Ch.39: Fairy Festival
Y/N: What... What is this?
Those words were said with a tone filled with dread as the librarians set foot into the perfect world made for the Abnormality they were going to confront. The blade held by the director's assistant wavered slightly upon seeing what greeted them.
When they were told what they would fight, the Fairy Festival, the mind of the ex-captain went back to the small & chubby fairies that would playfully float around him and the other employees. A part of him felt bad about attacking something that always felt... gentle compared to the other Abnormalities.
However, that feeling of his rapidly died the instant his eyes met those belonging to what they had to suppress.
The main "fairy" opposing them was an abomination that couldn't be farther from the joyful little creatures that once were contained within L Corp.
The green body that, in the past, barely reached a tenth of an agent's height was elongated to a disturbing degree and was completely covered with both fresh and dried up blood. Its soulless eyes looked down at them like it was looking at newly brought food.
The face belonging to the former captain turned pale, quickly matching the also pallid expression plastered on Cereb's own face. The weapon belonging to Stigma Workshop trembled in the hands of Malkuth's first assistant.
Said Sephirah, on the other hand, faced the monstrosity with a smile on her face, used to facing horrible sights like this. She wore the Key page of the recently defeated Crow and held the scythe in her hands with ease.
Patchouli: A fairy... it looks much more different than the ones I know.
Finally, standing in the back, the librarian with long purple hair calmly spoke as she adjusted the outfit she wore. It was completely black and matched the look the trio named the Carnival wore.
Her calm voice quickly snapped the duo back to reality, who slowly lowered their eyes towards the sides of the massive creature.
"Fresh food."
"It's been so long..."
There, the final actors of this morbid play emerged. Just like their queen, the smaller fairies were a disgusting sight. The lower part of their bodies split into 4 thin legs that ressembled dirtied blades. Their upper parts, unfortunately, were not any better. Both small fairies were equipped with 2 pair of arms and a massive head swollen into a mass of flesh with multiple eyes & mouths screaming for food.
Both appearances were far from the kind and small fairies that were studied in the past.
The forest they were surrounded by was stained by the smell of iron and the grass was littered with small pieces of something rotting away. The trapped employee was nowhere to be seen, forcing the librarians to focus on the danger ahead of them.
Malkuth: They must have been starving in here for a while.
Cereb: To the point of eating each other?
Patchouli: It wouldn't be an unbelievable outcome.
Y/N: ...Can we move on from that?
A mix of annoyance and tension made the request coming from the director's assistant seem more imposing than he would have liked. Regardless, it was enough to make his coworkers put an end to the current topic.
With a now shared silence, all of them readied both their weapons & their hearts for what would soon happen.
The dozen of eyes belonging to the minions of the main fairy all locked onto the group opposing them.
"A familiar smell..."
"Perfect food."
The voices originating from the abominations standing at the same height as the librarians felt like an indirect attack aimed at them. They had a piercing intonation that immediately made them unnerved.
Unlike them, thankfully, the larger monstrosity remained silent.
Cereb let out a faint groan and ran ahead, followed by his allies right behind. In response, the Abnormalities did the same, followed by the main one slamming its hands against the floor. Each movement taken by it made the ground quiver.
The plan was simple: half of the librarians present would deal with the small fairies while the remaining half would keep the giant occupied. The last thing they needed was for them to be crushed by its hands.
The latter part of this strategy replied on both Angela's helper and the Sephirah of the Floor of History.
Both of them swiftly pushed past the fairies and readied their weapons in an attempt to block the large Abnormality.
With the scythe in her hands, Malkuth quickly performed a swing against the massive arm on her side, causing her target to let out an angry screech. Following that, the ex-captain brandished a chain and quickly whipped its face, shifting its focus onto him.
Unfortunately, the pressure applied to it did not last long and soon enough, the former captain was surrounded by a quickly growing shadow around him. His heart jumped alongside him as he rolled out of the way of the fairy's hand.
The eyes of the monster showed a cold fury in them. Then, with a low voice, it finally spoke.
"A familiar scent... fighting against me."
Its words brought a few sweats out of the assistant as he changed the weapon in his hands into a regular sword. As he did so, a blurry shape flew past him and landed on the ground in defeat. His eyes widened slightly from the initial shock until he recognized the horrifying shape of one of the small fairies.
