Chapter 5: Before & After Time
At the moment, Shiniko was helping Mr. Matsukata take a few necessities back to the school. Little did they know the danger they were about to face.
While Mr. Matsukata was riding a bicycle through a little passage way between two buildings, Shiniko was jogging next to him with a bag of supplies in each hand.
Laughing could be heard from somewhere above, Shiniko and Mr. Matsukata looked in the direction of the sound and saw two guys in midair. From that point on, everything felt like it happened in slow motion.
The two guys crashed down on Shiniko and Mr. Matsukata. Shiniko shut her eyes and braced herself for impact.
A second later, she opened her eyes and got up. There was a slight pain in her right wrist; it was swollen just a little.
"Sprained my wrist, huh? Symptoms don't seen too bad, probably a mild injury," She thought in silence.
She looked around and saw some of her classmates. At the end of the narrow passage was a man, who was selling flowers, calling an ambulance.
"Whose idea was this." Shiniko demanded, glaring at the group of student before her.
No one answered.
Shiniko sighed in frustration, "Just get to class and tell Koro-sensei what happened." Someone was about to say something, but Shiniko didn't want to hear it. "Now." She demanded giving them all a death glare, and they all quickly apologized before walking away slowly.
Minutes later, the ambulance arrived. The medics helped Mr. Matsukata into the ambulance and Shiniko went with them.
Shiniko got her wrist checked out, and as she predicted, it was only a mild sprain. Her wrist was bandaged and the doctor said she'll be fine in a few days, but she isn't allowed to put weight on her right hand.
By the time she got back to school it was already lunch time. All the students that witnessed the incident apologized. For those who weren't there, asked a lot of questions, which Shiniko had to answered.
At the end of the day, all the students involved with the incident this morning went to the hospital.
Karasuma was with them outside. Shiniko was in Mr. Matsukata's hospital room.
"I'm so sorry this happened Mr. Matsukata," Shiniko apologized.
"Don't worry about it, it wasn't your fault," Mr. Matsukata reassured.
Just then, Karasuma and his co-worker walked in as Shiniko was heading out.
She found her class just outside the entrance of the hospital. Koro-sensei wasn't there, so they informed her that studying for the midterms was prohibited, but she couldn't care less if she could study or not.
She lead her classmates to Mr. Matsukata's hospital room so they can apologize.
The next day, Shiniko had to take everyone to the school they'll be volunteering at for the next two weeks.
"I'm afraid Principal Matsukata has been hurt, and we won't be seeing him for awhile," One of Mr. Matsukata's assistants told the kids. "Until he's back, these young men and women will lend us a hand. Isn't that nice?"
All the kids faces lit up with joy and they cheered upon recognizing one very familiar face. Shiniko was surrounded by all the little kids. The rest of the class had no idea what was happening.
"Okay everyone, that's enough. Say hi to the rest of the older students, they're here to help too," Shiniko said cheerfully while smiling.
Soon, the rest of the students had kids crawling on them, literally. Shiniko looked around the room, all the kids seemed so happy and excited that there were older students around to play with. Two boy pantsed Takebayashi, and Shiniko caught it all on video.
Sakura was in one of her bad moods again. She called the group of students in front of her losers. Out of nowhere, she held up a broom, but the second she took another step, the floor beneath her collapsed.
Shiniko sighed, "Sakura, you need to be more careful." She picked her up out of the hole. "Are you ok?"
"Yeah, I'm fine," Sakura answered.
"Great, another repair," Shiniko thought sarcastically to herself as she stared at the hole in the floor.
"You're getting it fixed right? The building. I mean, it does seem like its getting rickety," Isogai commented concerningly.
"If only we had the funds. Our principal has a soft spot for children stuck on the waiting list for primary school; takes them in at rock bottom rates. He can barely afford the faculty he has, poor man works himself to the bone," The assistant explained. "But luckily for us, Shiniko started to help out around here not too long ago; she did almost everything around here." She mentioned.
Once the word that Shiniko helped around prior to the incident, all the students had the same shocked expression and thought, "Just who is Shiniko?!" As Shiniko was fixing the floor, that just doubled their shock.
While a group of students were putting on a play for the kids, the rest of the class was gathering materials for renovating the old building. Shiniko was more than happy to help, but since she has a sprained wrist, she could only carry a few things.
Sugino was carrying two bags of cement and Sugaya was carrying a log to the pile of materials they already piled up.
