Ch.33: Urban Plague
"Today, I witnessed the sight of impurity. However, instead of fearing it, I stood still, observing it with curiosity alongside the lone figure standing by."
Before I could even begin to understand what was happening to me, I could feel a gust of wind fiercely assaulting my face, forcing my eyes to open. Once I did, what I first assumed to be me simply being awoken by an annoying breeze turned out to be something much more severe.
I was falling, a genuine fall with no way to stop it. At first, I wanted to move my arms around but that idea was quickly tossed aside once I realized how fast I was going. Even if I could latch onto something, it would only result in me losing my limbs at this speed.
So, instead of letting my panic set in, I tried my best to observe my surroundings. Maybe I could get out of this somehow? It was wishful thinking but it was better than nothing.
The first thing that grabbed my attention, however, was the odd walls blocking me from a potential escape out of this problem. They were entirely made of wood, natural wood. Despite my rapid falling, I could faintly notice some details & imperfections through my blurry vision that confirmed it.
It felt like I was stuck inside of a hollow tree, plummeting to my doom.
The second point of interest I had was something that I completely ignored in the heat of the moment and didn't mention. Floating all around me, hundreds of what looked like playing cards, toys & drawings were rising into the heavens while I was doing the opposite.
Sadly, I couldn't see what was drawn on them but I highly doubt it would have helped me, even if I could.
"...I've been falling for a while, I'm starting to wonder if there's an end."
At the speed I was going, talking would only result in me biting through my tongue so I settled with mental notes to myself.
I couldn't exactly pinpoint how long I was falling for and to be honest, it didn't really matter in the grand scheme of things. What did was that realistically, I should have reached the bottom of whatever tunnel I was trapped in, or at least passed out during the fall.
Though, now that I think about it, my awakening in this situation probably meant that I had fallen for quite a while by now.
...Which only further proved my point.
With not much else to do at this point, I lowered my gaze a second time and, just like a curtain being pulled out of view, something finally emerged from within the darkness. It looked like a massive mushroom attached to the side of the tunnel, emitting a glowing light.
One other detail was that it was massive, dangerously big. It almost entirely covered the hole I was falling in and I was not spared. Trapped at terminal velocity, I couldn't even begin to widen my eyes out of shock before my body made collision with the fungus.
...
...
I'm sure, in any normal circumstances, that would have been the end. My body would have folded onto itself and turned into a puddle of blood. Yes, that would have been an abrupt end with nothing else to add to it.
However, instead of obtaining what I would assume to be a painless death from all the momentum gained, my eyes were greeted by something that definitely should not exist.
My body, who has not combusted into blood particles, slowly sank into the large mushroom like it was made of marshmallow. I fell through it and, once on the other side, I resumed my fall for a brief instant before landing on my side on a solid floor that seemingly appeared out of thin air.
I rolled around for a bit, letting out groans of pain before I finally gathered the energy to raise my head.
As I did so, I looked at my surroundings and confirmed the theory I made while I fell to what I thought would be my demise. I was completely blocked in by a circular wall made of what one would find within an untouched tree. On the other side of the circle, a door with a golden handle was almost begging me to step closer.
In the middle, a table made of the same material used for the wall towering around me was standing like a marker to indicate the exact middle of the room. On top, what looked like food and some bottles of an unknown drink were placed.
Y/N: ...Where am I?
Trying to remember anything that I could have done before falling into this hollow tree only resulted in me looking back at a hazy mist in my memories. How did I get into this situation again?
I asked myself that question before attempting to stand back on my feet. Everything looked right at first until I reached the halfway point. Once I did, an unknown scream froze me in place out of shock. It was soon followed by a sudden weight landing on my back, sending back to the ground.
I was forced to empty the content of my lungs on impact.
Something was pressing against my spine, something that I couldn't properly describe in my state. I couldn't pinpoint what it was exactly but it didn't matter, I needed to get out of this situation if I wanted to live.
With a face riddled with sweat, I closed my hands and turned them into fist before pressing them against the wooden floor and, with the remainder of my strength, I tossed myself to the left with enough speed to slip out. Fresh air quickly entered my body afterwards, allowing me to finally start processing what just happened.
...
I could still feel some chills running through my body after the uncomfortably close reunion with the grim reaper. In an attempt to calm my beating heart somewhat, I decided to look back to see what exactly tried to murder me.
However, that previous sensation abruptly melted away the moment my eyes laid on the culprit. Where I once stood, the silhouette of a girl laying still was present. Her short hair were a mess and her clothes had seen better days.
Her face showed a mix of nausea and pain as she slowly tried to move around, to no avail.
