Worried
Later that evening.
"James, can you drive? I'm too lazy.
"Sure mom."
Jessica throws him the keys and Sam says, "Why didn't you ask me?"
"I looked up and saw James first."
"You can drive if you want, Sam. I don't care." James says.
"No it's fine, I don't feel like it."
"You just wanted to make a fuss about it, right?" Jessica says.
"I mean.. everyone quiet."
Jessica laughs and yells for Michael.
"Michael baby, come on, we're leaving!!"
He comes down and Jessica smiles.
"Look at my baby boy! You're dressed so nice!" She hugs him.
"Uh.. thanks ma." He chuckles.
Jesica kisses his head and says, "Alright, let's get out of here.
They were meeting everyone at the twins favourite restaurant.
"Happy birthday, boys!" Sarah runs up to them.
"Thank you, Sarah!"
Everyone greets them, before they take their seats.
Jessica sat beside Sarah and Evan's 6 year old daughter.
"Jessie!" She hugs her.
"McKenna! How's my sweet girl doing?"
"Good! My mommy says you have a real baby in your tummy!" She smiles.
"I do!" Jessica giggles.
"What is it?"
"Oh I don't know yet! We'll find out next week." She smiles.
"When's it coming out?"
"In December! Right around Christmas time." She smiles.
"Wow! Cool! Maybe you'll have it on Christmas like Jesus!"
"Maybe!"
"How big is it?"
"About the size of a potato!"
"That's what I ordered!" Her eyes widen.
*Gasp* "You're eating my baby!" Jessica says making McKenna laugh.
"What are you gonna name it?"
"You know, I haven't really thought about names yet! Do you have any in mind?"
"Mhm!" She nods.
"Let me hear them!"
"McKenna!"
"Haha! That's your name, silly!"
"I'll share!"
"Well thank you very much, the baby and I appreciate that." She chuckles and touches her stomach.
"Can I feel?!"
"Sure!" She moves back and McKenna touches her tiny bump.
"Hi little baby!"
Jessica smiles as she talks to her stomach.
"Is it moving?"
"Not yet! I mean, yes it's moving around in there, but it's still too little for me to feel."
"Oh! Okay then."
"Are you done hounding Jessie with questions?" Sarah asks.
"I just wanted to know about the baby!"
"Yeah, she's sweet!" Jessica smiles and rubs McKenna's back.
***
"Let's see, what should I get? I finally have an appetite, and now I can't get full!"
"Well that's good, sweetie! Eat up, everyone! It's on grandpa Al." Dorothy pats him.
"Wow, thanks grandpa Al!" Jessica jokes.
"Let's see, do I want the lobster, or a burger? Well I want something cheesy... hmmm.. what do I want? What do I want?
You know what I should do, is, order something spicy. Maybe that'll get you to move, huh?" Jessica pats her little bump while she thinks.
***
"Woo! Jessica! That smells spicy! Are you trying to make that baby move all night?" Sarah asks.
"Hah! I was just craving spicy food." She shrugs.
After she finished eating, she leans back with her hands on her stomach and takes a deep breath.
"That was good!"
"Good! How would you like to hold a baby so Evan and I can finish eating?"
"Give her to me!" Jessica smiles as she sits up and reaches for the baby.
Sarah hands Rylie to her. Rylie is Sarah's six month old little girl.
"Hi baby girl! What's the matter? What are you fussing about?" Rylie looks at her and stops fussing.
"What?! Haha! All better now?"
Michael, who was sitting next to Jessica reached over and played with her hand.
"Say hi, Mikey!" Jessica says in a cute voice.
"Can I hold her?"
"Really?"
Michael never showed interest in holding her before, so Jessica was surprised.
"Yeah. Can I?"
"Yes, of course!"
She hands her to him and the baby smiles at him.
"Hi!"
"Aw she likes you, Michael!" Jessica rubs his back.
"Yeah!" He says as Rylie opens her mouth and slams her face into his cheek.
"Ew.."
Jessica laughs and says, "Get used to the Ew feeling, mister."
"Yeah, your momma's gonna need your help! Especially once your brother's leave for college. Babies are full of Ew moments!" Sarah says.
Jessica laughs and Michael looks at the baby as she bursts into tears.
"What happened? What'd I do?!" His eyes widen.
"You didn't do anything, she's probably hungry. Here, give her to me."
Jessica takes her from Michael and he grabs a napkin to scrub down his cheek.
"Sarah, do you have a bottle for her?"
