Chapter 11 (Part 6)
Roars filled the horizon. It caused everyone to stop cheering as they froze on the ground steadily. Men and women shook their heads, looking at each other in confusion.
"...There are more..." Oliver uttered in disbelief.
Emerging from the foggy expanse of the horizon, Pyrovoidians of varying shapes and sizes advance relentlessly. Bipedal figures, agile sprinters, and fearsome, lizard-like creatures march forward. With a contorted grin, the monsters glare at the men from afar.
"...Let's finish them!"
Oliver punches through the air. He then turns to face his troops, raising his fist. Taking a deep breath, Oliver hastens towards the incoming Pyrovoidians.
Another clash erupted in the heart of the grassland. The air flooded with the whistling of swords slicing through the void. The clash of blades echoed as they found their mark, piercing the necks of the monstrous adversaries.
A guard surges forward. He then swings his sword upward with all his might, severing a monster's head and sending it soaring through the air. Suddenly, a towering cyclops-like Pyro Void Monster emerges from behind, kicking him into the air as his bones crack.
The guard's lifeless body falls onto the ground right in front of Oliver's face, who has beheaded another monster. Horrified, Oliver's gaze darts to his left. Standing still, his ears become muffled, sensing the silence engulfing the air despite the ongoing chaos.
In the meantime, a soldier cleaved a monster's head from its body. But, before he could celebrate his victory, a sprinting Pyrovoidian stealthily closed in from behind. The beast quickly pounced on the unsuspecting soldier and tore him to pieces.
Meanwhile, a man's sword slipped from his trembling grasp. Frozen in place like a statue, he stood defenceless. It was too late as the monsters closed on him, crushing him beneath their assault.
Frightened, three men discarded their swords. Their terrified screams pierced the air as they desperately fled. However, the monsters proved swifter than the escaping men, swiftly encircling them and tearing them apart, ravaging them to fragments.
On the other side of the battlefield, a man brandished his sword fiercely. However, a single missed strike proved fatal. Quickly, a monster seized the opportunity, gripping the man's back and tearing through his flesh like paper.
Oliver then notices a swift wolf-like Pyrovoidian running past him. He watches it go as he slowly fixes his body in its direction. At first, Oliver is confused about why the monster doesn't bother to touch him until he realizes where the creature is heading, causing his eyes to widen.
Edgar accidentally drops his knees to the grass. His palms hit the ground forcefully, shattering the potion bottles in his hands into glinting shards. It impales his skin, causing him to yelp in agony and wince his eyes.
Gregory rushes to his wounded cousin. He then pulls Edgar's bag to his lap, opens it and digs his hand inside. Among the dozens of colourful potions inside, Gregory only grabs the last red concoction. He then opens the tube and places the tip onto Edgar's lips.
"Drink it, drink it," Gregory's voice trembled as he mumbled anxiously.
Oliver's rapid heart pounds in his chest as he comprehends the dire situation. The realization strikes him like lightning. Oliver learns that Gregory and Edgar are the primary targets of the relentless Pyro Void Monster that has run past him.
"...Watch out!" Oliver yelled, raising his arms in shock.
Gregory and Edgar scream in fear. Gregory quickly stands up and wraps his arms around his cousin. Gregory then uses his body as a barricade against the incoming monster.
As the Pyrovoidian draws nearer the two young men, Sophia appears from the sky. She descends to the ground, slicing her sword through the monster's neck, decapitating it. She fixes her stance, bends her knees, and looks around, ready to defend Gregory and Edgar from the other beasts.
Suddenly, swarms of Pyro Void Monsters warp around the group. Sophia knows she has to do her best. She runs around Gregory and Edgar, wielding her sword and slaying every pouncing monster.
Backup arrives as Sarrah and Bethany leap next to Sophia. Sarrah assists Sophia in defending the two helpless men. They stand on both sides, slashing their weapons around and killing the merciless monsters. Meanwhile, Bethany swiftly takes arrows from her back and shoots them using her bow as fast as she can.
However, the monsters keep multiplying from the horizon. They keep coming, despite the amount that has been slaughtered. There are still many swarming around, and the Pyro Void Monsters flood around the group of friends.
Unexpectedly, a light appears out of nowhere. The rays of glowing elements shine right in the direction of the swarming monsters. It doesn't take time for the Pyrovoidians to realize the light source—from Oliver's palms.
The horde around the group of friends abandons their easy victims. Instead, they hasten and dash across the grassland towards their new prey. They all growl and chuckle as they jump around Oliver.
Oliver dispels the ray of light from his palms, luring the monsters towards him. He then slashes his arms upwards in an alternating motion. Elements of different colours spawn from his hands, swiftly beheading the pouncing creatures.
The severed heads of the monsters fly into the sky, accompanied by dark reddish-violet blood that spurts from their lifeless bodies. Despite the constant stream of monsters being slain, their numbers show no sign of diminishing. More continue to appear from every direction, swarming around their lone victim.
Glistening with sweat, Oliver's face contorts. He clenches his teeth, furrowing his eyebrows. Swaying his arms and spinning, he releases swift, thin white elements into the sky. The magic ascends through the incoming monsters, each strike resulting in their demise.
As Oliver turns around to swing his left arm, a Pyrovoidian pounces on him from behind, knocking him to the ground. Oliver's screams of pain and agony fill the air as the bloodthirsty monsters revel in his suffering. Unable to stand, the creatures mercilessly drag him around.
Oliver cries for help, moaning in torment. He can feel the Pyrovoidians' cold teeth sinking beneath his skin and touching his bones. But, with his remaining energy, Oliver summons an unexpected blow.
A white circular gas dome explodes and expands in every direction, coming from Oliver's hands. The element passes through human men and women without effect. But, when it touches the Pyro Void Monsters, they disintegrate into ashes. The monstrosities roar in agony as their pain mirrors the torment they have inflicted on the innocent before turning to cinders.
