Chapter 45: Future Time

The on-site inspection squad was already inspecting the mountain campus early in the morning trying to collect any evidence that was left behind.

We sat in our seats to hear Karasuma's briefing.

"The target is gone, and the earth is saved. Thank you for all your hard work this past year.

I imagine there are some things you'll find hard to swallow. You'll have all eyes on you for a while, I'm afraid, and I'm sure they'll be asking you to keep quiet about confidential matters.

I'll do my utmost to protect you, of course, but allow me to apologize in advance." He bowed to the class.

"You don't have to apologize, Karasuma-sensei,'' I said from the back of the class.

"It's all good, Karasuma-sensei," Maehara said. "We'll do our best to get this settled peacefully, too."

"We don't want to complicate things for you either," Okano added.

Kataoka stood up from her seat, "But in return, we do have one request. Please allow us to attend Kunugigaoka's graduation ceremony today. Our days spent battling with the main campus are yet another precious memory we made with Koro-sensei."

"Sure, I'll arrange it." Karasuma agreed with a soft expression. "After all, that's why I'm here."

Isogai stood up as well, "All students, please rise!" We did as the class president instructed and we all bowed to show our gratitude.

"Karasuma-sensei, Bitch-sensei, thank you both for everything you've taught us!" Isogai said on our behalf and we all thanked the teachers together.

After that, we separated off into our own groups talking about the grad ceremony amongst other things. Since the school was on lockdown, the ceremony will be held at the civic centre.

Karasuma arranged the transportation for us to get to the civic center safely.

I walked back to my desk away from everyone else to text Shuu to remember to bring my uniform before he left for the ceremony.

They didn't need to know who I was texting or why. If I told them we were 'siblings', they would immediately ask why and how since we have different last names, and that's cutting it too close to how much I want these people to know about me.

Luckily for me, Shuu texted back almost immediately, relieving me of the anxious thought of not having the proper attire for the ceremony and having literally the whole school watch me walk across the stage to receive my diploma in the government issued protective gear we received months ago.

After that was sorted, I went up to Isogai.

"Hey, Isogai, mind telling the class that before the ceremony ends, we have to take a commemorative class photo—teachers included," I asked, since I didn't want to speak in front of the whole class. "It's to complete our yearbooks—a request from Koro-sensei."

He nodded and got the class's attention to tell them the plan. Karasuma and Irina were also onboard for the photo.

When we got to the civic centre, we got our school uniforms and went to the washroom to get ready.

After the graduation ceremony, we were allowed to leave and celebrate with our friends and family.

Isogai gathered the class and teachers together while I set up the camera on the tripod. I fiddled around with the settings a bit before taking a test photo and making more adjustments.

"Alright, get ready," I said and pressed the button. I rushed to my spot and smiled just before the camera shutter a few seconds later.

I went back to the camera and looked through the bursts of photos.

They all look good... Now the hard part is to choose the perfect one to develop...

I turned off the camera and put everything back in its protective bag. Luckily, it could be worn as a crossbody bag so it wasn't in the way too much.

I'd rather not give this over to someone else to look after...

The class took a bunch of photos together before meeting their parents. I took lots of photos with everyone else and joined other's photos as well.

It was also my first time seeing him wear the school uniform properly too, so how could I not.

The second a reporter noticed the ceremony was over, he announced to the others. They all rushed in to take photos and tried to interview us.

Karasuma and his subordinates held them back. They were shouting questions and waving their microphones and cameras around like they were at a concert.

They don't care about what we feel or what we went through, they only care about getting a juicy scoop and twisting our words to publish a story...

Some were able to push through the makeshift barricade. Before they could get to us, the Big Five and the rest of A-Class formed a barrier around us and they also carried a school banner over us.

They helped escort us outside safely, which was very much appreciated. I walked in the front with Kataoka and Isogai.

"Thanks for walking us out," I said to Shuu. "But what's with the change of heart?"

"For many of us, our ties and our relationship end today, but we are still students who studied at the same school. To abandon you now would bring shame upon me as your ruler." he answered.

