Ch.29: Molar Office

Y/N: ...Is this a common occurence?

The faint words belonging to Angela's unwilling helper reached the ears of the Grade 9 Fixer who stood next to him. A bead of sweat was visible on his face and his eyes showed signs of bad memories.

The man in a suit glanced at the assistant and averted his eyes back to what they were seeing with the power of the Library. Through the invisible window that showed the outside world, the trio could witness a group of people trapped within a malfunctioning train, leaving them to their own devices.

The warp train, the miracle technology that could transport anyone at any station in a grand total of 10 seconds, no matter the distance. When it was first mentioned, Roland saw the amnesiac in the corner of his sight widen his eyes in amazement. The ex-agent found this advancement so incredible that he had a hard time believing that it was real.

However, this bewilderment soon died out once the train broke, replacing it with a wave of disappointment. The group they were following, the Molar Office, was also surprised by this sudden error.

Soon, the surprise turned into annoyance for the trio on the outside while the disappointment from the worker changed to a slight worry as hours passed inside the vehicle... at least if he believed what the Library showed them.

Finally, after a moment of silence, the uninvited guest spoke up to calm his thoughts.

Roland: I've heard that some incidents like this happened when it first launched but I haven't heard something like this before, especially to that extend.

Y/N: ...Did something happen?

Roland: Maybe.

The duo who exchanged quiet words focused back on what was going on, fearing that Angela might turn her cold gaze towards them if she decided that they were annoying her with their commentary. Just as they did, a familiar invitation was seen in the hand of the woman named Olga.

Then, nothing, the one access they had to the world beyond the walls of the Library vanished. The director swiftly turned in her seat towards her assistants. It was clear as day that she had many questions in her head and just like always, Roland would have to answer to the best of his capabilities.

It was a tough work for the washed up worker, the fighting he had to do as well was included in the previous statement.

In an attempt to respond to both his employer and his colleague's questions, the Patron librarian of Keter's floor continued his thoughts.

Roland: A malfunction like this could be fatal to W Corp's reputation if it ever gets out to the public.

Angela: It was supposed to arrive at the destination in only 10 seconds, right?

Roland: Yep, they can get to any station in 10 seconds, no matter how far away they are. A 30-second delay would be a big enough issue already, a 30 hour delay would be fatal to W Corp's trust.

Y/N: ...I mean, it's understandable, no one would take this if they knew they could end up stuck for more than an entire day.

The exhausted worker nodded along, letting out his own thoughts. His own experience "trapped" in one location was much longer than a mere 30 hours. However, unlike them, they still had a place to eat, rest and ways to waste time, something the passengers did not have.

The captain sent his silent prayers towards the remaining passengers and focused on the conversation occuring next to him.

Angela: ...Anyway, I might be able to have an unexpected reunion soon enough.

Roland: You have any familiar faces in that Office?

The AI lightly shook her head to deny the Fixer's words. Piecing everything together, he then followed with a second question that hit the bullseye

Roland: You mean Myo, the captain of the Rabbit Team, then?

Angela: Yes.

Hearing the name of the woman with short white hair made the hair on the assistant's arms tense up. He didn't know much about her but in his honest opinion, he didn't want to know more.

The one who remained mostly quiet gulped down his sudden spike of fright and gathered his thoughts before raising his voice.

Y/N: I highly doubt reunions are going to end on good terms.

Angela: We never had any meaningful exchanges in the past. We won't be meeting each other with smiles on our faces.

Roland: You weren't friends with her? Eh, you know what, I guess it makes more sense this way.

A small grin formed in the corners of the ex-agent's mouth upon hearing the indirect jab sent at the director. Just hearing him say that she had no friends, or at least say she wasn't friend with a certain Rabbit, was enough to make him get over his previous emotions.

Schadenfreude.

The machine kept a cold face but her gaze landed on the grinning worker, as if able to sense his silent mockery aimed at her.

Angela: What did you expect? Did you really think I would have any friends to casually chat with?

It was now the Patron librarian's turn to see the expression barely seen on the third member's face. Seeing it was enough to make him realize that he may have accidentally stepped on a landmine.

A drop of sweat grew visible on his face for a moment and quickly fell down onto the floor as he tried to salvage the conversation.

Roland: I was just wondering. R Corp is different from Fixers on a fundamental level. Their work might seem similar to what Fixers do but they take on things of a much larger scale with a much more professional mentality.

Perhaps out of pure luck, his employer completely took the bait and replied with a calm tone.

Angela: I expect no less from one of the Wings.

Roland: ...Aren't you relaxed.

The man in a suit drooped his shoulders, heaving a deep sigh along with his movement. Beside him, the unwilling puppet finally got over his own silent laugh. There wasn't much to say after everything was said, leading to an awkward silence to form.

Y/N: I'll go prepare to greet the guests.

Finally, after standing up on his feet, the employee broke up the atmosphere and made his way towards the exit. Roland was about to do the same to prepare for the upcoming guests but came to a stop once the head of the assistant turned to look at the director.

