Ch.32: Child of the Galaxy
Hava: Going from killing an axe-wielding maniac to beating up a child, you sure have a lot of things to add to your list of victories~
As soon as their feet "landed" on top of an invisible, yet still present platform in the middle of a colorful galaxy that the librarians could not comprehend with their feeble minds, the girl known for her teasing remarks lightly tapped his left side with her elbow.
With still a sliver of morality weighing him down, the director's assistant let out a deep sigh and looked back at her with an unamused face.
The one with brown hair got the message but still send him a grin regardless before readying her weapon.
Standing behind them was the apathetic Sephirah that showed no signs of happiness about what they were about to do.
His eyes were watching the devil with red eyes calmly stretch herself, despite wearing a body that did not belong to her but rather a certain blond woman that was once trapped within a train alongside her colleagues.
Hava: Still, anomalous or not, it should be a good refresher for me. I don't want my instincts to get rusty.
Y/N: Instincts-?
As he asked a question that popped in his head, the sight of a small figure staring at them from far away made him stop in his track. The Abnormality they were looking for took the form of a small boy wearing a purple shirt with no sleeves and gray pants. His skin and hair perfectly matched the unreal world surrounding them.
Next to him, acting like body guards, a duo of shapeless blobs made of stars glared back at the trio.
A drop of sweat formed on the former employees' faces as they readied themselves. The time for the casual banter was coming to a close and alongside that, a few worries appeared.
One of them was a fear that quickly rose in the exhausted worker's head: "What would happen if someone were to fall into the void of space with no way to come back?"
In fact, after taking a quick glance around, his eyes were unable to find a clear limit of the area they could stand on, making him realize that they had no idea of where they could safely walk.
However, unlike him, the one who had much more experience when dealing with Abnormalities paid not a single mind to their circumstances. Her eyes briefly showed a light of excitement as her weapon yearned for blood.
Finally, the third member of the group was barely keeping the energy to remain standing. His only thought was to go back to sleep and forget about everything.
With a mix of emotions on the side of the Library, the employees braced themselves and took the lead. In return, the amalgams of shining stars rapidly slid across an unknown surface like snakes.
Seeing them in action made Angela's helper's brain get a migraine just by thinking about the logic behind it.
He let out a groan just as one of their targets approached him. Before it could do anything, the ex-captain swung his blade and broke its momentum, sending it flying in the air... or floating. The latter seemed more accurate as his eyes followed its shape going into the air, as if unaffected by gravity.
The further it went, the harder it became for him to see its shape among the many stars in the distance.
Y/N: ...It can't be that easy.
His voice faintly echoed as he slowly began to understand the mess that he got himself into. This fabricated reality, created by the crying child standing not too far away, allowed the perfect camouflage for its "friends". Now that one was out of his sight, it could come out from any angle.
The lack of a clear floor below them also made it possible for it to strike from below, nowhere was safe. His eyes quickly scanned the world around him but was only greeted by more stars than he could count.
The best he could do at this point was swinging his blade around, praying to get a lucky hit on it before it could hurt him. Unfortunately, the chances of that happening were minimal.
Not wishing to get caught standing still, his feet quickly got into motion and pulled him away from where he stood. Acting out of paranoia, his own instinct forced him to stay on the move.
Meanwhile, a certain battle maniac was swiftly dancing on the incomprehensible ground that they were standing on alongside the second abomination coming from space itself. Although the body she borrowed lacked the finesse she usually used, her old manners when it came to dealing with Abnormalities countered her new shape by a far margin.
With a downward strike, she sent the entity against the unknown piece of solid cosmos below her feet. Like a slime, its body splattered around the zone of impact but quickly reformed. The moment it did, she replied with a firm sweep of her leg before going for a second swing with her weapon.
Hava: Tch, not as useful as those E.G.Os... Oh well, I guess I'll just have to roughen you up more than I would have liked, not that you'll mind I'm sure~
Her words barely hid the joyous mood she always had during the many days that she went through within Lobotomy Corporation, no matter how gruesome the sight she saw was. "Devil" was an appropriate name attached to her.
In return, the fragment of outer space extended itself, causing the stars within its body to shine. With no warning, a barrage of lights erupted from its body, aiming directly at her.
