Chapter 3- Mines of Doom

The Fellowship followed Gandalf through the great caverns, over narrow bridges and through disused mines, with abandoned ladders, and chains. Amara walked in front of Legolas, who kept a close eye on her.

"You're sure you're okay?" Aragorn asked Amara from where he wakes in front of her. She nodded.

They reach a junction with three doorways in front of them. Gandalf looks around him puzzled.

"I've no memory of this place." He murmured.

"Are we lost?"

"No."

"I think we are."

"Ssh! Gandalf's thinking."

"Merry!"

"What!"

"I'm hungry." Amara smirked at the hobbits antics as Legolas sat down next to her.

"Are you alright?" He asked so quietly that only her elf ears could pick it up.

"I'm fine." She muttered, her eyes fixed on the three hobbits.

"I only wanted to make sure. If you and Frodo had been hurt...we didn't stop to make sure."

"Well I'm fine, Legolas." Amara stated, ending the conversation. Just then Gandalf lifted his head and smiled.

"Oh! Its that way." He nodded towards one of the tunnels.

"He's remembered" Merry jumped
up.
"No, but the air doesnt smell so foul down here. If in doubt, Meriadoc, always follow your nose." He said to the hobbit.

They all get up and follow Gandalf out. Amara walked with Gimli as they marveled over the great dwarf work. They come out of the passageway into a great cavern with many columns arising from floor to ceiling. The columns disappeared into darkness.

"Let me risk a little more light." He held up his staff and lit up the world around them. "Behold the great realm and dwarf city of Dwarrowdelf."

A huge cavern is revealed, filled with ornate columns stretching as far as the eye can see.

"There's an eye-opener and no mistake." Sam said in awe.

They walk through the center of the magnificient city. Ahead of them was a doorway with light emitting frim it. Gimli runs towards it

"Gimli!" Gandalf called after him. Amara ran after the dwarf.

"Amara!"

Gimli kneels in front of a white tomb in the center of the room. Amara looks over the tomb and let's out a gasp, falling to her knees next to Gimli.

"No, no, no." Gimli whimpered.

"Balin..." Amara whispered, placing a delicate
hand on the tomb and bowing her head.
The rest of the Fellowship followed them in. Gandalf walked up to the tomb and reads the Dwarven rhunes inscripted upon it

"Here lies Balin, son of Fundin, Lord of Moria. He is dead then. Its as I feared." Gandalf said removing his hat.
Gimli began to cry loudly as Amara let a few tears roll down her cheeks. Gandalf notices a skeleton next to the tomb holding a large book. He passes his hat and staff to Pippin and picks it up. Pages fall out of it. Gandalf blows off the dust.

"We must move on, we cannot linger." Legolas whispered to Aragorn. Gandalf began reading the book.

"They have taken the Bridge and the second hall. We have barred the gates, but cannot hold them for long. The ground shakes. Drums. Drums in the deep. We cannot get out. A shadow moves in the dark. We cannot get out. They are coming." Pippin, who had backed up into a skeleton, reached out a hand to touch the arrow in the skeleton's hand. Its head fell off and into the well, bouncing off the walls. Gandalf turns around swiftly as the whole skeleton, and the chains it holds fall into the well. It bounces down, echoes are heard throughout the mines. Pippin grimaces. Everyone holds their breath, but nothing is heard. Aragorn and Boromir breathe a sigh of relief. Gandalf slams the book shut.
"Fool of a Took!" he puts down the book and takes back his hat and staff, "Throw yourself in next time, and rid us of your stupidity!"

Pippin looks down and as Gandalf turns away a drum echoes through the mines. The drums get louder and faster. Everyone looks around. Sam looks at Frodo's sword.

"Frodo!" Sam exclaimed.

Frodo unsheaths his sword which is glowing blue. A screeching is heard.

"Orcs!" Legolas shouts.
Boromir runs to the doors. Two arrows fly past his head, narrowly missing him, and stick into the door.

"Get back! and stay close to Gandalf." Aragorn said to the hobbits as they back away.

Gandalf puts his arms around them. Boromir shuts the doors quickly. Aragorn comes to help him barr it shut.

"They have a cave troll!" Boromir exclaimed.

Legolas throws axes to the two men to barr the door. Gandalf draws his sword. The hobbits copy his movement but looked more unsure. The doors begin to shake as Orcs slam up against them. Gimli gets up on Balin's tomb, waving his axe.

