"What took you two so long?" Edward called as Mary made her way carefully to the ground and I just jumped off the platform.
Iqua shouted something at me as I fell, but I chose to ignore it. I rolled when I landed, bounced to my feet and skidded to a stop in front of Edward.
Edward raised an eyebrow at me. "Getting a little cocky are you, lass?"
I smirked at him. "Aye, a bit."
"And since when did you say 'aye'?"
"Aye don't know," I said. "Maybe since you agreed to train me."
Raven rolled his eyes. "That was an awful pun."
"I know. Thanks."
Edward laughed and pulled my hood down. "Hey!" I pulled my hood back up and held it there.
"We need to do our training Rookie," he said quietly. "Free-running."
I let go of my hood and grinned at him. "Let's do it!"
Edward chuckled again and led the way away from the others, deeper into the forest. He sped up at a stead rate the further we got from our friends. I kept up with him easily. I had a feeling it wasn't meant to be this simple.
Edward glanced back and made a sharp turn to the right. I almost missed it, so to turn faster I jumped up and used a tree on my left as leverage. I spun and landed in a run, sprinting after Edward, who was now moving much faster.
He led me on a chase through the forest. He just kept running and running. I realized, after he looked over his shoulder for the ninth time, that he wanted me to catch him. He continued to look over his shoulder periodically, as if to see if I was still there.
"I'm onto you," I murmured. It hadn't seemed like free-running, but now that I knew what he wanted...
When he turned back to running after checking over his shoulder again I jumped into a tree and started in the same direction. I did my best to be quiet.
Edward glanced over his shoulder and stopped in a small clearing. He smiled slightly and turned in a slow circle, studying the bushes. "You're looking the wrong way..." I whispered with a smirk.
Just as he was about to look up, I dropped out of the tree and landed on top of him. He shouted in surprise.
I jumped off and smiled as he stood up. "Hello Edward."
Edward winced. "I'll be honest, I was not expecting that."
"Good. That was the point."
Edward laughed. "Yes it was. This is probably the first and the last time I will ever say this."
"Say what? That I was right?"
"No. That you are the hardest and the easiest person I've had to train. You are also the most annoying-"
"Why thank you!" I grinned.
Edward sighed. "Point proven. And, even though I've only been training you for about a week... you already know everything I can teach you. All you need is more experience and you'll fly to the top."
I frowned, suddenly a little nervous of what he was going to say. "What do you mean by that?"
Edward smiled. "I mean, that you are going to need to come with me, Adé and Raven."
Excitement blossomed inside of me. Another mission! With Edward and Raven! Not to mention that Adé, Edward's Quartermaster, was going. "Is James going?" I asked.
Edward shook his head. "No, Raven gave James and Iqua full ownership of The Royal Phoenix. They have missions of their own."
"So what is ours?"
"To find the long lost Observatory! I would ask you to help with finding and killing Torres, but that's a personal matter."
"I understand that. If you don't mind though..." I trailed off, not sure what Edward would think.
"Go on, Rook," Edward said. "Spit it out."
"I want to stop my father and his Templars, but I do really want to help find the Observatory."
"There will be plenty of time for that later," Edward promised.
I tilted my head. I thought I'd heard something. Edward frowned. "Rookie?"
"Shh," I hissed.
Edward watched me curiously. I was sure I'd heard voices. I backed up and crouched in a large clump of bushes. Edward met my eyes once, gaze questioning, before ducking into bushes on the opposite side of the clearing.
There were definitely voices coming our way. I could tell Edward had heard them as well, he was listening intently.
"-one's strong," a deep voice said.
"She won't be any trouble," another, pompous sounding voice said. "We've got strong steel chains in the brig."
"Are you sure?" Deep Voice asked. "You never want to underestimate your enemies, and what if the two of us ain't enough?"
"There's more than two," Pompous Man said. "I've hired help for us. They're following us even now."
I didn't like the sound of that. I focused hard, trying to activate Eagle Vision the way Edward had shown me. Nothing happened. I started to move toward Edward but realized that the bushes didn't go all the way around.
"What if your help isn't enough? One of the others said she's been seen with a man called Edward Kenway," Deep Voice said in a worried tone.
Are they talking about me? I wondered. I could tell which direction the voices were coming from now.
"They have plenty of practice catching assassins," Sir Pompous said confidently. "I gave them the signal a couple of minutes ago. They should return soon. I told them they would get payed very well when we return to Mr. Starrick."
They were definitely talking about me. That much was very clear. I started to move toward Edward again, not caring that I would need to sprint across a gap of open space.
There was a cough. I took my gaze from the open space I was about to run across and froze. Two men were holding Edward down. Choking him.
I jumped to my feet. "Stop!"
I ran forward, faster than I thought it was possible for me to go, and killed both men. Edward gasped and rolled away. "Thanks for the save lass," he groaned.
"Are you alright?" I studied the trees and bushes around us. The chatter of the two people had stopped.
"I will be. Not alright enough to fight though," Edward coughed again. "Just hold them off for a few minutes."
I tried once again to activate Eagle Vision, and once again was met with failure. I could see two people dressed in red close to where I had been originally. They must have been the people talking.
"Rook! Look out!"
Rather than make me duck or dodge, like Raven had probably meant, his voice made me turn in surprise. A second later it really registered what he'd said and I dove to my right. I was a little late though and probably helped the person that landed on top of me. After all, I had just saved them the trouble of knocking me down.
There was a clash of swords and I could just barely see Raven fighting the two red people I'd seen. The person on top of me rolled me over and wrapped their hands around my neck.
They had dark skin and white painted had been smeared in lines on either side of his face. He grinned down at me wickedly.
I tried to knock him off as I struggled to breathe. I found a rhythm that barely got me enough air, but was shallow enough that it looked like he was doing well. I pretended to go limp from lack of air. He let go and the shock of my next breath was almost enough to make my vision go black.
I closed my eyes, trying to keep up the act of being unconscious. The fighting had stopped and I wished I dared to look. I felt ropes being tied around my hands. It felt thin and flimsy compared to the ropes Raven had used.
"Rook!" I heard Edward shout.
Someone picked me up and slung me over their shoulder. My hands rested on their back. I opened my eyes and carefully looked back. Edward was tangled in a net, which he was trying to cut off, and Raven looked like he'd been knocked out.
Edward was watching me. I waved and gave him the thumbs up. He didn't look any less worried but I saw a small smile appear on his face.
