My First Robot

Advanced Robots had been created a few years ago, they looked exactly like humans and almost behaved the same. They were like ones from movies, except they weren't evil.

There had been very basic robots in the early 2000s, and slightly more advanced ones had been created in 2050, which was ten years ago. The more advanced ones, who could actually carry a conversation, had only been made four years ago.

I could've bought one last year, but I'd heard about a newer model coming out, so I'd saved up for it. All my life, I'd been dreaming of buying my very own robot. I'd watched I, Robot as a child and wanted one like Sonny. In later years, I'd read the robot books by Isaac Asimov and loved them.

Unfortunately, I hadn't been able to afford to buy a robot until last year. They were extremely expensive, but I'd managed to save enough money.

I left my house and the sun was shining as brightly as ever; it definitely matched my mood today. We didn't see much sun in Northern Ireland, so it was a great change from the usual dull, rainy days.

My heart was racing, it would be great to finally have a robot. She would be my best friend, we'd play video games together and watch movies and shows. She would never judge me or leave me either, and she wouldn't die because robots were easy to repair. My robot was going to be my best friend for life, even when newer models came out — I'd keep all the robots I bought, just like I had kept all the video games from my childhood.

I'd watched so many videos of the new models interacting with people, and it was amazing, you could barely tell that they weren't actual humans. They seemed to have a lot more personality than the older robots as well. They could eat, simulate breathing and a heartbeat, which the previous robots were unable to do. Robots didn't actually need to eat food, but it helped them fit in.

After a while, I got to the shop and went inside; there were robots standing all around. It was really cool and they were fascinating. There were Male and female robots — some had white skin, others had black and some were tanned. It seemed like most, or all races were represented, which was great. It'd be hard to pick which one I wanted, since all the female robots were friendly looking.

I looked at one of the female robots who looked quite similar to me — she had the same long blonde hair as me, her lips were small and thin like mine and her skin was a very pale white, like mine. Although, her nose was a lot bigger than my cute small one. All of the robots were slim or muscular, this one was slim, as was I.

A thin, young man with spiked up black hair walked over to me. He had extremely pale white skin, and he was wearing a long grey jacket, which had luminous blue lights around the collar and jacket sleeves.

“How can I help?” He asked.

“I want an AR55X. Uh, I think that's the name of the new model.”

“It is, there's only one left here. You're in luck.”

My eyes widened, “Oh, I hadn't realised how many people would be getting them.”

Thank God, I'd been in time to get the last one. I would've hated travelling for about an hour to get into Belfast, only to be told there were no robots left.

“Loads of people want the newest models as soon as they're out.”

They'd probably order in more of the new models soon, but they could take a few weeks to arrive. It was good that I wouldn't have to wait that long, I'd get mine now. Less and less people would want the older models soon. What would happen to their old models, then? Would they just be thrown away, or would they be donated to other people? It was sad thinking of robots being discarded even though they were working just fine.

I followed the man, and he stopped by a male robot who had dark skin and very short hair, almost bald. If he'd been a human, I would've guessed he was from Spain, Mexico or somewhere in Central or South America. He was wearing black skinny jeans, a white shirt and a black leather jacket — a very stylish outfit.

This was just great. This robot was very handsome. I'd wanted a female robot because, although women were beautiful, I was never attracted to them. It would be super awkward and embarrassing to fall for a robot who couldn't even reciprocate the feelings. But this one was the last in the store, and I didn't want to order one online and wait possibly months for it to arrive. I was too impatient — I'd wanted a robot for about twenty years now, and I wasn't prepared to wait any longer. These new robots were in high demand as well, it was now or never.

The robot could pass for a human if it hadn't been for the holographic word robot on his chest. All robots had to have the word on them when out in public so that humans could identify them. The series code was also written and it was underneath the word robot. It was probably to ensure that humans wouldn't mistake a robot for another human. Unfortunately, it led to humans attacking lone robots in some cases. It was helpful in other cases because robots were far more knowledgeable than humans, so it was much easier to get clear directions from a robot than a human. I'd often felt comfortable asking robots for help.

