Chapter 21: Silent Thanks
Zane left PIXAL and Vania to finish bandaging Harumi's injuries while he went to ask Lloyd about what had happened inside the cloud. He walked towards the rest of the team who were treating Lloyd's injuries. Lloyd flinched and hit Kai's hand when he accidentally touched a badly injured part on his left arm, "Careful with that, Kai." He grunted and lifted his arm to his chest, trying to cease the pain, "I-It's still pretty bad." He bit his lip.
Kai backed up, "Oh, sorry. Didn't know, Big Shot." He frowned, not wanting to make Lloyd be in any more pain than he's already in.
Lloyd waved it off with his left arm but that turned out to be a mistake because as soon as he did, the pain shot up through his arm and he pulled his arm back down, groaning quietly at the pain. Skylor looked at him, "You know that it's okay to feel pain, right? You don't have to try and be quiet about it." She shrugged before going back to the injury she was working on, "It'll just hurt more."
"I know, I know. I'm just... trying to get over it. I've been in worse." He muttered while shaking his head. Skylor nodded in understanding, making him smile. He saw Zane coming over and called out to him, "Zane!"
He came over at the mention of his name. "Yes, Lloyd?"
"How's Rum-" He corrected himself, "Harumi? How's she doing? Will she recover?" He asked frantically.
"Slow down, Lloyd. And yes, she will recover soon. She's doing well. I'm not sure how but she's recovering from the oni magic very quickly." Zane explained, "It's almost as if..." He trailed off, trying to find the right words for it.
By now, everyone that was in earshot was listening to Zane's explanation. Zane was taking so long to think of the right words that Jay groaned, "Ugh, Zane... Almost as if what? Quit stalling." He frowned in annoyance, "Just get to it already! The suspense is killing me-!" He whined. Zane flattened his brows as in saying 'Are you kidding me?'.
Cole clamped his mouth shut and gave an innocent smile to Zane, "Just... Take your time." Zane smiled before hearing his next sentence, "But if you can, it would be better if you can hurry." He chuckled nervously and cleared his throat when he saw Zane's annoyed glare. "Pretend you didn't hear me say that." He gave a nervous smile.
Zane went back to thinking what to say when PIXAL intercepted the process, "The words Zane is looking for is 'As if something is protecting her, like magic'." She said with a smile while gesturing to them.
"Yes! That is correct, PIXAL." Zane smiled while nodding.
Lloyd raised a brow, "Okay. So it's like 'magic'." He quoted with the gestures.
PIXAL looked at him, "Did you just use quotation marks for the word... 'Magic'?" She asked him.
"Yes," He nodded, "Okay, back to the magic thing." He changed the subject, "It's like magic, but what kind of magic?" He questioned.
No one answered since no one knew what the answer was. They were all left to think about it, confused, when all of a sudden, something glowed gold. Everyone looked up from their thoughts and looked at the source. It was from Harumi. The glow came from her chest. Zane noticed something, "Fascinating..." He gaped before the light disappeared.
"What's fascinating?" Jay asked him.
"The glow." Zane answered plainly before adding more, "It seems to be healing her. Look." He pointed out before projecting the video of the glowing light coming from Harumi. He replayed it and pointed at her frozen limbs turning back to flesh. Everyone gasps.
Vania smiled in astonishment, "That's awesome!" She exclaimed, "Harumi will recover pretty quickly if Zane's theory is right." She cheered as she approached Harumi's figure.
"Well, true." Cole started while following Vania from behind, "But that's not really the confusion here." Vania stopped and Cole turned her around to face him as he chuckled amusingly.
"I'd prefer to think positive but... What's the confusion here?" She asked cluelessly.
Kai stepped up, "I think the confusion is how Harumi just glowed like that out of the red!" He specified with a small joke at the end. Skylor sighed in disappointment, making Kai look at her, "What?" He asked.
"You just had to make a joke at the end, Kai? Out of the red." She shook her head in disappointment, "Seriously?" She asked.
"Hah! That was a good one." Jay laughed. Skylor gave him a death stare and he shrunk back, "Not!" He added, chuckling nervously, "Not good at all, heh..."
Kai raised his hands up in defense, "It was a poor choice of words! I swear!" He commented.
"You shouldn't swear. It's a sign of weak verbal skill." Jay joked which got him a death stare from Skylor and Lloyd, "Nevermind..." He mumbled, looking away.
PIXAL decided to step in, "Okay. Look, everyone. I don't think we should be arguing and making jokes like this. Maybe instead of doing that, we should be asking Lloyd if he knew about this earlier." He pointed to the green-coded ninja who was slightly taken aback.
