The Start of a Journey
Michael woke to the erie silence.
He sat up slowly looking around at his surroundings. He was in the small, grey, two man tent. Mia lay to his right still fast asleep, her hair was pointing in all directions and the light blue blanket that covered her had slipped down to her waist during the night.
Michael gingerly crept out of the tent, stopping only to grab his backpack which he used as a pillow, trying not to wake his sister. Once he was out he looked around their campsite for any danger, be it soldiers or wild animals (he wasn't sure which was worse). Seeing no danger, he raked through his bag to find his water bottle. He almost laughed at the Avengers that decorated the plastic bottle. The Avengers had been his favourite movie before all this... chaos. No, he told himself, don't think about the past, just keep going forward.
His sister sleeping stumbling out of the tent awoke him from his daydream. He quickly took a slug of water and put the bottle away.
After a couple minutes of awkward silence, Mia grabbed a chocolate digestive biscuit out her own blue backpack, which had similar items to his own.
Michael turned away and started to pack the tent away. It was their morning routine, Michael put the tent away (he had tried to teach Mia once but... let's just say he didn't try again) and Mia was on look out.
"Are you planning on ignoring me all day?" Mia asked obviously annoyed.
The sudden noise almost made Michael jump. Almost. "I have no idea what you are talking about." He continued to put the tent away.
When he did finally turn around, his sister's face that literally screamed really greeted him.
Michael sighed (which he seemed to be doing a lot of lately) sitting down on the ground facing Mia who was already sitting.
"Look , I have no idea what to say, I honestly want to go but how on earth are we." He pointed at both of them "two little kids going to get from England to the west side of America as in on the other side of the world."
"Well..we can figure something out, like they did in all those books I read before the war." Oh yeah that's right his sister the biggest book worm in history thought that we just had to believe. While Mia had been the kind of girl who tries hard in school and reads for fun, Michael had been the kind of boy who loved any sport, but his favourite was by far atheletics. "- come on, please." He almost missed the end of her speech.
Michael made the mistake of looking into those warm brown eyes, he could never resist that look, before or after the start of the war.
"Ok, I can't believe I'm saying this but, we'll try to get to San Francisco and this safe haven." Yep sounded just as crazy out loud as it did in his mind.
Mia literally jumped up and down, screaming with excitement.
"But you have to help pack up before we can get on the road." Michael finished, but it didn't diminish her excitement, not even a little.
Well at least he made Mia happy and who knows maybe their is a pot of gold at the end of this dark, horrible rainbow.
