Chapter 4
---Paige's POV---
I was surprised to see Jack skidding around the corner, just before the teacher arrived to open the class. Walking in after the teacher, I looked around in my classroom, expecting to find the normal stools and tables. Instead, the sight of comfortable couches, beanbags and others spread across the class, welcomed me.
Jack chuckled behind me so I turned to him while raising an eyebrow. "Aren't you a little stalker?" I joked, causing him to laugh. He just pushed me in a beanbag while saying "I'm not stalking, this is my class." I scowled at him while I tried to sit comfortably in the bag. He startled me by dropping down next to me, almost causing me to bounce in his lap. He tauntingly wriggled his eyebrows, a goofy grin playing on his lips.
I playfully scowled at him, looking from my beanbag to him. "You sure that you aren't a stalker?" I said. He just chook his head with a grin stuck on his face, leaning back while crossing his arms behind his neck, showing off his muscles in the process.
"Alright, settle down." A calm voice said, causing the students to stop talking and look at the teacher. I couldn't help but notice that he and Jack had an odd resemblance. They both had blond hair and blue eyes, giving them an angelic look, but Jack's hair was in curls, while the teacher's was pulled in a ponytail.
Jack saw my look and smiled at me while mouthing "My father." Oh! That would explain their looks. I looked back at Mister Parker, who was walking around. "Welcome to my class, where we will discover the world of music. Today will be a special day, since it's the introduction to singing." I could hear several students chuckle.
"Don't worry about singing out of tune or forgetting a few lines. This introduction is a means to see who among you are able to be taught singing." Parker said, while turning around to the students and flopping down on a table while he picked up a sack.
He held the sack up so everyone had a clear view on it. "You are going to love and hate this thing." He said while chuckling at the confused glanced he was getting. "This bag contains notes. On every note stands a title and artist." The class groaned in unison. We aren't choosing the song by ourselves?
Parker jumped back up and walked in-between the students, holding the bag up. He walked towards Jack and me and smiled when Jack poked me. I playfully scowled at him and slapped him on his arm. Jack was stretching his arm out, but I slapped it away and quickly took a note out the back. He stared at me and I chuckled. "What about 'Ladies first'?" I asked him.
Parker grinned while Jack playfully looked around. He turned back to me with a smile on his face, "I don't see the ladies. Where are they?" I just rolled my eyes while I opened the note, hoping that it was a song I was familiar with. Jack was looking over my shoulder too while I looked at the note.
" 'Viva la Vida' by Coldplay"
I sighed while I looked back up. I knew the song because Nick was a real Coldplay fan and he had blared it through his speakers the two days since I had arrived. Singing it however was going to be something else.
"Cool," Jack said behind me, "I can play that song on my guitar. I won't be a complete waste in this class." His breath tickled my neck and I shivered involuntary. I turned around to see him smirking.
"You aren't singing with us?" I asked, slightly confused. He shook his head but was interrupted by mister Parker, who stood at the front of the class, with a list in one hand and a pen and paper ready on his desk.
"Before we can start, I would like to know my students better. So I'm going to do a Roll call. Please raise your hand and say the song and artist that you have picked when you are called. " He started calling, and I observed who raised their hands, trying to sniff out the wolves in this class. I had already figured Jack and his father being wolves, but was surprised to add a few more to the list.
"Parker, Jack."
"Right here, Dad. Bon Jovi with 'Have a nice day'." He said while he stood up and picked up a guitar behind the beanbag. I looked at the instrument and back to him, to see if either of them was joking, but they were both very serious. I looked at the beautiful blue and green guitar until the teacher called me.
"Walker, Paige."
I snapped my head up and smiled while waving my hand. "Here Sir." He chuckled and said "The song?"
I blushed lightly; I almost forgot. "Viva la Vida by Coldplay." He smiled at me and wrote it down on his list. Then he stood up, and walked to the back of the class, coming back with speakers designed to connect with an I-pod. He pulled out an I-pod while explaining the rules.
