Chapter 4: The Book and The Roommate

(Back to Rebekah's Point of View)

I grabbed the book which was heavier than it looked. I blew off the dust and put it onto my bed. The front cover had a crest on it that was etched in gold. Opening the book, I was greeted by the words, Immortal Beings, flipping to the first actual page, I saw weird creatures.

I starting reading:

Pixie

Often mischievous, known for pranking other students.

Fairy

Coming in all different heights and widths. Can be mistaken for a pixie. Fairies have bigger and more colorful wings than pixies.

The doorknob started rattling. I hurried and put the book back under my bed. Another girl wearing an identical uniform to me came in. She had layered brown hair that was quite short, and hazel eyes. She looked at me and smiled, revealing braces.

"Hi! I'm Victoria. And-" she paused and held her nose with her right hand, "what's that smell?"

      "I don't smell anything," I said, and I honestly didn't smell anything.

I heard Victoria whisper, "Smells of mortal."

      "What?" I asked.

"Oh, nothing. So, you haven't told me your name," she said, and she put her hand that was holding her nose to her side.

"I'm Rebekah. So, is it just me or are people at this school acting weird?" I asked, there's no harm in asking.

"Well, that's eighth grade for ya. This school is a bit weird, everyone gets taught the same thing, no matter whether you're in ninth, eighth, or seventh."

"So, when does first period start? I have Mrs. Manning."

"I have that class first period too. It starts in half an hour," Victoria paused, "have you had breakfast yet?"

"I could use some food," I said.

"Follow me," Victoria said, starting to walk out of the room.

"Okay," I got up and followed. Again we went through many twists and turns. This time though, we went up five flights of stairs. We came out onto the roof. In the middle of the roof was the bell/clock tower.

"Whoa! Can't someone just fall off the roof?" I asked.

"No, the roof is surrounded by bulletproof, transparent glass. Breakfast is over here," Victoria walked over to a machine, "What are you, Rebekah?"

"I don't know, the principal asked me that earlier," I said.

"Okay, I'll just do it based off of the rumor."

The machine looked like one of those high tech soda machines. Instead of soda names, it was written in a weird language that didn't use the English alphabet. It didn't look Chinese or Japanese, more of like a code. Victoria press a button and grabbed one of the plates right next to the machine and put it into the machine. Then, the plate came out the side with food on it. It was mushy red.

"Come, you can sit at my table," she said. She walked over to a blue table right next to the edge of the roof. There were a few other people there. David, a girl I had never seen before, and the boy who went to the tour. The girl had pale skin with light brown hair, she was taller than me. The boy had bad acne and red-brown curly hair. He wasn't chubby, but wasn't super skinny either, the dude kept giving me weird looks.

The David and girl both had what looked like a red smoothie, strawberry smoothie, maybe? The boy was eating the same red mush as me. Victoria held a potion looking thing in her hand, where did it come from? Maybe she already had it before she made my plate. I sat down.

"So, this is Rebekah, say hi." Victoria said enthusiastically.

"Hi," I said weakly.

"That's David," she pointed to David, "that's Beatrice, we call her Bea," the girl smiled, "and that's the new kid, Zachary."

Beatrice had brown hair that went a little past her shoulders. It was in a half up, half down style. Her eyes were brown. She was wearing the girl's uniform.

"'Sup," Zachary said.

"Good to see you again, Bekah," David smiled.

"Hello!" Bea said.

"So, Zachary, is this stuff any good?" I asked, pointing to my plate.

"It's pretty good, although horse is better," Zachary said, nothing on his face showed he was kidding.

I looked at the food on my plate, it looked like some kind of food you'd see in jail. I picked up my fork, the mush looked a bit like blended up tomatoes. I raised the fork to my mouth and ate it. It tasted like well-seasoned steak. It was delicious!

"What is this?" I asked.

Victoria stopped drinking her potion thing, and wiped her mouth, "That's goat."

"What!" I said, very surprised. If anything I thought it was cow.

"You seriously didn't see that Victoria pressed the button: goat?" David asked.

"No, I couldn't read it," I said, everyone at the table started laughing.

I take away bite of my food. All of a sudden, these three girls walk up to our table, I spit my food out back onto my plate. These three girls had huge wings on their backs. One girl had white hair with golden and pink wings, which didn't match the color of her dress. Another had vibrant green hair that matched her wings, her eyes were light green. Her green hair was done into one long braid. The last one had red hair, and her wings seemed to be on fire. Her hair went down to her mid-torso, it was curly. They were all taller than me.

"What the heck are you!" I asked, it came out a bit more harsh then I intended.

"I could ask you the same question," the one with white hair replied.

"W-Why do t-they have w-wings?" I asked Victoria.

"Do you seriously not know, they're fairies, duh," She said.

"What are you? Demon, witch?" The white haired one asked again.

"Um, you guys are perfectly okay that a mythical creature is at your school?" I asked the table. They all nodded.

"They're not mythical creatures, if anyone was to be an outlier at this school, it would be Zachary." David said, "and you, you're both demons."

I shook my head, "I'm not a demon."

"I thought it smelled like mortal!" The white haired girl said, then her and her friends flew away. I watched them go, and I couldn't believe my eyes! Fairies and pixies were flying all around in the sky.

"I have to go lie down," I said, running back to the room. Victoria followed me.

I got to my room and opened the door, Victoria was already there.

"Don't listen to them, I know they wouldn't let a mortal into this school, the fairies are bullies," Victoria said sitting on her bed.

"I don't know what you guys were talking about though! I didn't even think fairies, pixies, demons, and stuff existed. I went through the school earlier and past by the girl with green hair, but she didn't have wings. I found this book though," I said, pulling out book from under my bed. I handed it to Victoria.

She started flipping through some pages before saying, "This book has a powerful spell on it. Do you know what this book does?"

"No, no idea," I said.

"It grants the power of sight."