"Oh, yeah..." Kai breathed out, "Why didn't I think of that?" He asked no one in particular.
Jay answered in his ear, "Cause if so, then you're trying to challenge a walking computer." He snorted in amusement. Kai elbowed him on the side which made Jay stop laughing and it made Kai chuckle to himself in amusement.
Skylor gave both of the immature boys a smack on the back of their heads, "Will you two quit acting like immature boys and listen for just a second?" She whisper-asked harshly, but carefully.
"Yeah, yeah. Sorry." Kai rubbed the back of his head which was still lingering with slight pain. Jay nodded in agreement, giving a small smile while rubbing the back of his head too.
"Good." Skylor smiled before walking off to hear Lloyd's explanation.
Lloyd started, "I have to be honest, I did saw Harumi glowing back inside the cloud. It happened a couple of times but I didn't have much time to think about it back then. Now though, I do and I also need to tell you something crazy that happened in there." His eyes widened to add to the dramatic effect.
Skylor gestured her hands forward, "Go on." She said.
He nodded, "The Omega Oni showed up and I had to engage in combat. He quickly overwhelmed me and I probably would've been dead if it wasn't for Harumi." He smiled gratefully at the white-haired unconscious girl.
"What did she do?" Jay asked, getting curious and so were the others.
Lloyd looked back at his friends, "She jumped on the Omega and distracted him while being injured. But that's how she sprained her right foot. The Omega threw her off of him and she landed on her right foot, spraining it." He shook his head and blinked, "I just had to ignore the pain I felt and rush to her aid, she'd gone unconscious by then. After that, the Omega did something shocking."
"What? What did he do?" Kai asked, intrigued.
"That's the thing. He didn't do anything." Lloyd claimed, shocking the others.
Cole asked him, "Woah, woah, woah. You're saying that he had you both down and didn't attack?!" He was in shock. Lloyd nodded, making him say, "That's crazy." He added.
Lloyd agreed, "I know. And instead of attacking, he told me something. Something that caught my attention. I haven't heard of one of these in a long time." He admitted.
"Well," Jay started, "Spill!" He exclaimed.
"He told me a prophecy." Lloyd simplified.
Zane quirked a brow, as did PIXAL. "A prophecy? What prophecy?" Zane asked.
Lloyd shook his head, "I don't actually know what the prophecy is called, but I do know what it's about. The Omega told me that only the 'Golden Child' will have the power to defeat the 'Greater Darkness'. Apparently, he also said that the oni were just a messenger, so I don't think that the oni are the 'Greater Darkness'." Lloyd elucidated.
"The Golden Child? The Greater Darkness?" Skylor asked and Lloyd nodded, "What does that mean? Who do you think they are?" She asked again.
Lloyd gestured that he didn't know, "I don't know. But for now, I'm guessing that... Uhm..." He trailed off, looking away.
Zane looked down, analyzing the prophecy before shaking his head, "I have no knowledge of this prophecy. I have never even heard of something about the Golden Child nor the Greater Darkness." He affirmed, "But if the Greater Darkness isn't here yet, I would guess that the Golden Child isn't here yet either." He said his guess.
Lloyd rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly, "Well, this is awkward." He spat out randomly.
"Why?" Vania asked.
"I was having thoughts about the Golden Child. I gave a guess that Harumi might be the Golden Child because of the glowing thing that's been happening." He smiled.
PIXAL gave a quick research about it and shook her head, "I have never seen any type of activity like what had happened to Harumi so your assumption may be correct. But again, we have no proof, it could still be any of us. For now, though, we'll just be careful about it." She nodded.
"Okay." Lloyd replied.
An hour or two passed and Harumi's chest gave a few more glows while the time passed. She didn't wake up until the abnormal magic fully healed her from the oni cloud's poisoning, then she woke up. She gave out a small gasp as she rose up from her sleeping position. Everyone looked at her in shock. "What happened? How did I get here?" She asked in confusion.
She got startled when Lloyd jumped at her and hugged her. Lloyd noticed her shock and soon discovered his own before he let go of her, smiling nervously. He took a step back, and another, and another, and another. Harumi smiled after her shock faded away, tucking a loose strand of her behind her ear. Silence fell down on the two former enemies, both trying to decide on what to say. The main question the two of them had was... Should I forgive him? Or, should I forgive her? That was the question that remained between the two of them.