Y/N: ...Wait a minute.
I mumbled to myself as I walked closer, not taking my eyes away from her. The longer I did this, the more it felt like I was about to remember something. It was at the tip of my fingers but I just couldn't reach it.
"Ow..."
Finally in a good enough shape to sit, she let out a single word to herself while holding her head.
Just then, it finally hit me, like a hammer striking glass. A memory resurfaced, the one right before what I assumed to be our fall in hell.
Y/N: I remember you, you were that girl by that giant tree.
My voice caused the girl on the floor to raise her shoulders out of fright before looking back at me. Our eyes met and, judging from her face, the same process occured in her brain. She hurriedly stood up, allowing me to see that we had the same height.
She looked around but just like me, she quickly noticed how empty the room was and stared back at me.
"Where are we... the last thing I remember is the ground breaking and then falling."
Y/N: No idea.
I shrugged. I was just as clueless as her.
Seeing that, her eyes lowered as she began to ponder on something. I decided to let her be for now and move closer to the table I previously ignored. Just as I first saw, some... food(?) and bottles were placed on it.
However, now that I could take a better look at what was offered, my eyes were able to notice an object perfectly hidden between the bottles. Out of curiosity, I reached for it and slowly pulled it out.
It was a silver bell with nothing out of the ordinary about it. What was it doing there though? Maybe it was used to call for someone or something?
"A bell?"
Y/N: A-Ah, don't scare me like that!
I grabbed my chest in a desperate attempt to keep my soul from slipping out of my body. In an almost mocking manner, what followed was the ringing of the item I was holding.
I sent a brief glare in her direction but still showed her what I had found nonetheless.
Y/N: It doesn't look that important sadly, probably used to call some butler or something. I don't know why anyone would willingly eat inside a hollow tree of all places though.
"Maybe someone will come open the door?"
Y/N: ...Maybe.
I replied back and walked towards the locked door further away. Once close enough, I shook the object I was holding before taking a step back. Seconds pass and sadly, no signs of a saviour revealed themselves.
...However, it didn't mean that we had no response. Right as we were about to give up, the ground below us almost mimicked the shook I gave to the bell, sending us down on the floor.
The vibrations continued to grow worse, turning into a massive earthquake. The items on the table fell on the ground alongside us, showing us that it wasn't just a mere hallucination.
A bead of sweat fell down as a shiver ran down my spine. Something was terribly wrong and it didn't take a genius to figure that out. The girl next to me felt the same and held onto my sleeve for safety.
Everything kept getting blurrier until a final shook sent us into the wall behind us. I let out a groan of pain and stood up, only to freeze on the spot. The unknown girl did the same.
Standing within the round room we were in, what looked like a massive white rabbit standing on its hind legs was staring back at us with its red eyes. It wore a tattered suit that revealed bloostains through the holes seen. In one of his paws, a silver pocket watch could be heard ticking away.
"A-Ah, I remember! I was following that rabbit before it ran inside the tree."
Of course, I also remembered her doing so but as far as I could remember, I was certain that it wasn't standing on its back legs... nor was it wearing a suit or holding a watch.
It's unmoving eyes continued to look at us in silence until finally, it jumped towards us, trying to turn us into blood puddles. I widened my eyes, grabbed the girl still in shock and got us barely out of range before collapsing.
We weren't the only ones affected by its jump. The whole tree almost collapsed onto itself and sent wood dust down at us alongside some trash, mushrooms and a shining helper that descended to us like a guardian angel.
It flew down and perfectly landed onto the ground in front of me. It was a simple book with a cover that not many would pay much attention to. However, to me, its worth meant something entirely different.
This was the book I carried around in the Library, the book who had finally obtained a purpose to me.
Without any hesitation, I reached down for it and opened it to a random page. Time was not on our side and I couldn't afford to waste more of it looking for something- No, some words somewhere that would help us in this mess.
Like a genie in a bottle, my thought was heard by whoever was watching over me and, with the invisible snap of a finger, something cold made contact with my skull and pushed it backward before landing at my feet.
It didn't take me long to know what it was. It was a sword that the assistant librarians were given at their awakening, before they were given a Key Page from a defeated guest. It was also the main weapon I carried around since Angela refused to let me near said Key Pages.
"H-How did that-"
Y/N: Now's not the time. That thing's trying to kill us, we have to fight!
In the situation we were in, I was forced to take the role of the leader for our own survival. That rabbit was already glancing back at us and readying another attack.
With a book in one hand and a blade in the other, I stood my grounds against the beast that was twice our size alongside the girl standing next to me, holding her hands together in a praying manner.
