Thunder

Be careful to who you give your trust to. For they can be your salvation...or your ruin.

Silence was broken by the unquestionable sobs. A strong house belonged to a broken family. The memories that were once pure and meaningful, vanished in the black. A wooden table is where a man sits with his hands upon his face. Hiding the tears he continues to sob, to beg, to plead, he screams "I'm sorry" and this time he means it. His last beer bottle lays empty on the floor and he curses at it. He hates the wretched thing. He curses at himself and he loathes himself. His last daughter hates him and he doesn't blame her. She sobs in her room. He regrets everything. His world has crumpled around him like a hiker getting trapped in a landslide. Waiting for someone to dig him out. His family was once four, then three, and now two. "Will it become one?" He wonders. He trembles and his hands shake against his face, the tears never seem to stop. I...can no longer watch this scene.

I speak..."Father."

The sobs stop and the hands fall. Trembling, he is unsure to look or run...he decides to look. He slowly stands up, eyes wide for he can not believe who is before him. His eyes scan my vibrant red hair as it shines in the rays that peeks through the windows. The tears roll down his cheeks and he swallows hard.

"S...Saraphine?"

"Yes father...it's me," I say in a soft whisper. He gagged, falling to his knees before me as the tears fell like cherry blossoms in fall. Wrapping his arms around my waist he buries his face into my stomach and weeps.

"I'm sorry! I'm so sorry! I'm...so sorry," he screams in desperation and pain. His hands trembling against my skin as he quivers like a child. His hands hold me protectively and longingly, his tight grip unwavering as he holds me. Biting my bottom lip I hold back the tears of my own. Bending over...I slowly wrap my arms around his neck and his sobs increase.

"I know, I know," I whispered in his ear.

"I never wanted to hurt you! I-"

"Shh, it's alright. I don't hate you, I don't hate you." I cooed.

"I love you Saraphine. My child, my beautiful daughter," he trembled. I sniffled, the tears escaping as I looked up at the ceiling, my arms still around my father's neck.

"Promise me..." I gagged through the tears. My bottom lip quivering in pain. "Promise me no more drinking."

"I promise. Never again will I touch a single bottle."

I nodded, "take care of Delilah...alright? Love her like you love mother, treat her like a princess, like a flower that shouldn't be touched. Can you do that for me? Can you take care of her?"

"Yes...yes I will!" He pleaded as he cried, his breath shaky with every word.

"Good..." I bended over, wrapping my arms around his neck tightly. "...Good."

"I love you Saraphine, please don't leave my child. Please." He begged and my eye brows knitted together. Squeezing my eyes shut I hugged him tighter, my cold tears falling upon his shoulder.

"I love you too father and I will be watching over you. Me and mother both will."

"No, don't go! Don't go!" He begged as his hands tighten on the back of my grey trench coat.

"I love you father and..." I paused, placing my lips near my father's ear. "...Mother still loves you and she misses you so very much. She's in Heaven waiting for you and she's willing to wait 1,000 years just to see you again. "Take care of our child" she told me to tell you that."

"I'm sorry...I'm sorry," he whispered. His voice quivering as his entire body trembled. Slowly, I grabbed his face in my hands and I slowly began to wipe his tears away. Pressing my forehead against his I looked into his dark grey eyes. Eyes that use to be a bright blue. What has happened to you father?

"Goodbye father," I whispered as I pressed his lips against his cheek. Letting it linger before I had faded out of his arms. Disappearing from his existence. Unable to stand anymore he fell to the floor, punching the floor as he screamed in pain.

"NO! NO BRING HER BACK! BRING SARAPHINE BACK! I MADE A MISTAKE! I MADE A MISTAKE!"

Hearing his screams, like an angel hearing his prays Delilah left her room. Seeing how he father looked so broken upon the floor her hatred for him faded away. She ran to him, burying her face into his chest as she wept. Feeling his daughter's warmth he wrapped his arms around her and there they laid...weeping for the lost of the ones they loved.

❄ Pitch's P.O.V, Still in the Past ❄

After Saraphine told me her story, she sat silently. My arms still wrapped around her waist as the back of her head leaned on the left side of my chest. The petals of cherry blossoms blowing softly, the sound of thunder far off in the distance.