They almost forgot that the others were still watching them. They didn't want to see their reactions so they just looked away. The others that were watching the scene had mixed feelings about them. They were happy that the two were finally getting on better terms with each other, but they were still skeptical if Harumi could be trusted. Even though Harumi had saved them on a couple of occasions, they still needed bigger proof to trust her, because the last time they teamed up with her, she saved Lloyd because she needed him to get the Oni Mask. They needed to be cautious in case she needed them for something else this time.
For all they know, she could've been the one to release the oni. Yes, she let the oni grab her into the cloud on purpose to relieve them of their stress from her but maybe she knew that Lloyd would save her. What happens if that was just to gain their trust? But then again, she saved Lloyd's life. But maybe she needed him for something? Wasn't she just trying to get in their circle of trust for her own gain? That's what she always does, wasn't it?
The Ninja, especially Lloyd, had the biggest impact from her due to letting her in their circle of trust one time. Skylor and PIXAL were both in the Resistance against the Sons of Garmadon, but both of them weren't close to Harumi, they didn't know her like the Ninja do. Vania has never actually gotten to know Harumi at all, they met at a royal meeting between the Royal Family of Ninjago City and the Royal Family of the Ivory City of Shintaro, but Harumi was still wearing her mask at the time and she didn't really get to know Vania much, so Vania didn't really have an impact from her at all.
The Ninja's expressions were a mix between smirks and hesitance. Skylor and PIXAL's were a mix between happy and smug. Vania's was just pure joy for the two people. Lloyd still didn't know how to approach her on this so he kept quiet. Harumi, after a few more minutes of silence, cleared her throat and stood up. She flinched at a pain shooting up her leg and wobbled but luckily, Lloyd caught her before she could fall. Harumi felt her face heat up but she quickly thanked him awkwardly. Lloyd also felt his cheeks go red and let go of his hold on her as he gave his welcome.
Harumi tried standing up herself but fell again. Lloyd caught her but this time he let her use him as a support. She gave him a thankful look and looked down to see where the pain was coming from, her eyes widened in horror.
Lloyd decided to ask, "What was the last thing you remember?" His eyes were blank, no emotion showing.
"Last thing I remember was... Getting dragged into the cloud. Everything that happened in there is all a blur." She mumbled, rubbing circles around her temples with her fingers. She looked down, "What happened to my foot?" She voiced, more surprised than scared.
Everyone gave each other a nervous look, not really knowing what to say. Lloyd gave a circular gesture with his hand to his friends, signaling them to huddle up. They complied. Lloyd looked at Harumi with a soft expression rather than a glare before he carefully helped Harumi sit down on the soft grass, "Wait right here." He spoke before leaving to the huddle, she nodded with a grateful smile.
"You think we should tell her about what happened?" Kai asked, fiddling with his hands.
"Mmm, I don't think it's a good idea. What if she doesn't take it well?" Jay gave his opinion, rubbing up and down his left arm with his right hand.
Zane shook his head, "Keeping this from her wouldn't be a wise choice either, Jay." He frowned.
"Yeah but neither is telling her about everything that happened in there. It could shock her." Cole argued, backing up Jay's opinions.
"Ah," PIXAL groaned, pinching the bridge of her nose, "This isn't helping. Telling her won't help but neither is keeping this from her. Arguing about this is just making things harder." She glared at the four boys.
Vania fidgeted with her hands while having an uncertain look on her face, "This doesn't seem right, keeping something that's related to her. I feel like telling her is the best option we have." She said what she thought from her point of view.
"No. Not telling her is the best option we have." Jay argued back, slamming his right hand in his left one.
Skylor decided to jump in, "PIXAL's said this already. Arguing won't help us." She recited carefully, "Look, we need to decide on something. We can't waste a lot of time thinking about this. We still have other things we need to take care of. Such as the oni who are still taking over, the prophecy is also something we have to figure out, and we're supposed to be leaving to retrieve the Pearl of Reversal." She added, trying to stop the arguing.
"She's right." A new voice chimed in. Everyone turned to the source of it, Lloyd. "We still have other matters to attend to. I feel that it won't be smart to keep this from her. We should just tell her and then be on our way to the Pearl. It'll save us from guilt and we'll get to leave sooner rather than later." He summarized what he thought was best while keeping a straight face.
"You can't just jump into things like this Lloyd. I think that this is worth discussing before we actually decide on what to do." Kai glowered, his hands clenching into a fist, "This is Harumi we're talking about. Who knows what she'll do." He frowned.
