Chapter 5
---Paige's POV----
Jack was leading me ahead, trying to get us through the mob that wanted to eat. I was kind of shocked by all the noise that they were making. Eventually we crawled out of the mass and Jack pointed to a table, where Nick, Tyler and a few of the other guys were sitting.
"Go ahead and sit with them, I'm going to get us some food." He said while he pushed me ahead. He turned around and disappeared while I made my way to the table.
"Paige! You've survived that hungry mob!" Nick said, wiping away a fake tear.
I looked at him and turned at Tyler and whisper-yelled from behind my hand, "Do you know what's wrong with him?" Tyler grinned and playfully shook his head, "I have no idea." He said, clearly playing along. Nick playfully scowled at us and punched Tyler in the arm.
"Hey! What was that for?" Tyler asked, rubbing his arm. Nick just shrugged and pulled a chair back for me. I took a seat while I dropped my bag down on the floor. Looking back up, I saw more than six guys staring at me with curiosity in their eyes.
I blinked when Jack came back with a plate of food piled on it. The guys diverted their attention and almost lunged at the food. After a few seconds, the plate was empty; not even a crumb was left behind. I looked around to see everyone eating and huffed, crossing my arms with annoyance causing some of the guys to look up.
"Paige? What's wrong?" Nick asked me. I rolled my eyes at him, did he seriously had to ask that? I pointedly looked at the food he had in his hands and showed him my own: empty. They seemed to slowly realize that they actually took all the food before I could even look at it, as a few guys around me looked slightly embarrassed, shuffling on their seats while guiltily looking towards their plates piled up with food.
"Heads up!" someone said, and I saw an apple flying my way. I quickly grabbed it out of the air and looked at the pitcher. Tyler was smiling with a self-satisfied grin on his face. I looked back at the apple and finally grinned at him.
"Thanks Ty, I owe you one." I said happily while biting down on the apple. He gave me a suggestive smile and I rolled my eyes. "Not that much." I muttered, causing him to lightly chuckle before he sat down and started to eat.
It took relatively no time at all for the boys to finish their food while I was still eating. Seemingly, werewolves had a never-ending appetite. Some of them were even eying my apple, while they had eaten several slices of pizza and other delicious fast food. Nick looked at them with an amused smile.
"Come on, let the girl eat something." He said while he muttered "pigs!" quite loudly. I gave him a fake scowl and he smirked at me. "You know, you have wolfed down enough food of your own." I said in a teasing way, causing some of the guys to laugh. Probably because my choice of words.
"Ah, come on! I was hungry." He exclaimed.
I just shrugged while I bit another piece of my apple. "I saw how you ate your food. You're a savage." I smiled at the fake-hurt face he was pulling, puppy eyes included.
"Ouch, girl you're cruel. That's not the Paige I know." He said while he put his hand over his heart. I raised an eyebrow at him. "Like you know me that long." I smirked.
Jack nodded from across me. "Good point." He smirked. I noticed that all the guys from the table were, yet again, staring at me. What was I for these wolves? All-you-can-eat-buffet?
Ignoring the stares of everyone around me, I pulled out my roster to see what class I had next. I almost smirked when I noticed I had P.E. Those boys probably thought they could win easily from me, since I am a girl. But thanks to being a shifter, I had inhuman reflexed, more specifically, animal reflexes. The more forms I learned, the stronger I got.
I sighed while I put my stuff away. Showing off against these boys would have the effect that I gave up on my secret. I might as well just change forms in front of their noses. I smiled lightly; God, I wish I could see the looks on their faces. That would be hilarious, priceless even if I could get a picture of it.
"Thinking of me Princess?" Tyler said with a smile. I snorted, "In your dreams Tyler." I said while rolling my eyes. His smile just became a grin, causing me to shudder. Ew, pervert alert! Luckily, Nick punched Tyler in the shoulder while Jack was glaring at Tyler too.
"Anyway, I'm off to class right now, before I hear any perverted thoughts vented out loud." I said while glancing at Tyler, who shrugged innocently. A few others stood up with me and I looked around, slightly confused. Or my eyes were cheating me, or I was seeing three identical, and completely off the record, gorgeous guys looking at me. I shook my head while they gave me an identical grin.
A quick once over gave be a better view of the guys; they were well build , blessed by their good werewolf genes of course, slightly tanned like they had stayed on a holiday under the sun. All three of them had brown, messy hair that gave them a nonchalant out-of-bed look but I noticed that their eyes where slightly different. They all had blue eyes, but they varied from silver blue to a dark blue.
