Chapter 15- To Win
Amara sat staring at the barricaded door, tapping her foot rapidly as her hand absentmindedly plucked at her bow string. The banging of the Uruks outside was getting louder and louder and Amara's grip on her bow tightened.
"Are you okay?" Amara sighed and stopped plucking at her bow string.
"I'm fine." She said as Legolas sat down next to her. Legolas placed a hand on her knee, halting her foot tapping. Her heart beat faster at his touch.
"May be you should head down to the caves. See how Eowyn is faring." Amara jerked away from Legolas' touch and shot him a glare.
"I said I'm fine, Legolas." She snapped before her face softened, "You're still bleeding." She whispered. Legolas looked at his shoulder.
"I guess I forgot about it in all the chaos." Legolas said. Amara placed her bow to the side and grabbed some bandages.
"Hold still." She said as she wrapped the cloth around his shoulder and arm. Legolas watched Amara carefully as she sat back and looked up at the elf.
Again, the two were locked in their own world, staring into each others eyes. Amara swallowed hard and coughed, tucking a piece of her short hair behind her ear. She looked down and broke their eye contact. Legolas sat back, unaware that he had begun to lean forward.
"Legolas! Amara!" Aragorn shouted from across the keep. They both leaped up and ran to help the ranger barricade the door.
"The fortress is taken. It is over." Theoden said.
"You said this fortress would never fall while your men defend it. They still defend it. They have died defending it." Aragorn turned to the king.
"Is there no other way for the women and children to get out of the caves?" Theoden does not answer but looks at the floor. "Is there no other way?" He pressed.
"There is one passage." One soldier spoke up. "It leads into the mountains. But they will not get far. The Uruk-hai are too many."
"Tell the women and children to make for the mountain pass. And barricade the entrance!" Aragorn commanded.
"So much death...What can Men do against such reckless hate?" Theoden asked.
The Uruk-hai ram the door again. Aragorn pauses to think before looking at Theoden intensely.
"Ride out with me." Theoden turns to look at him. "Ride out and meet them."
"For death and glory." Theoden murmured.
"For Rohan. For your people."
"The sun is rising." Gimli said looking at the high window. Everyone fell silent and look at the dim light.
"Yes.........Yes.........The horn of Helm Hammerhand......shall sound in the Deep......one last time." Theoden said.
"Yes!" Gimli cried. Theoden placed his hand on Aragorn's shoulder as the door is broken down.
"Let this be the hour when we draw swords together."
Gimli leaves to blow the horn of the Helm Hammerhand. As it sounds Theoden speaks.
"Fell deeds, awake. Now for wrath......now for ruin and a red dawn."
Aragorn draws his sword. Theoden puts on his helmet. Gimli blows the horn.
The Uruk-hai break through the inner door. Theoden, mounted on his horse, next to Aragorn, Amara, and Legolas raises his sword in the air
"Forth Eorlingas!"
They gallop through the masses of Uruk-hai through the hall, killing those in their path. Gimli sounds the horn again, as they leave Helms Deep and ride onto the causeway where thousands of Uruk-hai still crowd. Suddenly Aragorn is drawn to a white light and looks up.
Gandalf appears on top of the hill top next to Helms Deep riding Shadowfax who rears
"Gandalf." He whispered. Amara turned and looked as another man rode up next to the wizard.
"Theoden King stands alone." Gandalf said.
"Not alone." Eomer said as he raises his sword. "Rohirrim!"
The Rohirrim ride up behind Eomer. The Uruk-hai stop fighting and look up.
"Eomer." Theoden said in disbelief.
"To the king!" Eomer commanded.
Eomer, Gandalf and the Rohirrim ride down the steep hill towards the Uruks who surge forward holding their spears in front of them. As Gandalf nears the uruks he sends out a bright white light from his staff, blinding the uruk-hai. They ride over the uruk-hai and into their masses, killing and fighting.
The Uruks begin to retreat as the men let out a roar of victory. Amara continued to slice and stab at the passing Uruks until they had all retreated. She rode back into Helm's Deep with the rest of the Company and dismounted from her horse.
"Amara!" Eowyn came running around the corner. She tackled the elf dwarf into a hug. Amara smiled and hugged the maiden back.
"I wanted you to meet my brother, Eomer." She said as she released Amara. She chuckled.
"I believe I've already met him." Amara said. Eowyn tilted her head as her brother came around the corner. The knight stopped when he saw the two maidens.
"Amara..." he breathed. Amara smiled.
"It's good to see you again, Eomer. Though I doubted we ever would." Eomer stepped forward and took her hand.
"You are stronger than you look, Milady. I am happy to see you again."
"How do you know eachother?" Eowyn asked, confused.
"He was there when I nearly died. Eomer stayed with me until he thought my life had left me." Amara explained. Eomer smiled and nodded.
After they all talked for a while, Amara excused herself and left to walk around the ruins of Helm's Deep. As she rounded a corner, she heard two familiar voices arguing.
"Final count.....42." Legolas bragged as he walked up to Gimli.
"Forty-two? That's not bad for a pointy-eared Elvish princeling. I myself am sitting pretty on 43."
Legolas swiftly draws an arrow and shoots it between Gimli's legs at the Uruk-hai he is sitting on
"Forty-three." Legolas said proudly.
"He was already dead." Gimli said.
"He was twitching." Legolad defended.
"He was twitching......because he's got my axe," he grabs his axe which is embedded in the Uruks head and moves it so that the dead Uruk moves too. "embedded in his nervous system!" Gimli shouted. Amara couldn't help but laugh at the sight of the two.
Both turned around to see the elf dwarf standing there.
"Sorry to intrude, but it seems that I've won." She said. Gimli looked bewildered.
"What?" The dwarf ask.
"I'm sitting on 67." Legolas smirked as Gimli began protesting. Amara held her hands up in defense as the dwarf went on and on about unfair advantages and miscalculations.
Amara climbed up onto her horse and rode up next to Legolas and Gimli.
"Ready?" Legolas asked. Amara nodded with a smile.
"I'm excited to see my hobbits again." Amara replied. She quickened her horse to a gallop, catching up to Gandalf, Eomer, Theoden, Aragorn and Gamling.
"Sauron's wrath will be terrible, his retribution swift." Gandalf said.
They look to the other side of the hill on Mordor. Thunder and lightening erupt and the darkening sky turns red
"The battle for Helm's Deep is over. The battle for Middle-earth is about to begin."
Aragorn looks at Gandalf who looks back at him with a grim look on his face. Galdalf looked back out to Mordor.
"All our hopes now lie with two little Hobbits...somewhere in the wilderness..."
