Part 6
A/N
Hello everybody, how are you?
I'm back with another chapter and I am tired
hope you like this chapter and please vote!
We walked down that mini-mountain and stayed silent for the most part. I was still traumatized from the mountain goat sighting and I'm sure Brock was tired from literally parenting me all day. What can I say? I take a lot of effort to deal with. Looking around, we were surrounded by trees on either side, growing on the mountain. Down below our feet was grass and moss-covered ground with occasional logs and branches getting caught in our feet. In the distance was more of the same forest we were already familiar with, nice, flat land, a small amount of trees, rocky riverside. The stream was still accompanying us on our journey, running alongside, creating a loud wooshing noise that was somewhat pleasing at this point. The weather was still cool, not too bad, with a warm breeze washing over us every now and then.
I felt empty and a bit upset by the loss of my basket, my mood simply sticking in the middle of sad and nothing at all. My danishes were special to me! Now I know, I'm almost 15, I shouldn't be this childish but, let me tell you, I was scared to find out what we were going to eat for the rest of our journey. I know the danishes wouldn't have lasted either but, they were something! Watch this weirdo make me eat tree bark, I am not ready for that level of hopelessness. Even worse though, would be starving completely, he could make me walk for 24 hours straight without eating. In conclusion, I don't know what he'll think of.
We reached the bottom of the mountain, flat ground at last. Continuing to walk in the exact same manner as before, we moved through the forest, staying along the side of the stream. I was feeling quite fine, not tired at all but not walking with the most passion either. Brock was quite a bit ahead of me, walking like an athlete, or hiker that walks at the literal speed of light. I jogged slightly to try to catch up but, despite my effort to stay with him, he ended up speeding up and leaving me behind, walking slowly. I still had him in sight though, so that was the upside.
We had been moving for around 2 or 3 more hours. I had no idea, but I was exhausted. Let me tell you, walking behind Brock and not losing him completely is quite a challenge. Luckily, he also got tired and slowed down after about an hour and a half, but that guy was SPEED WALKING his way through the forest. It was getting a bit later and, as told by my phone, it was 6:30 by the time Brock stopped and suggested,
"Hey, why don't we settle down for the night, it's getting late and I can tell we're both tired."
"Wonderful idea", I agreed sitting on the moss-covered ground.
Brock rolled his eyes and also sat down. He then turned to me and asked,
"Are you hungry?"
"Ravenous," I replied, considering eating tree bark.
"Okay, we need to find something to eat."
"Well, you're the one that's been living in a forest for a week, what are you waiting for?"
"Well," Brock mocked, "why don't you help me catch some fish?"
"Ew no!" I exclaimed.
"Fine, make a fire while I catch fish," he replied, sighing
"How?"
"You've never made a fire?"
"No!" I said," and I'm surprised you have."
"Well, my brother is into this stuff and he taught me some survival tips, which I didn't find useful until I got stuck in the wild on my own," Brock explained.
"Alrighty, so teach me how to start a fire," I nodded.
"You're going to have to wait!" he yelled back, walking away.
I sat there, on the ground for around 15 minutes, waiting for him to return. I was starting to get suspicious and even thought that he might have left me in the middle of the woods on my own when I saw a figure in the distance. I may or may not have had a miny heart attack, thinking it was Matt Wolf but, noticing the familiar features of Brock, settled down and yelled out,
"Where did you go, Russia?"
"Very funny, I went to find rocks," he replied, laying down two sparkly rocks on the ground in front of me.
"I thought you can use any rocks," I said, confused.
"Nope, they are special, high in iron."
"Wow, interesting."
"Alright," Brock sighed, "now, go find some dry grass."
"Well, okay," I agreed.
I got up and walked away, not sure where exactly I was going. I saw Brock walk off as well when I left. I was slowly pacing around, looking for dry grass. Everything around was getting ready for winter, trees not losing their leaves just yet, but surely beginning to develop the beautiful fall colours. I looked under a bush (which I later figured out was a raspberry bush). There, I noticed some pale brown dry grass. Feeling accomplished and happy, I bent down and picked it up. I then headed back toward our campsite, as I will call it. When I arrived, the scout (Brock) was already there, sitting on the ground, dirt ground with a pile of branches beside him, branches of various sizes.
"Woah, could you have taken longer?" he commented.
"It's not as easy as it seems!" I replied, frowning but putting down my pile of dry grass beside his pile of braches.
I sat down beside him as he began instructing me,
"Watch carefully," he said.
He put the pile of dry grass in front of him on the dirt, as his work surface. He then picked up the two rocks, glancing at me,
"The dry grass is here to catch the sparks," he explained.
He held the rocks in opposite hands and struck them against each other repeatedly,
"You do this to create sparks, now they may not be visible at this time of day, but they are there if you look closely."
And it was true, as I focused my vision, I saw tiny lights flying towards the bed of dry grass. After some time, I saw a small stream of smoke coming from the middle of the grass. Brock noticed it as well as he quickly glanced in my direction and picked up the bed of grass. Folding it in half, he began blowing on it. In little time, the smoke stream began increasing as smoke poured out of the grass bed.
"Alright, now I need you to grab a handful of the thinnest branches you can find in my pile," he instructed.
Doing as told, I looked through his pile of branches and found a few tiny branches. I passed them to him, eager to see what will happen next. He put down the smoking bed of grass on the dirt and piled the thin branches over top. Sighing in relief he sat back and watched in silence. Soon, we witnessed tiny streams of smoke now rising from the thin branches. Brock smiled and turned to me,
"Alright, now pass some more branches, about pencil thickness."
I did as told and handed Brock a bunch of branches, as thick as pencils. He now layered them on top of the thin branches, in a cone shape. I was now familiar with this part of the process, as I recalled doing this while camping.
"As I might assume, you have seen this part before," Brock said, observing my interest and possibly reading my mind.
"Yeah, I have when my dad got the fire going, my family goes camping a lot."
"Okay, so that means I can leave you to watch the fire while I go and get a fish?" he questioned.
"Um yeah?" I answered, unsure myself.
"Well, when these burn a bit, you can layer the slightly bigger ones and then the bigger ones and so on, but I don't believe I will be gone for long. You better have been listening well, you'll be doing this tomorrow," he said, giving me a skeptical look.
"I might start a forest fire but, it's fine! So, be on your way!" I said, smiling uncertainly.
Rolling his eyes, Brocked walked off.
"Hey, has anyone ever told you that you roll your eyes too much?" I called after him.
He just flipped me off and continued walking.

Brock came back around half an hour later when the day was beginning to get slightly chillier and I could tell night was coming. He had in hand a quite big sized fish, which I did not ask how he caught with his bare hands. We ate like monsters that night. When we were finally satisfied, we found cozy spots to sleep on the grass, with a clear view of the stars. We talked for a while, laying side by side before falling into a deep sleep after a long day, ready for the adventures to come.