"Agh! Let them come There's one dwarf yet in Moria who still draws breath." He growled. Amara rose from her knees and drew her own sword, wiping her tears away. But she remained with her back facing the door.

Aragorn and Legolas have their bows drawn. Boromir stands with his sword at the ready. As the door is battered down, Legolas fires an arrow through a hole in it. An orc screeches. Aragorn fires an arrow. The door is broken down and orcs run in. The fellowship fight off the orcs with arrows and swords.

Amara turned, letting out a battle cry and joined the fight. Aragorn looks over to the door as a cave troll, enters, a broken chain around his neck, bashing the walls with his fists. It roars. Legolas fires an arrow into its chest. It saw Sam and raised its club above its head to strike Sam. Sam dove through its legs, confusing it. It turned and followed. Aragorn and Boromir pull on the chain around its neck.

The troll stumbles backwards and swings around to face them. Boromir is still holding the chain, when the troll grabs hold of it and uses it to fling him against a wall. An orc moves to attack the dazed Boromir. Aragorn throws a knife into its neck. Boromir looks at him. Aragorn nods. The troll smashes its club into the tomb, causing Gimli to fall to the ground.

Sam, Merry and Pippin hid behind a pillar. The troll continues to swipe with its club, sending orcs flying and Gimli to the ground. Legolas stands in front of it, two arrows loaded in his bow and fires, sending it stumbling. Gandalf fights the orcs with sword and staff. Legolas from on a platform fights off some orc. The troll heads for him, swinging his chain at him.

Legolas ducks and weaves to avoid it. The chain wraps itself around a pillar. Legolas stands on the chain, then nimbly walks up it to the trolls head. He stands on its shoulders and fires an arrow into its head. The troll screams and reaches for Legolas who nimbly jumps down. The chain snaps, leaving just a collar.

The troll faced Merry, Pippin and Frodo. They all freeze in horror. The troll smashes hid club down as Merry and Pippin run to the side. Amara jumped up onto the ledge and grabs hold of Frodo, dragging him behind a pilliar.

The troll sniffs around the pillar. Amara puts a hand over Frodo's mouth and slides around the pillar as the troll moves to the other side.

Aragorn sees the distracted troll and starts to fight his way over. As Frodo and Amara stopped, once the troll was gone, the hobbit breathed a sigh of relief. Suddenly the troll's face appears in front of them and roars. Frodo stumbled away from Amara, back into a corner. The troll reaches out and grabs him by the foot, dragging him along.

"Aragorn! Amara!" Frodo grabbed hold of the pillar as the elf-dwarf stabbed her sword at the troll.

Aragorn rushes over to them. The troll pulls Frodo off the ledge and he drops to the floor. Aragorn jumps down in front of the troll as it lifts its club to strike. He drives a stake into its chest. The troll screams. Amara jumped onto the troll and stabbed at his chest. Pippin and Merry throw rocks at its head. The troll takes a swipe at Aragorn, flinging him across the room where he falls, knocked out. The movement flung Amara off the troll and she landed on the other side of the room, blood pooling from her head.
Frodo hurried over to Aragorn and tried to shake him awake. The troll pulled the stake from his chest and plunges it at Frodo. The hobbit moves quickly as the stake comes down on the stone wall. He dodges the troll as it lunges for him again. He moved to get away, but the troll stood in the way. The troll plunges the stake into Frodo's chest. The battle stopped for a moment as Frodo fell lifeless. Merry and Pippin look at each other and run towards the troll, swords at the ready. They jump onto its back and attack, letting out loud battle cries.

"Frodo!" Sam shouted as he began to fight towards his friends. Merry and Pippin continue to stab the troll, still on his back. He reaches up and grabs Merry, dangling him by his legs and throws him to the ground as Gimli faces the troll, attacking him with his axe. The troll swipes him to the ground. Gandalf faces the troll and joins the fight. Legolas stands in front of the troll and draws an arrow and fires it directly into his mouth. The troll groans and stumbles. They watch it, as it stumbles and falls to the ground, flinging Merry to the floor. Gandalf hurries over to Frodo. Aragorn crawls over to Frodo as Sam stopped short.

Aragorn turns Frodo over. He gasps and groans. Sam let out a sigh of relief.

