Horse Friends
"Where are we?" Mia asked looking at the rest of their little group.
"In Canada, near the border between here and America." Dan replied looking around. "We better keep moving and try to get away from here. Do you kids even have somewhere to go?"
"You don't know where we're going and yet you came with us?!" Maddy demanded as they started to walk, hopefully in the right direction.
"Eh, yes?"
"No fighting you two. We're heading to San Francisco in California there is a safe haven for kids there, but I'm sure there will be room for you." Michael interrupted.
They walked on in silence.
"Hey, I think I see something up ahead!" Sebastian shouted and started running forward, Mia quickly ran after him. Michael, Maddy and Dan exchanged looks before sprinting after them. Mystic, who sat in Maddy's arms, protested greatly at this.
"It's an old farm. Look there are horses!" Sebastian as he ran nearer.
"Wait, horses?" Michael asked.
As he asked this he turned a corner to find an abandoned farm with seven horses grazing in an overgrown field.
"Check the barn, see if there is any equipment we can use, if we can ride these horses south we will get there quicker." Dan shouted as he ran to the barn. Michael followed while Mia, Sebastian and Maddy stayed with the horses.
Michael and Dan slowed as they entered the barn. A broken window allowed light to enter the barn, cobwebs covered most of the room. In the back was a small storage area, eight saddles and bridals sat on a shelf.
"I think we can salvage enough of these." Dan said as he lifted a saddle of the dusty shelf.
"You know about horses?" Michael asked.
"Yeah, before the war I would go riding with my little sister. She was killed near the start of the war."
"I'm sorry." Michael replied awkwardly.
"It's okay, I'm over it. I mean we all have lost people, right?"
"Yeah."
They worked in silence grabbing the useful equipment and casting away anything useless.
A few minutes later they walked back to the field with the horses.
"Hey, pick a horse that is the right size for you to ride." Dan shouted.
A minute later, Sebastian, Maddy and Mia all came back with horses.
Sebastian had a chocolate brown male horse, Maddy had a female horse as Black as night and Mia had a pure white male stallion.
"You too, Michael." Dan called to Michael as he helped fit the horses with the saddles and bridals.
Michael looked around seeing another wild looking chocolate horse, a calm light brown stallion, a tall grey stallion and a white Arabian with brown patches.
Making a decision, he strolled towards the Arabian. As he approached the horse looked up. He looked into her calm brown eyes. He slowly extended his hand towards her closing his eyes, a second later he felt hot breath against his hands and opened his eyes. She had put her head in his hand, he gently stroked her long white main.
"Hey girl, would it be okay if I rode you?" Michael didn't know why he asked her, it just felt...right.
He led her over to the rest of his group. Dan had chosen the grey stallion. He quickly put the saddle and bridal on both horses.
"You going to name her? The others named there's. Sebastian named his Chocolate, Maddy named hers Midnight and Mia named hers snow. This guy is storm." Dan asked.
"Dusty. Her name is Dusty."
"Okay, you think you can get up on her?"
"Yeah, I think so."
Dan walked back over to the others and helped Mia up on her horse.
Michael watched for a second before lifting himself up onto the new named Dusty.
"Come on!" Dan shouted from Storm." Let's get going."
And with that the group moved on riding the horses. Mystic hiding in a saddle bag attached to Maddy's horse Midnight.
They catered on south, each day getting closer to a new life.
