Chapter 1: Mourning
Just another day in Ninjago City. It was a cloudy day in the city and yet, everyone still walked happily down the streets without a care in the world. It's been a year since Nya merged with the sea. She became one with the entire ocean and had disappeared to who knows where. Everyone had gotten over losing their beloved Water Ninja. She had made such a huge sacrifice for everyone in Ninjago, but it's been a year and everyone has gotten over her.
...Well, everyone, except Jay.
The Lightning Ninja, Master of Lightning; Nya's Yin, a.k.a love interest.
It did make sense that he would still be mourning over the loss of his Yang; who wouldn't be upset over losing their beloved. Nya was his everything and in just a snap, she was gone. Every time Jay came across something involving Nya - water, the ocean, Water Ninja memorials, etc - he would remember all the pleasant memories of her which gave him have an emotional breakdown every time.
Grey clouds moved slowly in the skies, signaling that it was about to rain.
Rain; that was water.
For most people in Ninjago, that meant that they had to find shelter to avoid getting soaked by the rain. But for the Master of Lightning, it meant another reason to mourn over his former girlfriend.
Currently, Jay was sitting on a couch in the Monastery's relaxation room. He was looking at a picture of him and Nya; it was taken after they had defeated Lord Garmadon. He gave a sad smile at the memory and sighed, "I miss you, Nya... I wish you were still here."
"Still mourning over, Nya?" A new voice chimed in and it caused Jay to jump out of his seat. He looked to the source of the sound and saw Lloyd smiling. The Green Ninja was leaning on the wall beside the doorframe and he had a small smirk on his relaxed face.
Jay sighed yet again, "You can't blame me, can you?" He sat back down on the couch and lifted the picture of him and Nya again, "She was my Yang, and I was her Yin..." He explained sadly.
Lloyd walked towards the saddened Lightning Elemental before he sat on the couch beside him, "I guess I can't blame you... But still, it's been a year. You've got to get over her eventually," When Jay didn't respond, Lloyd sighed and tried to explain, "Look, I know it's hard for you because she was your everything, Jay, but she isn't coming back-"
"She's still alive, Lloyd!" Jay snapped, cutting him off. Lloyd looked a bit surprised by his sudden outburst but understood either way why he got mad. Seeing the mixed look of fear and surprise on Lloyd's face, he groaned, "Sorry, it's just that talking about Nya... It just- You know, gets to me. It's very hard to just let her go when I still love her. And knowing that she's still out there somewhere, it doesn't help at all with letting her go."
Lloyd let out a breath and smiled at his friend, "It's alright, Jay. If anything, I should be the one apologizing. I might've gone a bit too far with the whole 'she isn't coming back' thing. Sorry," Both of them shared a good laugh before Lloyd added, "And if anyone knows what you're going through right now, It's me," He frowned.
"How would you know what it's like to lose someone you love romantically?" Jay asked. Lloyd cocked a brow and a look of realization flashed across Jay's face, "Ohh. Right, Harumi. Sorry about her, pal," Lloyd looked at the floor in sorrow at the mention of his former lover's name, "I know she was something special to you. And I'm pretty sure you two would've made a great couple if she were still here."
Lloyd nodded, smiling miserably. He reached into his pocket and took out a picture of him and Harumi. It was that one time when they were on the Destiny's Bounty together, holding hands.
He gave a genuine smile at the happy but deceitful memory, "I miss her," He admitted the obvious out of the blue.
"I miss Nya, too," He then rubbed his neck awkwardly, "I guess now I know how you felt when you lost Harumi," He laughed timidly.
Jay's laugh was infectious and he caused Lloyd to laugh lightly, "Yeah, I guess so," After he said that, the room fell in silence. Both of the boys were quiet, not one of them knowing what else to talk about.
The silence in the room lasted for a few more minutes before Lloyd decided to speak up, "Do you remember the time when I jumped off of the ship recklessly to save Harumi from the Samurai X suit?" He brought up the memory.
"Hehe, yeah. You were so desperate to save her that you just jumped off without even thinking about the consequences," He laughed, "Do you remember Nadakhan?" Lloyd's face twisted into confusion but since he was trying to help Jay get through his mourning state, he nodded with a fake smile, "I almost lost Nya, but it was also what brought us together..." He sighed, "I miss those times."
Ignoring his current confusion about Nadakhan, he replied, "Yeah. I think all of us has experienced a somewhat tragic love story," Lloyd said sadly, "Harumi stole my heart, and she died with it... You and Nya have each others' hearts, and Nya had to leave with your heart..."
Jay nodded, "Kai loved Skylor, but he found out she was Chen's daughter. But at least, in the end, they got together. PIXAL almost lost Zane but thankfully, he was still alive... And Cole and Vania, her dad was evil and they had to separate ways..." He sighed, "Like Nya once said, 'The greatest love stories do always end in tragedy'."
"I don't recall Nya ever saying that but, yeah, it is true..." Lloyd agreed. Another wave of silence fell upon them before the Master of Energy broke it again, "Do you know where the other guys are at?"
Jay's head shot up at the sudden change of topic, "Oh, y-yeah. Kai's on a date with Skylor; he said he had a surprise ready for her. Zane and PIXAL are at Borg Tower; probably another helping-Cyrus-Borg date," He joked, getting a laugh out of Lloyd, "And Cole is visiting Queen Vania, again. I think that's the third time this month."
"They must be really happy together."