Sadly, this didn't last and soon enough, the Abnormality rose back up. Even more discouraging, the wounds left on its body were slowly but noticeably closing.
Seeing this unfold immediately caused memories to resurface. The former employees knew why this was happening and it made them realize how annoying this fight would soon turn into.
Y/N: The fairies' care...
Angela's assistant hurriedly formed some distance as he mumbled those words. He soon made it back to the rest of his coworkers. While Malkuth was still looking as pristine as ever, the same couldn't be said for the remaining duo.
Both were covered with blood. Who's blood was anyone's guess, however, both of them didn't look like they were in top shape.
Patchouli: So much running... I'm going to die if I have to keep doing this...
The girl with purple hair was sweating buckets, clearly not used to moving around so much.
Cereb: They're healing each other, just like how they did with us when they were contained.
Y/N: ...It doesn't seem to be quick though, we'll probably win if we can keep this up.
Malkuth: If we can defeat them faster than they regenerate then we won't have to worry about it!
Cereb: ...So swing faster, I can do that.
Patchouli: I-I can't-
The words that the assistant out of breath wanted to say were swiftly cut by the noises coming from the small fairies. Both of them rapidly approached their location, followed by their leader.
Only a small noise of exhaustion slipped out of her lips as everyone did the same and went on the offensive.
"More meat... I need to be filled."
The queen marching in the back did not waste a moment and immediately swung one of its hands at Malkuth, who could not parry the incoming blow in time. The second an opening was made, her attacker immediately focused everything on her and sent her upward with a swipe before slamming her against the dirt.
Seeing this, the ex-captain sprinted towards his target and went for a stabbing motion with his weapon, now turned into a burning matchstick around his size. The green skin quickly darkened from the flames and the Abnormality's attention was turned towards him.
It wordlessly countered his assault with another swipe, shoving him away. Afterwards, the elongated fairy shoved its hand into its mouth. It was trying to sustain itself with the blood stuck to it.
"I need more... more more more..."
Its voice caused its underlings to let out shrill laughters, only to be quickly shut up by the assistants fighting them.
Cereb: If you're so hungry then eat your own!
With exasperation in his voice, the usually joyful worker stabbed the inflated head of the small fairy in front of him. The Stigma Workshop blade cleanly went through the flesh and forced a cry of agony out of his opponent.
His brows furrowed and, finally, as he took out the weapon from the body, he kicked the skinny abomination towards the giant one.
It struggled for a moment to get up and after it did so, a raspy breathing blocked its screams as a hand grabbed it.
Then... with not a second to beg for its miserable life, the teeth of their leader crunched its body into pieces. Blood fell from its mouth, raining down on the director's assistant laying not too far away.
The sight made everyone freeze for a second, including the remaining fairy, who looked at the death of its ally.
"...Scarred and rotten meat isn't tasty."
The pallid expression on the one closest to the main issue quickly dissipated as he realized that the gaze of the queen was on him. It reached for him with an eager look on its terrifying face.
"I must eat it... the familiar scent... so that I can never lose it..."
With no time to escape, the one assigned to no specific floor focused his thoughts and formed a shield of skin to protect him. It gave his allies time to run to his rescue and slash open the extended arm.
The first one to jump in to do so was Cereb, who was now free to focus the main danger now that his target was no more.
The stench of charred skin quickly began to overwhelm the nostrils of the librarians close enough to smell it.
Following that, Malkuth awkwardly regained her footing and went for a surprise attack in the Abnormality's blindspot. Her assault was swiftly met with agitation coming from the larger being.
Sensing the gazes of each previously mentioned librarians on itself, the starving fairy ravenously glanced in the direction of its remaining subject, who was screeching in desperation against Patchouli.
Her expression barely hid that she was out of her element. Yet, in spite of that, she tried her best to hold on.
The ever-growing hunger within the queen quickly made the Abnormality desperate but also much more reckless.
Y/N: She's going for the other fairy!
Malkuth: We have to stop her!
With a new goal in mind, the trio swiftly ran in the way of the bigger target and readied their weapons for a clash.
"Meat has to be fresh... I have to eat it before it spoils."
In response, the famished Abnormality turned its focus onto the closest "food" it could reach, with a special focus towards the director's assistant for a reason that made said assistant shiver.
However, he did not let that freeze him in place and as it reached for him, he countered with an evade before going on the offensive alongside everyone else.
