CHAPTER SEVEN

There is a lot to tell about my time at John Felix Academy, but I'm going to skip over some parts and focus on the main happenings

The rest of the term went smoothly, of course, some weird stuff still happened but not at an intense level. A day could not go by without weird stuff happening in the school.
Now, I would like to tell you about my first exam experience at John Felix Academy. It began like this:

Even though the air was thick with fear and exam fever, and many students were nervous, I was confident. I was the confident type. I was never really that scared of exams. So, I will start with that part of the story now.

On a Friday, our form master, Tutor John, shared us into the classes we would be writing our exams in.

We were separated into different classes. Mine was SSS 1 class. My seat mates were separated from me. Michael was to write his exam in JSS 3 class, Amanda was to write her exam in SS 2 class and Jessica was to write her exam in JSS 2 class.

On that day, we did our final revision for some subjects which included math, English, Basic science and two other subjects. We usually closed on time on Fridays. Our normal closing time was 4:00 PM, but on Fridays it was 2:30 PM, but that day, which was revision day, we closed earlier than usual and that was 1:30pm.

In class, Amanda, Michael, and I talked about how we would prepare for our exams and our exam time table, which was already out. When the bell rang for closing, Michael and I walked home together.

My mother knew that my school would be closing early, so she gave me a key to the house with instructions for when I came back from school. I opened the door to the house. First, I took a bath, then I cooked some instant noodles to eat, as she had instructed.

After eating, I relaxed for a bit before starting to study the subjects that I had on the first day of my exam, which was Monday. Two hours of studying passed, and then my mom came home. I greeted her, and as usual, she asked me how school was, and I told her it was fine. She also asked me if I'd eaten, and I replied that I had. For the rest of the hours of the day, I relaxed and read until night came.

Although there was light in the night, my mom didn't allow me to watch TV. By that time, I had already eaten dinner. She told me to remain in my room and cool my head from reading before I did my final revision.

I did as she said and woke up very early in the morning to browse through my books for the last time. It took me barely an hour to do that. The wall clock on my room said 5:45am. So, I stood up from my bed and got ready for school. My mom reheated what we had eaten the night before. It was beans and rice.

Thirty minutes later, I arrived at school. I went straight to class and found Amanda and Michael brainstorming. Then I joined them. A few minutes later, the bell rang for the assembly. We all went out for the assembly, and the principal addressed us about our exam, which was starting that day.

The principal's words were encouraging and motivating, and as he addressed us, I noticed that many of my classmates seemed nervous and scared. I remained calm, but I could feel the tension and pressure in the air.

After the principal's speech, we sang the national anthem and recited the pledge. Then, we went back to our various assigned classes, where we would be writing our exams for the term.

I settled into the SS 1 class where I had been assigned. We were four in our row of seats, and it was third to the last row on the left.

In my row of seats, my seatmates consisted of Chinedu from JSS 3, Mathew from SS 1, Abigail from SS 3, and me. I was seated close to Chinedu, who was on the edge of the left-hand side of our row.

The desks in the classroom were in neat, straight lines, and the whiteboard was to my right. Turning left, a window that overlooked the school's basketball court could be seen. I was on the fourth floor of the school building, where only senior classes were located.

The room was starting to fill up with students, and the room buzzed with conversation. People were nervously asking each other what they thought the exam would be like, and many were comparing their notes. The atmosphere was tense, but I felt confident. I had studied hard and knew the material well.

A teacher named Mr. Philip entered the room, and the class fell silent. He was carrying a pile of answer booklets. He placed the booklets on his desk and instructed us to get out our pens and pencils. Then, he began to hand out the booklets. I felt a bit nervous as I took the booklet from him, and I could feel the nervous energy in the room.

A few minutes later, another teacher came in to give Mr. Philip our exam questions, which he then shared out according to our various classes.

Once he had shared out all the exam questions, Mr. Philip took a look at the time on his phone and told us to start the exam. We were given one hour and thirty minutes to finish. I took a deep breath and began to read the questions.

They were not as difficult as I had feared, and I felt relieved. I started to answer the questions, trying to take my time and think carefully about each one.

I began with the objective questions, before moving to the theory. The exam I was writing was math.

Forty-five minutes had passed, and I was already working on the theory questions. As I was trying to figure out how to get the answer to one of the math questions, my eyes mistakenly fell on the shaded work of Chinedu in the objective section.

When I looked at Chinedu's work, I was shocked to see that he had shaded all his answers "A." I was puzzled. Had he done guesswork, or was he a genius? I dismissed the thought and refocused on the question I was working on.

Fifteen minutes later, Chinedu was done with the exam, and I just stared at him in surprise. Was he that smart, or had he written nonsense and decided to submit his paper early? I couldn't be sure, but I decided to put it out of my mind.

Eighteen minutes before our time was up, I was finished with the exam and I submitted my paper. Then, I left the classroom to do a quick review before the next paper started. I tried not to think about Chinedu's work, and focused on the next exam.

I remember that we had two other papers after math: Christian Religious Studies (CRS) and Social Studies. Both exams went well, and by the end of the day, I felt pretty good about how things had gone.

During the closing hours, Amanda, Michael, and I talked about how our exam went. We compared our question papers and asked each other what options we had shaded and how we had answered certain questions before we went home.

When I got home from school, I was tired but also a little anxious about how well I had done on the exams. I told my mother about my day, and she said not to worry and to just focus on resting and relaxing for a while before I prepared for the next day's exams and I did as she said.