The girl with long hair, its main target, only showed her usual grin filled with confidence as she turned herself to the side and slipped between the lasers.
...Or at least tried.
The next thing she knew, her free hand was pressed against her injured area. Between deep breaths, she let out a comment that was only aimed at her as a lesson for the future.
Hava: Next time... don't understimate the size of one's chest...
After voicing her complaint, she removed her hand, showing that the fabric underneath it had turned into a burned hole, revealing her skin where she was hit. Luckily for her, it didn't seem to have left any burn marks on her.
Acting in retaliation, she swung her weapon at her attacker. The celestial blob recoiled upon receiving the sudden & mighty swing she readied in an instant, allowing her a chance to return tenfold the damage it inflicted on her.
...And of course, she would do it with the biggest smile one could muster.
Hava: If you truly want to kill someone, this is how you do it!
She closed the distance between both her and her target, using the speed she gained from her previous attack to aim for a more meaningful counter. Her red eyes shone briefly as she raised an odd cleaver in her hand.
As she did so, a question surfaced: Could a piece of outer space even experience pain?
Hava: ...
If this question were to come from anyone else, it would have certainly raised at the minimum some doubts. However, with the girl currently preparing the way she was going to eliminate her poor victim, doubts were instead replaced with a response filled with confidence.
Hava: There's only one way to find out!
Finally, her blade lowered, indicating the start of her "counterattack".
...
Y/N: Ah... ah.. ah-!
The sound of the director's assistant's breathing was quickly drowned out by the noises coming from his opponent tracking him down. His fear of possibly falling into the endless emptiness of space had long since vanished.
His footsteps barely breached past the wall of cacophony coming from one of the Child of the Galaxy's guards, who tried to shoot him down from afar with a wave of beams.
The sight of the exhausted worker running for his dear life, from a witness' perspective, looked like something out of an action movie.
Y/N: Give me a break!
A curtain of sweat fell down from his face as he yelled out those words. In front him, standing as the sole defense between him and a possible death was a thin layer of skin carrying the grin of Shy Look's face.
No matter how many times he swung, slashed & pierced the entity, nothing seemed to be able to keep it down fully. The wounds and bruises left on it kept vanishing for no apprent reason while his only grew worse with each mistake.
Once an opening revealed itself, the librarian reached through the smiling barrier and closed his hand. As he did so, the torn skin turned into golden pages that quickly took the shape of a burning match with the size of a standard sword.
With no time for a breather, the ex-employee shortened the distance between him and the creature and smacked it with the burning tip of his weapon. A trail of ashes swiftly followed, staining the perfect picture of space within it.
Y/N: ...?
Completely out of breath at this point of the fight, Angela's assistant could only look in confusion as the slime he was fighting stiffened. It looked like a still work of art, immobile.
Then-
"You're cruel people... You're trying to take all my friends away from me."
A cry coming from the Abnormality who refused to fight began to gain in power. Tears ran down his face as he watched one of his "friends" trapped in suspended animation.
His behaviour, at the very least, matched the one it had while it was containment within L. Corp. However, what followed afterwards was far from being something they could have anticipated.
Around them, the millions of small bright dots circling them began to grow brighter. Following that, the ones closest to the battlefield flew downward like shooting stars, creating a rain of shining bullets aiming their way.
The director's unwilling helper could barely stand there in completely shock before a stray projectile coming from outer space made contact with him.
His body collapsed under the sudden weight applied to it by the falling star, sending him on the "floor". A muffled groan followed as he tried to stand back on his feet, barely dodging a second attack.
Everything fell into utter chaos and the side of the Library simply no idea what to do. The best they could manage was running through the shower of stars.
Hava, who was still searching for some way to get her muscle memory going, slipped past everything with a carefree expression. The sudden obstacles only gave her the motivation she needed to keep up.
Unlike her, the barely awake captain was keeping himself hidden by using Shy Look's face as a makeshift umbrella. Once was enough for him, he didn't need a second bullet in the face.
Y/N: Why is this happening?!
The yell carrying his lack of understanding barely reached the ears belonging to the girl with red eyes. In return, she shrugged and swung her cleaver at the last opponent still moving. It, too, was also a victim of sudden rain of shooting stars.
