19. Suspicion
Percy
I hurled one of my daggers at the wall facing me. The dagger struck the wall and remained imbedded in it. I threw the other dagger, and watched as sunk hilt-deep into the wall.
"Why are you taking your anger out on the poor wall?" An amused voice asked. I exhaled loudly before raising my hands. Both daggers flew out of the wall and into my hands.
I turned to see Zoe standing behind me with her arms crossed against her chest. She had tied her long, silky black hair into a ponytail, and her eyes sparkled warmly.
"I haven't heard about anything else from my spies about my cousin." I said as I sheathed my daggers. "And it's driving me mad. I haven't had a proper, fun fight in ages."
Zoe snorted as she eyed the scarred wall behind me. "Trust me my love, you'll get the fight that you want soon enough. Nico is probably just training with the Gods and Goddesses he'd rescued from Tartarus. Then strike when we're least expecting it."
I cracked my neck and shrugged in response. "I suppose. It'll be fun to crush their hopes and dreams again when they try to storm my palace."
Zoe let a soft sigh escape her lips before walking closer to me. She wrapped her arms around me and put her head against my chest. I didn't react to that, because my Queen had repeated that action so many times in the past.
"Crush them all like the tiny bugs they are." Zoe whispered into my chest. I chuckled and placed a hand on top of her head.
"Of course."
Phoebe
I standing in the archery range outside of the castle. Perseus had set up a shooting range not long after he had taken the throne. I was thankful for that, and I now spend a lot of time outdoors.
I slung my bow off of my shoulder and pulled an arrow out of the quiver resting by my feet. I slid the arrow onto the string and raised the bow, aiming it at the target. I was about to shoot it when a felt a hand on my shoulder.
I whirled around, aiming the bow at the person who touched me until I saw Perseus standing behind me. "Whoa there, be careful with that." The King of Olympus said lightly.
I paused before lowering the bow. I bowed slightly towards the tall, raven haired male with a small smile. "Hello, Lord."
Perseus removed his hand from my shoulder before stepping back with a nod of acknowledgement. "Hello Phoebe. Mind if I join you out here for a bit?"
I honestly didn't really feel like letting him join me, but I obviously couldn't say that to him. Even though he asked that as a question, I could tell he was expecting me to say yes either way.
"Yes, of course." I said, turning back to face the targets. I lifted my bow again, and released the arrow. It impaled the centre of the target in a clean bulls-eye.
"Still a hunter at heart, aren't you?" Perseus mused. I glanced at him and saw the former son of Poseidon sitting on a pillar near the archery range, twirling a dagger between his fingers.
"Possibly." I said shortly as I shouldered my bow again. I suddenly wanted to be as far away from the raven haired boy as possible.
"Uh, excuse me my Lord. I'm going to go back to the castle. Is that alright with you?" I asked. Perseus raised his head to look at me, narrowing his eyes slightly. He stopped twirling the knife and slid it back into the sheath strapped to his waist.
He didn't say anything for a moment before waving his hand in a dismissive gesture. "Go ahead."
I bowed again before walking off towards the giant castle. But as I reached the front doors, I turned and headed off to walk through the gardens surrounding Olympus. I had no intention of returning just yet.
As I walked through the luscious green flowerbeds, I took the time to think about everything that had happened so far.
Did I make the right decision of accepting to be a spy for Perseus? Sure, he brought me back to life, but I was living peacefully in Elysium. I had everything I wanted there, the perfect afterlife.
I don't know what tempted me to join Perseus.
Flashback
I was sitting on one of the benches facing the many houses in Elysium. I watched as little kids laughed and played together in little groups. Dashing through the streets, jumping over flowerbeds.
I sighed as I laced my fingers together. Elysium was perfect. the paradise where everyone wanted to go to when they died. But why was I so unhappy?
I knew why, though. It was because I missed being alive. I missed being able to feel the sunshine on my skin, feel rain dropping onto my clothes.
As a ghost, I wasn't able to feel any of that.
And I hated it.
I was too busy thinking to realize that a hooded figure stood beside me, waiting patiently until I finally noticed him. When I did, I jumped to my feet and reached behind my back for my bow, but then remembered that I was a spirit.
