Chapter 28: The Chaos
We live in a rainbow of chaos.
-Paul Cezanne
Coco Spencer's POV
I heard my mobile phone sounded on the coffee table. I looked at the name on the screen and ignore it. This was the sixth incoming call from Leila Salazar. I don't want to talk to her I was sure her phone call was all about the divorce which I don't want to talk about.
The phone went silent again after moments of ringing but not so long it sounded again. Releasing an angry sighed I took the phone and answered it. "Leila."
"About time you answer your phone, Coco." I heard her say on the other line. She sounded distressed but I might be thinking too much.
"If you called me about my divorce with Rafe then I'm very sorry but I don't want to talk about my divorce," I informed her coldly. I didn't want her to start with her talk and tried to change my mind about it. "I'm sure by today our divorce was already a common knowledge in Ragusa."
"I'm afraid that's correct." Leila reflected on the other line. "You cannot keep any secret in this little old town of Ragusa. The air has ears everywhere. But I didn't call you to talk about the divorce. I fear that my news is far more distressing. I knew if he had his way he doesn't want you to know this but believe you have the right to know."
"What?" I asked in confusion, frowning I sat on the sofa. "You are not making any sense, Leila. He? Who are you talking about?"
"Rafe," Leila answered shortly, and then my heart constricted in my chest upon hearing his name. "I regret to inform you that Rafe had been kidnapped in front of his office a few hours ago. Someone saw him being forced inside the SUV with the kidnappers."
My heart missed a beat. I could swear the world had stop from spinning. My mouth went dry at her news. "That's not a good joke, Leila. Tell me you are just kidding. You are not funny."
"I'm afraid I'm telling you the truth." She replied regretfully.
Just like that my world collapse right before my eyes. This could not be happening, I told myself silently. My heart couldn't bear the thought of him in danger I would die if something bad happened to him. "H-have you called the police? What did they say?"
I heard Leila sighed deeply. "They say that they can't declare him missing unless he's been gone missing for twenty-four hours."
"What kind of rule is that!?" I burst angrily, by now my eyes were blurred by tears. "We need to find him with or without the authority."
"My father's men are already searching for him." She informed me gently. But that's not enough for me. I want to be there to personally talk to the Sicilian cops and take this matter seriously. "I have one man in mind that had a knack in finding a missing person. It's a good thing that he's already in Sicily with the gang but I can't contact him."
I frowned at her words. "Who are you talking about?"
"Marco Orsini." She said with such pride. "He has a good reputation in finding missing persons. He's in town for a boys' night out with Lucca, Nikos, and Leandro."
"Good," I said without even thinking. "I will fly to Sicily right now." I disconnected the phone call and run to my bedroom and pack my clothes. Tears steaming in my cheeks but I brushed them away. Oh God, please don't let anything happened to Rafe. I couldn't bear it if... I couldn't forgive myself for not telling him how much I love him.
I love him with all my heart and I was so stupid to let my jealously get the best of me. Now I was not even sure if I could tell him personally how much I love him. But I'm begging the Almighty to give me a chance to amend my mistake with the man I love.
Closing my luggage, I was on my way to Sicily. I just hope I was not too late.
Rafe Moretti's POV
I knew for certain that I was not for away from my death today. Here I was tied up in a car bound to an unknown destination only the Almighty knew my coming fate. As far as I was concerned I don't owe the Mafia any money or crossed someone who was working for them.
So what I got myself into? I asked silently.
If I would die today at the hands of these thugs, I didn't have regrets in my life. I would die knowing that I confessed my true feelings for Coco even if she didn't believe me. Suddenly, I felt an excruciating pain in my chest, as I remembered my last moments with my lovely ex-wife.
But I didn't stop myself from thinking about her. I gladly welcome the pain that resided in my heart. At least, now even a few hours remaining in my life she was my last thought. Even if, they would kill me after this car ride, I just hope that Coco would not feel guilty about this misfortune I encounter today and blame herself for this.
If I could have my way I would not let her know that I was kidnaped by the goons of the mafia community—or a man had hidden anger to me and wants me dead. I would spare her the heartache and remorse.
I noticed that the car suddenly halts. Were we finally arrived at the place where they would torture me and kill me afterward? All of a sudden, my heart beating wildly in my chest, I could swear my captors would hear it in a moment.
I heard the car's door opened and one of them guided me to slide out of the car. I was nervous as hell while walking. Would they really kill me after they got the information they needed? I kept asking myself. Was this really how my life would end? Twenty-nine, freshly divorce would die in some abandoned place. Why my life does suck so much?
The one who was leading me to follow him now forced me to sit on the chair. Here would start the torture. I could hear the footsteps stop. I was mentally preparing myself for the torment and the pain they would inflict on me when the sack covering my head lifted away.
My eyes slowly adjust to the bright light inside the room I noticed four men standing around. I squinted and focus my gaze on them when my eyes finally adjusted at the lightning inside the room and my abductor's face became recognizable my eyes widened in disbelief. I was surprised to see them that they weren't wearing their mask now. "Y-you...!"
"Hello, Rafe." Italian billionaire, Marco Orsini, greeted me with a friendly smile on his face. He took a vacant chair and turned it around as he positioned it in front of me. He straddled the chair while his arms resting on the backrest. "We're deeply sorry if we scare you for a moment. Believe me, it was unintentional."
"You're the guys who kidnapped me?" I asked though I was not asking more of telling them. "Are you all mad? What the hell is wrong with you? You nearly give me a heart attack with your stunt."
