Chapter 2: The Forest Between You and I

Yoshio's POV:

In between our houses was a forest. One that we would spend the entire summer exploring every day.

We'd wake up early at the crack of dawn, with lunch in hand, and not return home until the sun set.

One day we'd climb trees. Another, we'd follow ants and find their colony. It seemed like the forest was filled with adventures.

Our parents never worried that we would get lost, the two of us would always find our way home.

As we grew older, it was no longer a land of adventure. It was instead a place, where we could just talk. It was just a place between her and I.

There was a small stream in the middle of the forest. It separated my property with her property. That was our meeting spot.

Whenever the other had a problem they would sit and wait there. Eventually the other would appear there. Kinda like a sixth sense.

We shared our thoughts with each other there. Whether it was school, home, or literally anything. She would talk about the things she did with her friends. I would talk about the things I did with my friends.

We didn't need to call on a phone, we didn't need to text. This spot is all we needed.

Hidden deep inside the forest.

The forest between you and I...

Kanan's POV:

In my third year of high school I trudged through a thick forest. After walking about ten minutes I found myself staring at a small little stream.

Memories came flooding back as flashbacks of he and I filled my brain. We spent all of our time there together.

From the time we were little to when we entered our final year of middle school, this is where everything happened between him and I.

The last summer before he moved away we were sitting at our usual spot here at the stream. Things were definitely a lot quieter between us since he admitted to me that he was leaving.

"How far?" I finally gained the courage to ask.

"Too far." He answered grimly.

"Why?"

"Parents."

"Is it because of my family? Because we have the same business?"

"I don't know." his eyes showed hints of redness. "Probably not. We would've just combined if it really came down to it."

"So then why-"

"My parents called it a 'fresh start.'"

"But all of a sudden?"

"It's not uncommon for people to move to a different place for high school."

"But you're going across the country!"

"Then I guess it really is a fresh start huh?"

Even in this moment he tried to look at the positives.

"How do you really feel about this?" I said looking directly at him.

"I actually think it's a good thing." he said looking away.

It was easy to tell if he was lying or not. Even from a young age he'd avert his eyes whenever he told a lie.

"There's no point in trying to lie to me you know?" I glared at him, annoyed.

"Then here's how I actually feel." he walked over the stream, stood right in front of me and stared directly at me.

Before he pulled my face to his and kissed me. And for a moment, everything felt right.

That...

That was the last time we met in this forest.

That was the last thing to happen in the forest.

The forest between you and I...