"Oh, you don't even know it, Lloyd. Cole's been telling me every single detail of their date every time he came back from Shintaro," Jay sighed, again, "Makes me wonder what I'd be doing with Nya if she was still here right now.
"Heh. I wish Rumi was still here..." Lloyd said all of a sudden.
Even though Jay knew that Lloyd still loved Harumi with all his heart, it still confused him as to why Lloyd wished that the psycho ex-princess of Ninjago was still alive.
"Why? Didn't she try to kill you back at the Oni Temple?" Jay questioned, "And doesn't she still hate you and what not?"
Lloyd flinched at Jay's comment about how Harumi thought of him back when she was alive, "I mean, like, yes, but if she were still here, I know I could've shown her the light. I could've made her see things in a better way. She isn't evil, she's just misguided by grief."
"Yeah, but still... If she were still here, wouldn't she still try to come after you? After all, she does blame you for her parents' death," He replied, pushing Lloyd's heart further.
Lloyd mumbled something under his breath that Jay couldn't hear but the Master of Lightning did notice Lloyd's mouth move. So, he asked, "Did you say something, Lloyd?"
"I could've at least saved her from experiencing the same death as her parents. Her parents died from the building collapsing, and she died the same way. She doesn't deserve the pain that she has been through," Lloyd proceeded to blame himself, "It's all my fault."
"Lloyd, none of this is your fault-"
"Yes, it is!" He cut Jay off, massaging his temple with his fingers, "If I hadn't released Pythor and the rest of the serpentine - who ended up releasing the Great Devourer, Harumi would still have her parents and she would still be alive!" Lloyd cried out in anger towards himself.
Out of nowhere, Jay swiftly grabbed Lloyd's shoulders and made the young leader of the Ninja face him, "No! Now, you listen to me, Lloyd. If you hadn't have released the serpentine, you never would've met Harumi. And to add on, if it wasn't for you, none of us would've found out true potential and become the Ninja," Jay said, every word coming out of his mouth being the truth, "Like Master Wu once said, 'Everything happens for a reason'. So, why can't you understand that all of the things that has happened to you is part of your destiny?"
"I guess that's true," His face went soft for a second before he shook his head, his face turning bitter again, "But I still wish I could've saved Harumi instead of just watching her die from the sidelines," Lloyd spoke the truth out loud.
The Lightning Elemental sighed, giving up in trying to convince Lloyd that none of the bad things that has happened was his fault. Jay let go of Lloyd's shoulders and sat back down on the couch, keeping one hand on the Green Ninja's shoulder.
"Maybe you could've done something, maybe you couldn't have. The past is the past and the future is the future. Some day, you'll find happiness again, Lloyd; whether it's in love or not," Jay comforted his little brother figure.
Lloyd smiled sincerely, thanking the joker Lightning Ninja, "Thanks, Jay."
Jay patted Lloyd's back while returning the smile, "No problem. Well, I'm gonna go train now. I'll see you later?"
"Yeah. See you," Lloyd waved as his brother figure left the room to go train in the courtyard.
Meanwhile, Lloyd just sat still on the couch of the relaxation room, staring at the single-lit candle that was left on the middle of the coffee table. No matter how much he scolded himself, he couldn't pry his mind off of the girl who stole his heart. All he could think about was Harumi. As much as people tell him that it wasn't his fault, he can't help but argue that it was his fault.
He always thought to himself that he could've done something to help Harumi. Not just help her by saving her from dying but... help her out of her grief, help her out of her misguidance, help her find happiness, help her find the way. He thought that he could've tried harder to help her. He always felt guilty because he didn't do any of that.
The masks that Harumi wore hid her true feelings all too well. The girl he fell for had a heart as cold as ice when without her masks. If he had known about her true past and how she truly felt about him, he would've thought of ways on how to make it up to her. But now, it was too late. She was in the Departed Realm now.
He must've been really lost in thought about Harumi since he didn't snap out of it until the tv screen lit up with a distress call from the police Commissioner. At the possibility of a new danger, he instantly got up to answer the call. He ran to the dartboard, slid it open, and clicked the button that was hidden behind it. The tv fireplace opened the way to the elevator and he scanned his hand over the scanner, bringing him down to the hangar bay.
As soon as the elevator arrived and the doors opened, Lloyd dashed towards the gigantic screen. He clicked a few buttons, flipped a switch, and the distress call was answered.
"Commissioner, come in. This is Lloyd Garmadon answering. What seems to be the trouble today?"
A buzzing sound was heard before the Commissioner was able to reply, "Green Ninja, some of my men have claimed to have seen a mysterious person break into the Palace of Secrets."
This new information made Lloyd confused, "Why would anyone want to break into the Palace? It's empty, no one lives there anymore," He stopped for a brief second to think, "Not since what happened to the Royal Family, and Harumi..." He thought.
"We're not sure as to why this person broke into the palace, but there are still some relics in the palace that belonged to the royal family and we think that is why the person broke in," He explained.
"To steal the relics?" Lloyd asked, just to be sure that he heard the Commissioner correctly.
"Indeed," The Commissioner confirmed.
Lloyd went quiet for a second before he replied, "I'm on my way. I'll get the culprit and try to get some answers."
"Thank you, Green Ninja," He thanked.
Lloyd flipped his hood on before flicking another switch, "Just doing my job." Then he logged out, going offline in the call.
He turned to look behind him and saw his cycle being set up by the computer. He ran towards it just as its engine roared, signaling that it was ready for use. Jumping on it, he set a course for the Palace of Secrets and drove off.
