Chapter 6
"Do you have the feeling Lucy and Aunt Harley aren't telling us something?" Klaus asked Violet, his head buried in a book about the animals of California. Violet looked up from her book on Tesla, and she looked positively shocked. "Klaus, how could you say something like that? They've been so kind to us, and you accuse them of keeping secrets?!" Klaus hung his head while going back to reading. "I just thought that Lucy's reaction to our question was a bit weird, maybe she was just nervous for some reason. " Violet put her book down and went over to the almanac and newspaper section, and started pulling out books and magazines.
"Violet, what are you doing?" Klaus asked. Violet smiled, and said, " If we want to at least have a semblance of what Lucy and Aunt Harley are hiding, we need to do research, don't we?" "I thought you didn't want to." "Just because I said we shouldn't accuse them doesn't mean we shouldn't investigate. I'll go get Sunny. See if anything there could be useful, and take notes." Violet left for Sunny's room, and, carrying her little sister, swept off to the library. Klaus held a pencil, and with Violet and Sunny now in the library, they were really to get to work.
Klaus took notes and told them all important information. Sunny lightly bit on the important pages so that they could locate them easier without damaging the books, and Violet used some items from the inventing studio to create a device that held up her book and turned the pages so she could focus on taking notes. "Aha! I found something!" Klaus cried, and Violet sat on the armrest of his seat, looking at it. "Harleen Quinzel Dead?" Violet read, confused. "But Aunt Harley isn't dead, she's alive, we know that!" "Wait, Violet, read some of the article!"
"Harleen Quinzel, famous psychiatrist trying to launch to stardom, has been reported dead after a shoot up at Arkham Asylum, caused by the Joker himself. It is known that no body was found, but there was no evidence to confirm or deny that she is still alive.
Quinzel, a psychiatrist, wanted to become a model through her youth. Before her 'death', she was very close to completing that dream, and, in fact, was rumored to be quitting her job in order to pursue her career. But alas, she died, and her job was given over to now-actress, Vicki Vale. Vale and Quinzel were rumored to not like each other very much, but despite the previous fact, Vale has stated her life wasn't as much fun without her dear 'Harley'. "
"Girlia!" Sunny, astonished, said, which meant, " We call her Aunt Harley! There's more going on! Is there any more of the article?" Klaus said, "No, Sunny, that's it." "Is there any more, Klaus?" "No, Violet, there isn't more of the article, but there is. more newspapers."
Throughout the rest of the night, the Baudelaire's read newspapers and attempted to piece together Aunt Harley's story, one article at a time. Klaus and Violet soon realized that, once you got a closer look at her, Aunt Harley and Harley Quinn looked almost identical. The Baudelaire's thought that Aunt Harley and Harley Quinn HAD to be related, in some way.
"Ok, Baudelaire's, time for bed!" Aunt Harley proclaimed happily, walking in to the library. "What's this, Violet?" Aunt Harley grabbed the piece of paper out of Violet's hands, and gasped. What was on the paper, the words,
Harleen Quinzel and Harley Quinn HAVE to be related!
made Aunt Harley rip up the paper. "Do not even think such things about me, children! Harley Quinn is, er, was an awful person who I do not want to even be remotely in the same city in, let ALONE be related to! Where did you yet such a dangerous idea?!" Violet hung her head and gestured to the table full of magazines, newspapers, and almanacs that Klaus was actively scribbling notes about.
"I can't believe you all! Now go to bed so I have time to process what awful things you wrote!" Klaus, begrudgingly, grabbed the book, trying to smuggle it to his room. "Up up up! Klaus, give me the book, now!" Klaus shamefully handed Aunt Harley the book as Violet picked Sunny up and carried her. "Now if I hear a peep about this 'Harley Quinn', you'll be grounded for a whole month! Goodnight, Baudelaire's."
