Ch.9: Return to Familiar Territory(?)

(There's really not much I can work with during the early parts of the game, I'm starting to realize that as I'm going through this. Enjoy the semi-frequent uploads due to that because they won't last.)

Despite all my efforts, despite my prayers and despite my conflicting emotions, my eyes unconsciously wished to escape the grim reality I was trapped in. This, sadly, only shoved my mind into an even darker area, my existence falling down in an endless abyss.

Today, just like the ones before, I had a terrible nightmare. A scenery that only left horrible emotions behind.

Y/N: ...

I was completely silent, clutching my chest tightly while feeling my legs quivering in fear. I was desperately fighting my own mind screaming at me to escape. My eyes were well adjusted to the darkness of the room I was trapped in, which allowed me to see the shape of the one keeping me here against my will.

I was back in that pitch black room, barely illuminated by a fake lantern and nothing else. No windows and no sunlight coming from the only escape out of this isolated prison, just an atificial light and nothing else.

"You don't plan on giving up, do you?"

The voice belonging to the one holding me inside asked with a slight annoyance, clearly displeased by my persistence. The cards were stacked against me, yet I still pushed forward, hoping that one day it would succeed.

I quietly reignited my fighting spirit, trying my best to ignore the sad state of my body. I was famished, dehydrated and also bruised from my previous escape attempts, my bloodied fingernail being the poor victims of said tries.

Y/N: Let me out...

I whispered in return as I adjusted my feeble fists, ready to fight once more. An audible sigh escaped my interlocutor's lips, which was followed by their body moving into a battle stance. I gulped down the saliva stuck in my throat during this conversation and focused on the silhouette in front of me.

I have to win.

Immediately and with no warnings whatsoever, a flying kick was sent towards my face. Out of instinct, my body dropped to the floor before pushing me back on my feet. The first attack took me off guard but it wouldn't work a second time.

Without a moment of hesitation, I charged at my opponent and swung a weak jab at the shadow standing in my way. Upon landing my hit, my eyes slowly widened. I knew for certain that what I touched was their body, or at least their body underneath a layer of clothes. Yet, the recoil felt like I struck a wall of brick at full force.

Y/N: ...

I took a step back in horror, feeling like my hand was on fire. My target was unmoving, simply observing my reaction before a single word questioned my action.

"Done?"

Y/N: ...I'm not giving up.

I was barely able to complete the sentence I said, swiftly dodging a punch aiming directly for my torso. Out of panic, I rolled out of the way and fell directly next to the lantern laying on the floor. My eyes quickly locked onto it and soon enough, my left hand grabbed the item like it was a throwing weapon.

Completely unfazed by my rather odd decision, my attacker simply destroyed my composure by swinging a perfect kick directly into the object, shattering it and snuffing out the lone light illuminating this place. I blinked once out of fright, a blink that was not left unpunished by my captor.

The next moment, I fell down on my knees, clutching my right side after receiving a hit. Just like last time, a single attack was enough to make me collapse. It felt like I collided with a moving vehicle. A gasp slipped through my breathings as I desperately tried to stand back on my feet. Everything was happening like the previous time, nothing was different.

"Give up."

Was this really the only way? To just surrender and remain forever in this void, without ever knowing the sunlight waiting for me? I wanted to protest, scream that I was allowed to see what was on the other side but the words never came out, my energy was insufficient.

Slowly, my hand reached for the floor around me, hoping to take hold of one of the fragments scattered around when my kidnapper broke the lantern. With some luck, I could turn it into a crude knife. Thankfully, with the darkness surrounding us, my action went unnoticed.

Y/N: You can't keep me here.

"Of course not, I don't want you getting sick."

Y/N: Then-

"Maybe in a few years."

Whoever they were, they definitely had a few screws loose in the head. I let out a loud noise of indignation and successfully took hold of what seemed to be a sharp piece of glass. Now that I stop to think about it, why would they leave something like glass to a prisoner? That doesn't make any sense.

Unless...

Y/N: Why did you leave that lantern?

"..."

No response, as expected. Now in possession of a makeshift weapon, I took a deep breath and lunged at my opponent, feeling small glass shards digging into my skin. Then, as if knowing what was happening, my assault ended abruptly with a stern fist making contact with my face, sending me in the wall behind me.