As this occured, the girl with long purple hair was forced to endure both physical exhaustion alongside a mental one as she was forced to hear the high-pitched ramblings of the thing attacking her.
"I don't want to be eaten..."
"Feed me!"
"Offer your payment, we are starving!"
Patchouli: ...Completely different compared to the fairies I know.
She calmly repeated the words she said when they all set foot inside the book they were in, almost in an attempt to remember that fact. She was sweating buckets and if it weren't for the Key Page she was wearing, she would have passed out long ago, that was something she was sure of.
Like the majority of the librarians awake, she fully relied on what she was given to have the slightest chance to fight. She wasn't used to this type of battle.
Her eyes remained on the rapidly moving fairy, who reached towards her with its many arms.
Patchouli: How long... are you going to still stand...?
She asked her question between the many breaths she took, aware that the monster attempting to kill her wouldn't respond in any way that would provide an answer. What she got in response was, as expected, incoherent rambles and aggressive motions.
With yet another respiration, she swung one of the many blades hidden underneath the cloak she wore and staggered the fairy going after her.
The sight gave the girl a brief sense of victory, a moment to take a temporary breather before going back into battle.
Cereb: This is bad, she's running past us!
Y/N: Get out of the way!
Her guard began to lower the second her ears picked up the panicked voices of her colleagues, all of them yelling in her direction. She was barely able to turn to face them before their shapes was hidden by the large Abnormality running in her direction.
Her eyes widened for a second and her hands were quick to respond. Without any hesitation, she shoved the stunned fairy in the direction of the giant before gaining some distance.
Just as expected, the queen reached for the closest source of meat it could reached and completely ignored the vulnerable girl standing not too far away. Its hands immediately crushed its underling into paste and shoved the remains in its mouth.
"I've starved for so long, I can hardly resist myself..."
Cereb: We have to finish her!
Y/N: Keep going!
The trio behind soon joined her and they all aimed at the remaining Abnormality, still feasting on the remains of its last follower.
The former captain ran ahead and firmly slammed his right foot down once close enough. The blade in his hand began to transform as he went for a stabbing motion once more. The change was complete the instant he made contact with the Abnormality, revealing a sharp tentacle drawn like a doodle in his grasp.
Following after that, the duo behind swung their own weapons, hoping to finish off the last opponent.
Patchouli could only watch with quick breathings the expression of the fairy queen turn from satiated to furious.
Now that it had no allies to feast on, the only food left were them.
Y/N: ...
Cereb: ...
Malkuth: ...
...And she wasn't the only one to recognize that fact. It was now their turn to sweat bullets at what would soon unfold if they couldn't manage a victory.
Then, what followed was a trail of blood. A curtain of it flew in the air above everyone else as the air froze. The wrath of the queen without any underlings was rising and its first victim revealed itself.
Cereb: A-Ah...!
A scream was left in the throat of the assistant librarian as he watched all the blood come from a singular arm in the hand of the Abnormality... his arm.
The second he understood that, his yell doubled in volume as he collapsed to the ground. His yell was ignored by the monster, too busy feasting on the meat it salvaged.
Angela's helper gritted his teeth and tried to the best of his capabilities to ignore the painful wails of his coworker, hoping to finish the fight as soon as possible.
He ran forward, committing to the same recklessness that the Abnormality they faced had chosen for the sake of dealing with its hunger. His eyes were locked on the eyes of the monster.
...However, "eyes" soon turned into "eye". Not for him but his target. A second burst of crimson flew in the air and from the wound, the ex-worker could see a small blade in it.
"Too weak to fight... then the meat must be salvaged..."
The agony expressed by the fairy was ignored and a gleeful voice echoed within the vast forest. From it, shufflings noises could be heard until finally, something leapt at the Abnormality.
This something struck at the remaining eye of the giant, completely blinding it.
Y/N: ...What-
The librarians could immediately recognize the shape of a human grabbing onto the monster in front of them. This person was the employee they were supposed to rescue but their current state made all of them do a double take.
"If you cannot serve, then you will be a fine meal..."
The one on the fairy had large, unblinking eyes fixated on their opponent. On their back, small & glowing wings were fluttering at irregular intervals. In their hand, a blade made of a sharp tooth was soon stabbed in the neck of the abomination.
Again, again, again, again & again.
It continued until finally, they were thrown to the ground, landing right beside the librarians. Their gaze turned in their direction, revealing a wide smile of satisfaction.
