NINE: A LITTLE PHONE CALL GOES A LONG WAY

Previously

As the bell rings, someone sits next to me while I'm texting. "Oh god it's you," the voice says. It's suprisingly familiar. "What do you mean by you?" I ask and look up from my phone.

To be greeted by the familiar face of Satan.

Oops, I mean Madison.

Amber's POV

"Oh god. What are you doing here Madison?" I ask her angrily. "Well you know how I never went to Ms Spry's lessons? I went here instead," Madison says. "Who's that?" She grabs my phone off me and looks at my texts. "Who's Mitch?" She snaps.

"One of the people that adopted me," I whisper as the teacher walks into class. "Now can you give my phone back?" I ask. She scrolls through my contacts. "Who's Adam? And Ty? And Jason and Quinton and Jerome and Ian?" She whispers. "I'll tell you if you give me my phone back," I tell her.

She hands it to me, obviously curious. "Adam adopted me, but he lives with Ty, Jason, Jerome, Mitch, Ian and Quinton," I mutter as Mr Anderson puts down his coffee and shuts the door. "We'll be doing a quiz before covering pages 13 - 14. I can show you the current things we've been learning after class if you like," he says as I slip my phone into my pocket. "I'll be fine, thank you," I say. He nods.

"The way this quiz is going to work is that I'll write the equations down here and you can write them in your textbooks," Mr Anderson declares. "I hope you fail," Madison mutters. Mr Anderson looks at Madison as she turns towards her textbook. "Did you have a comment, Madison?" He says. "No," she says. "No sir," he corrects and turns back to the board, half full of equations.

Obviously the quiz is going to start off easy and then get harder, judging by the first question that was a throwback from grade six or seven. Identify the mean, median and mode of the number sequence on page twelve? It's a pretty easy question when I look at the sequence.

Eight, seven and five, I write, remembering stuff like that from grade six. The next questions are pretty easy. I can tell Phoebe's struggling to convert a fraction to a decimal. By her athletic clothes, I get the feeling she'll want to be in the girls soccer team they recently introduced, or at least that's what Evie said.

"You need help?" I whisper. "Why would she want help from you?" Madison angrily hisses. "Madison Lee, if you have a problem with Miss Dahlberg I strongly recommend moving," Mr Anderson declares. "Buuuuuuuuurn," Phoebe mumbles. Madison glares at her and she looks away and pretends to be taking the quiz.

I remember the conversation about who's sirname I would have. It was either Mitch or Sky, but Mitch said I should have Sky's last name because he adopted me. I could have been Amber Hughes but I like Amber Dahlberg anyway. Adam and Amber, I'd told myself. But I'm getting distracted and I just want this over with.

Around the end of the quiz (and the end of the period) there's a question Phoebe is stressing out over. You have to turn a fraction into a percentage and it's reseanably easy for me, but Phoebe obviously has a hate - hate relationship with math.

"Hey, Phoebe," I whisper as Mr Anderson writes the last question on the board. "Divide the numerator by the denominator." Phoebe looks at me and then write it down. "Now move the decimal point two places to the right," I instruct. "Thanks. I'm not exactly a math magician," Phoebe says. "It's okay. There's a hate - love relationship going on between me and math," I mutter.

Phoebe smiles and continues the quiz. I finish writing the last question just as a boy up the front of the class does. "I saw you talking to Dai eariler," Madison snaps quietly. "Do you like him?"

"What? No," I whisper. I honestly do NOT like Dai. I don't have a crush yet. "Good because I like him and I'm pretty popular here so lay off," she whispers. "Wait, did he say your last name was Lee?" I ask quietly. "Yeah, but not for long," she snickers. "Ms Spry wants to adopt me." I look at her. "Wouldn't you just stay at the Orphanage?"

"Unless she gets married, yeah, duh you thickhead," Madison snickers as I grab my phone. For some reason, my pin doesn't work. I try it again but it does the same thing. I study Madison, who's smirking and texting. If I was her, what would I do? Ms Spry bought Madison a phone and I secretly know her passcode. It was 4 7 2 6 so I do that combination.

Unsuprisingly, it works.

I change the passcode to my locker combination and connect to the school's WiFi. I put my phone on silent so no one hears the vibrations. I'm pretty sure you aren't allowed phones in class. I tell Mitch about Phoebe, Evie and Kitty while everyone's finishing.

For the next seven minutes, people finish the quiz and hand in their results. I slip my phone into my pocket and grab my textbook, pencil, eraser and my sharpener. Somehow I find my way to my locker, where Evie and Kitty are waiting. "Did you survive?" Kitty immediately asks. "Yes," I grin as I do my locker combination.

"English wasn't too bad," Kitty says. "I had science class but I survived. What have you got next?" Evie asks. "Kitty and I have gym," Evie says. "But I accidentally left my gym uniform at home because I was doing stuff after school on Friday." Kitty groans. "Why gym? I hate gym!" She groans. "You just hate Coach Tangara," Evie says.

"Who's Coach Tangara?" I ask. "Miss Tangara is nicknamed The Tank, and she's as tough as anything," Kitty says. "Kitty, did you accidentally on purpose leave your gym uniform somewhere?" Evie says. "Yeah," Kitty says. "I have an excuse," Evie says. "Amber can pass for having no uniform. I wonder what Coach will say."

"We don't need a gym outfit today, so don't worry Evie, geez," Kitty says and closes her locker. Evie closes her locker. "Dai alert," Kitty says as I put my phone and textbook in my locker. "Come on let's go." I quickly put my pencil, eraser and sharpener away before closing my locker. Kitty and Evie drag me off just as Dai comes up to the locker.