I was unable to move the moment my body made contact with the floor below me. My skin felt like it was made out of porcelain, ready to shatter at any moment. Now bleeding from one hand in addition to the bruises I received, my weakened body was practically begging me to pull the plug.

My breathing was erratic and my movements sluggish. I was completely powerless against the threat i was facing. The realization was enough to make me chuckle, a weak and coarse laugh born purely out of the despair I was feeling.

The gaze locked onto me was indifferent, completely unaffected by my sudden laughter echoing in this dark room we were both in. With that last bit of energy slipping out of my throat, I leaned against the wall behind me, hoping that my body would sink into the ground, falling deeper in an endless ocean that my eyes could not perceive.

Sinking down to the bottom of the world, dragged by the weight of my emotions.

Finally, and mostly as a final call for help, I mumbled a few words under my breath. I don't know if whoever was holding me here against my will heard it and honestly, I was past the point of caring.

Y/N: Someone, get me out of here.

A long silence followed my prayer.

Y/N: ...Figured as much.

I rolled my eyes and glanced at the pitch black floor under me, aware that no god existed in this terrible world. Nobody would save me, no matter how hard I begged. The air grew cold and slowly but surely, my eyes closed, accepting my grim fate.

"Please raise your head."

Y/N: ...

For a moment, my heart stopped. I was confronted with a voice that I have not heard before. Its words sounded way too different compared to my kidnapper's, causing my eyes to open abruptly. Sadly, in this darkness that my body seemed unable to adjust to, I couldn't look at my surroundings.

"One must have the strength and willpower to break through the obstacles in the way."

Suddenly, a spark broke the persisting lack of illumination, a faint fragment of hope shining in my vision. The sight left me flabbergasted for a moment, someone was clashing with the one possessing an overwhelming advantage against me.

This small shard of light soon grew like a flame, breaking the impenetrable wall blocking my view. I tried to stand up but my body immediately shunned that idea, my bruised side felt like it was on fire.

Y/N: Tch... Come on, get up you fucking dumbass.

Fueled with anger at my own weak body, I endured the pain I was experiencing and slowly managed to stand back on my feet after a few failed attempts. During that time, a grand duel was occuring in the now illuminated room, a fight between people I didn't know.

However, this quickly changed once my eyes landed on the duelists. Now that the darkness was pushed into the far corners on this horrible prison, my gaze was successfully able to observe the both of them.

...

"Just like how one must have a strong will to cut their own wrist."

Standing in the way between my opponent and I was a tall humanoid monstrosity entirely composed of blood and reddish skin. Despite its lack of feet and hands, the entity was able to block the attacks aimed in its direction with ease. The sight left me completely silent out of shock until its head turned around, which revealed the complete lack of a visage. Instead, a dark hole that allowed no light to peek inside was present.

Y/N: ...Bloodbath?

I weakly whispered out of confusion. As those words emerged from my mouth, I was hit by a sudden nausea. I could feel the colors vanish from my face at an alarming rate as I felt my heart completely stop for a few seconds. Then, just like a passing wind, my vitality returned, leaving only a lingering vertigo behind.

"..."

Facing against this abomination, the one who remained in the darkness until now was completely silent. The only advantage they had was gone.

With a cold sweat running down my face, I hurriedly scanned the one who put me through so much trouble. The first thing that caught my eye was their long, crimson hair, swaying around like a passing breeze. They wore a completely black outfit that my hazy mind had difficulties describing.

Finally, their face. To my surprise, it possessed the same anomaly as Bloodbath's: a black void blocking the light all around us.

Y/N: ...What the-

"I told you to give up."

A frigid atmosphere soon formed us, sending shivers down my spine. Bloodbath, on the other hand, was completely still and unaffected by the situation.

"Y/N."

Y/N: E-Eh?

"You need to get out."

No shit, that's why I've been trying to do all this time. I stopped myself from responding with those words and averted my focus to the door behind our enemy. The only thing I had to do was to force it open. Once that was done, I would be met with light.

But how? I've tried so many times before, I'm just not strong enough.

Y/N: ...

My body was battered, it was clear as day that I stood no chance. Only a fool would think that I could break open a door in my current state. On the other hand, my unexpected helper was still in top shape.

