Chapter 9

The front wall of the mansion exploded, causing a bunch of rubble to go everywhere. The Baudelaire's screamed, causing the people standing in the rubble to laugh crazily. But it wasn't a normal laugh. One of the laughs they recognized as Joker's, but another they didn't recognize. It was something they had heard once, a high-pitched, childish laugh that mocked you. It mocked you, it called you a freak, a loser, and it seemed to gloat at you. 'Look at me', the laugh seemed to say, 'I'm happy, I look beautiful, I've got everything. Look at you.' The people emerged from the rubble, and that was what shocked them all. The man was obviously Joker, with his florescent green hair and chalk-white skin. But the girl, the girl was something else. She had long white hair with red-and-blue tips, and her skin was so white, she looked almost sick. It wasn't like Joker's where it looked like he purposefully dyed it, she looked like she just puked her guts out and then padded her face heavily with clown makeup.
"Batsy! Where are you? We just want to play with you, Batsy! And the stupid brats you keep around. Hey Puddin'?" the woman asked, gesturing to Joker, "Can you go take care of these brats in the dining room? I need to go find someone." "Of course, toots. I'll be right with you." The Baudelaire's had a very shocking, well, two very shocking realizations. One, they would die soon if they didn't do something quick, and two, that woman was Harley Quinn. Joker approached the Baudelaire's, gun and knife in hand. Violet and Klaus looked around for anything that could be used to defend themselves, and Sunny, as if on command, crawled under the table and protected herself. Violet looked around, and picked up a glass cup. Klaus grabbed a heavy book entitled, 'History of In-and-Out: 1790-1850' and held it, threateningly. "You think I'm afraid of you?" He them fired gunshots, to which Violet and Klaus scurried under the table with Sunny.
Violet, once the gunshots had ended and Joker was distracted laughing, sneaked out, broke a piece of glass from the cup, and, once Joker had turned around, stabbed him anywhere she could. He had a stab wound on his arm, on his chest, through his pants, anywhere she could. Joker used his knife on her multiple times and Violet ended up getting a lot of cuts. She didn't mind though, as she was saving, well, herself and her siblings.
Klaus did something he'd never expect himself to do. He smacked Joker upside the head with the book. Joker was immediately knocked out, lying on the floor, smiling madly. "Sunny, stay there!" Klaus yelled, and they ran over to go and save Lucy. But what they saw shocked and terrified them beyond comprehension.
Harley was kicking and hurting Lucy wherever she could. Lucy was lying on the floor, bleeding out, and she looked terrible, even more terrible than she already looked. Harley kept yelling insults at Lucy, and kept kicking her, "Worthless brat! You thought that you could ever compete with my puddin'? NEVER!" Her accent, ( that Klaus and Violet had never heard before ) made her sound like she was saying 'nevah', which would have been unsettling enough. What Lucy whispered next shocked Violet, not Klaus though, "That's not true, mom. You love me. I know you do." Harley laughed, and uttered words that killed all of them. "Love you? Listen Lucille, I have never loved you. You are a worthless piece of shit. I love Mistah J, always have. And you, you, how could you even think that I love you? Or those pathetic bratty Baudelaire's?" Lucy looked absolutely heartbroken, and it made Violet want to bawl and Klaus to punch something. Suddenly, Batman smashed threw the roof of the room, and started to hit Harley wherever he could. But Harley wasn't focused on hurting Batman, she was focused on hurting Lucy. Two stabs in her leg, one in her belly, and a small cut on Harley's body.
Violet and Klaus huddled with Lucy as she bled out, and tried to will herself to speak. But she couldn't. They could only huddle and look on as one of the most respected and loved people in the Baudelaire's lives disappeared in the shadow of an insane woman in front of them. It was scarring, but they couldn't seem to draw their eyes and prey to whoever was listening. After Harley was finally knocked out, it felt like a century past. And during that century, Lucy had not fared so well.
Her blood was sprawled all over the floor. She seemed to be clinging on to the last bit of life she had, and that wasn't a very big piece of life. Her skin had paled so much her hair indeed looked green, and she seemed to be crying. Batman looked onto Lucy, sadly. "I'm sorry, but you don't have long left. The doctors can only do so much, and we're so far from a hospital. I'm sorry." Lucy, instead of being threatened by this news, pulled the Baudelaire's closer. "Listen," she pleaded, "listen." She took a deep breath, and started whispering. "Violet, never let go of inventing. Help the world, for that's all you can do. Klaus, read. Read and read until your eyes pop out and you're begging for sleep. Teach children the importance of literature. Work, work no matter what. Be the best person you can be. That's all I can ask." She pulled Batman over, and said, "I leave the apartment to Violet Baudelaire. Let her do whatever she wants with it, right now. And if you have the chance, please, please," what Lucy said next made all of them be struck dumb on the spot, "tell my mother that I love her. Tell her that no matter what, I'm still her little Lucy. That's all I can ask." Lucy's breath slowed down, and her eyes closed. The Baudelaire's were just looking on, until they fully realized that Lucy was dead. Suddenly, they balled their eyes out, right next to the superhero. They cried and cried, they cried when the police came and interviewed Batman, and they silently cried when they found out Mr.Poe was coming to pick them all up. Sunny, who even though was not there for Lucy's passing, still cried when she found out what happened.
Mr.Poe had come up to the manor, and was driving the Baudelaire's back. "I'm very sorry about what happened, Baudelaire's," he said, and offered them some peppermints. They just shook their heads and pushed them away. Not only because of their allergies, but because they really, really didn't feel like they deserved anything. They had lost so many people, Lucy being one of them, and they felt awful. They had lost Justice Strass, and Uncle Monty, and Charles, and Doctor Orwell, and now, Lucy. They were blaming themselves, looking at each other like they were stranded with little chance of hope. "Children," Mr. Poe confronted them, "I know you are extremely upset about your friend's death, but cheer up! You're going to go to boarding school, where you'll meet plenty of people just like Leslie!" Violet sniffled, "Lucy. Her name was Lucy."