Y/N: Also, Angela...

The AI quickly turned to greet his stare. It wasn't a common sight to see him call out to her like that and she wasn't going to ignore it... even though she knew what he would then say.

Y/N: You'd make friends much quicker without an attitude like yours. A shame that the only one who tolerated your actions isn't awake right now.

Angela: You wouldn't understand.

Y/N: And not saying anything doesn't help.

His words did not lack the sharpness it needed to make her react, which in turn allowed him to further dig into her.

Once his final words were said, the ex-agent left the room for good, allowing the Grade 9 Fixer to do the same. The insults & bickering compared to when he first woke up definitely became not as often as before but the relationship between the director and her assistant did not improve during that time.

Still it was much better than the time the Library shook under the pressure of their arguments. This moment remained firmly in the Patron librarian's memories. To this day, he still had no idea what caused said vibration.

...

...

Y/N: Welcome to the Library. I hope the travel to here was much more fortunate than the situation you were all in.

Just like usual, the assistant kept a smile as he adressed the guests who stared at him. In his hand, the book that finally obtained a purpose after weeks of being nothing more than deadweight was present.

However, the only words he first got in return came from the commonly called "big sis" Olga, who showed a hungover smile... if that was a thing.

Olga: Greetings too lad~

Y/N: ..."lad". Huh, that's a new one.

Not unfazed by the returned greeting, the librarian tilted his head and spoke to himself. Next to the one who stepped forward first, a boy with black hair, Rain, let out a sigh. He assumed that things would go nowhere if Olga were to take charge in her state and decided to do it instead.

Rain: I apologize. We're in a bit of a confusion right now, and she's hungover as well...

Y/N: Oh, uh, I can tell.

"It's not my first time dealing with something like", that thought crossed the ex-captain's mind but he ultimately chose to keep it to himself.

Instead, the worker gave a glance at the tall Fixer and gave a few signs to check if she was alright. She replied with yet another smile of confirmation.

Olga: Ey, I know it's sudden but what the hell was going on back there?

Y/N: Unfortunately...

Angela: Unfortunately, we do not know about what happened. All that we know is that you are our guests.

Just like many times before, the director's helper jumped at the sudden appearance of the AI with cold eyes. His feet landed a few steps away and his body almost landed on the trio that signed the invitation, only stopped by Olga's free hand that kept him standing.

Olga: Phew, you should watch your steps~

Y/N: Sorry.

A hurried nod was sent as a sign of appreciation as the both of them gave themselves some distance.

Olga: Still, Myo wasn't lying.

Mika: What do you mean?

The shortest of the group, a girl with small & round glasses raised an eyebrow in an inquiring manner while keeping smidgen of doubt. She had her fair share of experience dealing with the hungover Fixer and knew to not be expecting much.

Olga: I know it's hard to believe but we're talking to a genuine machine, not a human~!

Angela: ...

Y/N: Uh...

The poor librarian forced to help the machine currently standing behind him began to sweat bullets as the words he wanted to say became stuck. Without even turning around, he could feel the invisible glare aiming in their direction.

A glare capable of tearing something apart, a sensation he knew well at this point.

Mika: Let's not anger her now. We'll just take the books listed on the invitation and leave, okay?

The demand coming from the Fixer who wanted to be done with this conversation was immediately ignored by her superior, who kept digging further than she should.

Olga: Come on lassie~ You know what relationships the Library has with L Corp, right? Myo said that you being here is indisputable evidence that this place is related to L Corp somehow or another~

After a short period of silence, the director, who also wanted to be done with this discussion, raised her hand towards the door that would allow them to step deeper in the Library.

Angela: ...I'm sure you can find the answer to that in the books you seek.

Rain: We're terribly sorry, we'll be going in now.

Without paying much attention to Angela's catchphrase, Rain grabbed Olga's arm and began dragging her inside before she could make herself look like an even bigger fool. That didn't stop her from sending one last line towards the librarians.

Olga: We'll be back in a few minutes~

Mika: Please take this seriously...

The door closed behind them, leaving the duo remaining to stand in complete silence. Both had nothing to say to each other and went their own ways... or took their own method to reach the same goal.

During his walk to the upper floor, the exhausted employee pondered on the Warp train. If what Roland said was true then a malfunction that lasted to this extend of time would have definitely caused an outrage.

...So why was the issue not solved immediately?

...

...

Hava: Hm... I suppose it is strange.

Hours after the reception had concluded with a victory for the Library, a group of assistant librarians found themselves gathered together. The reason why was the amnesiac worker himself, who wanted to know more details from others who possibly had some insight on the matter.

The girl with red eyes leaned in her seat and raised her shoulders, showing that she had no explanation, nor any idea why they would let an error like this persist for so long.

Hava: I never personally used one so I can't really comment on it. Maybe time works differently?

Dana: ...But it's a warp technology, not a time one.