...But at the same time, they were busy dealing with the faceless being confronting us. I had to think of a solution and quick.

Y/N: Mh...

The door looked pretty fragile in its current form, the kicks and punches thrown by me definitely did a good job at weakening it. However, it was currently guarded, dropping our chances to escape to 0.

Trying to run to it and hit it would leave me completely vulnerable. So, in the best scenario, I would have to charge into it with enough speed to break it immediately. Unfortunately, running blindly into battle was basically suicide at this point.

...Wait, I'm dumb, the solution is right there. It was so obvious that I felt embarrassed for not seeing it the moment my eyes landed on the door.

Y/N: Bloodbath.

Its head turned in my direction. Without a moment of hesitation, I dragged my feet and jumped into its arms. Out of instinct, the abnormality grabbed me to the best of its abilities and stared at my pathetic self. My only response was to point at the door.

Y/N: Throw me, I'm breaking through it at any cost.

It was a dumb idea, I have to admit. However, it was the only good one we had considering that I was not in a good enough condition to deal serious damage to the door. Bloodbath was also busy dealing with our other issue so I couldn't rely on it.

If I get thrown at enough speed, I should be able to go through it.

"Even to this day, you still impress me."

A faint female voice echoed from the endless hole serving as the monstrosity's face, a very familiar voice. A faint smile made its way to my face and before I know it, my body was raised, ready to be used as a cannonball.

"...This is suicide."

The entity with crimson hair mumbled to itself, completely dumbfounded by the ridiculous plan I made.

Y/N: "One must have the strength and willpower to break through the obstacles in the way."

I flashed my captor a feeble grin and flipped them off just in time. The second afterwards, the air around me screeched. My body flew across the room with enough speed to make vertigo gain its own vertigo, making me even more disoriented. The distance between me and our goal was shortening at an alarming rate, barely giving me enough time to cover my head.

Then finally-

Crack.

The wood broke.

...

Y/N: Ow ow ow, damn it, it hurts.

The adrenaline soon kicked in, giving me the energy needed to jump back on my feet. One thing was certain though, as stupid as my idea was, it worked. All around me, pieces of what was once a door were completely motionless.

I blinked once out of shock and looked down at my body. To my surprise, I was met with clothes that were imposed on me the moment I woke up in the Library for the first time, completely undamaged after my body broke through the obstacle.

"Y/N, get out!"

Unfortunately, my moment of respite came to an abrupt end. I swiftly turned around just in time to see the red figure of the monster who threw me outside of my prison get torn apart, limbs ripped off like they were made out of paper. My blood froze at the sight, unlike my body. With no hesitation, I turned around and sprinted as fast as my legs could.

The only thing in front of me was a large corridor barely lit with a few lights every now and then. The ending was nowhere in sight but that was the least of my concerns. My only priority was to get as much distance as possible from that terrible room.

Tap tap tap tap.

The faint footsteps echoed in my eardums along with screams that surpassed what one would consider "high-pitched". It was a feral cry that was beyond human comprehension, forcing my body to produce an even high amount of adrenaline out of fear.

My nerves were numb, my throat was completely dry and my lungs were collapsing but I still ran, ignoring the many cries my body tried to give me. My biggest fear right now was to stop and get caught by whatever is making this horrible noise.

The world around me flew by so fast that my eyes would definitely not be able to process the information if they weren't drugged by my own survival instinct, turning off every worthless functions of my body just to maintain the distance I had between my pursuer and I.

However, no matter how fast one can analyze their surroundings, the outcome does not change if the path is hidden in the darkness. Between each lights, I was basically running a test of chance to determine if my story would come to an end or not. Fate simply rolled the dice, again and again, until one would fail... an inevitable outcome. After all, one's luck cannot remain constant in this god forsaken world.

Y/N: ..!

After leaving the safety of one of the few lights hanging above me, my body violently met a wall, sending me forward along with whatever was in my path. At the speed I was going, a single mistake like this could not be recovered. As a proof of that statement, my body ungraciously collapsed on the floor.

I wanted to take a look and see if I got injured during the fall but with that thing chasing after me, doing so would sign my death sentence. My eyes looked in front of me and with the faint help of the next light, I was able to recognize the shape of a book in front of me. Did I run into a bookcase?