“I'll take him,” I said.

“Great, will you be paying by card?”

“Yep, I will,” I replied and nodded.

I got my purse out of my bag, took my card out and put it into the reader. I typed my pin in, after a few seconds it said my payment was accepted.

The man tapped the robot's forehead and put in a pin. The robot seemed more alive now because he was smiling when he'd previously had no expression.

“What do you want to name it?”

“Uh…”

I hadn't picked a name for a male robot, but he looked like a Jason to me.

“Jason,” I replied.

“My name is Jason,” The robot said in an American accent.

“You can change whatever you want with this, like accent and what you want your robot to do for you,” The man said and handed a square device to me.

“Oh, thanks.”

“Your robot, Jason, should be able to help you work the device. But, if you have any problems, don't hesitate to come back here and talk to one of the staff.”

“Thank you.”

I had to sign some paperwork before leaving.

I went outside with Jason, it would be great to find out all the things he could do.

I realised that Jason didn't even know my name, “Oh, I'm Hannah, by the way.”

“It's a pleasure to meet you,” Jason replied.

“Thanks, you too.” I smiled.

“Do you need me to drive you home?” Jason asked.

“Oh, no thanks.” I shook my head.

I'd much rather drive myself, I couldn't risk Jason malfunctioning and crashing the car, that would be awful. After all, he was the newest model, there could be any number of bugs or problems. Maybe with time I'd trust him to drive me around, but not at the moment.

Nearly all cars could drive themselves, but I never really used the self-driving option because I didn't want it malfunctioning. I much preferred having full control of my car.

I got in with Jason and started driving.

“You're my first robot, this is exciting.” I smiled.

“It's exciting for me as well.”

I frowned, “Really?”

“Yes, this is my first day in the world. I look forward to learning more about it and how I can help you.”

“Now that's put pressure on me, your first day has to be amazing.”

“Don't worry, I'll do whatever you want,” Jason said.

It was amazing how human Jason seemed, he spoke just like a human and looked like one too. Were all the other robots as good as this?

“Maybe I'll just let you get settled in first. Tomorrow we could go to the zoo or something.”

“That's a good idea, I like your thinking.”

“Oh, thanks.” I smiled. “When we get home we can play video games and watch things, I'll let you pick.”

“It's your decision.”

I giggled, “But I want you to pick.”

“But I'm supposed to listen to you and do whatever you ask. I don't make decisions.” Jason shook his head.

He was probably programmed that way for safety reasons, it was unfortunate and showed his robot side more. A bit of free will would be good; obviously robots couldn't be allowed to do whatever they wanted, but picking minor things would be good.

“I could pick out a few that I'm happy to watch, then you can select one.”

“I'll try,” he replied.

“But, before that, I'll have to show you round the house.”

“I'm looking forward to seeing it.”

“Oh good. You don't sleep, do you?” I asked with a frown.

“I can mimic sleep, but I don't need to sleep.”

“What about charging?” Maybe he was like a phone which needed to be charged each night.

“No, you don't need to worry about that either.”

“That's handy. I should've researched this shit before buying a robot.” I sighed.

“It's fine. I'm happy to answer any questions you have,” Jason replied with a perfect smile.

“Thanks. Where were you built?”

“In the robot manufacturing plant in London. Then I was shipped over here, and now I'm with you.”

“So, you're English but have an American accent.” I laughed. It was odd that he hadn't had a default English, Irish or Northern Irish accent since he'd come from England and I was living in Northern Ireland. Maybe an American accent was the default for all the robots.

“Yes, I can change it if you wish.”

“Alright, let's go through a few,” I replied.

“This is a scouse accent. Do you like it, or would you prefer a different accent?” Jason asked.

“I like it, but let's try some more.”

“As you wish. Here's a Spanish accent. There are a lot than we can try. What do you think of this accent?”

The Spanish accent made Jason even more sexy and I couldn't be having that. He could never love me, so there was no point in developing romantic feelings for him. Plus, my friends and family would think I was a weirdo if I dated a robot. It would be much better to have Jason as a best friend, as I had originally intended for my robot.