My heart almost doubled in speed as the battle truly started.
https://youtu.be/q_4jXySUgLM
"Out of my way, out of my way! I can't be late, not now!"
A bead of sweat formed on my face soon after hearing the words coming from the rabbit's mouth. Despite trying to kill us in cold blood, the voice it used was in an almost panicked state, fearful of something. This only worsened the fear of the girl standing next to me.
I tightened my grasp onto my blade and charged ahead on my own. Unlike the many suppressions I had done against Abnormalities so far, the battle began with only a single fighter: me.
Considering the state the unknown girl was in plus the lack of weapon, I needed to keep a strong offensive if I wanted to keep the both of us alive.
The distance between me and the large beast grew shorter. Once close enough, I swung my blade at its leg, only to be met with air. The animal had jumped above me and landed in my back, causing the ground to quiver.
The thing trying to kill us completely ignored me and aimed for the girl standing in the back. Its speed felt like I was watching a car going at full speed, I had no chance to catch up to it. So, with the few seconds I had, I screamed to snap her out of her state.
As she did so, the shadow of the rabbit's foot grew smaller as it got closer. She hurriedly ran to the side and rolled out of the way, getting her dress dirtier than it already was.
When I knew for sure that she was still alive, I resumed my charge and swung my blade down. A faint line of red formed in its white fur, finally catching its attention.
That was, most definitely, one of the worst mistakes I could have made.
The moment its red eyes landed on me, I could feel a sense of dread overwhelm me.
Y/N: ...
Out of fear for something that had yet to occur, I focused my built up emotions and formed a barrier made of Shy look's skin. Right as it materialized into existence, the ground shook once more and with it, my feet were dragged across the floor.
On the other side of the shield I made, one of the rabbit's feet was raised in the air. If I had been a second slower... I didn't want to think about it.
One thing was certain though: its speed was something that I could barely keep up with. How are we supposed to get out of this mess if we can't even fight back?
I frowned in response to the clear lack of ideas I had. If we stayed on the defensive, it was only going to be a matter of time before we both got crushed.
The rabbit probably knew that, which explained its high aggressiveness. My frown grew deeper at that thought right as I shoved my hand through the shield that saved me, causing it to dissolve into the form of the black sword I used a moment ago.
I pushed ahead and retaliated with a slash against its suit. The blade tore a new hole into the piece of clothing, something that was immediately pushed aside by the sound of glass shattering echoing around.
The culprit soon fell from the already ruined suit that the beast wore. It was yet another pocket watch that looked similar to to the one it held.
Y/N: How many clocks does this thing carry...?
I mumbled to myself right as I watched the white bunny jump away. The girl standing in the back ran in my direction and looked at our opponent in silence before speaking up.
"What are we supposed to do?"
Y/N: Keep fighting, not much else.
I answered without averting my eyes away. The last thing I needed was a kick sent into my skull, ending my life right there.
Stomp stomp stomp.
The single enemy focused on killing us hurriedly stomped on the ground with one of its feet before charging at us once again. In response, I readied my weapon, which quickly turned into a chain.
The girl standing next to me, who still lacked a way to defend herself, remained close by and glanced at my changing weapon. I couldn't blame her for that, many would do the same in this scenario.
Both me and the tall rabbit ran towards each other. Right as we got into close proximity, I went for the first strike with a swing of the long "blunt" weapon I carried. It acted as a whip and slammed against the left leg of the animal.
The sudden impact made it unable to maintain its balance, especially due to the momentum it had. The result was not hard to predict-
"The watch, it fell!"
As she said, the pocket watch it held in its hand fell onto the ground as its head made a direction collision against the wall. It was around the size of the table that was still standing in one piece in the center of the room. However, it didn't matter much.
With a glint of hope in my eyes, I swung a second time, going against the accessory on the floor. The metallic chain made quick work of the glass protecting it and reached the mechanism, rendering it completely worthless.
Once the large beast understood what had occured, it let out a scream of genuine panic that sent shivers down my spine.
"Nonono! This can't be happening, I'll be late if I can't know the time! I don't want to die yet!"
Its red eyes locked onto us, more specifically me at this point. They were almost bloodshot at this point, not hiding the hostility they had.
"I won't die, get out of my way!"
Y/N: ...
My body unconsciously began to sweat bullets at the sight of that hatred.
The next thing I knew, yet another kick was sent my way from the large rabbit. I tried my best to get out of the way and felt the fur of the furious beast graze against the back of my neck. My heart dropped for a second but quickly got back to its duty once my body landed against the ground.