"I don't want anyone to laugh at another while he or she is singing. Those that do are kicked out of class and can stay out." He looked up with a warning in his eyes, what caused some guys to gulp.
"When I call your name, you can choose to sing the song accompanied by the original music or instrumental." He said while he motioned at the I-pod and the guitar in Jack's hands. "I will randomly call out names, so don't think that you're safe just yet." Parker said with a wink.
"Emilie. You're first." He said, causing a human girl to slightly groan while she sat up. She was a reasonable good singer; only the high-notes were out of her reach but she tried her best. We applauded when she was finished, causing her to become bright red while she sank back into her seat. Jack's father chuckled lightly while he said "No need to feel uncomfortable Miss Reign. You did a very good job." He turned back to his list and ran his finger over the list, stopping halfway.
"William, you're up!" he said, marking the boy's name while William grinned and shook his hair out. I sniffed slightly and smiled internally; should've seen it coming that werewolves were more prone to be vain with their looks and wanna be players.
It went on like that for the first lesson while the class had a good time. Some were surprisingly good while some were utterly bad. Mister Parker thankfully stopped the horrible singers in time while he let the good ones finish the whole song. And then, finally, he looked back at the list and put me out of my misery.
"Paige, you're next." He said while ticking my name off. I sighed while I sat up straight, avoiding the gazes of my fellow students. I knew by now that they wouldn't laugh at me when I missed the notes but I wasn't feeling comfortable.
"Music or instrumental?" Parker asked. I thought about it for a moment and decided, "Instrumental, sir." Jack's face lid up with a smile that was stretching his cheeks to the maximum and I chuckled lightly.
I relaxed when Jack started to play the intro, and I started to tap my foot at the beat of the rhythm. I took a deep breath, closed my eyes and sang.
Students muttered softly around me and I tried to ignore it while I focused on the song, and the feeling it gave me. It reminded me about my parents leaving me behind after they discovered my true nature and the imminent threat that the unknown hunters brought with them.
I opened my eyes and smiled when I saw the students stare at me while I sung out the chorus with enthusiasm.
I looked at Jack while he played on the guitar, giving me a comforting smile in the process and I smiled, sending him a wink before I continued the next part. I wasn't scared anymore that Mister Parker would stop me halfway, I enjoyed the song too much to care.
I smiled internally as the sentences kept reminding me of my own life; Mom and dad really couldn't believe that I was a shifter or the threat of the Hunters coming after me.
The students around me were smiling and I saw Parker nod his head from the corner of my eyes when I finished the song.
I sighed and swallowed, comforting my sore throat and glanced around me. They were silent for a moment before they surprised me with a loud applause.
Jack was smirking besides me while Parker said, "Not bad. Not bad at all. There are a few things you could work at but overall, a very good job Paige." I looked up at him and saw that he was genuinely smiling at me. I shyly smiled back at him and sat back in the beanbag. Jack took my hand and squeezed it comforting while he smiled at me. I smiled back and listened to the rest of the students.
I couldn't wait to lunch to see my new friends again.
---Jack's POV---
I couldn't focus during class; maybe it was a stupid idea to go sit next to Paige. Every time that one of us moved, I could feel the warmth of her skin radiating through her jeans or the skin of her bare arms brush against mine. Father's looks and teases weren't helping either.
"Found your mate Jack?" father asked curiously.
"No," I sighed, " Sadly, she isn't my mate..." I trailed off.
"Doesn't mean you can't show a healthy interest in her." father said with a wink before he started his Roll call. "Not all of us are lucky enough to encounter our mates anyways."
I just rolled my eyes and glanced back at Paige. She was looking around intently whenever father called someone. Bet she wanted to know her fellow students.
"Parker, Jack." Father said.
"Right here, Dad. Bon Jovi with 'Have a nice day'." I said while standing up to pick up my guitar behind the beanbag. Paige was giving me and my father looks. I suppose that she really was curious about why I didn't sing. She was looking at my guitar intently, a soft smile on her face.
"Walker, Paige."
Paige immediately looked at dad and waved her hand, politely saying, "Here sir."