"He's alive!" Frodo sat up and looked around.

"I'm alright. I'm not hurt."

"You should be dead. That spear would have skewered a wild boar." Aragorn said in disbelief.

"I think there's more to this hobbit than meets the eye." Gandalf smiled. Frodo parts his shirt to reveal the Mithril vest. Sam touches it in awe.

"Mithril! You are full of surprises Master Baggins!" Gimli exclaimed.

There was a moment as everyone looked at Frodo in awe and happiness, until Legolas turned and looked around the room.

"Gandalf!" He shouted, pointing at the unmoving body of Amara. The wizard and elf rushed forward and kneeled down in front of Amara. Blood covered her forehead and her eyes were closed, but her chest still rose and fell slightly.

The rest of the Fellowship gathered around and watched the wizard as he placed a hand over Amara's eyes and muttered a spell. He removed his hand and waited. Amara's eyes fluttered open and she let out a gasp.

Legolas helped her sit up as she looked around.

"Frodo?" She asked. The hobbit came forward and she stood up, embracing him.

"Thank Valar you're alright." She said. Frodo smiled. As Amara pulled away, her eye caught sight of the silvery Mithril under Frodo's shirt.

"A gift from Bilbo." Frodo said.

"Of course. I should've known." She said with a smile.

Gandalf looked around as screeches echoed behind them.

"To the Bridge of Khazad-dûm!"
The Fellowship ran out of the room as orcs swarmed behind them. Legolas grabbed hold of Amara's hand and helped her stumble after everyone. Orcs seemed to come out of nowhere, climbing out of cracks in the floor and climbing down from the floor, all of them chasing after the Fellowship. Eventually the group was forced to a stop as the Orcs completely surrounded them.

Then a great roar echoed from an archway, that emitted a red glow. The Orcs faltered. Then another roar bounced off the walls and the Orcs screeched, scattering away.

"What is this new devilry?" Boromir asked.

"A balrog, a demon of the ancient world. Its foe is beyond any of you RUN!" Gandalf said. They began running, leaving the large room filled with columns. Boromir ran down the steps but stops suddenly as the steps suddenly end, leaving a drop down into a dark chasm. He teetered on the edge trying not to fall as Legolas ran up behind him and pulled him back away from the edge. Gandalf stumbled in last.

"Gandalf!" Aragorn said.

"Lead them on Aragorn. The Bridge is near!" Aragorn's face contorts in confusion.

The narrow bridge gaps the two sides of the great chasm. A roar echoed behind them as the red firey glow draws closer.
"Do as I say!" Gandalf shouted, pushing him, "Swords are of no more use here."

They turn to the right and run down the steps in front of them, which wind their way to the Bridge. Suddenly they reach a break, a gap in the staircase, which is too wide to step over. Legolas nimbly jumps the gap and looks expectantly at the others. Gandalf looks puzzled. They hear a roar again behind them as the roof above starts to crumble.

"Gandalf!" Legolas beckoned.
Gandalf jumped over the gap to join Legolas. Arrows fire out of the air, narrowly missing Boromir and the hobbits. Legolas turned, aimed one arrow and shot the orc firing directly in the head.

"Merry! Pippin!" He took each hobbit under each arm and jumped with them. As he does so, a greater chunk of the steps they were standing on, falls away.

Legolas continued to aim at the orcs firing at them, killing them.

"Sam!" He picked him up and threw him across the gap to Boromir, then looks at Gimli and Amara.

"Nobody tosses a dwarf!" Gimli said holding his hand up. He took a mighty leap and landed teetering on the other side. Legolas reached and grabbed Gimli by the beard. "Mind the beard!" Legolas pulled him up to safety. Aragorn looked to Amara and she shook her head.

"Like he said. Nobody tosses a dwarf." With that, she jumped, far more gracefully than Gimli, and landed next to Legolas.

More steps crumbled away, separating Aragorn threw Frodo to safety further up the steps and clings onto the stairs as a great portion of them fall into the chasm. The gap now, is too wide to jump. The rest of the Fellowship look worried. Frodo wobbles on his feet. Aragorn stood up and steadied Frodo by holding onto his coat.