"Yeah, here you go. Thank you so much, Jess!"
"Oh no problem! I have to practice, it's been a while for me." She chuckles.
Dorothy smiles and says, "You look so beautiful with babies! You're just a natural mama!"
"Thanks!" She giggles.
***
"Would anyone like desert?"
"Ooh yes! I'll take cheesecake!" Jessica smiles.
"Before that comes, I have to use the restroom. I'll be back." Jessica excuses herself.
"Let me come with you, she needs a diaper change."
Sarah starts changing Rylie and Jessica goes into the stall.
When she comes out to wash her hands, Sarah asks, "Are you okay? Seems like you're worried about something."
"I'm fine."
"No you're not. Tell me."
*Sighs*
"I'm just worried about the baby."
"What do you mean?"
"I haven't felt it move yet."
"Well you're still early on in your pregnancy, maybe that's why."
"No, with my other two pregnancies I felt movement from eleven to fourteen weeks! Not huge movements, but there was something!
Usually seventeen to eighteen weeks is when Sam would feel them move.
That's why I ate spicy food tonight. I was hoping it would make it move. What if somethings wrong?"
"Jessica, I'm sure everything's fine! You go to the doctor next week, right?"
"Yeah, that's when we're supposed to find out the sex. If something's wrong, I couldn't take it! I would have failed Sam by killing the last child he gave me."
"Jessica, don't talk that way! You're still putting on weight, you're eating and craving things! The baby's okay, he's probably just lazy!"
"Maybe..."
***
On the way home Jessica rested her hands on her stomach and kept poking to see if the baby would kick back. She wanted to feel a flutter a little roll; something! But she felt nothing.
"What are you doing, mom?" James looks over and sees her poking her stomach.
"Nothing..."
"What's wrong?"
*Sighs* "Okay, I wasn't gonna say anything, but I'm starting to worry."
"About what?"
"The baby should be moving and it's not."
"What are you saying?" Samuel asks.
"Well-"
"Mom, it's fine! Nothing's wrong! I mean, you're starting to show more, you're eating! The baby's fine!"
"It probably is.. After everything that we've been through, I guess I'm just on edge.. which isn't good, so then I worry about that and I'm just constantly worried about something!"
"Well why don't I take you to some of those 24 hour clinics, just to ease your mind."
"You don't mind?"
"Of course not! Sam, google the nearest one." James says.
***
As they drive to the clinic, the radio plays softly in the background.
"I've been a walking heartache
I've made a mess of me
The person that I've been lately
Ain't who I wanna be
But you stay here right beside me
Watch as the storm goes through
And I need you"
Jessica hears faintly.
"Listen!" She sits up and turns the volume up.
"Is that-"
"Daddy and I's wedding song!" She smiles.
"Aw!" She touches her chest and begins to cry softly.
"'Cause God gave me you for the ups and downs
God gave me you for the days of doubt
For when I think I've lost my way
There are no words here left to say, it's true
God gave me you, gave me you"
"Oh my gosh, this song...." Tears pour down her face.
James pulls over and the boys stay quiet as the music and her tears fill the car.
James rubs her arm and Jessica wipes her face.
"I miss him so much!"
"So do we, mom." Michael says as he and Sam sit up close to the front.
Suddenly out of nowhere Jessica feels the baby starting to kick hard.
"Oh my gosh!" She looks down and touches her stomach.
"What's wrong?" Sam asks.
"The baby!"
"What about it?!" Michael panics.
"It's moving!" She laughs.
"Really?!" They smile.
"Yeah! Oh my gosh, and big kicks too! Not just flutters!"
"I wanna feel!" James places his hand on her stomach.
"Whoa!"
"It's a strong little guy, huh?" She smiles and wipes the tears that were rolling down her cheeks.
"I wanna feel!" Michael reaches over.
"Whoa this is weird! That's a baby!"
"Hah! Yep! Wanna feel, Sam?"
"Yeah." He reaches over and smiles when he feels it.
Jessica takes a deep sigh of relief and smiles up to the sky.
"Thank you, Sam." She says in a loud whisper.
"James, do you think this is his birthday gift to us?" Sam looks at him.
"Heh! I think so.." James softly smiles at Jessica's bump.
"Oh my boys! It is! It's your father and little sibling's way of saying Happy Birthday!
*Smiles*
Isn't that right, baby?" She looks down and touches her stomach.
The baby kicks again and she chuckles with tears in her eyes.
