on his lips as he felt his heart swell with happiness.

"Of course you can! How about we start tomorrow?" Sam suggested, standing and helping Gabriel up, leading him into the kitchen. Gabriel smiled brightly, wiping at his tears with his free hands, only for his smile to falter.

"I wish I could celebrate with Castiel and Lucifer too." Gabriel commented, his voice growing sullen. Sam felt bile rise in his throat, and he nodded, looking down at the ground. Things just wouldn't be the same without Castiel there.

"How about when Lucifer gets home from picking the kids up, we go and visit Dean and try to cheer him up, okay?" Sam suggested kindly, helping Gabriel to the table then grabbing the carton of eggs from the refrigerator so the both of them could eat.

"Yeah, I think he really needs it." Gabriel said softly, resting his head on his arms. Sam could understand. All of their family got along with Castiel, and losing him was like a bullet to the heart.

Sam busied himself with the cooking, scrambling the eggs and letting them cook, the sizzling filling the silence that was around them. It took only a minute for it to get done Sam spooned them into two bowls, grabbing utensils and setting it on the table.

The phone ringing made Sam jump, the shrill noise blaring compared to the quiet. He squeezed Gabriel's shoulder before heading over to the phone, pressing the talk and pulling it to his ear.

"Hello?" Sam said, leaning against the wall.

"Sam, I found a way to get Cas off the murder charges." Dean said, his voice slightly rushed and hopeful. Sam straightened up, his eyebrows furrowing together at the suddenness.

"How?" Sam asked, glancing back at where Gabriel was sitting, staring at the wall. Sam knew he was listening though.

"I was talking to the witnesses, and every single one of them said that he was shot at before he killed the man. He could file for self defense." Dean said, the shuffling of papers could be heard in the background. Sam sighed in relief, letting his head rest against the wall.

"We actually have a chance." Sam said, smiling softly.

"We actually have a chance." Dean repeated, as if the words never really meant anything to him until now. The older Winchester let out a short laugh before he gave his farewell and hung up. Sam put the phone back on the line, turning and facing Gabriel, who was tapping his hand rhythmically on the table.

"We can save Cas." Gabriel said, and Sam knew he didn't have to explain anything. Gabriel had heard it all. So, he just gave a grunt of agreement before returning to what he was doing.

Gabriel sat in his desk nervously, listening to the substitute as she explained what had happened while he was away. He nodded, smiling as she moved slow and allow him to really think about. When she was finished, she took her leave, and Gabriel felt a hand on his back, knowing it was Sam.

"I'm terrified." Gabriel mumbled, leaning against Sam's side. His husband was standing beside him, and he could feel the shift of his hips underneath his temple.

"I am too. Teenagers scare the shit out of me." Sam mumbled, and Gabriel let out a snort, raising his head off the Winchester's side as the bell rang for students to get to class. As people started filing in, his hand found Sam's and he waited as whispers filled the room.

The final bell rang and Gabriel sighed, clenching his free hand into fists. "Everyone take your seats. You can't sit where ever you want now that I'm back." Gabriel said, grabbing the attendance book and pushing it towards Sam.

"Mark it with a line if they are absent." Gabriel mumbled to Sam. His husband nodded and started calling out the names of the kids, marking the ones that didn't reply. When he finished, Gabriel stood, grabbing Sam's arm and helping him lead him to the podium.

"Sir, are you okay?" He heard a girl's voice ask, recognizing her as Amy. He nodded, smiling softly towards Sam's direction before placing his hands on the podium.

"I was just about to explain my situation." He replied before taking a deep breath, steeling himself. "As you are aware, I was out because of a car accident. Well, I'm sorry to say, but I can no longer see anything. I'm blind."

There was a silence in the room, and Gabriel took another breath, feeling extremely nervous about this. "This is Sam. As some of you may know, he's my husband. He will be my eyes and help me teach, so please, behave yourself because you won't get away from anything while he's around. Trust me."

There were mumbles of agreement from the students and Gabriel smiled, clapping his hands together and changing the subject. "Okay, where did you leave off with the sub?"
