Chapter 2: Answers
Hey! It's me again! Before the story begins, there's is something very important I must tell you.
This is my own Undertale story, so there will be a lot of changes. The main story will be similar to the actual story canon, but there will be many other changes like the actual time the monsters were sealed in the Underground. This is to make my story more interesting and also to save me a lot of time trying to figure out good ideas. Please trust me, I will try my best to make it an awesome quality book.

"OKAY. I'LL TELL YOU ALL THAT I CAN." Papyrus spoke, his powerful voice absorbed into everyone's ears. The family had all gathered onto the buffet table, each sitting in their respective place. The day had barely began, and there had been more action than a Tokyo Ghoul battle scene. Instead of tea, Asgore chose to hand out coffee to everyone, giving Frisk a cup of hot chocolate with miniature star marshmallows. For Papyrus, Asgore had given him a mug of full cream milk, his favourite kind. Sans was stable, taking heavy breaths in his sleep over and over despite not needing to breath in the first place. Papyrus had explained that it was a coping mechanism of his, and many times after he suffered a panic attack, he would often be seen sitting down on the couch, taking heavy breaths over and over, muttering in gibberish to himself.
"EVERY TIME I WOULD GO TO CHECK ON HIM AFTER THOSE ATTACKS, HE WOULD SMILE AT ME, CLAIMING THAT HE COULDN'T REMEMBER WHY HE HAD WOKEN UP IN THE FIRST PLACE. IT WORRIES ME." Papyrus had said. Toriel was shock. This kind of behaviour resembled Chara in a way, but while Sans would deny it, Chara would shout at them, staying far away from them. Eventually, Chara had recovered, and was doing so well until...
Toriel shook her head. Now was not the time to reflect on the past. It would do her no good. At any rate, there was something else troubling her greatly. When she had carried Sans downstairs in her large furry arms and placed him on the large plush couch, she decided to check his stats. The result shocked her.
"OKAY PUNK!" Undyne suddenly yelled, shaking Toriel from her thoughts. "Tell us about Sans! What the heck happened up there?! Why was he floating in the air?! How was he using so much magic?! ANSWERS!" Undyne had been watching Sans the entire time, and the amount of magic he had been expelling in that time had shocked her. It didn't make sense! Sans was a lazy monster who probably couldn't use magic to save his life. The only reason he had been a sentry was so that he could support his brother and help him join the Royal Guard. However, he had talked to her in private, and the two agreed that Papyrus couldn't join the Guard, considering he was more likely to start a friendly conversation about spaghetti to the enemy. While she would never admit it, Undyne had some respect to a monster who would willingly man four guard stations at the same time. She never got an answer from him as to how he managed it, Alphys had explained that he had the ability to teleport and could appear anywhere instantaneously. It still didn't explain the heavy magic pressure she had felt when she had entered the room. It felt like she was on the bottom of the ocean again, the gargantuan pressure surrounding her threatening to break her entire body into splinters.
"Undyne." The calm voice of Asgore intervened. "Let Papyrus explain in time. We are all curious as to what happened with Sans." Hearing this, Undyne calmed down, respecting the decision of the Mountain King.
"THANK YOU MR ASGORE." Papyrus exclaimed, grateful for what he had done. "I KNOW YOU ALL HAVE QUESTIONS, AND I'LL WILL TRY TO EXPLAIN THEM AS BEST AS I CAN."
"SANS HAS HAD BEEN SUFFERING FROM PANIC ATTACKS FOR AS LONG AS I CAN REMEMBER. USUALLY, HE WOULD JUST HYPERVENTILATE IN HIS SLEEP. BUT THERE WERE TIMES WHEN HE WOULD BREAK HIS DOOR DOWN, FIGHTING SOME UNKNOWN ENEMY OR RUNNING AWAY FROM AN IMAGINARY BEING. HE WOULD ALWAYS COVER IT UP WHEN HE COULD, MAKING TERRIBLE PUNS TO TRY AND HIDE THE FACT THAT HE HAD JUST WOKEN UP IN FEAR AND PAIN."
"THE WORST TIME WAS WHEN I WAS WATCHING METTATON'S SHOW DOWNSTAIRS ONCE. IT WAS A MUSICAL NUMBER, AND I WAS LISTENING TO IT. SUDDENLY, I COULD HEAR CRASHING AND BANGING FROM SANS'S ROOM. I QUICKLY CLIMED UP THE SAIRS, TRYING TO GET THERE AS FAST AS POSSIBLE. BEFORE I REACHED THE DOOR, A WHITE LASER FLEW PAST HIS DOOR, REDUCING IT TO ASHES AND MAKING A HOLE IN THE ROOF OF THE HOUSE. I WENT INSIDE, READY TO DODGE WITH GRACE IF IT HAPPENED AGAIN. SANS WAS THERE, HIS EYE SOCKETS EMPTY OF LIGHT AS HE TURNED HIS HEAD TO ME, READY TO FIRE AT ME WITH A GIANT SKELETON DRAGON SKULL NEXT TO HIM. HIS SMILE WAS TERRIFYING, STARING AT ME LIKE HE WANTED TO TURN ME TO DUST." At that, Papyrus started to shiver, taking more sips of his milk.