In some countries, they had sex bots who would do whatever was asked of them, and they were often working in strip clubs and other establishments. Those robots seemed creepy and it was very degrading. The people who used them only wanted them for sex, nothing more. Maybe they'd end up replacing real people, which would be awful for people who had jobs within the sex and stripping industry.

“Uh, let's hear a few more,” I replied.

“This is the Irish one. There are still many more if you don't like it,” Jason said. It was very sexy, just like the Spanish accent.

“Uh, let's try others.”

“Here's one you should be familiar with, Northern Irish. Do you prefer it?” Jason asked, and the chavy accent made me cringe.

It wasn't a nice Northern Irish accent, even though we had some lovely accents. That one was just awful to hear; it reminded me of thugs.

“Nope, definitely not that accent.” I shook my head.

Jason spoke in many different accents, from Russian, Australian and French, which were all far too sexy for my liking.

“I think I like the American accent the best. It's the accent you had when we first met, anyway.”

His American accent was attractive, but nowhere near as sexy as the other accents he'd done. Maybe I didn't find it as attractive because I heard it on TV all the time, so I was used to it.

“I'll keep the American accent, then. Unless you tell me otherwise,” Jason replied.

“Thanks. Which accent did you like the best?”

“Oh, I couldn't say. It was fun trying out all of them.”

“It was. You'd be the best at doing different accents if there was a competition for it.”

“I don't think robots would be allowed to enter it. We'd be too good at the different accents.”

“I suppose that's true.”

Robots were superior to humans in many ways — they were stronger, faster, smarter and a lot harder to kill. The only thing they lacked were emotions and feelings. Maybe in a few years there'd be even better robots who could emulate human emotions.

“What's your job?” Jason asked.

That was so cool, Jason was actually able to ask me questions. It was so exciting finding out new things about him every minute.

“I'm a digital designer, so I make things like logos, websites, book covers, banners, that sort of thing.”

“Very cool. So, you're already into technology.”

“Oh, definitely. I've even wanted a robot since I was a child. Watching I, Robot really made me want one. I loved Sonny, he was so cool,” I replied with a smile.

“Oh, that's a great movie. But, I'm surprised it made you want a robot, a lot of them are seemingly bad.”

“Most are in that movie, but before they turned bad they were so cool… I guess I've always wanted a friend who will always be there for me. I was bullied a lot at school and a bit of a loner.” I sighed.

“You'll never be alone again, not now that I'm around,” Jason said and patted my knee gently.

“Thank you… wait, you've seen I, Robot? I thought you only started properly functioning today.” I frowned.

“You're correct, I only started functioning today. There is information on thousands of movies stored within my database.”

“Aww, that means you'll know the outcome of any movie we watch,” I said and sighed.

“I would still be happy to watch them with you. I know what happens in the movies, but I haven't fully visualised them, and I'm sure there are details missing.”

“Okay, we'll watch a few movies, then.”

“I think I would enjoy that.”

“Well, I hope you will.”

We finally got to Ballycastle, where I lived. It was a beautiful small town, with the best fish and chip shop I'd ever been to. The beach was glorious, but there were small stones in the water which hurt my feet. The waves could be very rough at times as well, but that was when it was best to visit the Devil's Churn. It was a small cave, with seawater at the bottom, and when the water came in, there was what looked like a small whirlpool. When there were massive waves the water splashed up ferociously, but when it was calm, you could go down and walk around.

“This is a nice area,” Jason said.

“I know, I love this place. It's where I live.”

We got to my house, which was reasonably big and had a bright-green lawn and a few flowers around the garden. The walls of the house were white and the roof was pitch black. I'd lived here since I'd started earning more money from my job. My parents had always taken me on holiday to ballycastle, so it had always been like a second home to me.

“Your house looks fantastic,” Jason said and smiled.

“Thanks, I love it.”

I parked the car, got out, and went into my house with Jason. I was excited to spend the day with him and get to know him.