I looked behind my shoulder as I recovered from my fall and saw my attacker keep its speed and jump against the wall in its way. Then, it spun around and locked its focus on me a second time before charging ahead.
I could feel the colors in my face drain at that sight. With close to no room for error, I raised the sword I held in its direction, recreating for the second time Shy Look's face but unlike the previous attempt, the clash quickly went against me.
Every bones in my body cried in pain as I landed against the still locked door. Wood dust fell down on my head and some even slipped into my nose, leaving me in a coughing fit.
Through my squinted eyes, I could barely see the silhouette of the frightened girl looking at me in shock before looking around for something. She then ran towards the table in the center and began grabbing whatever she could reach in a hurry.
In the meantime, the enraged beast made its way towards me, only willing to calm down once my entire body had turned into a puddle.
Y/N: Not yet...
I wiped the tears forming in my eyes and awkwardly stood up, only to realize that my weapon was laying where I was struck. I had no way to defend myself.
I hurriedly looked around to find where the book that summoned the sword in the first place went. In the heat of the fight, I was forced to let go of it to free my other hand. Unfortunately, its location was unknown.
As it walked closer, the white bunny rummaged into its torn suit and pulled yet another watch from within. I was starting to think that its entire body was made of them with how many it carried.
"I'll have enough, I just need to hurry. I won't be late."
Y/N: ...
The way its eyes remained fixed on me sent shivers down my spine. Trying to run would only result in me getting sent into the air... if I was lucky.
Finally done keeping up with the time on its watch, it raised a foot aimed at my skull, showing no intentions to let me escape. Sensing my incoming death, the only thing I could do was send a prayer to whoever could hear it.
...Praying for a miracle, or at the very least a painless death.
...
...
...?
Seconds pass by but for some strange reason, nothing seemed to happen. Curiosity got the better of me and I opened one of my eyes to see what was going on. Right as I did so, a scream belonging to the white beast made me jump.
The rabbit fully turned away from me, revealing the sword I used to fight impaled in its back. I blinked once out of shock and glanced past my attacker.
There, the girl dressed in a dirty dress was holding her hands together. Her outfit, once only stained by dust, had now gained crimson stains on it. She noticed my gaze upon her, to which she replied with a yell.
"Hurry, take it!"
I nodded back and ran towards the opportunity given to me. I pulled the blade out of its body and began climbing the tall animal's back. In an almost comedic manner, a silver watch fell down on the floor, causing the rabbit to spring into action.
However, before it could even attempt to throw me off, I focused my energy into the sword in my hand, causing it to shift into a chain. I then wrapped it around its neck and held onto it like my life depended on it.
It was only twice our size but compared to a regular rabbit, I could almost call that thing a behemoth. Just thinking about that fact while riding on its back made me realize how fairy tale- like this whole ordeal was.
"I need it! I can't lose track of time, I can't!! I'll lose my head if I arrive late!"
The words it uttered went through one ear and out the other. My main focus was placed on my hands not letting go of the chain.
Past that point, everything felt like a blur to me. I faintly remembered hearing screams and experienced vibrations for what felt like an eternity. My desperation to keep holding onto the bunny made everything else feel insignificant.
Yet, no matter how much strength I applied, it still found the energy to move around and struggle. I was starting to think that it wasn't breathing in the first place.
In the distance, what sounded like the noise of glass shattering in the distance faintly told me that something was happening. This was followed by a sudden and mysterious lack of movement from the one I was strangling and as much as I would have liked to claim this to be my efforts alone, I highly doubted that it was the case..
The tall rabbit collapsed, sending me to the ground as well. I slowly got up and turned my head just in time to see the strange beast combust into golden pages, who then flew into the abyss above.
Y/N: Wait... golden pages-
"Are you alright?"
Before I could even begin formulating a thought, a hand entered my vision. It belonged to the girl who assisted me towards the end of the fight.
I took the help she offered me and got back on my feet.
Y/N: What happened to that thing? It suddenly dropped dead.
The only response I got was a shrug. It seemed like she was just as confused as I was about the fate of our attacker.
With my heart still beating to an alarming speed, I took a long glance around the circular room and witnessed the chaos left behind our battle. Broken pocket watches were laying everywhere, the walls showed signs of breaking and dust was floating in the air.
In spite of that, the one who I still didn't know the name walked past me and crouched where the beast died. She reached for something I could barely see through the annoying particles of wood assaulting my eyes.
Whatever it was, she stuffed it within a small pocket in her dress and grabbed a second object that she revealed to me. It looked like a cooper key with rust starting to form on some parts of it.
I glanced towards the locked door, which was somehow completely unharmed after everything that occured in this small space. The girl did the same and began making her way towards it.
