Chapter 11

"You need to tell me what happened on that boat!" Edward shouted angrily.

We were in the captain's cabin on the Jackdaw. Edward was standing, I was sitting in the chair, and Raven was laying on the bed. All of the peaceful enjoyment I'd had with Raven was gone.

"What time?" I asked with frustration equal to Edward's. "The first time or the second time?"

"Every blasted minute!" Edward pounded the table. "I asked you to tell me when you first got on board but you just happened to wiggle out. I want answers. Now!"

"Fine!" I crossed my arms and glared at him silently.

"By golly lass! You're more stubborn than Kidd!" Edward sat down and glared back. "What happened on that boat?"

"I scraped a hole in the stern." The glaring contest continued.

"Surely they locked you up though?" More glaring, and silence.

"They did. The bars were a foot and a half apart. I got out, got my weapons and started scraping the hole. Simple as that. Nothing else to tell."

"And the second time?" Our glaring still hadn't stopped, and the silence came once again.

   "I killed everybody."

Edward slapped his forehead. "I know that! That was obvious!"

"Hmph," I grunted and tipped my chair back a little bit, holding myself up with my legs.

"You're lucky I don't just come over there and tip you over," Edward said with another glare.

I quickly leaned my chair back to all four of its legs. We sat in tense silence until someone knocked on the door.

Edward stopped glaring at me and looked at the door. "What is it?"

The door opened and one of the crew came in. "We've reached Nassau, Captain."

"Good," Edward shot me one last withering look before he stood up and headed for the door.

I glared at the door after it slammed shut. "I don't like answering questions," I muttered.

"He just wants to know what you did," Raven said from the bed. "I do too, but I think I already figured it out."

   "That's nice," I huffed.

Raven laughed quietly. "You're a lot like I was at first. Quick to learn. but short tempered whenever questions come along."

I picked up a large paperweight and studied it. "It must have something to do with our power. I'm starting to feel more short tempered with every passing day." I set the paperweight down and looked over at Raven.

Raven frowned at me. "That's not good."

"What do you mean it's not good?" I asked nervously.

"I mean that your power is starting to take over. When that happens, you get very powerful very quickly, but you also start to lose control of yourself."

Him saying that made me worried about using my power. "Will I lose control faster if I use my power? How can I stop it?"

"You can't stop it, and trying to not use your power is like trying to not breathe. Even right now you're using some of your power."

"What am I doing?" My worry changed to curiosity. Forget worrying about what was going to happen, I wanted to know what was happening

"You're using your good hearing and eyesight," Raven said. "That's something you can't stop using. Ever. It's permanently activated."

"Isn't there any way to keep being myself and not my magic?" I asked desperately. "Surely you did something!"

"You must first unleash the power, in order to control it," Raven said. "You'll understand when the time is right."

I snorted. "Control is only the illusion of strength, trust me on that."

Raven smiled slightly. "My point is proven. The normal Rook most likely wouldn't have said that."

I didn't respond to that. I knew he was right.

The door opened and Edward stood in the doorway. "We're docked. Come on."

Raven and I followed Edward to the bowsprit. He led the way down to the beach and watched as Raven and I jumped off.

"I'm going to introduce you to some friends," Edward said, leading the way through the town to a small tavern. "James probably won't be around, but you've met him already."

I trailed behind Edward and Raven when they started up the stairs. When I reached the top I hesitated. I didn't fit in with anyone here, except for Raven.

Raven seemed to know what I was thinking and gave me a reassuring smile. Reluctantly, I joined Edward and Raven at the bar.

"Well ain't this a sight for salty eyes!" a man in noble attire said coming up to Edward. "Look 'ere lads! If it isn't old Kenway 'imself!"

"Welcome back mate," a pirate with a large black beard said, nodding to Edward. "And who are the two you've got with ye?"

Edward smirked at the two men. "This is Raven and Rook," he said. "Raven, Rook, meet Ed Thatch and Ben Hornigold."

I narrowed my eyes at the two. "A pleasure to meet you."

Ben raised an eyebrow at Edward. "Seems you've found yourself a suspicious lass Kenway."

I glared at him. "I'm not his lass," I growled. "I'm his apprentice. There's a difference."

Ed laughed, making me like him a great deal more than Ben. "Watch yer tongue Hornigold! Might just get it cut off."

   "She wouldn't," Ben said.

I narrowed my eyes at him and touched the hilt of my left sword. "I wouldn't be so sure."

"Rook," Edward said quietly. "Maybe you should stop talking."

I smirked at him. "It would be my pleasure." I turned and walked to the edge of the raised balcony.

A woman with bright red hair walked up behind me. "Can I get you anything?"

I turned my head to look at her. "No thank you." I turned back and rested my arms on the railing.

The woman came to my side. She looked like she was going to pop out of her dress. "You're not from around here are you?" She had a pleasant Irish accent and a warm smile.

"No. I'm from London," I sighed and looked out to the ocean, squinting into the sun. I could just barely see the black flag that flapped above the Jackdaw's highest mast. "Edward brought me here for training, but it was rather short lived."

"Why was it short lived?" she seemed genuinely interested, not just asking to make polite conversation.

I smiled at her. "Apparently I have a knack for weapons. Even if I've never seen it in my life." I touched the black and silver bracers that held my hidden blades.

The woman was silent for a moment before she spoke again. "I'm Anne Bonny. Who are you?"

"Rook," I paused. I didn't dare say my true last name. "Rook Drake."

"A pleasure to meet you Rook," Anne said, smiling.

I smiled back. I wanted to tell her about my power, but I wasn't sure that was wise.

Someone shouted from across the tavern and Anne rolled her eyes. "I should get back to work. See you around Rook! May the wind blow strong in your sails."

"And to you!" I called after her.

A flicker of movement caught my attention. I looked over in time to see a hooded figure duck behind a house. I glanced back at Edward and Raven, who were still deep in conversation with Ed and Ben. Surely they wouldn't notice if I went for a walk. Before I could think of a reason to stay, I started down the stairs.