"Paige, meet the triplets Eric, Joshua and David." Nick said while the others were laughing with my reaction. The triplets nodded at me and I noticed that they each wore a slightly different color of outfit. The middle one stepped forwards and shook my hand firmly. "I'm Joshua. Eric over here is slightly shorter than me and David, so you can't miss him." He said, while pointing at one of his siblings.
David then stepped forward with an amused glance in his eyes. "I am the handsome one of this bunch, but that's obvious, really." He said, causing me to chuckle while a chorus of disagrees flew around me.
"No way! Everyone knows that I can get any girl that I want with these looks."
"Liar! You can't even find a girl with that look." One of them said.
"Hey, genius. We're identical. That means you can't find any girls either, dumbass." David replied.
They were playfully arguing on, until I interrupted them. "Not that this isn't very amusing, but I need to go to my class." I wanted to walk ahead but one of them, I think it was Joshua, stopped me.
"What class do you have?" he asked with a smile.
"I have P.E for the next block and then I'm free for today." I said with happiness to my tone, sending a few smile on the triplets' faces.
"Well, lucky for you, this awesome trio can keep you company." Eric said, grinning wildly. Joshua and David walked around me and held their arm for me, while David teasingly said, "Milady." I playfully rolled my eyes at them, although I couldn't hold back a smile and linked arms with them so they could lead me towards the next class.
When we were near the doors, I looked back at Nick to wave at him and I saw that Jacob had joined his pack, his back turned at me. Nick waved back at me and I smiled while I held out my cellphone and pointed at the clock above the door. Hopefully, he got my message that I would call him after the next lesson. Then I turned around and walked out of the school, the sport grounds as my destination.
---Jacob's POV---
I was late for lunch, one of those hunters was following me everywhere and I was getting slightly ticked off. On top of that, my wolf has been acting up all day, getting more and more anxious over time. I just pushed him out of my thoughts while I made my way over to the pack's table.
Some of them had already left for their next classes, but I saw Nick, Tyler and a few others still sitting there. My hands were slightly shaking when I arrived at the table and Nick immediately caught onto my mood.
"Wow, Jacob! Who has bit you in the butt today?" he said while he looked at my hands. I gave no response while I looked at Damon, who was standing across the room, and gave him a foul look. Nick's eyes hardened when he saw what I was looking at and he let out a slight growl.
"That bastard has been following me ever since Math was over." I growled through the link.
"Then why do you act like he has been, I don't know, attacking pack-members or something?"
I glared back at Nick, unable to hold back the growl that slipped over my lips. Taking a step closer, I hissed, "Because he was poking around for pack-information." The guys immediately tensed, starting to ask questions but I curtly waved my hand. "Later!" I growled, while my gaze went back to Damon, who smirked and saluted me mockingly before he left the room.
That smirk almost pushed me over the edge. I clenched my hands to fists while I struggled against my wolf, desperately trying to hold him back so I wouldn't change in front of the humans that were still present. I took deep breaths to calm down, and noticed the scent that waved around me.
It was a woodsy, slightly sweet scent. It held fragments of pine trees, the scent of rain on a warm day and a hint of flowers. While I tried to locate the scent's source, I calmed down quickly, taking deep breaths of the scent. I remembered that Nick had smelled like this yesterday, so it had to be his sister's scent.
I looked back at the table and noticed that Nick waved at someone behind me, an idiotic grin stuck on his face. I saw the same look on a few other pack members. What the hell? I spun around and barely caught sight of the triplets, guiding a girl outside. My pack was drooling for a girl?
Looking back at Nick, I raised an eyebrow, expecting an explanation. He had a mischievous look on his face while he said, "You know, you really need to talk with my sister. The pack likes her just fine."
I looked back at the doors, but they had already left. Right now, I wasn't in the mood to greet someone new and act friendly to them but it seems that I would have to deal with this Paige sooner or later.
"Fine." I snapped, "What class does she have right now?"
"P.E; and so do you, which means you are already five minutes late." Nick said dryly. I growled slightly while I charged off. P.E was giving by my uncle, who gave me a warning at the beginning of the year; any misbehavior from the pack, especially from me, would be notified to the Alpha.
All the students were already in outfit, a singlet and short with the school's emblem, when I skidded to a halt. Coach Drake looked at me with a scowl while I retreated to the change rooms, so I linked him a frustrated "Hunters.", hoping that uncle would understand.
Apparently he did, because he made no remarks towards me while he finished his safety lecture. On the end of his lecture, he had split the students into two groups, human and werewolf, and ushered us to the baseball field. I couldn't help the smug grin on my face; poor humans, werewolves were so competitive that they didn't stand a chance to win this match.
I saw the triplets waving to a girl in the field, and she waved back with a smile. That's probably Paige. Too bad for her that she was on the human side of the field.