My eyes briefly remained on her figure walking in the direction of the exit. As much as I would have liked to do the same, I did the opposite and walked towards the table in the middle. Being pushed to the limit tends to bring out one's appetite.
I took what looked like a small cake and held it in my hand for a moment.
Y/N: Better than nothing.
I whispered to myself as I took a small bite out of it... only to freeze up the second after. My stare slowly descended upon the food I was holding in my hand. My initial shock turned into genuine terror at what I saw.
The content of what looked like a regular vanilla cake spilled out and fell on the ground at my feet. Said content was not a cream, it was something much more... solid and... wriggling and... living.
What I saw was a horde of maggots drag themselves out of their baked prison, moving in an attempt to free themselves. At first, my body refused to comprehend what I saw but soon after, the realization that a piece of it was still in my mouth made my mind do a 180.
I puked on the spot. I spat, spat, spat & spat until I simply lacked the saliva to push anything out. I swung the cake I held against the floor and watched the... things burst out of it and spread.
Describing the look scarred onto my face as "ghastly" at this moment would be an understatement.
Without a single word out of me, I grabbed the remaining food and threw it all against the wall. I then reached for a bottle and looked at the label on it, showing a mere "try me" written on it.
Not trusting it for a second, I began to examine it from every corner, leading me to notice that the sticker that could be read was superposed onto a second one. With a few attempts, I was able to scratch the first label off, revealing a much more sinister truth like the cakes.
There was not a single word on the one below, simply a symbol of a skull.
"The door is open!"
Thankfully, the voice of one I could almost call an angel in this distressing moment snapped me out of this stupor. I quickly made my way over to her as I hid the bottle I grabbed within my outfit.
Come on, snap out of it, don't think about it for your own sanity.
Y/N: So, we're good to go?
"Looks like it."
...
...
Y/N: ...Thank you for helping me by the way.
"I-I didn't do much, you really shouldn't thank me."
The girl replied with a slight embarrassment on her face. Now that we finally had a moment of respite after the madness we both went though, I looked in silence at her face before raising a hand in her direction.
Y/N: I know it's a little late but... I'm Y/N.
'A little late' would be an understatement. Nonetheless, her eyes remained on the hand I offered. Her owns tensed up for a second but in the end, she took the sign of friendship and gave me a faint smile despite the clear stress on her face.
"I'm Alice."
...And, just like that, a new bond was made. With my sword in hand, I pushed the door leading outside open. My footsteps were soon followed by Alice who remained close by, looking out for a potential attacker.
However, slowly but surely... everything became once more blurry in my sight... then, the blur was overwritten by pure darkness.
Complete darkness.
...
...
Y/N: ..!
Suddenly, the eyes of Angela's assistant shot wide open. His heart was practically beating out of his chest at this point.
Confused by what was happening, he took a look around himself and was met with a sight that left him slightly speechless.
The colors on the walls immediately told him that he was located on the Floor of Art and, scattered all around the room, many people were seen passed out drunk. Cans of beers were found everywhere, to the point that it looked like a minefield.
It took him a few seconds to remember how he got himself in this situation. As far as he knew, it was an idea thrown around by some of the "eager drinkers" currently awake, both Patron AND assistant librarians, to celebrate a job well done.
He couldn't tell how long he was asleep but in the grand scheme of things, it didn't matter.
Y/N: I swear, you could easily kill someone's liver with this amount.
He mumbled to himself and stood up from the sofa he was resting on. He then reached towards the floor and grabbed the book he carried around with him before landing back in his place.
His hands quickly flipped through all the pages within, almost expecting a miracle to occur just like in the dream he had... or was it truly a dream? He couldn't tell. It felt genuinely real to him.
Y/N: ...
With not much else to do in his current situation and with what was currently occupying his mind, the exhausted ex-captain took out a pencil and did what he recently started to do, write.
On the blank pages present, the assistant librarian wrote down what was haunting his thoughts. He put every details he had about a certain white rabbit fearing time itself & a certain girl in a dirty dress, who saved him right before he met his demise.

(Alright, it took me a while to write everything up, sorry if you expected an update sooner but I wanted to make sure everything was set up. Now that we reached Urban Plague, I can finally start adding my own touch to the story.
This entire chapter was basically me showing that we've finally reached the part where I'll be able to add my own stuff into it so I hope you'll look forward to it.
...Or not, it could turn into a dumpster fire for all we know, let's not put too much faith into it.
Anyway, hope to see you for the next chapter, I'm going to bed, I'm writing this at 2 in the morning.)