Frisk was shocked. Giant skeleton dragon skull? That sounded just like a Gaster Blaster. Frisk recalled the damage potential the skulls possessed from the times when he had chosen the Genocide Path. With that thought, Frisk felt a powerful chill crawling up and down his back. They knew that feeling all too well.
"I CALLED OUT HIS NAME, TRYING TO TELL HIM THAT IT WAS HIS BROTHER. HE COULDN'T HEAR ME, AND SEEMED TO BE TALKING TO SOME UNSEEN PERSON, MOST LIKELY THE PERSON THAT HE WAS FIGHTING. BEFORE HE COULD ATTACK, I RAN TO HIM AND COVERED HIM WITH MY ARMS, REPEATEDLY TELLING HIM THAT IT WAS ALRIGHT, HE WAESN'T FIGHTING ANYONE. HE STOPPED IN MY ARMS, THE SKULL VANISHING AWAY AS HE COLLAPSED IN MY ARMS. I WAS VERY LUCKY THAT NIGHT. IF I WAESN'T SO GREAT, I MIGHT HAVE BEEN HURT. IN FACT, WE WERE ALL LUCKY THAT SANS DIDN'T ATTACK US. HIS MAGIC POWER WAS SO HIGH JUST NOW, WE ALL WOULD HAVE BEEN HURT."
"That doesn't answer my main question!" Undyne interrupted. "How was his magic so high just then?!"
"TO BE HONEST," Papyrus sighed. "I DON'T KNOW. EVERYTIME I TRY TO FIND OUT, HE IGNORES MY QUESTIONS OR TELLS A BAD PUN AND RUNS TO GRILLBY'S. IT'S LIKE HE'S AVOIDING ME ON PURPOSE!"
While the two were in discussion, Toriel decided that now was the best time to intervene. Standing up, she took in a breath to speak.
"There is something I must tell you all. It is about Sans. When I took him downstairs, I decided to CHECK his stats to make sure that nothing bad had happen to his SOUL." Without saying anything, she showed them his stats.
COMIC SANS MS
EXP:?
LV:?
ATK:1
DEF:1
A funny little monster who can always make me laugh. My dearest friend in the world.
Toriel was glad the description was unseen to anyone but her. For each person, the description changed based on their feelings and relationship towards the actual person being CHECKed. Everyone was shocked by this, with the exception of Papyrus, Frisk and Alphys.
"Wait. ONE ATTACK AND DEFENSE?! WHAT THE F-" Undyne began, but caught herself quickly after seeing Toriel's glare. Asgore looked quite suprised, seemingly thinking to himself.
Asgore's worried expression took over his face. "This is quite serious," he muttered to himself so no one would hear him. "How could this be possible? I know Sans's power."
"D-did you say something y-your Majesty?" Alphys asked, noticing the King was in deep thought.
"Oh! My apologies Alphys. I was merely considering something. It is nothing important." Asgore reassured, while making a mental note to himself.
"AH. I WAS WONDERING WHEN YOU WOULD FIND OUT. I SHOULD HAVE KNOW SANS WOULDN'T HAVE TOLD YOU." Papyrus sighed, his expression changing to one of sadness. Toriel was taken aback by the alien gesture. Papyrus looking sad was as rare as a blue moon.
"SANS WOULDN'T WANT ME TO TELL YOU THIS, BUT IF YOU ASKED HIM, HE WOULD NEVER GIVE YOU A STRAIGHT ANSWER. AT LEAST, HE NEVER GAVE ME ONE." Papyrus's face fell even more.
"YOU SEE, SANS HAS ALWAYS HAD WEAK STATS. WHENEVER I TRIED TO FIGURE OUT WHY, HE WOULD TURN TO ME AND SAY 'I GUESS I'M SO LAZY THAT EVEN MY STATS CAN'T BE BOTHERED TO RAISE THEMSELVES'."
Toriel started to smile at this, but was able to stop herself in time. She knew that it was not the right time.
"But that makes zero sense! With the amount of magic he was pouring out, he should have ridiculous stats!" Undyne insisted, refusing to accept the evidence in front of her.
"U-um Undyne?" Alphys spoke "I may not be able to explain why his stats are so strange, b-but there is something e-else. It isn't much, but it m-may give some answers into Sans's mysterious SOUL and stats."
"Heh. Of course you would know Al! You're the smartest monster here!" Saying that, Undyne picked her up and raised her high above, Alphys blushing like a red tomato.
