CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
Monday dawned, and I awoke with a smile. The weekend had been wonderful, and I was eagerly anticipating another visit to Michael's house.
The day started off well as I was given a lift to school by my mother's old friend, who generously gifted me with some money. I arrived at school early, and spotted Michael and Amanda in the classroom. We started chatting about film related topics and I inquired about Amanda's absence on Friday. I was relieved to hear that she was okay, as our assumption that she was sick was indeed correct.
As we were immersed in our conversation, the school bell rang, signaling the start of the assembly. We then proceeded to the assembly,
After the assembly, we made our way back to our class, our lively chatter still filling the air. As we walked together, I couldn't help but feel a strange sensation of being watched.
My eyes then suddenly met that of a boy from my class staring at me, but I didn't bother to entertain the next thought that was about to come in.
As I settled into my class, I couldn't shake the feeling that someone was watching me. Glancing around, I caught sight of the same boy staring at me intently. I felt a knot forming in my stomach. Why was this boy staring at me so intently? Was there something he wanted to tell me?
The boy was seated on the other corner of the class in the second row. His eyes were piercing, and he seemed to have something important to tell me.
The minutes ticked by slowly as we waited for our teacher, Tutor John, to arrive. I tried my best to focus on my work, but the boy's intense stare was distracting me.
When the classroom door finally opened, Tutor John strode in and took his position at the front of the class. As he began the lesson, I tried my best to keep my eyes on the whiteboard. But every so often, I found my gaze shifting towards the boy in the corner, who was still staring at me. Michael and Amanda caught on to my distraction and shot me curious glances, but I pretended nothing was wrong.
Finally, the bell rang to signal the end of the period.
During the next classes, I tried my best to avoid the boy's gaze, but I could still feel his intense stare. Ten minutes before break, Michael and Amanda were called to Tutor Beatrice's office by a student. I wondered what the meeting was about, but I assumed it had something to do with the recent assignment we had been given.
As the bell rang for the first break, I was still waiting in the classroom for their return. Everyone else had gone out for the break when the boy who had been staring at me approached me. I froze in fear as he stood close to me, bending his face near my ear.
In a low, grave voice, the boy uttered a single, chilling phrase: "Be careful."
My heart pounded in my chest as I struggled to make sense of his words. Before I could open my mouth to ask what he meant, the boy had already walked away from the classroom.
I sat there, frozen in place, my mind spinning with questions. What did he mean by "be careful"? Was I in danger?
Finally, Michael and Amanda returned to the classroom, their expressions grave.
"Are you okay?" Michael asked, concern evident in his voice.
I shook my head, unable to speak as I struggled to process the events of the last few minutes.
"Tell us what happened," Amanda said, her voice gentle but insistent.
I recounted the events of the day, from the mysterious boy's intense gaze to his ominous warning. "A boy in our class has been staring at me all day. It started after the assembly. Few minutes ago, while you were both away, the boy muttered something to me. He told me to "be careful." It sounded like a warning. I thought it was just a strange encounter, but it seems like the weird behavior from our classmates has resumed."
"That's really strange," Michael replied, his brow furrowed in thought. "I think you should report him to a teacher or even the principal."
"It's David, isn't it?" Amanda chimed in, her eyes narrowing.
"Yeah, it's David," I confirmed. "How did you know?" I asked, curious.
"I saw him staring at us weirdly about a week ago," Amanda explained. "I forgot to tell you guys."
Michael nodded thoughtfully. "He's always been kind of quiet and odd, but I didn't think he was capable of something like this."
Amanda looked at me with a concerned expression. "Paul, I think we should be careful around him. Maybe we should avoid him as much as possible, just in case."
"I agree with Amanda," Michael added. "But if things start to get really dangerous, maybe we should ask our parents to withdraw us from the school."
I considered their advice, and the possibility of leaving the school.
"You're right," I replied. "If things get too dangerous, we should definitely tell our parents. But for now, I think we should try to just keep our distance from David."
Michael nodded in agreement.
"Sounds like a plan. We'll stick together and look out for each other."
With their support and understanding, my fear and confusion subsided somewhat, but I couldn't shake the unease from the back of my mind.
With that, we left the topic behind and spent the rest of our break chatting about other things, which served to dissipate some of the tension.
As the days passed, the situation with David seemed to take a backseat in our minds. However, there were still moments when we'd catch him staring at us or passing by too closely, leaving us with an unsettling feeling.