I was not sure if I would sigh with relief first or unleashed my anger towards them. I eyed their different reaction while I directed my rage to them. The respected Italian duke gave me an apologetic look but there was still a private smile playing on his lips. Leila's husband just merely shrugged while Nikos Pallis's examined meticulously his clean nails avoiding my gaze.
"Now, see here..." Marco Orsini spoke again. I focused my anger direct on him. "...you don't need to be angry with this small matter, Rafe. We did this to help you save your marriage. Save your thanks later when we're done."
"As if, I will thank you for this!" I informed him acidly, I tried to move my hands but I forgot that they tied me like a criminal. "And since when did my marriage become everybody's business? I haven't butt-in with the lot of you in your marriage life so I don't get it why are you doing this for me? I don't need your help. Release me from this handcuff I will go home."
I was about to stand from the chair when Marco stopped me with his hand. "No, not yet. You can't go home until we resolve this." He turned around to face Leandro Salazar. "Will you give the keys to his handcuff, amico?"
With a smile, Leandro fished out the keys in his pocket and placed them in the waiting hands of this man in front of me. Once he got the keys he dangled it in front of me like a man tempting his cat with salmon. "We can do this the easy way or hard way, Rafe. That's all completely up to you. You cooperate with us and I promise to remove your handcuff later but if you refuse I will throw this key on the sink. I bet you will not appreciate that since you have to settle to an electric saw if you want them to be removed. Believed me it will be quite bloody if you move even if a little bit in your position."
There was no point in arguing with him when he has the upper hand. I sighed deeply and convinced myself to listen to him. "Say what you want so I can go home as soon as possible."
"Stubborn to the bone, I like it. You just prove once again that you fitted in the club very well." Marco announced with a grin on his face. If I didn't know better I would assume that he was very proud of me.
"I don't want to join your club."
Marco eyed me dryly. "I don't want to sound rude but—"
"But that comes naturally of you, right?" Nikos inserted smoothly.
Marco turned around and threw a disapproving look at his friend. "Shut up, Nick. This is my moment. I don't want you to ruin it by making snide remarks. Need I remind you I was the one who planned all of this? I'm going to save our club even if my life will be in danger after this."
The Greek man sighed deeply, shaking his dark head. He stared at the duke who was silent on the sideline. "Don't you think he's taking this 'we have saved our club' more dramatically than it should be? I mean look at him..." He gestured me with his hand. "...at first, he only wants to save this man's marriage now he's betting his life just to save the club."
Lucca Cavelli merely shrugged, crossing his arms in the middle of his chest. "You know how Marco loves to be dramatic always, Nick. Haven't you got used to his attitude yet?"
"Hey, you two heartless weasels, have I not told you before? If you are going to gossip about a certain person be sure he is not in the hearing distance. You guys know how to wound my poor innocent heart."
Amusement lit the duke's grey eyes. "See what I'm talking about, Nick?"
"I don't want to interrupt your argument but aren't you forgetting something?" I asked in annoyance. "My hands still handcuffed at my back and I swear to God I'm starting to feel numb. Can you release me first before you continue to argue with one another?"
Marco turned to face me with a friendly smile. "Are you forgetting? You are my hostage I cannot release you unless I get what I want from you. Besides, I can argue with my subordinates whenever I want. I got the upper hand here."
"Believe me," Leandro Salazar put in with a knowing smile on his face. "That's their specialty getting sidetrack every now and then."
"I don't think I like the word subordinate." Laila's husband muttered softly.
"What do you want from me?" I asked in annoyance. We're just going around circle here. I was starting to lose my patience. "For God's sake, just say it so we can all go home."
Marco's lips curved with a grin. "If I am Coco Spencer I will say what I want from you is your body but since I am not her. I'm just going to say I need your cooperation. I want you to win back your lovely little ex-wife."
I glared at them acidly. "I told you a while ago. Do not butt in on how I handle my relationship with my ex-wife. This thing is between me and her only."
He rolled his eyes. "Let me give you some advice, amico. When it comes to the woman you love pride doesn't matter. If you have to grovel in front of her do it but first, surrender your poor pathetic heart in a silver platter."
I looked away from his intense gaze. "Ours was different from your relationship guys."
"How's so?" Marco asked loutishly. "I think we were all the same in the first part of the marriage life. We were also once-proud men who thought fighting for a woman is not worth it but that was all before. Now we were all fallen men."
I was about to answer when a mobile phone sounded. We all turned around to look at Leandro. "Sorry, it's Leila and she has already fifteen missed calls before this one." He slid his finger to the screen and took the phone call. "Hello, querida." He winced after his greeting. Leila was probably giving him an earful lecture from the other line. "Yes, I'm with Marco. What? You want to talk to him?"
With a frown on his face, the Spanish count gave his mobile device to the man sitting in front of me. "Ciao, little one. Your husband said you want to speak to me what is it? Oh...?" He turned to look at me with a devilish smile. "...you said Rafe had been kidnapped in front of his office and you want me to help to locate him?"
I stared at him in disbelief. This man was one hell of an actor. How could he play innocent while he was the one who abducted me?
"Of course, I will help you find the missing Rafe Moretti." I heard him replied on the other line. His dark eyes lit with pleasure. "Really? That's a good thing then. All right, I will start to search for Rafe now, bye little one. I will update you if I have any news about his disappearance." He returned the mobile to Leandro and grinned at me evilly after a moment. "I have some good news for you, Rafe. First, your family and the Fiorenzas already knew you are missing. Second, your little missus is already traveling to Sicily as we speak."