Hava: I dunno, Lobotomy Corporation created monsters & produced energy, you can't be too sure.

Sitting next to them, the recently awakened worker assigned to Malkuth's floor carefully listened to every word they said, writing everything down in a book she used during her free time to record her knowledge.

Rin, who stood beside her, took a quick peek inside and followed with a deep sigh. Just hearing about the Wings & Singularities was enough to give them a headache.

Rin: I doubt they would allow something like this to slip out so easily, this is strange.

Hava: Mhm~ Speaking of strange...

The topic of the conversation was swiftly changed by Netzach's assistant as she stared at a golden page stuck between her fingers. For the others, it was something that they had time to grow used to but as a new member of the Library, she wasn't.

It was a Key Page, a fragment of a guest's talent and knowledge, made to be used by them.

Still in her own thoughts, Hava turned her wrist to take a closer look at it before closing her hand into a fist. Following that, a bright light filled the room for a brief moment, a light that originated from her own body.

This short of moment of blindness lasted at most a second but to the surprise of everyone, once their vision returned, what they saw was the usually grinning girl laying on the floor, the chair she used next to her.

Dana: What the- are you alright?

Hava: Yea... just lost my balance.

As she replied, she took hold of the extended hand given to her by Angela's puppet and regained her footing. This also allowed the group present to assess the potential bruises she might have gotten... or at least that was the plan.

In front of them, the one many knew as a teasing devil unfazed by anything adjusted her hair, unaware that she had equipped the Key Page that she was holding. It was golden, a color deserving to be called an 'Object d'Art' and one that was recent and had yet to be used by anyone until now.

With the sight before them, the librarians were forced to come to a silent consensus: equipping a guest's Key Page allowed them to gain their combat prowesses and talents... but also their physical attributes.

Hava: Hm? I don't think watching a girl make her hair is something to be gawking abo-

The remark that could have easily dispelled the awkward air that formed was cut short once she saw Patchouli lower her gaze from her face. Confused, she followed where she was looking and soon froze up in place.

A complete silence remained.

Dana: ...I guess we can confirm that you're now Olga, down to the details- Ow!

A light punch was sent in the shoulder belonging to the girl with red hair, a gift sent by Rin. It was an indirect way to tell her to keep her mouth shut by her colleague.

During this small exchange, Hava's metaphorical gears within her own brain finally resumed their activities. Then, with no hesitation in her actions, she turned to look away from the group and began to unbutton the white blouse she was now wearing.

Y/N: H-Hey, Hava!!

Thankfully, for everyone's sake, the exhausted captain rushed behind her and redid what she was undoing. The last thing they needed right now was to see her fully remove her top out of pure curiosity. At any moment, Angela could arrive and if she saw them like this, hell would be a light punishment compared to what would have happened.

...Or maybe it was their fears making them think of the worst scenario.

In either case, the deed was done and the duo now stood still for a moment, completely immobile.

Y/N: ...I honestly don't know how I should react, especially since this was the first thing you did.

Hava: Don't give me a tone like that, someone had to be curious enough to look~

Y/N: Now's not the time for the jokes...

A prolonged sigh slipped from her "captor"'s lips. The both of them knew she had the upper hand in a battle like this... or any fight in general. So, if she truly wanted to struggle, the assistant's grasp would have done nothing to stop her.

If the librarian holding her had to take a guess, she probably wasn't planning to go full nude mode like they had feared and already got what she was trying to achieve. Or perhaps, she realized that it wasn't the best idea to do this in front of everyone and let herself be stopped.

It was hard for him to read someone like her, even after all the time they spent together during L Corp's cycle.

Patchouli: Still, this is an interesting observation. From what I've seen, most outfits used during receptions tend to remain much more reserved. I suppose there is a first for everything.

The girl with long hair continued writing down in the book she used to note what she knew, completely back to normal in a record time. Meanwhile, Dana finally snapped out of her shock, helped by the hit she received a moment ago.

Dana: I think my heart stopped once more for a bit, this is not good for my health.

The poor employee with a ponytail quietly mumbled to herself as a way to deal with the sudden chaos that erupted in the room a minute ago. It arrived and left just as quickly, leaving everyone except the culprit in a state of bewilderment.

Said culprit, on the other hand, showed no signs of embarrassment. In fact, her smile only grew wider once her experiment was concluded, a reaction that formed a curtain of sweats on the director's helper's face for many reasons.

The last thing he saw was her busty figure swiftly slipping out of his grasp and twirl once in order to reach the door. Then, she turned to give a devilish look that he had grown accustomed to before closing the door, leaving behind the small group that was still inside.

A second sigh came from the previous captain of the Central Command after making sure that Dana was not going to pass out. One thing was sure: Hava's cheeky smile usually meant nothing good. Whatever it was, the only thing he could do is wait and see what she was planning to do.

As he left, he unconsciously prayed that it would be just a mere prank and nothing more.
