Chapter 9 (Part 3)
The resonating sound of the bells reaches deep into Asbranne, even reaching the ears of Frederick inside his mansion. He had been peacefully reading a newspaper article while seated in a chair, but the vibrations from the chimes ring throughout his green drawing room. Intrigued, he stands up and moves closer to a nearby window, gazing into his front yard.
Frederick's jaw drops as he observes nearby residents leaving their houses. As he lingers near the window, the intensity of the ringing bells grows louder. He can also see his reflection on the glass slowly turning frightened.
Minutes pass, yet the tolling of the bells shows no signs of abating. The chimes continue to resound within, around, and beyond the city. The volume is overwhelming, almost unbearable, transcending and reaching the heavens.
In the meantime, chaos reigns around Oliver. He witnesses employees from various establishments stepping outside their doorways, their heads shaking as they search for clues amidst the panic. However, the surging crowds push the bewildered men along with them, causing Oliver to gasp in concern. Others sprint away in every possible direction, scattering around.
As the crowds hastened away, Oliver knew he had to take action. He turned around and faced his friends, shouting, "Guys! Please, help me evacuate the entire city!"
"We're with you, Oli," Gregory stated firmly.
Oliver suddenly ceased, a second thought giving him pause. "Wait a minute... this city is massive, like the size of Asbranne Lake itself! How can we evacuate everyone before those Pyro Void Monsters arrive?" Oliver's brows arched up.
"We'll focus on certain areas," Sarrah suggested. "We'll cover as much as we can and leave immediately."
"Yeah. And in the meantime, you should go to the City Hall and inform the mayor to initiate an urgent mass evacuation!" Bethany advised. "This will quicken the evacuation process!"
"Sure. But what about all of you? Can you handle it??" Oliver asked as concern drew on his face.
"We will, and we can!" Gregory assured. "But let's make it fast."
"Alright. Uh, Ed?" Oliver called out, turning to Edgar with a worried expression.
"Yeah?" Edgar responded.
"You need to evacuate, too. Head to the docks now," Oliver instructed. "All of you, please do your best to evacuate everyone. But don't linger near the grassland or the wall separating it from the city. Find a way to move away while persuading as many people as possible to leave Asbranne!" Oliver appealed to the others.
"We got it," Gregory nodded.
"Thank you. And good luck," Oliver turned and began to move forward when a sudden realization struck him. "...Dad," he murmured. His pace hastened as he hurried down the street.
"Hey! Let's regroup at Mr Frederick's mansion!" Sophia called out to Oliver, raising her voice.
"No! I'll go there alone! Evacuate everyone, including yourselves. Do not wait! Save yourselves, please!" Oliver turned around and looked at his friends, yelling as he dashed through the crowded street.
Sophia looked at the rest of the group and yelled, "...Everybody, split up!"
Sophia, Sarrah and Bethany went to their left side. They quickly headed over a small, narrow path. After they squeezed through, they reached a marketplace with confused residents waiting at the stalls.
"Madame! I'm telling the truth! Leave! Can't you hear the bells!?" a soldier desperately pleaded with a group of vendors in the marketplace.
The vendors dismissively ignored the soldier's pleas.
"Everyone, we need to evacuate the city! The Pyrovoidians are approaching!" Sophia urgently informed, sprinting across the street with the other girls.
"Hurry! Return to your homes and gather your essential belongings!" Sarrah shouted as she hurried down the road.
"Make your way out of here!" Bethany emphasized.
"Oliver Podeshire himself has declared an evacuation!" Sophia added.
The vendors' eyes widened, and they scattered around the marketplace.
Meanwhile, Gregory and Edgar dashed to the right side. They also squeezed out from a small alleyway. Once they reached the road, their eyes immediately landed on panicking residents fleeing away. However, Gregory still spotted some idle people standing on the sidewalks.
"...Ma'am! Sir! You must leave this place! The Pyro Void Monsters are approaching, and they will attack everyone!" Gregory warned a group of vendors on the street.
"...And who are you?" a lady responded in a prickly manner.
Gregory let out a sigh of frustration, his face reflecting his exasperation. "I... am... Gregory," he answered, forcing a smile.
"So what?" the lady replied dismissively.
"And I demand you with your family to evacuate this city with your valuable belongings! This situation isn't about sarcasm!" Gregory shouted with a deep, blaring voice as he pointed at the street.
Finally realizing the gravity of the situation, the vendor, accompanied by her husband, understands the sincerity of the impending danger. They swiftly grasp the knobs of their stalls and forcefully swing them open, revealing silver and gold coins. Quickly, they reach for the valuable treasure, clutching as much as they can carry, before swiftly fleeing down the street.
"...Ed! Did you hear what Oliver said?" Gregory said, leaning down to meet Edgar's gaze. "You need to follow the people on the streets. If you come across a carriage heading south, find a way to get on board without being noticed. Wait until you reach safety. And just... just escape!"
"...Greg, what in the world are you talking about? No! I'll stay with you," said Edgar.
"What!? No!" Gregory shook his head reluctantly.
"I do not care. I won't leave without you," Edgar stated. "I will help you until we're ready to evacuate with the others."