"Thanks for the help, I wouldn't have finished it myself..."
Before anyone could raise their voice, the employee charged at the blinded foe and raised his arms, revealing sharp teeth poking out of the dried up blood and dirt attached to his sleeves.
With swift movements, the worker dashed back and forth around the fairy, cutting it apart and letting it bleed out with each swings it took in an attempt to counter-attack.
The surprise of everything that happened in the blink of a second made Cereb's pain subside briefly. His own mind couldn't keep up and so stopped focusing on his missing arm out of sheer confusion.
In the matter of a few hits, what was once an ordeal turned into a macabre fountain. The blood had run out and so did its life.
Its body combusted into golden pages, leaving the one with wings on their back standing still.
Then, they turned around and faced the group.
"Who's sharing the meat?"
...
...
Angela: Interesting, this is a first for me.
After emerging from the book of the Fairies' Festival, the director of the Library pondered on the information she was given by the librarians.
As she did so, her golden eyes lingered on the rescued employee who was surrounded by the other assistant librarians and for a good reason.
The one saved was soon discovered to be a man with short brown hair. However, that detail did not matter, or at least was minor compared to the singular bright wing attached to his back. The skin of his fingers had turned green in some places and his fingernails were much sharper than a regular human's.
Roland: What happened? Did he turn into an Abnormality? I didn't know this could happen.
Y/N: How would that be possible? There's no Co-
Angela: It looks like he resonated with the Abnormality itself. This is the first time I'm seeing something like this.
Roland: He became one with the Abnormality?
Angela: Not fully, the Library must have caused this to be possible. We should be careful, something like this might happen in the future.
Y/N: What should we do? We can't just leave him like that, right?
Angela: The process is still unknown to me. However, it doesn't seem to have affected them completely, they are still capable to talk. I'll have to look into it.
Her cold words were cut short by the sound of her fingers snapping, indicating her departure. Left with no answers, her assistant walked back to the man turned halfway into a fairy.
His eyes landed on him and for a moment, they widened like an animal's before returning to normal.
"You're Y/N, right?"
Y/N: Uh, yea. Sorry about... this.
"It's fine, they kept talking about you in there, I thought I was gonna go insane."
Y/N: ...Who?
"...Them, the fairies. They all talked about food and kept mentioning the same name... though that changed when they began starving."
Y/N: ...
A silence flew in the air as his words floated around the assistant librarians present. The new addition to the Library quietly looked at everyone present and soon realized the awkward silence and tried to break the pressure.
"Sorry. I'm... I'm... I am... hm... Butcher I guess...?"
Dana: Butcher?
A drop of sweat formed on Dana's face.
Butcher: It fits what I did to survive so far. My memory isn't that great...
Y/N: I-It's fine. It's nice to meet you.
With careful movements, the former captain reached for the hand of the librarian while carefully avoiding the sharp fingernails. They both exchanged a handshake for a moment and distanced themselves, only for the questions to resume.
Hava: So the wing's the real deal~?
Butcher: I guess so? It hurts when I pull... and I sometimes get really hungry for no reason.
Elis: A-Are we sure this is fine?
Rin: Yea, this looks serious.
Butcher: I-It tends to leave if I focus enough! I'm not gonna eat anyone!
The new assistant working under Malkuth's orders understood the suspiscions of his coworkers and tried his best to deny them. However, with the sharp fingernails attached to him, his agitation almost caused Morgan, who was silently standing in place, to lose an eye.
The barely dodged incident made Butcher devolve into an apologizing mess.
Cereb: It's fine, I'm sure we'll find a way to fix this! Miss Angela will find something.
Y/N: ...I wouldn't put too much faith in her.
Butcher: It might take me a while but I'll try to be careful.
Hava: Ha, it's fine. Plus, I'm sure the guests will freak out when they see you stroll out to greet them~
Dana: That wasn't really a compliment.
Hava: It won't if you point it out.
Dana: ...Sigh, I swear-
Dana was ready to go out on Hava, only to be interrupted by a growling noise coming from the new assistant librarian. Everything turned silent and each person present turned to face him, only to see his face turn pale.
Butcher: I-I'm fine...
No words were exchanged between everyone present but all in unison, each of them took a step back. This shared motion caused Butcher's shoulders to drop in defeat... followed by a second growl from his stomach.
Butcher: I swear I'm fine...
