Part 9
"Oh, how wonderful!" My grandma exclaimed, suddenly overtaken my happiness.
"Yeah!" Dakota agreed.
"I was just wondering where Brock has been for the past two days, he was supposed to go home," Grandma explained.
"Oh, I'm so sorry! He was over at my house the entire time," Dakota said.
Grandma was silent to this so Dakota continued,
"You see, he got a bit lost in the woods, walked off the path. He wasn't sure how exactly to get out of the situation he was in. Therefore, he continued up the path he was now on and found himself at my house. He was extremely relieved when I invited him in and gave him food and rest, he had been walking around pointlessly all day. I invited him to stay the night in our spare bedroom. We're really good friends and he loved it here."
"Right," Grandma said simply.
"Now, we're actually on our way to my dance recital. Rider is very interested in dance and he said he would love to watch me dance."
"Alright then," Grandma answered, sounding slightly more convinced, "can I speak to him?"
"Of course!" Dakota exclaimed happily.
She then passed the phone to me, giving me a warning look (reminding me to go along with the story). I took it, keeping it on speaker.
"Hey," I greeted.
"Tell me how you got lost in the woods Rider. You've followed that path properly for years and now you get lost?" she got straight to the point, ignoring my greeting.
"Alright, don't get mad, but I thought the same old path was boring and I decided to go through the forest. I'm old enough to know directions," I answered, looking at Dakota for approval, to which she nodded.
"Apparently not, considering you got lost!" she exclaimed.
"Yeah I understand, I'm sorry."
"Okay, we're past that. Who's this Dakota girl?"
"My friend from school, she's really nice," I said.
"And you're going to her dance recital?"
"Yeah."
"Is anyone else there out of your friends?" grandma continued questioning.
"Um yes actually", I replied, causing Brock's eyes to widen, "my friend Brock."
"Oh, can I talk to him?" grandma asked.
"Yup, sure," I answered
I handed the phone to Brock, who instantly protested, going up close to my ear and whispering,
"Rider, I swear to god, I'm really bad at lying! I'm bad with adults too! I don't wanna talk to your grandma!"
"Too bad, do your best!" I whispered back.
Sighing, he took the phone and plastered a fake smile on his face, exclaiming,
"Well, you must be Rider's grandma!"
"Yeah, that's me," grandma replied, sounding friendly.
"Rider has told me a lot about you. How are you doing?" he questioned, a pained look on his face as he looked to us, me giving him a big thumbs up.
"I'm fine thanks, how are you?"
"I'm great, I'm really excited to watch Dakota dance! She's really good, you know!" Brock said cheerfully.
"Yeah, I bet!" Grandma answered.
Dakota and I simply gave each other shocked looks. Why was Brock getting along with my grandma so well?
"So you're Rider's friend from school?" she continued.
"Yeah! We haven't been friends for long so we never really got to hang out until now, he's a really nice guy!"
"Yup, he sure is. A little secretive but sure nice," grandma said, sighing.
"He really didn't mean to get lost like that, everyone makes mistakes." Brock justified my actions.
"Yeah, I understand," she agreed.
"So we should really get going now. Do you want to speak to Rider one last time before we go?" Brock questioned.
"Um, yes please."
"Sure," Brock answered, handing the phone over to me.
"Hey," I greeted again.
"Hi Rider, I just wanted to apologize for yelling at you. I was just scared and stressed," grandma explained.
"That's alright. And I'm sorry for wandering off like that," I replied, genuinely sorry.
"When do you plan on getting back home?"
"Um", I glanced at Dakota and Brock, "tomorrow? maybe?"
"Alright," she said.
We were silent for a second until she added,
"By the way, do you like Brock?"
I was sure taken by surprise by this question. I glanced at Brock who had a huge smile plastered on his face, he had heard the question as the phone was still on speaker.
"Um, what do you mean? He's a great friend," I tried answering.
"I mean, don't be afraid to tell your grandma how you really feel, " she replied.
"Grandma! Where are you getting these thoughts?" I exclaimed.
"Hey, don't deny it. I know everything!"
"Alright, I'm hanging up!" I yelled
"Hey just don't forget to invite me to the wedding!" she laughed.
"BYE, GRANDMA!!" I screamed over her as I quickly hung up and threw the phone on the grass.
This reaction triggered an uncontrollable laugh attack from Brock and Dakota. I stood there as Brock rolled on the ground and Dakota was literally choking. After around 5 minutes, they finally stopped.
"Wow, what was that all about?" Dakota questioned, once she finally caught her breath.
"Um, I don't know! Ask my grandma!" I replied, slightly embarrassed.
"It's fine, we all know I'm irresistible," Brock stated, a smile still plastered on his face.
"NO! You are highly resistible!" I exclaimed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"I like your grandma," Brock added as we continued on our way.
"Me too!" Dakota agreed enthusiastically.
I just glanced at them both and rolled my eyes.
I was still mixed in thoughts about my grandma's final comment in our conversation. What made her even think that I like Brock? What did I do or say for her to think that? I remembered how my grandma was never wrong when she predicted or felt something. She seemed to have a sixth sense for stuff like this. I remembered the story that stuck to me all these years, a strange experience involving one of these feelings.
I was over at my grandma's cottage for the weekend, it was summer and I had time off school. I must have been 11 or 12 years old, young and curious. I awoke to a tapping on my window. A glance at the clock on my bedside table informed me of the early hour, it read 2:00 am. In the darkness, I stared at the outline of the window in the dark. Then, I heard it again, a light tap and then silence. I held my breath and listened, wishing to hear something other than the wind outside. Another tap, and silence. I lifted my covers up to my chin and sat still, something was telling me that this wasn't normal. I shifted in my bed, which made a creaking noise. To this, I heard three taps, slow, one after the other, as if a person knocking. I widened my eyes as my heart pounded. I have to do something, I thought. Of course, I was crazy to even think of doing something about this, I didn't know what or who was out there. As I rose from my bed and headed towards the window, all I could hear was my breath. That's when the silence was interrupted by my grandma bursting into my room. I quickly turned to face her, wondering why she was up at this hour. She simply looked at me with her pale blue eyes and said calmly,
"Rider, sweetie, get away from the window."
I furrowed my eyebrows as I backed away from the window that I had barely reached and returned to my bed to sit.
"What's wrong gran?" I questioned, confused.
"I have a bad feeling," she said simply, walking toward the window and closing the blinds.
"What kind of feeling?" I asked, still not fully understanding what she meant.
"Listen, Rider", she explained, sitting beside me and putting her arm around me, "sometimes I get these feelings and I know they're right, you see, they've never been wrong before. Sometimes they're dreams, like now and other times, I just get this feeling in my gut."
I nodded, remembering the times my grandma insisted that I would get a good mark on the test I was worried about, which happened. And the time she smiled at me and told me I would make the soccer team I had never told her about trying out for.
She then put me back to bed and I heard nothing the remainder of the night.
But the part I remember best is the next morning, I was sitting at the TV while grandma made pancakes. That's when I heard the news, an escaped serial killer was found last night in the woods. My stomach turned as I called for my grandma. She simply looked at the news and back at me, sighing.
"Had you opened that window last night, I don't know what would have happened," she stated.
I hugged her, "Thanks, gran."