I gritted my teeth in frustration and the hooded figure chuckled. "Disappointing, isn't it? To realize that you're dead, and going to stay that way for god knows how long?"
My eye twitched and I wanted to punch him. But sadly, what the man said was right. I couldn't touch him.
Because I'm dead.
"Who are you?" I demanded. "And how are you here? You're clearly not dead, so what is your purpose?"
"Quick to the point. I like that." The man said before he reached up and pulled down his hood. I stared in shock at who was standing in front of me.
Messy raven black hair. Piercing sea green eyes.
The person standing in front of me was no other than Perseus Jackson, son of Poseidon.
"You-What are you doing here? How.......What?" I stuttered, completely flabbergasted at Perseus's sudden appearance.
He smirked at me before walking over to the bench and sitting down. He glanced up at me, clearly waiting for me to take a seat as well. I stared at him for a little bit longer before sitting down next to him.
"The Olympians have betrayed me. My friends have all left me. Annabeth, she deserted me. So I decided to leave, take matters into my own hands. The Primordials themselves visited me and blessed me, so now I have primordial power running through my very veins." Percy paused for a moment, sneaking a look at me.
I guess I gave him the reaction he knew I was going to give him after he told me what happened, because he laughed before continuing his story.
"I taught myself on how to properly use the powers the Primordials gave me. I trained for five years before returning to Olympus to pay them a little visit. I declared war on them. During those five years, I also gathered an army. An army full of demigods and demi-titans loyal to me. I trained them as well, taught them on how to use their powers and their skills. I brought people back from the dead to give them a second chance as well. Then, when the time was right, I attacked Olympus. I killed most of the Gods and Goddesses, leaving a select few alive for them to receive a special punishment. I took the throne from Zeus, so now, I'm the King of Olympus."
Percy stopped again before leaning back against the bench, looking at me right in the eyes. My mouth was open and my eyes were wide after everything he had told me so far.
I found my voice after a couple more seconds.
"You...So you're telling me that you've gained enough power to defeat all of the Olympians? How.........Why are here then? If you're the King, what business do you have with me? An ex-hunter?" I demanded.
Perseus closed his eyes briefly before opening them again. "I'm here to offer you what I had offered to many others before. A second chance in life. I know you aren't happy here, Phoebe. I know you want to be alive again. I can give that to you."
I narrowed my eyes suspiciously at him. He merely raised an eyebrow, the smirk returning to his face.
"Why are you giving me that? There's many others-I'm sure you know more people in Elysium besides me. Why are you not offering them a second chance?"
Perseus exhaled slowly, crossing his arms across his chest. "You ask way too many questions. Fine. I'm offering you a second chance because there's someone you were extremely close with who I also brought back to life. I'm sure the two of you would love to have a nice, long chat."
"There has to be more than that." I said stubbornly. "If I accept, then what? What do I do?"
Perseus reached up and ran a hand through his messy black hair. He smiled at me, a genuine smile that relaxed me slightly. "You will be given a special job. You're going to be my spy. Some demigods had escaped and are building an army of their own to oppose me. I want you to spy on them for me. I know you'll be perfect for the job, being an amazing hunter."
I blinked at him before looking down at my hands. I thought about my options carefully.
I could turn down Perseus's offer and stay here in Elysium forever. Or, I could accept, meet the person Perseus was talking about, and become a spy for him.
And I would be back. I would be alive again.
I thought about it for a couple more minutes before I made my choice. I looked back up at the son of Poseidon, and said the two words that changed my life from there.
"I accept."
Flashback ends
I still remembered that day. I didn't regret my decision back then, but now, I wasn't too sure. I've seen all the horrible things Perseus had been doing.
Torturing his ex-girlfriend everyday. Beating up a defenceless Roman everyday. Forcing Zeus to hold the sky everyday. Turning his father into a slave. Turing my father and Hestia into slaves.
I bit my lip before looking up at a beautiful golden fountain towering over me. I reached out and touched the water, watching it cascade over my skin.
I wanted to feel it. I wanted to feel raindrops splashing onto my clothes.
But now, I'm not sure if it was worth it.