"I...I don't mean to sound rude or anything but,...I kind of have to thank your father." I said softly.

My statement must have surprised Saraphine because her head shot up from my chest and she gave me a look. "Why?"

"Because without him...I probably wouldn't have met you," I spoke looking deeply in her eyes.

She snapped her head away from me. "I...I shouldn't have to die for us to meet. I......I wish we didn't meet on these terms. I want-"

Growling, I grabbed her by the arm. Making her lay down on the green grass as I hovered above her, pinning her beneath me. She looked up at me with wide eyes, her lips parted slightly in surprise. Leaning closer I grazed my nose against her's making her blush as her body tensed.

"Do you regret knowing me, Saraphine?"

"What?" Her face contorted in pain, shocked by my question.

"Do you regret meeting me?"

"No...no of course not," she shook her head as her voice had a hint of saddness.

"Then stop wishing things were different," I whispered softly. "Stop wishing that we met on better terms when we might not have met at all. Stop wishing for a different reality while I know you in the one you're in. I'm glad I met you like this because...if I haven't met my Little Birdie...I would have became the monster I was destined to become. Now..."

I paused as I looked down at her. Tears drenched her cheeks as they fell like the rain from her vibrant eyes. Eyes that were filled with so much warmth, so much life. Eyes that never seem to waver from my own. Placing my hand on her cheek I stroked away her tears gently with my thumb. Tears that were cold and had no warmth. Feeling my touch, another jolt of lightning shoot through me as Saraphine pressed her face into my hand. Her eyes fluttering shut then opening once more.

"...do you still wish things were different?"

Her eyes widen, her eyebrows coming together as her lips frowned with pain. She shook her head. No.

"Are you happy with the way things are now?"

She nodded. Yes.

"Why?"

"Cause I wouldn't be able to live without my Nightingale," she whined. Wrapping her arms around me as the distance between us cease to exist. Her hands clawed the back of my shirt as if I would disappear any second. She buried her face in my shoulder, crying as I wrapped my arms tightly around her slim body. Stroking my hand through her soft beautiful hair as I tried to calm her down.

It was at this moment I knew...I had found The One.

The council had entered the training room, a sight that was uncommon to see. Lining up, we stood there one by one with our hands behind our backs. Looking at us, their eyes had fallen upon me and Saraphine. Giving us a quick scan before they turned their eyes away, falling back on the rest of the crowd.

"Today is the day we test you." Manny spoke in a soft tone while he paced back and forth before us. The rest of the council taking a back seat as Manny continued.

"You'll each go into the fighting arena and fight the Shadows. Except the level will be adjusted to the highest setting...Deathen, but don't worry...no one will die. This test will show us how you deal with an opponent, control your power to the fullest, and if you are ready to become fully trained guardians. Do I make my self clear?"

"YES SIR!" we all spoke in unison.

"Good, Saraphine Gate..." Manny said turning his attention to Saraphine. Her eyes shooting up from the ground as nervousness danced in them.

She swallowed, "Yes sir?"

"You're up first. Enter the Arena, the rest of you take place on the side lines." Manny walked away as the rest of the trainees dispersed behind us. Looking at Saraphine I could see the stress in her eyes. Taking a deep breath she walked to the middle of the arena, but before she could I grabbed Her arm. Looking towards me she gave me a confused look, I knew she was afraid and she knew it too.

"You'll do great," I whispered, kissing her forehead as I let my lips linger. I could feel the Council's eyes upon us, eyes that weren't pleased. I let her go, allowing her to walk away as I took my place amongst the other trainees. Waiting to be tested. When I'm being tested at this very moment. The Council are shooting glares at me, daggers that are attacking me at all sides. I was never their favorite and I'll never will be. I watched as Saraphine took her place in the arena, the room becoming dark in a matter of seconds. The lights above the arena flipped on one by one, only illuminating the arena as the rest was left in pitch darkness. The timer above the arena began to count down as 4 large holes opened from each corner of the arena.

"10...9..."

Four shadow like figures rose slowly from the four holes. They had no faces but they held real weapons.

"8...7..."

Saraphine prepared herself. Her short red hair flipping side to side as she snapped her head at each figure. The count down getting louder as it got closer to one.

