Chapter 12 (Part 2)
Explosions crashed, piercing the nocturnal expanse with an echoing boom. Fireworks crackled and sizzled, casting a vibrant, colourful spectacle across the landscape. Some ignited at ground level, while others burst forth, painting the heavens with rainbow-like hues. The air filled with whooshes and reverberating echoes, followed by thunderous bangs ringing through the night sky.
Fireworks danced in the sky, each type boasting its unique explosion pattern. Some sparkled brilliantly, while others shimmered and flickered, illuminating the night with vibrant colours that showered. It was as though the darkened atmosphere had become a canvas, which the fireworks artistically brushed strokes of radiant light.
Entering Frederick's grand mansion, the visitors leave the doorway ajar, revealing a glimpse of the grandeur within. They are none other than Oliver's friends—Sophia, Gregory, Edgar, Sarrah, and Bethany. They stand within the lobby, slowly rotating their bodies as they gaze at the extravagant sight before them. Their jaws drop as their eyes wander, staring at the luxury of the fully illuminated, colossal empire chandelier suspended from the ceiling.
A door swings open, revealing a demure maid on the other side. With a gentle nod, she steps aside, allowing the group to proceed. Her voice quivers as she utters.
"The hosts are ready to meet you. You may enter the drawing room, please," she murmured bashfully.
Sophia, Gregory, Edgar, Sarrah, and Bethany pass through the doorway one by one, entering the room. The striking sight before them instantly draws their eyes. A resplendent red damask covers the walls, intricately woven with delicate floral patterns, complemented by elegant wooden panelling along the lower portion with golden trimmings on the edges.
A wide window bathed the space in moonlight, casting a warm glow to every corner. Taking centre stage in the room, a single, elongated white sofa awaits. The hosts, Oliver and Frederick, sit on the elegant perch, waiting for their visitors as they indulge in their cups of tea.
"Guys!" Oliver rose from the sofa, approaching his friends.
"Oli!" Gregory stepped forward and embraced Oliver with an arm, patting his back.
"Hello!" the others greeted, still astonished by the luxurious surroundings.
"Good evening, everybody," Oliver beamed, his smile stretching broadly. "Take a seat!"
Each person settled onto the long sofa, finding their place.
"Ah! Welcome, everyone, to my humble mansion," Frederick spoke with a benevolent grin.
"Your mansion never fails to impress, Mr Frederick," Sophia complimented politely.
"Why, thank you, Sophia," Frederick grinned. "...Now, I want to express my sincere appreciation to each of you. You've all done exceptional work. Did you hear my son's words earlier? It would be impossible for him to defend this city without each one of you. That's precisely why I gathered you all here, to extend my congratulations on the success you've achieved in defending our city and vanquishing those monsters."
"Thank you so much, sire," Gregory grinned.
"The pleasure is all mine," Frederick replied warmly. "I am truly honoured to be in the presence of the heroes who saved Asbranne."
"And we are honoured to be conversing with the former mayor of Asbranne," Oliver said as he smirked.
Frederick's smile brightened. "Aw, thank you," he responded. Frederick then gently took hold of Oliver's hands. "Oliver, from the very first day I met you when you were just four years old, I knew you would accomplish great things as you grew up. Now... as a grown man, you have proven yourself worthy of your title. You are truly the Defender of Asbranne. Your ancestors would be so proud."
Oliver leaps forward, his arms looping his adoptive father's neck in a tight embrace. Frederick returns the hug, holding Oliver close. Oliver can feel the warmth in his heart growing, an indescribable sensation coursing through him. It is an unforgettable moment, etching itself deeply into his memory.
"Now, may I have the pleasure of getting acquainted with the rest of our reputed guests?" Frederick inquired, gazing at the unfamiliar faces after Oliver released him from their heartfelt hug.
