Chapter 1: A Bond Between You and I

Yoshio's POV:

She and I... we were kinda inseparable.

We grew up together. Actually, it was more like we grew up as one.

I was born on February 9 at 11:53 P.M.

She was born on February 10 at 12:06 A.M.

I was the only child in my family.

She was the only child in her family.

My family ran a diving business in the small town of Uchiura.

Her family ran a diving business in the small town of Uchiura.

Are you beginning to sense the pattern here?

The first time we met that I could remember, I was five years old. Apparently we had met on plenty occasions before that, but as far as I remembered this was it.

Our parents, while running the same exact business, were good friends. Talks of even combining their businesses into one were always conversations they had. It was only natural that their two children would grow up and play with each other.

When I first met her, she smiled brightly at me. I smiled right back. Just that five seconds between us, we already knew that we'd be together for a long time.

That's when we started hanging out together.

That's when I met...

Kanan Matsuura.

Kanan's POV:

He and I... we were definitely inseparable.

Growing up together, I would constantly be reminded how he was older than me.

Which who cares it was thirteen minutes!

He was always the competitive type, just like I was. He and I would always have competitions to see who was better. It could be something as intense as a race, or something as dumb as who could stay up the longest.

Just between you and me though, I won most of them.

We grew up together. Like perfect childhood best friends. If things stayed the way we thought they would, we probably would've been married.

Many people asked if we were going out. Making me wonder if we were going out myself. We spent all of our time together anyways.

And towards the end of our third year of middle school, I had a feeling he was going to ask me out.

He had left a note on my desk one day that said to meet him at the usual place.

That being the top of the school roof.

We always met there. Whether it was lunch, skipping class, or for important discussions.

This seemed like the latter.

When I arrived to the rooftop at the end of the day I saw a shadowy figure by the fence.

"Yo!" I greeted him with a smile. "I got your letter!"

I looked up expecting to see him match my energy like usual.

This time he had a sad smile on his face.

"You know, I wish I didn't put that on your desk." he sighed.

His tone was different.

"What's wrong?" I punched him on the arm. "Did a girl break your heart or something?"

"No." He replied, "Even worse."

That's when our world turned upside down.

"I'm moving... across the country."

That was when we stopped hanging out together.

That's when I said goodbye to...

Yoshio Miyazawa.

Thanks for reading chapter one of five of this short story! I decided to give myself some new material to work with while drafting up more stuff for my long-term books.

Hopefully you all enjoyed and I'll see you next time!
