Fusion Summoning and the Extra Deck
Welcome, welcome, you know me, I'm SSGSSJ2, world's nerdiest nerd. I'm here to educate all you uninformed Pokemon players about the wonders of Yugioh. On this episode, we'll go over the Extra Deck, how to use it, and what can be used in it. First off, the Extra Deck:
The Extra Deck is a stack of up to 15 cards (plus Tokens if you have them) that contain cards of a special type that can only be Special Summoned in a special way.. These are Fusion, Synchro, and Xyz Monsters. There are also Pendulum Monsters, but we'll get there later. Let's start with the oldest mechanic of the Extra Deck, Fusion.
Fusion Summoning is the oldest Extra Deck mechanic in Yugioh, as old as the game itself. For a Fusion Summon, you need:
A) A Fusion Monster in the Extra Deck.
B) A card that can start a Fusion Summon
C) Monsters that are applicable as the materials for the Fusion Monster in Point A, and are in the place specified on the card from Point B.
As an example, I am trying to Fusion Summon.
The monster is "Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon." The materials are 3 "Blue-Eyes White Dragon."
The Spell I am using is Polymerization, which fuses from the field and/or hand.
I have 1 Blue-Eyes White Dragon on my field and 2 in my hand.
So, during my turn, I activate Polymerization. I send the Blue-Eyes on my field and the two in my hand to my graveyard, and Fusion Summon the Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon from my Extra Deck.
Pros:
*Requires next to no field presence
*Fusion Monsters outnumber other Extra Deck types
Cons:
*Only Fusion Decks can play Fusion Monsters. If your deck isn't meant to Fusion Summon, it won't truly Fusion Summon. (Instant Fusion don't count.)
*Many Fusion Monsters require specific materials or need a large amount of foresight in deck building to make them
*Not all Fusion Monsters are good. Most are really bad.
Rogue Examples: (Fusion Spells, Traps, and Monsters that are quite different.)
Miracle Fusion/Dragon's Mirror
These cards fuse by banishing cards from the field/graveyard. This requires next to no field presence and can be a decent comeback option.
Instant Fusion
Pay 1000 LP; Special Summon one Level 5 or lower Fusion Monster from the Extra Deck. (This Special Summon is treated as a Fusion Summon.) It cannot attack, and is destroyed during the End Phase.
This card is one of 2 examples of a splashable Fusion Spell. Usually, you'll Summon Elder Entity Norden to revive a Monster from the grave, but the applications for that will be explored later.
Brilliant Fusion
When this card is activated (It's a Continuous Spell, that's why it says that), Fusion Summon one "Gem-Knight" Fusion Monster from your Extra Deck, using monsters from your Deck as Fusion Materials. (There's more, but it doesn't matter)
THIS. FLUFFALING. CARD. This is the 2nd splashable Fusion Spell. It takes almost no commitment to run 2 Gem-Knight Garnet, at least one Light Attribute Monster, and 3 Brilliant Fusion to make a Gem-Knight Seraphinite, who gives you a second Normal Summon per turn.
Gladiator Beast Gyzarus/ABC - Dragon Buster
These two share one thing in common: they don't need Polymerization or any other Spell Card to fuse. These cards are known as Contact Fusions; Monsters that can fuse with the Fusion Monster's effect and not a Spell's effect.
Anyways, that's all I got for this one! Tune in next time when I go through the complexities of Synchro Summoning. Happy Dueling!