Fortunately, in the group working under the machine's orders, one simply paid no mind to the added hazard, only making it easier for her to land hits on the cosmic entity. The sound of her blade hitting against its body could barely rival the ongoing disturbance.
Attacked from both side, it didn't take long for it to also freeze up like its ally. The second it did, an explosion of golden page filled the librarians' views. The burst of light was enough to make the winning side cover their eyes.
Seconds passed and finally, when their eyes were able to look past the light, what they saw was a tranquil world surrounding them. The hundreds of stars raining down on them a moment ago were now back in their places & the space blobs were nowhere to be seen.
In the eyes of the librarians, it looked like a victory.
Hava: Phew, that's what I needed for sure~
Y/N: I didn't... ah, I swear, I thought I was going to die if this kept going.
Now free from the tension of the battle, the one still holding onto an umbrella of skin fell down on his rear and took a a deep breath, allowing his weapon to switch back to a regular blade.
Standing next to him, the girl wearing Olga's clothes let out a laugh as she placed a hand on his shoulder. Their task wasn't over after all, she couldn't let her guard down too soon.
Not too far away, the small shape of the Child of the Galaxy could be seen laying on the ground, curled up into a ball while letting out faint sobs.
Y/N: ...
Hava: ...
The both of them slowly made their way closer once Angela's doll gathered enough willpower to ignore an increasingly more painful cramp from all the running he had to do.
The Abnormality's eyes slowly moved and looked in their direction. In his hands, a small pebble could be seen, the same one that was given to employees during the many cycles of Lobotomy Corporation.
Many drops of sweat were one of the librarians' face as he turned to his ally to ask a question.
Y/N: So... what do we do? Do we just... we... we?
As he asked, the worker couldn't help himself and began repeating a certain word in particular for an unknown reason. His confusion, however, quickly vanished once every pieces clicked together in his head.
"We".
Something was missing.
Y/N: ...Where did Netzach go?
...
Hava: Right, I forgot he existed. I don't remember seeing him at all.
Finally remembering that a third librarian was gone for the entirety of the battle, the assistants turned their heads towards the direction they came from, or at least what they assumed was the way.
Their guess quickly gained a confirmation once a certain man with green hair was seen standing in place, his eyes barely staying open. He was a perfect textbook example of someone sleeping while standing up.
Sensing their gazes laid on him, the lazy Sephirah opened an eye and saw the battlefield cleared of all enemies, his allies staring back at him in silence.
Netzach: ...
With not a hint of shame, his eye slowly closed. This caused a certain ex-employee to lower his shoulders in defeat, remembering the ordeal he went through to defeat one of the space amalgams.
His fatigue made him unable to demonstrate any indignation or dejection towards the one which was once his superior.
Y/N: ...I'm honestly more shocked that he slept through everything that happened.
Hava: I guess we'll just have to drown him in coffee next time, I'm sure that'll keep him awake~
The girl with long brown hair laughed at her own remark. While she was doing so, a movement in the corner of her eyes made her attention move from a standing sloth to the Abnormality they were supposed to suppress running away.
Her laughter grew a level as she swiftly moved one of her legs to trip the child. Without a single urge to go easy on him, the devilish librarian pinned him on the invisible surface below them with one of her feet.
Hava: So, not too courageous without your friends, huh~?
"Let me go..!"
Hava: Oh I will, once you spit out where you hide your last "friend", got it?
"I don't... I don't know what you're-"
The poor excuse made by the one laying down was cut short by a sudden pressure applied on his back. Despite wearing a smile of amusement, the emotions contained in her red eyes showed a different story. There was no pleasure in them, only a desire for him to not stall for time, even if she had to break his spine to get what she wanted.
Y/N: H-Hava, we're not gonna get an answer if you kill him.
Hava: Oh I know but a permanent injury is fair game, I know what I'm doing.
"H-Here!"
To the surprise of the duo, the Abnormality with a skin ressembling the world surrounding them raised his hands to show the peeble he was holding a moment ago.
A moment of confusion was shared by the assistant librarians before the director's exclusive helper finally reached and grabbed it. Just like before, it was nothing more than a shiny rock in the eyes of the employees.