Everyone started arguing and saying their own opinions, with the exception of Skylor, Vania, PIXAL, Zane, and Lloyd. Zane managed to crawl his way into the conversation to try and stop the argument. "Listen, brothers. I think that it would be best not to keep this information from her. How would you feel if something important about you was kept from you? And might I remind you that we are trying to gain her trust as well as she is trying to earn ours? What good will it do if we keep this important piece of information from her? It will just divide us even more." He clarified.
Kai, Jay, and Cole bit their lip and apologized for the childishness. Zane nodded, thankful that they finally came to their senses. Lloyd decided to take charge again, "So here's what we'll do. First, we explain to Harumi about that little... Accident. Then we'll be off to the Endless Sea and hopefully, we'll be able to find the Pearl before sundown. Understand?" They nodded in confirmation, "Good." That was the last thing Lloyd said before walking towards Harumi.
She saw him and smiled, "What did you guys decide? Are you going to tell me what happened?" She asked, eager to know their decision.
"We decided that we will tell you what happened. Hopefully, it won't have any effect on you." He sighed, closing his eyes as he crouched down to her level.
Harumi placed a hand on his shoulder which caused him to open his eyes, "I won't. Just tell me." She nodded, giving Lloyd some more confidence, "I trust you." Those words came out of her mouth as she smiled.
Lloyd was dumbfounded by this new knowledge. He had his mouth agape, "She trusts me? How? Why?" He asked himself in his thoughts. He was snapped back to reality when he saw Harumi waving her hand in front of him.
"I'm sorry." Harumi started while backing away slightly, "That was probably too early to admit." She frowned before she was about to attempt standing up on her own. Lloyd grabbed her hand before she could though.
He was speechless, not knowing what to say. Harumi gave him a questioning look. "No, no. It's fine. You just- It was just- Um... I was going to tell you what happened." He took a deep breath after changing the subject. Harumi didn't seem bothered by it and complied, wanting to know what happened. He explained and the further he got into the explanation, the more in shock Harumi seemed to be. She looked to be the most shocked when Lloyd explained to her about the prophecy, though he didn't tell her about his theory of her being the Golden Child. Other than that, her memory seemed to jog up after he had finished the explanation. She was shaking her head while one of her hands was up in front of her mouth.
She decided to sigh as she closed her eyes, "Sorry." Was the only thing that came out of her mouth before she opened her eyes again. "I was trying to do something good. To prove that I've changed. I feel like that was more of a stupid thing to do, rather than a good one." She groaned, "I'm so stupid." She muttered, but Lloyd heard it.
"You aren't. Actually, I'm flattered that you did that for us, considering after everything that happened between us." His anxiety seemed to come back after saying that, "Are we still not good on terms about that yet?" He asked quietly so that the rest couldn't hear.
Harumi looked down as she thought about it. She wanted to forgive him but deep down, she knew that she hasn't forgiven him just yet. "No, we're not." She said the honest truth, "I wish we were but... It's a lot easier to say that I've forgiven you than actually meaning that I do." She shook her head, "We should go now. We're wasting daylight." She muttered.
Lloyd nodded and helped her up, letting her lean on him, "Yeah. Let's go." He turned to the other, "We're going now. Come on, guys." He commanded before they started walking again.
About 10 to 20 minutes of walking, and Skylor decided to whisper to the others. They were in front of Lloyd and Harumi so they had to be quiet. "Tensions are high again. Maybe telling Harumi wasn't a good idea." She conceived, frowning while shaking her head.
Kai sensed her stress and placed an arm around her, pulling them closer together. "You shouldn't stress about it. Harumi and Lloyd both have had rough pasts. They'll warm up to each other eventually, but I'm still not sure if we could trust her." He uttered out, trying to relax his own mind.
"Kai. She just sacrificed herself for us. Isn't that enough proof that she's changed? You're giving her a hard time." Skylor gave him a light shove while she tried to change his mind about Harumi.
Zane was in front of Skylor with PIXAL, "You can't exactly blame Kai, Skylor. Lloyd is practically his brother. When Harumi broke Lloyd's heart, it affected us all but it affected Kai a lot more than it did to us, considering that Kai and Lloyd are the closest out of all of us." He explained Kai and Lloyd's relationship, hoping that Skylor would understand how Kai feels.
"I know that," Skylor started whilst nodding, "I just feel like it's unnecessary for Kai to give Harumi such a hard time. I'm his girlfriend. Of course, I know how he feels. I know it's hard for him to give Harumi another chance, but giving a hard time to Harumi will just make everything harder than it already is." She clarified, keeping her hand on Kai's shoulder.
