Chapter 4 (Part 3)

Oliver extends his arms, reaching towards the pinnacle. His fingers tightly grip the surface, his nails digging into the earth for a secure hold as he pulls his body upward, his feet finding their footing on the rugged terrain. Standing tall, he takes in the sight of a vast crowd gathered before him.

Finally, Oliver reaches the summit of the plateau. He scans his surroundings, realizing he is standing in front of a residential neighbourhood. Meeting the gaze of the crowds, he acknowledges them with a nod before turning his attention to his friends, who are still making their way up.

Sophia springs into the air, soaring above Oliver. She then glides down and lands on the ground. Stepping aside, she aligns herself with the path ahead and pauses, running her fingers through her hair while patiently waiting for the others to join her.

"What?" Oliver gasped, his breath caught in surprise.

Sophia glanced at Oliver. "Huh?" she responded with a light smirk.

"I was expecting to give you a hand," Oliver gawked at Sophia, his eyes wide with disbelief.

Sophia shrugged, raising her shoulders. "Hmm," she murmured, her eyes shut.

Suddenly, Sarrah and Bethany spring up, leaping into the air with such height that they resemble graceful birds in flight. They descend, landing beside Sophia. Sarrah and Bethany exchange smiles, beaming infectious smiles at one another.

The setting sun casts its golden glow on Sarrah and Bethany, heightening their beauty and transforming them into living portraits. However, their tranquillity is abruptly interrupted by a piercing groan behind them. Their eyes widen, and they spin around to investigate the source of the sound.

"Ha—" Edgar moaned.

Gregory firmly grasps the peak of the plateau, his fingers digging into the soil. Groaning, he pulls his body upward, overcoming the challenging ascent. Edgar clings on his back, adding a burden that intensifies the climb. Sweat streams down Gregory's face as he labours through the exertion.

"Ha! Ha..." Edgar huffed, his breath laboured. "I'm dying! I'm utterly exhausted..."

Gregory dug his fingers into the soil and pulled himself upward, reaching the pinnacle of the plateau, joining his spouse and friends. "Ed!! I've been carrying you the entire time!" Gregory shouted.

Bethany couldn't help but burst into laughter, quickly covering her mouth.

"Men," Sarrah scoffed, raising an eyebrow.

As Bethany turned around, the sight of a tall arch greeted her. "Oh, look!" She began reading the sign mounted on top of the arch. "B- bla—"

"Blackstone Hill!" Sophia interjected. "It's Hannsbarnnian."

Gregory took a step forward, his breaths coming in ragged pants. "...Now what?" he asked as he panted.

Edgar stretched his limbs as a proud smile tugged across his face. "I can't believe I managed to climb something all by myself!"

"Shut up," Gregory mumbled, glaring at Edgar.

Oliver approached the plateau's edge, peering down into the depths of the low ground. Colossal buildings sprawled across the landscape, their grandeur diminished to mere specks in Oliver's panoramic view. From his elevated position, they appeared as tiny bugs, insignificant in the vastness of the scene. Letting out a sigh, Oliver shifted his gaze towards his companions.

"What should we do now?" Gregory asked, still gasping for air.

Oliver approached Gregory and placed a firm hand on his shoulder. "Greg?"

"Yeah?"

"You guys stay here," Oliver said.

A flicker of concern crossed Gregory's face. "Wait, where are you going?"

"To repair the mountainside," Oliver replied.

Oliver swiftly turns on his heels and races towards the plateau's edge. Gregory's eyes widen in shock as he comprehends the direction his beloved is headed, gasping in shock. Gregory instinctively begins chasing after Oliver as his heart pounds in his chest. But before he can reach him, Oliver fearlessly propels himself off the precipice, plunging into the depths of the destroyed mountainside. His leap leaves Gregory frozen, his mind struggling to comprehend the daring act he has witnessed.

"Oli!" Gregory's voice echoed through the air, escaping his lips with a desperate plea as he watched his lover plummeting from a towering height.

People in the lowland stood still, frozen with shock, their eyes widening as their gazes locked on the Remaining Podeshire. Gasps and yelps escaped from the women, their startled voices intertwining with the resonating shouts of the men. Their pupils contracted as their piercing voices reverberated through the air.

As he fearlessly descended from the heavens, Oliver fixed an unwavering gaze towards the earth. The rush of wind tousled his hair as he squinted his eyes. Slowly, he clenched his fists and released them as he spun mid-air.

Finally, Oliver's feet made contact with the ground, but there was no impact, no sign of discomfort. Not a hint of pain escaped his lips as he landed, maintaining his balance with a crouch. As his shoes met the soil, a cloud of smoke materialized underneath him.

Everyone, from the highlands to the lowlands, who bore witness to the Remaining Podeshire's unscathed descent, gasped in sheer amazement. The crowd's deafening chatter pierced through the atmosphere. Men and women exchanged bewildered glances, trying to comprehend what they had seen.

Oliver began striding away from the plateau, hastening his pace as he approached the gathering crowds. With a sense of reverence, the onlookers parted before him, creating a pathway through the street. Oliver continued his determined march, distancing himself from the mountainside until he reached a safe distance. Then, he stopped, turning his gaze skyward.

Oliver dashed back towards the plateau. With each step he took, rocks levitated, positioning themselves beneath his feet. As he continued to run, more stones and pebbles gravitated towards him, forming a floating staircase that supported his ascent, step by step, until the rocks elevated like ethereal stairs in perfect harmony with his determined stride.

"Oh, look!" Sophia gasped, pointing at Oliver.

Rocks and stones rise, emerging like sturdy pillars beneath Oliver's feet. As Oliver continues his steady sprint, a smooth trail materializes, stretching out like a well-paved road, guiding his path. Each step he takes spawns a new set of stone stairs, forming an earthen staircase that follows his swift movements.

Once Oliver reaches a significant height, he launches forward with a soaring leap, drifting towards his companions. Behind him, the earth responds to his presence, shaping itself into a resilient soil pathway, seamlessly connecting the high and low grounds. Taking a deep breath, Oliver closes his eyes and savours the moment. Slowly, he turns around and smirks, glancing at the remarkable creation he has summoned.

Sophia, Gregory, Edgar, Sarrah, Bethany, and the rest of the residents stand frozen with their mouths agape. Their wide eyes remain locked on the majestic mountainside that materialized before them. An eerie stillness settles on the land, punctuated only by the collective gasps and hushed whispers that gush through their lips.