Shiniko carried a log using her left hand and a bag of cement mix on her right foot, she hopped on one foot to the piles of material without breaking a sweat.
Everyone still thought the same thing, "Just who was she!!!!!"
The cat Kurahashi was playing with the kids, climbed up a tree and was too scared to come down. So, Okajima catapulted Kimura into the tree. The cat scratched him in between his eyebrows. Shiniko got the first aid kit.
"Kimura, get over here," She instructed. He let the cat go and walked over to her.
"Sit down." Shiniko took a cotton ball and soaked it with alcohol before dadding it on his scratch.
Kimura tried not to look straight ahead, so he just kept his eyes shut the whole time. After Shiniko finished disinfecting the scratch, she used a bit of ointment on the scratch and she was done. Most of the guys were a tad jealous, they all had an irked mark on their forehead.
"And done," Shiniko placed everything back into the box neatly and went back inside to put it away.
They accomplished a lot in two weeks, they finished upgrading the building, tutored the kids, and much more.
Today was the day Mr. Matsukata was released from the hospital. When he got back, Koro-sensei and some students gave him a tour of the added space to the building.
"Hey Nagisa!" Sakura shouted as she ran up to Nagisa. She showed him her math test, she came in second.
"Look Shiniko!" Sakura showed her test to Shiniko with a big smile.
"Good job Sakura! Keep up the good work, here's a small prize like I promised," Shiniko said with a smile and handed her the prize. Then, she went and showed it to Mr. Matsukata.
The kids and Mr. Matsukata, as well as the assistant, bid the class farewell as they left.
The next day, they had there exams. Lots of students from E Class were kicked out of the top spots.
The sun was starting to set, Shiniko was sitting on the school roof with Koro-sensei on the main campus.
A moment later, Nagisa, Okajima and Sugino walked onto the main campus looking all gloomy.
"What a total let down," Teppai said as the Big Five approached them. "Oh well, guess that first time was a fluke huh?"
"We didn't even need to crush you at pole toppling," Seo added.
"Aw, what's the matter dorks? Kitty cat got your tongue?" Koyama teased.
"Grades are the end-all be-all of this institution. The bottom feeders have no right to address those in the top echelon," Sakakibara reminded.
Shiniko got fed up with this, she jumped down from the rooftops, landing perfectly and quietly on her feet.
"No kidding. Than by that logic, I guess you got nothing to say to me," Shiniko said along with Karma, who just so happened to show up.
She took a quick peak at his test papers. He did much better than his midterms and came in second.
"Don't get cocky, Teach will probably be like, "It doesn't count unless you come in first," Shiniko commented.
"Don't you people get it, I'm the only one here who gave it his all this time around. Everybody else was pulling their punches to give you idiots a fair shot. See they were being nice cause we knew losing would be worse for you than for us," Karma explained.
"Excuse me!" Teppai exclaimed upon hearing what he had to say.
"So yeah, this was a freebie and you only get one," Karma turned around and started to walk away with Shiniko. "C'mon guys."
This left the Big Five and his classmates stunned, but the Big Five was more on the angry side.
The next day, the whole class apologized for what they did. Shiniko was sitting next to Professor Bitch listening to what they had to say.
At the moment, Shiniko was with Koro-sensei. Why you might ask. Well, Shiniko wanted to stretch her muscles and do some parkour using the mountain terrain as training. Soon, she was hit with the smell of food that's being barbequed. She followed the scent, and once she found where it was coming from, Koro-sensei freaked out. He didn't want the other students to know, so he bribed her with the food he was making.
After a while, Nakamura jumped down from the cliff behind them, landing on the barbeque rack. Koro-sensei freaked out once more and used his speed to gather the kabobs before they fell. The whole class was in front of him before he realized what was happening
"So, they finally manufactured the protection gear I requested for," Shiniko thought while sipping on a can of soda Koro-sensei gave her.
Later that evening, Shiniko laid down on the roof of the school building.
"Hey, Miss Yukimura. How's it going? I know it's been awhile, but everything's goin' well. Your sister's doing okay, but I don't know what the future will bring, you know, ever since that day..." Shiniko finished and closed her eyes and became one with the darkness.
"Shiniko, what are you still doing here?" Koro-sensei asked.
"It's nothing, just thinking 'bout the past..." Shiniko stayed quiet for a second. "Hey, Koro-sensei, do you ever wish you could go back to the days when you were... human?"
Silence.
"It's alright, you don't have to answer," Shiniko stood up. "I'll see you tomorrow." With that she left.