"Joshua, David and Eric, can you guys stop drooling and join the team?" I said, almost teasing, causing some of the guys to chuckle at the cost of David's bright red face. Our team was the first to pitch, so we scattered on the field; I was standing near the last base.
We played fair.... more or less. We threw the balls at human speed, but it was just on the edge, and with a lot of force behind them. The first human was swinging like crazy, but all he managed to hit was air. The girl behind him made it only to first base. The guys were getting slightly bored, paying less attention to the game.
I sat down near the base I was supposed to protect and watched as other players tried to hit the balls. So far, they had two players on the field, but still no points on the scoreboard. I observed one of the girls as she made her way over to the bat.
She had long, slightly wavy brown hair, a small, seemingly fragile frame and I caught a glimpse of her green eyes when she smiled at Joshua. I saw the goofy grin on his face and I immediately knew who this girl was. Paige. Well, her brother hasn't been lying; the girl was hot, for a human, and apparently, she had the male population of the pack drooling over her.
This was going to be interesting.
---Paige's POV---
I knew I was looking too amused but come on; the guys weren't even trying to pay attention to my team. We were humans, well most of us, while they are werewolves, so in their eyes, we are no competition. I grinned when the team captain said it's my turn. True, based on strength and speed, this could be an unfair match. Could be, because they weren't allowed to expose themselves.
Walking towards the bat, I smiled at Joshua, who grinned back at me. I needed to make them think that it would be easy. So I made sure that I missed Joshua's first ball by a mile. I heard the guys on the field laugh, teasing each other that this would be the easiest match that they have won.
"Are you ready?" Joshua asked nicely. I smirked to myself as I nodded, gripping the baseball bat more tightly. Oh, I was ready all right. But were they ready?
Joshua smiled at me reassuring before he threw the ball. I couldn't help myself but I let out a soft chuckle before I swung the bat at full human speed and I did the exact same thing as the werewolves; I played on the edge of my human abilities.
Their heads snapped up when they realized the leather ball had made contact with the bat, but I was already running. I was at the first base when I saw the confused looks on the wolves' team. They were caught off guard, still strolling around, laughing and messing with each other when I landed the hit.
I laughed out loud when I crossed second base, my teammates cheering me on. Right now, we had two players back in with the third still running, so we had 2 points, while the wolves had none. And I really wanted to make my swing a home run.
David started yelling at the edge of the field; they had my ball and they would try to stop me from going further.
I ran at full, but still human speed at the third base and then made my way to the last one, home base. Jacob was standing next to it, probably waiting for the ball so he could stop me. I grinned while I picked up the pace when I saw from the corner off my eyes that they passed the ball to Jacob.
He had a self-satisfied grin on his face while he moved the ball in his hands. I gave him my sweetest smile while I ran at him. The rules were simple; as long as I could touch the base before he had touched me, I was safe.
So when Jacob stepped forwards and tried to stop me, I slid under his open legs, crash-landing right after the base and slammed my hand on the home base while he spun around, standing over me. The whole field was silent for a moment; I could even hear my own hart, beating like crazy.
"SAFE!" Coach Drake shouted and I grinned at Jacob, making sure that I acted exhausted, my chest heaving to catch my breath while I hadn't broken into a sweat yet. My teammates were screeching their lungs out because, thanks to me, we had an end score of 6-0 for us. That had to be a first.
"Homerun!"
"We won? We won!! Yes!!"
"Yeah! Go Paige!"
I was surprised when Jacob held out his hand to help me back up. I smiled and took it, and I was surprised while he pulled me up. The same shocked expression stood on his face, because the moment we touched, tingles ran through my hand and spread over my body. I could only imagine that Jacob felt the same way.
We locked eyes and I couldn't put my finger on the emotions that were swirling in Jacob's. The only thing clear for me was shock. But then something changed, as if my eyes blurred over for a second, enabling me to see what Jacob truly was feeling.
Hope. Love. Relief. Then it suddenly changed into anger and disgust before he growled slightly and spun around, charging of in the woods. I saw the confused look on the team's faces while they looked at the place were Jacob had disappeared. The only one with an understanding look in his eyes was Coach Drake.
I walked back to the change rooms and put my clothes back on before I started to walk back to the school. Picking the cellphone out of my pocket, I texted Nick to let him know that I was walking home. My first day at school was great overall, but it ended on a low note.
Confusion sank in while I was thinking about the emotions that Jacob and I felled before he acted so strangely. What was wrong with Jacob? And why did he become so hostile towards me? I shook my head while I entered the forest. I didn't know what happened...
But I would find out what it was.