"Hey Fishgirl!" Flowey suddenly interrupted, surprising everyone there "I want answers! Trashbag there has stupidly low stats and yet still can use a lot of magic! I am demanding an explanation!"
Undyne glared at the flower, wishing she could go full anime mode and suplex it back into the Underground with an explosion like All Might. Now he was an awesome anime dude. The guy could make a suplex do a crazy explosion! Unfortunately, Frisk was attached to the thing, so her wishes had to stay blissful fantasies.
"Fine." She said, placing her girlfriend into her lap, the latter still blushing like a rose.
"U-um, w-where do I-I even b-begin?" she stuttered constantly. Hearing her constant stutter, Undyne gave her a reassuring hug to comfort her. Feeling this, Alphys smiled and, taking a deep breath to steady herself, began.
TO BE CONTINUED...
RIGHT NOW (I refuse to end on a cliff-hanger like that right now. Maybe later.)
"You see, it have long been believed that monsters have weak SOULs, weaker than human SOULs. However, t-this isn't the case by a long shot. With more and more research, I and a team of monsters have discovered incredible things about monster SOULs."
"Monsters have extremely powerful magical SOULs, even stronger than the human kind!" At this, everyone looked shocked, unable to believe this. Asgore frowned at this, and went to say something. Alphys noticed this, and quickly went on.
"The main reason the humans were able to defeat us in the first place was because of their magic type. D-despite us having superior magic abilities, human SOULs have resistance to it. That's why Frisk was never killed by a single spear from Undyne and other powerful monsters."
"But that's not all. When monsters were forced into the Underground, the Seven Wizards forged the Barrier with a sealing effect, designed to reduce our power usage. Even the Boss Monsters had their magic suppressed. I haven't calculated the full suppression rate, but currently it was about 45 to 50%. That also explains how Frisk was able to survive many attacks and live."
"Wait, really?" Frisk asked, their eyes full of surprise. "Then how come they never noticed?"
"Frisk brings up an excellent question, Alphys dear," Toriel added, wondering how she never realised her own tremendous power being limited.
"T-that's an excellent question Frisk." Alphys responded. "You see, because monsters were sealed in the Underground for 600 years, their bodies adjusted to the suppressed magic level. This trait was inherited by many monster offspring. I think the Wizards were somehow able to cause the Barrier's magic to trick our minds into believing that our magic levels were fine. Of course, this would mean that to create such an effect, the Wizards would have to give up their lives."
The monsters, having reached their suprise level, were merely intrigued. Asgore pondered this, wondering if they would ever recover their old power if Alphys's claim was true.
"MISS ALPHYS," Papyrus asked, confusion clear in his voice. "WILL MONSTER EVER RECOVER THEIR FULL POWER? AND WHAT ABOUT MONSTERS THAT WERE BORN AFTER THE BARRIER WAS SEALED? WERE THEY BORN WITH FULL POWER BUT THEN HAD IT SUPPRESSED?"
"W-well, by my estimates, there is evidence to believe that all the monsters, regardless of age, should recover their true power, or close to it. Most likely they would need to train to fully use their power. The Barrier broke a year ago, so there is still a lot of time before monster SOUL's regain it, but I am conducting tests to see if I can predict when the magic recovery process should begin."
"Hang on. Is that what you were doing all those late days and night? Why didn't you tell me?" Undyne asked, a realisation flashing in her mind.
"Heh. G-guess I've been caught." Alphys confirmed, a smile growing on her face. "It didn't seem like the right time. I'm s-sorry."
Undyne reassured her that it was okay, but if she did it again, she would grab her and hold her in her awesome arms until she revealed her secrets.
"While that's all very interesting," Flowey interrupted again, sarcasm evident in his face and voice "How does that relate back to Trashbag?"
"Oh!" Alphys said with a start, realising that she had gotten sidetracked "Thank you Flowey. I had almost forgotten about that."
"When I found out about this, I immediately realised that I had to make sure that monsters would be able to handle this. So, I made a list which consisted of the very young, the very old and the very weak." At this, she glaced at Sans, which made everyone looked at her.
"You knew?! How?!" Undyne asked, her surprise meter never catching a break.
"Let's not dwell on that right now." Alphys responded, avoiding the question with a slightly nervous look. "The main thing is, I needed to CHECK up on all of the monsters mentioned. When I went to Sans, he tried to put it off, saying that he didn't think he would be experiencing any discomfort during his many day naps. After much insisting, he finally agreed to let me CHECK his soul with a special magic meter. It can detect SOUL magic and portray it in numbers, like a scouter from Dragon Ball Z." Frisk and Undyne both nodded simuntaneously, understanding it fully.
"The number changed depending on the user's magic level and ranged from 1 to 1000. When I used it on Sans, something popped up. A number I programmed that I never would have expected."
"The machine showed Sans's magic level was infinite."

And there you go! Now you know why I didn't leave it on a cliff-hanger earlier *laughs deviously*