PIXAL turned her head towards Skylor, "I understand, you make a logical point. Staying mad at Harumi will just risk the oni's victory over us. It would be best to listen to Skylor's advice. Start slow with her, perhaps doing so will make her warm up to you as well." She smiled.
Kai was unsure of the advice given to him but he gave them a determined smile, "I'll try my best." He stated, giving Harumi a brief glance before returning his attention to Skylor who smiled at him.
"Thank you." She whispered, resting her head on his shoulder. Kai nodded back at her as in saying 'You're welcome'.
Harumi and Lloyd were definitely on awkward terms. Lloyd wanted to thank her personally for saving his life, but was unsure on how to start. Harumi, on the other hand, was trying to think of a way to not make this awkward. Lloyd decided to speak up first, to say his thanks.
"Harumi?" He started, using his free hand to stroke his chin.
Harumi turned to him at the mention of her name, "Yes?" She replied with that sweet and deceiving voice of hers. Sweet like an angel, but dangerously deceiving. Lloyd couldn't tell if it was fake or not.
"I just wanted to say thank you." He smiled, pushing aside all negative thoughts about her.
She seemed confused. She raised a brow, "Why?" She asked, her mouth slightly agape.
Lloyd chuckled lightly and placed his free hand under her chin to close her mouth. "For saving my life back there. If it weren't for you, I would probably not even exist right now. So... Thanks." He gave a heartwarming smile that could sway any girl, but Harumi was no ordinary girl. While other girls would melt at the sight of him, she wouldn't. The reason Harumi fell for him was because of his personality. He was kind, generous, caring, loving, and lots more. She hopes that she could reconcile with him one day. But today was probably not that day.
She looked down with a shy smile, "No problem. I didn't want you to die because of me." She choked when she said the word 'die'. "I don't want to see another person suffer because of me. That's the whole reason I did it in the first place. But I think you know because of the note I gave you." She admitted before meeting his green eyes.
"Yeah, but... It feels better to be hearing it from you. So that I know you really were the one who wrote that." He said with affection, something Harumi hasn't gotten in a really long time.
Harumi held herself from gaping and decided to just look away. "I guess I need to thank you too." She looked back at him with the same affection he gave her.
"What for?" He asked, confused while quirking a brow.
She took a breath before meeting his gaze again, "For coming to save me. It was unnecessary. No one asked you to do it but you still did. I'm happy to know that someone cared for me enough to do that." She stopped to take a breather, "And I just got to say... Thank you, Lloyd." She smiled at him affectionately.
Lloyd was surprised by this. He smiled back with just as much affection, "You're welcome. It was nothing, really. It's my job as the Green Ninja. I couldn't just let you succumb to darkness when I had the chance to save you. Especially not after what I had let you go through. I'm sorry for that but I know you still haven't forgiven me." He frowned at that thought and looked away.
Harumi kept herself composed, "No, I haven't." That comment just made Lloyd's frown deepen. "But... In time, I might forgive you. If you can forgive me, which I know you still haven't either." She chuckled weakly.
Lloyd looked back with a weak smile, "True. I can't blame you for your decision. It must be hard for you to have your parents killed by your own idol. I can't imagine what must have been going through your head." He sighed before looking at her again, "I'll try my best to be civil towards you. It's just hard." He knocked a fist on his head a couple of times.
Harumi placed a hand on his fist and lowered it, Lloyd stared at their hands the whole time. "I know. I'll try to be more civil to you too. And it was hard for me to lose my parents that way. But I can't change what happened, I can only try and make my future better. Starting by not fighting with each other constantly." She laughed.
He laughed along and nodded, "Yeah. I'd like that." He agreed but stopped laughing when he saw Harumi holding out her right hand.
"How 'bout we start smaller than friends for now, like... Temporary allies?" She asked, still holding her hand out with a hopeful smile.
Lloyd stared at her hand as she bit her lip. He eventually reached his left hand and shook hers. "Temporary allies... Yeah, I'm good with that." He agreed with a smile.
Harumi smiled back, "Good." She nodded.
This reconciliation was starting slowly and steadily. They don't want to rush things with each other, especially after their pasts with each other. Keeping it slow will reduce the chance of another argument breaking out between them. They may be only 'temporary allies' for now. But the future wasn't set in stone just yet. Their adventure is far from the ending. This was just the beginning.
The beginning of the restoration of their relationship.
The beginning of a new war.
The beginning of the prophecy.
The beginning of a new adventure.
For this was just the start of worse and better things to come.
