Chapter 28: Round Two Time
After ringing the doorbell, I waited patiently for someone to answer. Eventually, a woman with navy blue hair opened the door.
"Good afternoon, ma'am. Are you Ms. Shiota by any chance?" I asked politely.
"Yes, I am," she confirmed.
"Fantastic. I'm Shiniko Kuroshira from Kunugigaoka and I'm here to deliver your child's report," I informed and handed her the envelope.
"Well this is new, thank you very much," Ms. Shiota took the envelope and noticed my arm band. "By the way, why does your armband have three red stripes instead of two?"
"Not to boast or anything, but I'm actually the school's top student..." my voice went a little quiet at the end and I laughed awkwardly.
"My, that's a huge achievement, I bet you have big dreams for the future," Ms. Shiota complimented.
"I sure do," I lied and smiled, making it more convincing. "Well I best be going now, it was nice meeting you."
"The pleasure's all mine," Ms. Shiota smiled and gently closed the door.
There's something... off, about her...
At the moment, I was going door to door to all the students who attended Kunugigaoka Junior High with their report cards as requested by Uncle Asano.
Shortly after class began, I got called into the office early in the morning. I went down to the main campus and headed straight for the principal's office.
My heart pounded harder against my chest the closer I got.
What if he knows... Did Karasuma rat me out?... There's no way he would though...
I knocked on the door and went in when I heard a faint, "come in". The doors closed behind me as I entered.
"You wanted to see me, Principal Asano," I remained calm on the outside, but panicked internally.
Please don't tell me he found out...
"Yes, I did. I have a task for you," he took out a few boxes of envelopes out of his drawer. "I need you to deliver the students' reports to their home. We're starting to prepare for finals, so all the teachers are busy. My driver will take you where you need to go." he explained.
Oh thank god...
"Of course," I accepted the job. "I'm happy to help. Is there anything else you need?" I asked as I took the boxes off his desk.
"Just one minor thing if you don't mind."
"Not at all, what is it?" I asked.
"Can you get some groceries for tonight on your way back?" he added.
"Not a problem," I said as I walked out.
Oh wait, that means I have to wear my uniform properly...
When I got to the parking lot, I saw the driver. He immediately came over and helped me load the boxes into the car. He already had the addresses on his gps and we started our trip.
To save time and money, we managed to deliver all the reports en route to the grocery store, then back home and back to the school.
It was a silent journey.
When I got back, everyone was talking up a storm.
So, the time for career counselling begins...
I was standing with Karma and Kayano behind Nagisa's seat. He was still unsure about his goals for the future.
"Uh oh, Ms. Irina's top," Kayano pointed out, "It still has the tag on."
"She's not used to buying stuff off the rack," Karma mentioned.
"I'll tell her," I offered. Just then Nagisa stood up.
"I'll take care of it," he volunteered.
"Be my guest then," I stepped back a bit.
Nagisa made his way to Irina and like a ghost, he managed to rip the tag off without Irina or the surrounding students noticing. Leaving both Karma and Kayano stunned.
He's got potential... I wonder...
"Hey Shiniko," Karma snapped me out of my thoughts.
"Yeah?"
"Do you wanna hit up Thailand or Morocco after graduation?" he asked, showing me two travel flyers. "I hear Thailand's pretty popular."
"Sure, Thailand, choose whatever you like," I sighed and walked back to my desk. I took out a book to read while waiting for Nagisa to return.
Once Nagisa was finished discussing with Koro-sensei, I made my way towards him.
"Hey Nagisa, can you wait for me after school?" I asked. "I need to tell you something."
"Uh, sure," he answered nervously.
"Thanks." I went into the faculty room and made sure the door was closed behind me.
"Last but not least! So, have you chosen a career path, Shiniko?" Koro-sensei asked.
"Koro-sensei, you know I already made up my mind a long time ago. I'm an assassin and I don't plan on quitting anytime soon," I stated, staring into Koro-sensei's eyes.
"Of course. As your teacher, I can only do as much as encourage you to follow your dream and keep you on the right track. If you wish to continue being an assassin, then so be it. I can't and won't stop you," Koro-sensei had a soft smile on his face and placed a tentacle on my shoulder.
"Thanks for understanding," I said with a small smile. "I'll be leaving now," I left and went back to the classroom.
Good, seems like everyone left already.
"Thanks for waiting," I thanked Nagisa as I was gathering my stuff together to leave.
"No problem... So, what did you want to talk about?" he asked.
"What did you choose?" I asked. "Like for your career path?"
"Oh... uhh..." he hesitated, but answered anyway. "... an assassin..."
"I see," I acknowledged. "I can help you if you want." I offered.
"What do you mean?" he questioned.
I stopped in my tracks. Nagisa noticed and stopped to look back. I had a dark, dead look on my face.
"What I am about to tell you is confidential and only between the two of us. Do you understand?" I stared into the depths of his soul and waited for an answer.
"Y-yes!..." he answered nervously.
I think I did too much...
"Look," I softened my expression a little. "I didn't mean to scare you, but if anyone finds out, you'll never see or find me again." he didn't say anything, but nodded.