"Steady! Hold on!" Aragorn shouted. The doorway entrance behind them glows red. A great roar comes from just behind it. The doorway and roof above crumble, and a great chunk of rock falls from the roof, into the staircase behind Aragorn and Frodo, creating another great gap. The column on which this part of the staircase is, begins to crack and the staircase sways.

"Hang on!" Aragorn shouted.

The staircase on which they are standing continues to sway from side to side. Everyone looks frightened.

"Lean forward!" Aragorn instructed. Frodo leaned forward as did Aragorn, propelling the staircase towards the Fellowship.

"Come on!" Legolas called, holding his arms out.

Aragorn and Frodo jump. Legolas grabs hold of Aragorn and Amara caught Frodo. As they run down the remaining staircase, the part of the staircase they were standing on collapses completely, falling into the chasm. They run onto another room. The whole place is now in flames

"Over the Bridge! Fly!" Gandalf called, ushering everyone over the bridge. They run past Gandalf, who turns towards the growing flames. From out of the midst of the flames a great black, winged creature with a horned head appears. Flames wreathed around it. It roars at Gandalf, breathing fire from its mouth. It walks after them with great strides, as one by one, the Fellowship cross the narrow bridge, Gandalf taking up the rear. Half way across the bridge, he stops and turns to face the Balrog.

"You cannot pass!" Gandalf commanded. Frodo and Amara turned at his voice.

"Gandalf!" Frodo shouted in horror.

The balrog stretches its wings and draws itself up to full height in front of Gandalf.

"I am the Servant of the Secret Fire. Wielder of the Flame of Anor." The balrog reaches down and draws its sword in front of Gandalf, and holds it high above its head, "The dark fire will not avail you." He holds out his staff in front of him, glowing white, "Flame of Udûn!"

The balrog brings its sword down upon Gandalf who protects himself with his staff, bringing a crash and flash of great light. It drops its sword and roars at Gandalf.

"Go back to the shadow!" Gandalf growled. The balrog puts out a cloven foot onto the bridge. He wields a great firey whip above its head.

"You shall not pass!" He raises his sword and staff above his head and brings his staff down hard upon the Bridge. The balrog snorts at him, raises his whip and takes another step forward. As he does so, the Bridge collapses and the balrog falls into the chasm. Gandalf grunts and turns to walk away. As he does so, the tail end of the balrog's whip snakes up and around his ankle, dragging him down. He clings onto the edge of the bridge. Frodo dashes towards him, but Boromir holds him back.

"No!" Boromir shouted to the hobbit.

"Gandalf!" Frodo shouted. Gandalf tries to hold on by his fingertips. Amara ran forward, oushing passed Aragorn and Legolas as they tried to hold her back. She ran across the bridge but stopped halfway as Gandalf gave her a desperate look.

"Fly you fools!" With that, he disappeared over the edge.

"NOOoooooooooooooo!" A strangled cry erupted from Frodo as he struggled against Boromir.

Amara let out a scream of outrage and ran forward. She stopped at the edge and collapsed, seeing the fading form of the wizard.

"Gandalf!" She cried out. Someone grabbed hold of her and she struggled against them.

"No! Noooo!" She screamed, trying to free the strong grip around her waist. But despite her struggles, she was dragged out of Moria.

There in the open air, she collapsed, letting out a heart wrenching scream that echoed against the mountain. The tight hold around her waist loosened and she was encased in a gentle hug.

"Uma il- nalla. Ro -aya il- caela merne ta." {Do not cry. He would not have wanted it.} It was Legolas comforting her, which shocked Amara for a moment. She wanted to pull away from the one who belonged to the race that shunned her and her family away, but she didn't move as Legolas tightened his hold on her.

"Legolas! Get them up!" Aragorn called.

"Give them a moment! For pities sake!" Boromir pleaded.

"By nightfall this hills will be swarming with orcs! We must reach the woods of Lothlörien. Come, Boromir, Legolas, Gimli, Amara, get them up!" Aragorn pressed. Amara stood up, leaving Legolas' warm embrace and wiped her eyes. She spotted Frodo walking away from the group.

"Frodo!" Aragorn called. The hobbit stopped and turned, tears making paths down his dirt covered face. Amara walked towards him and pulled the Ringbearer into a tight hug. He clung to her as he sobbed into her cloak. And she found herself repeating the elf Prince.

"Uma il- nalla over ho. Ro -aya il- caela merne ta." {Do not cry over him. He would not have wanted it.}
