Chapter 13

The media has: Altair, a Halo guy, a cowboy (duh XD I don't know who it is), and Lara Croft.

Edward was giving me a lecture that I really wasn't paying any attention to. I was more focused on the plateful of cookies I'd managed to get from the kitchen. Edward hadn't even noticed them yet, which was probably good, seeing as I'd eaten almost all of them.

"-dering off," Edward finished with a pointed glare.

I bit a chunk out of another cookie. "I'm sorry, what was that?"

Edward stared at me in astonishment. "Weren't you listening at all?!"

I shook my head and finished the cookie, picking up the next one. "Not really. I heard something about 'dering off' otherwise I missed it."

Edward looked exasperated. "And where on earth did you find cookies?"

"Jack gave them to me." I finished another cookie. "It was piled high when I got it and I'm still hungry!" I set the empty plate on Edward's desk and sat back. "I don't suppose there's food anywhere else?"

Edward sighed. "I'll see," he huffed walking out the door.

Raven smiled at me in amusement. "You're going to regret those cookies later."

I licked the crumbs off my fingers. "I never regret cookies." I paused. "Or cake. Or chocolate. Or-"

Raven held up a hand. "Anything sweet."

   I stopped. "Pretty much."

   "That doesn't surprise me."

Edward came back and announced to things. First, that there wasn't any more food that I could eat that wouldn't be needed and second, that he and the crew were going to bed.

Raven and I left Edward's cabin. Only after the door had closed did I remember that I'd left the plate on his desk. I resolved to get it tomorrow.

"I'm going for a walk," I announced, marching to the prow of the ship. "Coming Raven?"

Raven shook his head. "I'd love to, but I have some things I need to do."

   I shrugged. "Your loss."

I jumped off the Jackdaw and landed in a crouch. I was going to find something to eat, whether anyone wanted me to or not.

I started back toward the tavern Edward had taken us to. For the first time I noticed a battered looking sign hanging from the railing that said The Old Avery Tavern. I smiled slightly and silently climbed the stairs.

There were pirates passed out in many odd places, the floor, chairs, tables, the counter, I even had to step over one on my way up the stairs. Anne was washing the counter. When she reached the place the pirate was laying she shoved him off and kept cleaning.

My boots thumped against the wood. Without looking up Anne said, "We're closed. You'll 'ave to find someplace else."

"I didn't come for a drink," I said. "I came to see if you knew of anywhere I could get a cake."

Anne looked up and beamed. "Rook! I thought you were someone else. Come into the light where I can see you better."

I walked over, stepping over the pirate Anne had shoved off the counter, who was somehow still sleeping, and sat down. "I didn't think it was that dark over there."

"It ain't," Anne said. "But those robes of yours almost don't exist in the shadows. Could hardly even see your face."

   "About that cake..."

Anne laughed. "What do you need this cake fer?"

"I'm starving to death and oddly enough, tired. I need cake to give me energy." I fingered the edge of my hood. "I ate an entire platter of cookies on the Jackdaw. That didn't help as you probably guessed."

Anne stopped cleaning and thought for a moment. "I can take you to my friend's house. She makes excellent cakes and she probably has one on hand."

"Thank you," I said, following her back down the stairs. "I haven't needed to eat this much sugar in a while."

Anne laughed. "Don't feel bad about being tired. Everyone sleeps."

"Hmm..." I wondered if I should tell her about my not needing to sleep but was saved by a door opening.

"Ahoy Anne!" someone called. "And is that Rook as well?"

I turned and saw Mary leaning against an open door. "Hello James!" I called back.

Anne looked at me curiously. "You know her?"

I smiled. "I may have only been here a couple of days, but I do get around well." I raised my voice so Mary could here me as we crossed the street. "Anne told me you make cake. Have you got one now?"

Mary laughed and held the door open for us. "I do. Midnight Star is always needing cakes for his energy. I assume you're the same."

"I'm assuming so as well," I said. "Even though I have no idea what you're talking about."

Mary closed the door and looked at Anne's confused expression. "We'll explain everything in a minute."

"No," I corrected. "Mary will explain and I'll eat an entire cake."

Anne smiled. "Did Midnight Star ever eat that much cake?"

"Not usually," Mary said, leading us into the kitchen. "He almost never ate a whole one unless he'd run across the ocean."

That thought made me grin like a little kid. "Run on the water? Could I do that?"

Mary smiled and handed me a cake. "I don't doubt it. You're faster than he is."

I ate my cake and listened to Mary with half a ear. The other half was musing about running on water.