"Beautiful and polite! Don't let her slip away Jack." Father teased while he chuckled out loud. I rolled my eyes at him before glancing back at Paige. "The song?" father asked, causing her to blush slightly. It just made her more attractive to me.
"Viva la Vida by Coldplay." She said, looking slightly embarrassed. Father finally left her alone and explained the rules to the class. He called out the name of a red-haired girl across me, causing her to groan slightly. I didn't focus on the singing off the other students, only when I needed to play a song.
Dad was making it a point to avoid her name, what slightly annoyed me. Paige was getting more and more nervous while father glanced between us. Eventually I rolled my eyes at him and grumbled, "Just let her sing already!" He looked amused by my outburst but didn't react to it.
"Are you protecting my sister out of friendly interests... or is there more to it?" Nick teased through the mind link, causing me to groan internally.
"What is this? Twenty questions?" I asked him while I heard father's mental chuckle. I sighed before replying, "Next time your parents adopt someone, make sure she is a mate to someone in the pack. It would make things a lot easier."
Father's voice snapped me out of the link while I could feel Nick's attention turn to our class. "Paige, you're next." Father said. Paige sighed slightly while she sat up. I got slightly excited when father asked her choice of music.
"Instrumental." She said while she looked at me. Laughing lightly, she turned back to the class and started swaying her foot to the tune. And then, she started singing.
Her singing was decent enough, slightly cracked and shaky because she had no confidence in singing, but she still had a beautiful voice. I could feel Nick's amazement through the mind-link while Paige continued to sing. I noticed that she kept her eyes closed while singing.
I couldn't help but notice how beautiful she looked, and I wasn't the only one. Several other guys were looking at her with a little more interest and I picked up a lot of chatter on the mind-link. She opened her eyes at the chorus and I smiled at her, signaling her with a wink that she was good and encouraging her to continue.
She winked back at me before she continued and I could feel the blush on my face when father and Nick send me a mental wolf-whistle. I ignored them while I played the song. Eventually she finished the last tune and the class went silent. Then everyone gave her a warm applause, while father complimented her voice.
"Hey Nick?" I send.
"Yeah?" he asked wary.
"I think you're going to need a stick to beat the guys away from your sister." I grinned while I looked at Paige. "She made quit an impression today."
He groaned through the link, causing several pack-members to chuckle at his predicament. He knew I was right; a pack filled with unmated, testosterone filled guys combined with a beautiful, single girl?
Unless she found a mate among the pack, she was fair game to date, as long as she was willing of course.
---Kale's POV---
I twirled the wolf-fang around in my hand, waiting impatiently on the information that Damon was going to bring. That new girl could be an easy way into Jacob's pack of mutts and if not, she was sure to be a nice distraction. I smirked while thinking about her beautiful face, how she stood up against the Alpha.
Oh, she was something all right. And I would enjoy having her at my side in the end, no matter if it was as a distraction or as bait. It was obvious from the way those mutts clung around her that she was new, most likely uninformed of the savage true nature of those animals.
Damon walked towards me, pushing away some humans down the hall. One of the kids opened his mouth to protest, but Damon made short work of him. After a fast punch in the guy's face, Damon left him with a broken nose and fewer teeth in his mouth.
"So, what did you find out?" I asked him while I kept my gaze on the flood of students, rushing in for lunch.
"She's adopted by the Walkers, so in theory she is a part of the pack." He said and I smiled evilly. Maybe she could be bait AND a distraction? Damon held me out of my musings. "We heard that Jacob refused to acknowledge her as a part of the pack. She doesn't know the truth about those... dogs." He said in a sneer, his face scrunched up in disgust.
I let out a cold laugh. "Things are getting interesting now." Glancing back at him, I saw my excitement mirrored on his face.
"So, what are we going to do now?" He asked.
I smirked evilly while I dug up my cellphone from my pocket. I dialed a number and raised the phone.
"We are going to dig up little Paige's past. Let's see if she has something we can use. And if not, she's a welcomed distraction in this boring little town."