The girl with a foot placed on their target's back thought for a moment that the child was still trying to find a way to slip away but what she heard gave her doubts.
"W-When I found her... she was all alone, crying to herself... she was just like me. I-I didn't want her to be sad... so I became her friend. Friends don't leave each other crying... so I kept her close to me... so that she wouldn't be sad."
Y/N: ...So she's in that rock?
Hava: It would not be the weirdest thing to happen in the City.
Y/N: If you say so.
Of course, with his lack of memory, it was hard for the one standing next to her to nod back in understanding.
Their small exchange gave enough breathing room for the Child of the Galaxy to slip away from under Hava's foot. He hurriedly stood up to the top of his short height and held his hands together, tears in his eyes.
With what they were looking for in the librarian's hand, their goal here was now cleared. The only thing left for them to do was to wait for Angela to pull them out of the book they were in.
As they waited for that moment to come, the boy with teary eyes spoke up once more.
"C-Can you please promise me something?"
Y/N: ...What's the promise?
Right as his answer came out, Netzach's body disolved into golden pages, signaling that their return was imminent.
"W-When we talked together... she said she was looking for someone. C-Could you promise to help her find them? I-I don't want my friend to be sad."
Y/N: ...I can try, that's as much as I can promise.
Hava: Expecting miracles is a recipe for disaster after all~
She winked back right as her body vanished as well. The only one left was the one Angela was ready to pull out in case of an emergency.
"I-I'm sure you'll be able to help her... Because I remember you... and everyone else told me nice things about you."
Y/N: ...'Everyone'?
"Y-Yes... so it'll be fine."
Not getting the exact response he wanted out of the boy, the employee tried to further develop his question and ask him who 'everyone' meant but as he did so, his turn to vanish had arrived.
The child born from the galaxy itself, now all alone with no friend by his side, slowly sat down. His eyes looked into the distance, hoping that he would find something that he would be able to mark as a "friend".
...
...
A full hour had passed after the battle the Floor of Art led against the Child of the Galaxy' reality came to an end. Of course, once they were back, the Patron librarian in charge of said floor had a lot of explaining to do.
Unfortunately, for the ones who helped him, the only thing he had to say was almost an insult.
Netzach: Everything looked nice, so I assumed that you didn't need my help...
Y/N: ...Don't let Tiphereth hear you say that or you won't hear the end of it.
Everyone was gathered on Netzach's floor. His couch was rightfully taken by both Hava and the fatigued ex-captain, with the latter laying on top of the former as he looked at the Sephirah currently on the floor.
Needless to say but that full hour was not wasted simply on that conversation between them. In fact, the celebration for the new addition to the Library had already been dealt with, which was when a familiar face greeted them alongside everyone else who knew about her.
The one who was successfully rescued was a shy girl with long turquoise hair that looked on the brink of a mental breakdown, wearing a sad look as her constant expression. When they saw her, the duo who did the heavy lifting recognized her almost instantly.
She was a worker in the Safety team alongside Alter Ego & Hava, Elis was her name.
Y/N: Elis?
Elis: Y-Yes...
Her eyes avoided making direct contact with anyone else's gaze.
Immediately upon hearing her faint voice, the words of the small boy returned in Angela's assistant's head. Remembering how she also acted during the brief moments they shared together during the hellish 50 day cycle underground, the answer to a question he had yet to ask was solved.
So, instead of wasting both their time, the ex-captain went straight to the point.
Y/N: You're worried about Daniel, right?
Elis: H-Heh, was it that obvious...?
A drop of sweat formed on her face as she asked back. Out of embarrassment, her interlocutor refused to admit that the one reason he pieced everything together so quickly was because her own kidnapper told them to help her.
Unlike the rest of his past, remembering what occured within the facility they were trapped in was much easier. Thinking about the name Daniel gave him the image of a bright man with short brown hair, someone who kept a somewhat joyous attitude & had the nerves to play dead after the massacre that unfolding during the 49th day for a prank.
To Elis, he was her anchor to reality, his prank nearly caused her to lose it completely both before and after the reveal. Without him supporting her, she was halfway towards snapping, only held back by the hope that he could still be alive somewhere.
Y/N: I'm sure he's fine.
Elis: ...