We go to a field near the gym. "Coach said that we would be doing sprints and some sort of physical fitness assessment," Evie tells me. Kitty groans. "Why couldn't we get stuck with Mr Dakin?" Kitty huffs. "We'll most likely get stuck with him at the fitness assessment," Evie says as we line up. "It's A to Z. What's your last name?" Kitty mumbles.

"Dahlberg," I mutter and head towards the start of the line. Evie shows me where to go. After Tangara does attendance, she shouts "Okay, three laps around the track!" She yells and everyone takes off running. Kitty and I have to sprint to catch up with her.

"Geez... Evie..... your fast," I pant. Evie slows down to a jog, her Bajan Canadian hoodie flapping around. Evie zips it up and continues running. Kitty fans herself with her Deadlox shirt as we pass onto the second lap. We're around the front of the pack and I'm relieved when we've finished.

"On Wednesday we'll be having our physical fitness assessment," Tangara announces. "The assessment will consist of three categories: endurance, strength and agility. Each category will be scored. Students must earn an adverage score of seven out of ten in order to pass the assessment."

That shouldn't be a problem. And if I'm having trouble I can ask Evie and the guys. Tangara leads us over to the far side of the field where someone has set up a little obstacle course. "I've set this up so that you can try your hand at the types of strength, endurance, and flexibility activities that will be on the test," he explains.

I eye the course. It looks like a standard boot camp type drill with a rope wall, tires to run through, a bar for chin ups and a place to measure flexibility based on how far you can reach forward while sitting with straight legs. We all line up, with Evie first. She breezes through it, then sits at the end to cheer us on.

Kitty goes next and she's pretty good at it, even though she doesn't consider herself athletic. I go through it pretty easily, according to Evie. We cheer on the students, but not Dai, who tries to flirt again. "You're pretty good at that stuff," he says. "Gee thanks," I say, readjusting my beanie. It's hot with my jacket on, but at least it's short sleeved.

"Why don't you go flirt with someone who cares?" I say as Kitty fans herself with her Deadlox shirt.... again. Evie's sitting under a tree nearby with her hood up. I get up and join them. I'm not interested in Dai, and I honestly wonder what would happen if Mitch or Adam found out. Judging by the text, they wouldn't be too happy.

My classes seem to fly by and it's lunch before I even know it. I invite Phoebe to sit with us. I can see Madison flirting with Dai at a table crowded with people. I roll my eyes. "Hey Phoebe, do you like gaming?" Kitty asks. "I like gaming, but I suck at Mortal Combat. Even if I play as Scorpion or Kratos I always lose," Phoebe mumbles. I notice Kitty brought lunch from home. Evie bought her lunch, like me.

"Hey Amber!" Madison comes over to our table. Evie groans quietly and puts her hood up. Madison seems to like the black and red jacket. "Isn't that the jacket that guy has?" She snickers. "He's cute," she whispers, not so quietly. Evie goes red. Kitty rolls her eyes. "Why do you only have guys on your comtact list anyway?" Madison asks.

"She took Amber's phone in homeroom," Phoebe says. Kitty was obviously confused, judging by her expression. "I already told you, Adam lives with 6 other people," I say. "You sound a lot like a prostitute," Madison snickers. Evie looks ready to punch someone.

"Why don't I call one of them and we'll see, huh?" I say, getting up. We've all finished our lunch. "I'll go get my phone and we can go into an empty classroom and call him." Madison raises an eyebrow. "Fine then," she says. I go to my locker, followed by Madison, Evie, Phoebe and Kitty. Once I've done the locker combination and gotten my phone, we duck inside an empty classroom.

"I'm gonna text him first to check he's not recording," I say as Madison shuts the door. Are u recording? I type. No but I was Mitch says ten seconds later. "Recording what?" Madison says. "They record gaming and vlogging videos," is all I let off. "Do you want to do a video call?" I ask. "Why not?" Madison snickers. "I doubt they care about you." I angrily send him a video call on Skype. Then he picks it up and Mitch goes on screen. Evie puts her hood up.

"Hey Amber. Hi Evie, Kitty and I'm guessing that's Phoebe," he says. They wave when he says their name. I notice Mitch looked at Evie longer than the rest. "Random question Mitch, am I a prostitute?" I ask him. "No, why?" He asks. "Because Madison here thinks I am just because I have only guys on my contact list," I say, filming Madison. I can hear Jerome asking something in the backround. He appears in the backround.

"What's going on?" Jerome says. I can see Mitch getting mad. Jason comes up by Jerome. "Hi Jerome, hi Jason. According to Madison," I film her, with her solemn expression, arms folded as if she doesn't believe me. "I'm a prostitute because I have only guys on my contact list."

Jerome looks shocked, then he storms off to punch something. "Is Madison there?" Jason asks, mad as well. "She's right here," I say, filming her. "Tell that little bitch if she says something like that again I'm gonna..." Jason obviously doesn't want to say it, but we get the idea. "She's here so you can say it to her face if you like," Evie says.

"If you do that again, I am going to fucking..." Jason rages in the backround before walking off. "Madison, some people must be pretty stupid to judge someone by their contact list," Jerome cries. He's not teasing this time. "I hope you got the message. See you soon Amber," Mitch says. "Bai!!" Evie, Kitty and Phoebe all make faces towards the camera with me. "Bai!" Mitch cries, smiling. That obviously cheered him up a bit as he ends the call.

"I hope that got through to you," Evie says. "Looks like Jerome, Jason and Mitch didn't find that funny. If you like Mitch, he seems to like someone else so try if you like, but he has his eyes set on someone else," Kitty says, looking at Evie. "Who, me?" Evie says, blushing under her hoodie. "Your joking," she says as the bell rings. "I hate you," Madison snaps and sasheys away, as if she's better than us. Phoebe, Evie, Kitty and I wave to each other and split up as we walk to class.