"6...5...4"

The shadows tightened their grip on their weapons. Taking a step forward as they were all about to attack at once. Saraphine fell to her knees, kneeling as she stayed poised watching the shadows carefully.

"3...2..."

Everything became silent as time slowed. Saraphine took in one long deep breath, her eyes fluttering close as the count down came to an end.

"...1"

The gun went off and the shadows ran.

❄ Saraphine's P.O.V ❄

The gun went off and my eyes snapped open. I was being attacked at all four sides, finding an opportunity I waited. Watching each one carefully as they came closer, 5 feet away from me.

"That's it a little more," I taunted in a whisper.

They were almost on top of me, this was my chance. I jumped, doing a back flip over one of the shadow's head. Landing on the other side as they all collided with one another. In the mix of their confusion I ran towards them, punching and kicking them as we engaged in hand to hand combat. I dodged, punched, and kicked trying not to get hurt or beaten in the process. I dodge a punch only to get hit by another making me fall back onto the floor. Trying to regain my footing one of them aimed their sword at me, stabbing me in the side. I groaned, the pain almost unbareable as the shadow only dug it deeper into me. I screamed again, cursing at the wretched thing. Instead of crying I got anger and...I felt a change.

A white blinding light shined from my wound. My jaw becoming tight as my purple eyes narrowed with rage. I grabbed the sword, slowly pulling it out of my side as I stood on my own two feet. The shadows confused and dazzled as I flung the sword to the ground.

"Who do you think you are?" I spoke in a threaten tone. The blinding light engulfing my body as my eyes were set ablazed. Feeling a new sense of confidence that I never knew.

"How dare you hurt the Angel of Life and Death!"

❄ Pitch's P.O.V ❄

Saraphine screamed at the shadows and the light grew. We shield our eyes, hiding them from it's pureness, afraid of the unknown. The light soon died in a flash, opening my eyes I could not believe what I saw.

Black and white, Beautiful and powerful. Her wings were the definition of these four words as they sprouted from her back. Her once short hair was now long as it glimmered like a ruby, her eyes vibrant as she radiated with power. Flapping her wings, she stretched them proud and tall letting them flash their power. My Little Birdie...wasn't little anymore.

Holding her hand out, a black scythe formed from light. The sound of thunder as she attacked, moving as if she was controlled by a demon. Fighting like a warrior she defeated the shadows with one blow. Her long red hair cascading down her body perfectly as the scythe faded to nothing. The Guardians stared at her in awe as I did the same. The amount of power she contained was unbelievable and imaginable. Hiding her newly earned wings the council entered the arena.

"Bravo Saraphine, job well done." They spoke, clapping their hands in congratulations.

"I told you she was the one," Solaria bragged to Mother Nature.

"Oh hush," she replied.

"Excellent job Saraphine, you are everything we expected and more." Manny congratulated, placing his hand on her shoulder.

"Thank you sir."

"No need for "thank you"s. You, Saraphine Gate, are officially the Angel of Life and Death. Mother Nature will take you to get situated. Mother Nature..."

She nodded, walking over to Saraphine as she draped her arm around her shoulders. "This way my dear," Mother nature spoke as she urged Saraphine towards a door on the other side of the training room.

"Alright who's next?" Manny spoke trying to grab everyone's attention. But I could care less on what Manny was saying as I watched Saraphine walked. Her back tense as she walked with caution and fear. Arriving to the door...she hesitated to walk through it causing Mother Nature to show a look of confusion. I took a step forward as she stood there frozen. Is she...nervous? Slowly, she turned to look at me her vibrant eyes holding a question she hope I had the answer to. To stay...or to go. Answering her question...I nodded mouthing the words "I will see you soon". She smiled and walked through the door.

That was the last time saw her for two weeks.

"Where is she!?" I demanded, barging into the council room as all the council members looked up from their papers.

"What?" Solaria questioned.

"Where is she!" I demanded once more.

"Where's who?" Father Time questioned, trying to play dumb.

"Don't play dumb with me! Saraphine Gate, where is she!"

Manny sighed, flinging the sheets he held in his hand against the desk. "Pitch-"

"No Manny," Mother Nature interrupted. All eyes peering upon her as she stood.

"If he wants to see Saraphine..." she spoke as she walked, gradually making her way to stand next to me. "...we'll take him to her."