She didn't respond. However, her eyes finally faced his. She was internally debating about raising her voice in return.
Unfortunately for her, the time she was given to choose an option was cut short by a certain boisterous librarian working under Malkuth's orders. He consistently acted as the icebreaker and kept that role with a beaming smile.
Cereb: It's nice to see you, I hope we can get along!
Elis: I-I guess...
Acting weirdly from the awkwardness still surrounding her, she let the man shake her hand without resisting. One side was glad about the exchange they had while the other was far from happy.
That was how the routine finally kicked in.
...
Y/N: Ah... I assumed that it would have been a calmer type of celebration because of her personality.
After this brief return in the past, the exhausted assistant let out a deep sigh and let his head fully against Hava's front.
Above from them, placing her arms against the top of the couch, Monika was looking down at him with a face filled with mixed emotions.
Monika: They certainly are an excited group. It's a new experience to say the least.
Y/N: You get used to it. Honestly, I'm more surprised that Elis drank as much as did... even if she passed out in the end.
The remains of a pile made entirely from the empty cans the new assistant librarian drank before succumbing to the drink itself could be seen in the corner of the room.
Below him, Hava was feeling the effects of emptying a complete dozen by herself. She was halfway between the world of unconsciousness and reality. Her arms were wrapped around him, leaving him attached to her.
Most of the people present took part in the alcoholic beverages. The few exceptions were Hod's helpers, Morgan and Patchouli, who simply didn't show themselves & the one trapped in a soft embrace, who was forced to smell his human pillow's breath smelling like hell.
Yuri: Isn't this too r-reckless to drink this much?
Y/N: Even if they died, Angela would bring them back. I think that's mostly the reason they go so far.
Monika: Being able to bring someone back to life, it does like a convenient ability.
She laughed to herself. Yuri, who sat not too far away with a book in her hands, glanced at her before looking away, pretending to not hear for now.
Y/N: How many times until Angela finally accepts this as normal?
Hava: Haha... I'd say a few dozens~
Y/N: Go to sleep.
Unsurprised by her words, the still sober worker on the couch lightly tapped her head. Monika quietly watched their conversation unfold in silence until finally-
Monika: I have to admit, this doesn't look like a comfortable position.
Y/N: Trust me, it isn't. The only mercy I have is that she's still wearing Olga's look.
The director's assistant replied right as a pair of footsteps made their way to the etrance of the room. Standing in the doorway, Yesod's figure was seen looking at the mess left everywhere.
A silent annoyance was visible on his face.
Y/N: Oh hey Yesod, good timing, do you know where Roland is?
Yesod: No I do not.
Y/N: Tch, Netzach said that he kept a beer for him. I would have looked for him myself but... circumstances happened.
Yesod: And I assume said circumstance is laziness.
Y/N: More like a wish for survival. At least, that's how I interpret it.
Following after the man dressed in purple, Hod's face popped out from outside. She awkwardly looked inside and saw the amount of people gathered together, completely drunk at this point.
Monika: Ah, miss Hod, did you need something?
Hod: Yes, could you and Yuri come with me, I would like your help with something.
The second girl who was rescued on the Floor of Literature took one last look towards the one still trapped with the devil with red eyes' grasp, pondering on whether he should actually bother trying to escape or not at this point.
Monika: Of course.
In the end, as the duo made their exit along with their Sephirah, the ex-captain chose to rebel against his own fate. What Yesod witnessed was akin to a fish desperately struggling out of a net. It would have been a comically if not for his cold and unamused gaze on him as he did so.
Still, in spite of that, results showed themselves and he was able to fall on the floor next to the couch. Hava let out a brief groan in response but quickly fell asleep.
Y/N: Phew, alright, Y/N is back in service. Can I help with something?
Yesod: You can begin with cleaning the mess you have caused.
Y/N: ...Maybe something else?
The glare he got in return was enough to shut down his attempt to dodge the responsibility placed upon him. For the second time today, his shoulders dropped in defeat as he crouched down, picking up the empty cans.
The Patron librarian of the Floor of Technological Sciences quietly watched as he forced the ones still conscious to help him. Many complaints were heard from the drunkard as they dragged themselves to work.
Still, it was better than having Angela dealt with the issue herself. That was a certainty.