I stood next to him as everyone boarded the bus one by one.

"Akabane?" Karma was about to get on before Shuu called him. "Seems you're the only one staying on. Once all this blows over, I'll have you spill the beans. You'll tell me about this Koro-sensei guy who managed to make you all who you are."

"Sure, I don't mind," Karma agreed. "It might have a hard time getting through that stodgy, old skull of yours, though." he teased before getting on.

"Was my explanation not enough?" I asked in a whisper.

"Just wanted a second perspective," he quickly answered as Seo shoved Nagisa to board the bus. "Now, you're the last one, get on already." Shuu pushed me forward and I got on. "I'll see you later." I nodded as the door closed.

I walked down the bus aisle and flopped down in the empty seat next to the window.

We took the picture like you wanted Koro-sensei... it'll be added in the yearbook soon...

I looked out the window the whole ride, reminiscing about the year we all experienced. There was still a looming, empty feeling inside that'll probably never go away.

For a while, I was put on house arrest as instructed by Father, and he had Shuu be my prison guard while he dealt with his new job—he had to turn over his administrative powers.

I didn't have a problem with being under house arrest: I didn't feel like going out after all that's happened anyways.

That night, the class group chat exploded with everyone sending photos they took with each other.

I got what I needed to get done while serving house arrest.

I chose the perfect picture we took at the ceremony and got that printed and delivered to everyone with a little note instructing them to put it in the clear sleeve at the back of the book.

In the dead of night—around 2:45 AM if I remember correctly—I sneaked out my bedroom window and made my rounds around town delivering them.

I had Ritsu calculate the fastest and most efficient route while avoiding any kind of surveillance for the delivery mission. I made it back just before sunrise. I changed back into pajamas and climbed back into bed.

Lots of stuff happened after that. Kunugigaoka Academy came under fire for putting their students in harm's way. The E-Class system was also seen as problematic and was abolished.

After we left, the E-Class campus closed its doors for good.

The class was presented with the money for the assassination.

I heard from Kayano that we each got a bit of money—enough for education and a down payment for living on our own—not that I needed it, but it was nice to have.

They also decided to donate here and there, and made one big, final purchase together before returning the remaining amount to the government in thanks for their year of support—I saw the news about it online.

Karasuma's reputation will surely rise...

I woke up sometime in the afternoon. When I checked my phone, I saw a message from Karasuma.

How unexpected...

He wanted to know if I was still going to continue my work as an assassin and offered me a job where I can work alongside him and Irina.

I told him I would give him an answer later.

I didn't do anything for the remainder of the day. I couldn't even spend the day focusing on myself without feeling like I was wasting time.

After dinner and a warm bath, I started to read Koro-sensei's Rules To Live By book by the window.

Overtime, the moon began to slowly crumble under its own gravity. It'll eventually become a smaller sphere. The explosion also brought it closer to the earth; the size, shape, gravity, and orbit would start to look and feel very similar to how it was before its destruction.

The crescent moon that symbolized our year together would slowly forget its shape...

I read 15 pages before I started getting drowsy, so I called it a night and got ready for bed. I had a dream, but by morning I only remembered bits and pieces of it.

After scrolling through my phone in bed, I remembered Karasuma's offer.

I made up my mind; I'll accept his offer. I messaged him, on the condition that I was allowed to keep working as an assassin on the side. Karasuma was fine with that and I got the job.

I started working for Karasuma immediately after my house arrest was over—which was conveniently when the new school year rolled around.

I was partnered up with Irina a lot for missions and I got to travel which was a plus.

Our E-Class group chat slowly became less and less active as high school started, but we still checked up on each other once in a while and made plans to hang out together—especially over summer breaks.

I hardly ever joined them when they made plans to go out since the start of the job—there was a lot I still had to learn, but I still kept my online presence active, I just didn't contribute as much.

I wish I could hang out with them, but I have to uphold my responsibilities to succeed.

Goodbye, Kunugigaoka Junior High...

Goodbye, Class 3-E...

Goodbye, Koro-sensei...

Thanks for the memories.