Out of curiosity, I grabbed the book and stood back up, ready to go back to my sprint. I couldn't properly explain why I took it, something was compelling me to do so and with my current mind basically going into auto-pilot, my body simply acted on its own.

This single incident was the warning before the true ordeal. With each passing light, new obstacles began to appear in my way, ranging from lone furnitures to entire piles of books laying on the floor. Sweats ran down my face as I desperately slipped between the objects.

A scream that could only be described as demonic resonated in the endless hallway just as I jumped above a desk that blocked the entirety of the path. Then, it was a bunch of weapons stabbed in the ground, which was followed by a corpse laying on the floor. I wanted to take a better look but my body screamed at me to keep running unless my wish was to end up like them.

Slowly but surely, the once completely empty corridor began to be overrun by objects that did not fit in the slightest. As I realize that fact, my legs took a small boost and allowed me to jump on top of a completely ravaged bed, allowing me to then land on a floating chair.

The logic of this nightmarish realm was breaking apart but it didn't matter. Everything was pointless to me, relationships, goals, memories. All that mattered to me right now was to get out and never look back, never slowing down for a moment.

Those were the words I spoke to myself as I began to run on the left wall in order to avoid landing on a pile of sharp and rusty junk scattered on the floor below me. All for the sake of survival, all for survival. I landed back on the floor and rolled around to minimize the damage done to my ankles before resuming my run.

Y/N: Ah... ah.. ah...

I dashed under a part of the ceiling collapsing and stood back on my feet with relief sparkling in my eyes. Indeed, hidden behind this piece of the hallway I was trapped, was a wall of pure light greeting. It was the end, the exit.

With no hesitation, I rushed through the blinding light, faintly hearing the scream of the beast chasing me for one last time, calling my name in a voice capable of causing my soul to experience true terror.

...

Roland: Hm? Do you need something Y/N?

I stood still, facing the man dressed in a suit, who returned my gaze with visible confusion. My entire body was on fire, I couldn't think straight. I tried to speak but words wouldn't come out, deep breaths were replacing each syllables I tried to mutter.

Angela was sat next to him, looking at me with her book in hand. She was also expressing a certain level of surprise and curiosity concerning my sudden appearance.

Roland: Woah, your face is pale, almost close to lady Angela's.

Y/N: ...

Sweats ran down my face like rain. I felt dizzy, I wanted to puke but my adrenaline stopped all functions related to that, all for the sake of survival. My legs were trembling and my arms were pressed against my chest, tightly holding a certain book. My sight was blurry and my breathing could not be calmed down no matter how many times I tried.

Without a word, I glanced over my shoulder, only to see a regular hallway of the Library, no monster chasing after me and no endless corridor that seem to extend forever. The moment I realized that, my survival instinct turned off along with the previously mentioned adrenaline, causing everything that was suppressed to emerge at full force.

All the stress, all the pain, all the exhaustion... I was crushed under under all of those things at once.

Y/N: Ah... ah...

Angela: Y/N?

A slight frown formed on her face as she called my name. However, it was not out or anger or annoyance but concern.

Y/N: Ah... ahh...

Panic shattered my mind, now able to express its accumulated distress after so long. My voice broke as I screamed at the top of my lungs, letting out the fear that nightmare instilled in me. Immediately afterwards, I looked down and let out the content of my stomach on the floor as my legs continued to quiver.

I broke down under the strain. My bones felt like they were shattered into puzzle pieces, my muscles were torn after removing the limiters on my body in order to sprint at full speed and my mental state was in a catatonic state. Every emotions passed through me as I continued to throw up, hearing the voices of the duo in the room faintly in my ringing ears.

My throat was burning from all the acid I puked. I wanted to speak, attempt to say even a single word but nothing but cries of desperation came out along with tears. Finally, after this disgraceful display, my energy reached the lowest and my body collapsed.

Roland: Hey Y/N!

Angela: Y/N!

As my mind shut down, I was able to hear something that I didn't expect to hear. It was genuine panic in a certain AI's voice, expressing her confusion out loud with no restraint. Still clutching onto the book in my hands, the tears of fright were the only thing I felt before everything turned black.