"Now that we're on the same page..." I took a deep breath to try and calm my racing heart.
"I am an assassin, and I don't mean like how in class we claim to be "assassins". I am a professional assassin, I kill people for a living. My hands have been heavily soiled by blood, and there's no going back" I said calmly.
"I can help you become an assassin if you still so desire, and you can train under Lovro-sensei with me. So, what do you say?"
He froze for a second, contemplating the offer.
"That's really sudden..." he scratched the back of his head. "I think I need some time to think about my future. Thanks for the offer... and don't worry I won't tell anyone."
"Thanks for hearing me out, and I-... Sorry this is hard for me to say, but I... I trust you." I said gently. "C'mon let's go."
I started continuing walking down the mountain. Nagisa caught up moments later.
"Can I ask you a question?" he asked.
"Sure."
"If you're a professional, do you have an assassin name or codename?"
"Like I would tell you, not to be rude or anything but that would defeat the purpose of me saying that you'll never find me." I smirked.
Good, it seems like they forgot...
Nagisa awkwardly laughed, "Right..."
Eventually, we went our own way and headed home.
Did I do the right thing?... I hope I don't regret this...
By the time I got home, I noticed my brother's shoes were already by the door. I went to my room to put my stuff away and change. Then, I knocked on my brother's door.
"What is it?" he answered. I opened the door and not much to my surprise, he was studying, like always.
"I'm cooking dinner, what do you want?" I asked.
"Just make anything you like," he answered, eyes never leaving his work.
"Alright then..." I sighed and closed the door.
I went back downstairs and started making dinner. While I was cooking, Uncle Asano came home and went straight to his office.
"Dinner's ready!" I shouted loud enough to let the two know it was time to eat. They eventually made their way to the dining table.
As usual, it was another quiet meal. At the end Shuu helped me with the dishes, but hurried back to his room after we were done.
He must be studying hard...
I took a shower and did a quick review of the school work before getting ready for bed. I gave myself some free time before going to bed to wind down from today's events.
The next day after school, Koro-sensei came into the classroom cosplayed as Karasuma.
Oh my god, that looks nothing like him!...
I held in my laugh.
I mean I see the resemblance, but still...
I took a nice photo of him as the students were criticizing his cosplay.
When the meeting started between Ms. Shiota and Koro-sensei, some students, including myself, were hiding outside the faculty room window.
Ms. Shiota lost control at the end of the meeting and exploded at Koro-sensei. When she started yelling, I froze and covered my ears as my heart raced and my breathing got heavy. Luckily, no one noticed.
One phrase kept echoing through my mind.
"When I'm done with you, your eyes will be wide open."
I went back inside to the faculty room to get some of Koro-sensei's macarons after Nagisa left.
Later that night, while I was doing some light training on the mountain, I found Koro-sensei watching a TV show in class when I returned to class.
"Shiniko, what are you doing here?! It's late at night, shouldn't you be at home?!" Koro-sensei shrieked.
"Don't worry about me, I was just training," I took a seat nearby and watched whatever he was watching.
As we were watching, I saw something bright in the corner of my eye and went up to the window to see what it was.
"Koro-sensei, someone's here," I informed him. "And they're holding a torch."
"Nyuu?" He stood up to take a look.
We heard some talking, then it turned into yelling.
"It's Ms. Shiota!" I whispered loudly.
But what's she doing here?... and she brought Nagisa?...
Then out of nowhere, the lit part of the torch got sliced off. I frantically looked around and found where it came from. It was another assassin.
Oh, it's that guy... I never really liked him...
Nagisa walked up to the assassin and performed the clap-stunner once again, but this time he followed what The Reaper told him about the technique.
He has what it takes, but why?... Is there something bigger that I'm missing...
Koro-sensei quickly got into his Karasuma cosplay and grabbed a fire extinguisher before heading out, I followed after him.
"Some undesirables have made this their hangout, so I recommend staying away at night," Koro-sensei said as he extinguished the flames.
"Now then ma'am, Nagisa has quite a bit of growing left to do, I agree. What he needs more than anything is a loving mother. Don't take his stubbornness so seriously, every little bird needs to leave the nest at some point, that's the way of things," Koro-sensei said.
Every little bird leaves at some point, but I guess some of us had to leave earlier than expected...
Ms. Shiota fainted, but I caught her easily.
"She'll be fine, the adrenaline rush just got the best of her," I said as Koro-sensei helped carry Ms. Shiota.
"I"ll take the three of you back to her car, I'll drive you home," Koro-sensei added and took them back to the car.
Koro-sensei sat in the driver seat, Nagisa sat in shotgun and I sat in the back with Ms. Shiota resting on my shoulder.
She reminds me so much of her...
I rolled down the window to stare into the night sky, and let out a big sigh to rid the heavy feeling in my chest.
I wonder if they're doing alright?...
As time passed, we eventually arrived at Nagisa's apartment. Koro-sensei helped Nagisa take Ms. Shiota inside.
Nagisa and I thanked Koro-sensei for the ride and I said my farewells before venturing off into the night.
I had a lot on my mind that night.