Manny's eyes narrowed as his lips became a thin line. "Aren't you be unreasonable, Mother Nature?"

"Didn't I tell you we have to be unreasonable. Especially with this child, I told you that before you chosed him." She snapped back.

He was conflicted, taken back by her statement. Knowing it was true. He looked at me with sorrowful eyes before he casted them down. His hands curled into a tight fist as they laid upon the table.

"It's time he knew the truth Manny. I'm sorry." She turned around looking at me as she said, "if you want to see her, come with me." She then continued to walk out of the room. Shoving my hands in my pockets I slowly followed behind her. Hearing Manny muttered the word "shit" as I stepped into the hall way. We walk silently down the hall as she walked one foot ahead and I one foot behind. I began to wonder what they meant back there. What do Manny mean by being unreasonable and Mother Nature saying they have to be? What did she mean by...the truth.

"We're almost there Pitch. She's just down this hall."

"Back there..."

"Hm?" She hummed, beckoning to continue my question.

"Back there what did Manny mean by being unreasonable?"

She sighed, "the truth is...we have to be unreasonable with all our Guardians. Pushing them to thrive and to complete their destiny."

"But you said you have to be specifically unreasonable with me. Why?"

She stopped, turning her head to me as her eyes narrowed wickedly. "Because...you're the one we have to break."

I froze, "w...what?"

She stood in front of me, her eyes of the rainbow turning a color of the darkest grey. "Tell me Pitch, who are you?"

"I'm the King of Nightmares."

"Exactly and that's why we have to break you. You are one of the most powerful Guardians we know and you are the most dangerous. We created you...to be a monster."

My eyes widened, a cold chill invading my body as I could not believe I was hearing. She stepped forward, grabbing my face in her hands. Her hands cold to the touch, a feeling I don't want to experience again.

"You...are our weapon. A machine to fight our wars, a monster to kill our enemies. You are nothing but pure darkness in a form of a body, everything about you is wrong."

"No...no you're wrong," I shook my head, pulling my face out of her hold.

"You are a outcast, a monster. You were not destined to be happy, to have friends, to have feelings, and you are forbidden to love. You were chosen to be our emotionless Hell Hound, there is no good in you and there never will be. You are nothing but chaos and ruin!"

"No! No you're wrong!"

"I am not wrong." She spoke in a cold tone.

"You are! I can be good, I can be. Saraphine knows, she knows that I can be good!"

"Oh, Saraphine...such a nice girl. Too bad she knew you."

My eyes narrowed as she smirked. Turning around she continued to walk with me still a foot behind her.

"Did you know that Saraphine was going to be our newest council member?"

My eyes widened, "what?"

"Yes, she was going to be our newest council member. Well she still is, but we had to delay her designation."

"Why?"

"Because we had to teach her a lesson, foolish girl...falling in love with things she's not suppose to."

"What...what do you mean? What did you do to Saraphine!"

We soon came to a steal door. It was so cold and heavy it looked like a entrance to hatch instead of a room. A big steal wheel that you had to turn just to unlock the big metal barrier. Mother Nature grabbed the wheel, turning it to the left I heard a click and the door opened. Swinging into the room it was hiding as a light emitted from the room as it invaded the dimmed hall way. Even though there was light illuminating from the room I could sense a large darkness residing in it. Something was wrong in that room, something dark that gave you a sense of pain and fear. I...was hesitant to enter that room, timid even.

"If you want to know what we did to her..." she paused, extended her arm into the room as if she was inviting me in. "...see it for yourself."

Slowly, hesitantly, I walked towards the door. The feeling of darkness rising with every step I take. There was nothing but silence and the sound of my feet every time a took a step. I slowly crossed through the door and that's when I heard the screams. That's...when I saw her.

Like Thunder, the pain bore down on me with it's loud sound. The mighty force banging in my ears making sure I hear it. It came like a monster, engulfing me with it's mighty roar as I was lost in pain. I fell to my knees as it roar once more, crashing against me with it's trembling sound. The tears began to flow as they stained my cheeks, my rain to the thunder. The pain was like thunder, loud and uncontrollable. It was a mass force as they became one and the same.

I felt the pain, but all I could hear was...Thunder.
