Chapter 6 (Part 3)
As he left the Fuers in the dining room, passing by the lounge, Oliver suddenly heard a gentle knock on the front door. Oliver sniffled, swiftly wiping off his tears as he rushed to open the entrance. As he swung the front door, Oliver's rapid, pounding heart became tranquil after seeing Sophia's smile.
Oliver smiled at Sophia as her emerald eyes dragged him closer to her face. "Oh." He stared at her with a calm, delicate gaze.
"Hi," Sophia beamed.
Oliver then glanced at Sophia's back and saw her parents. "Oh, good morning," Oliver greeted them with a warm welcome.
"Good morning, dear. Is Layla here?" Amelia asked as she stepped in.
Layla and Alexander emerged from the dining room.
"I think they're here," Alexander murmured as he walked out of the dining room with his wife.
Layla quickly rushed towards her friend with open arms. "Amelia!" Layla called.
"Layla!" Amelia approached Layla and hugged her. "I have lots of something to tell you."
"Gossips?" Alexander guessed with his hands on his back.
"Even better!" Amelia replied. "Come on!"
While Sophia's parents gathered with the Fuers in the dining room, Sophia stood in the doorway, staring at Oliver for a brief second before entering. She then noticed Oliver's puffed eyes. Worried, she gasped as gently she held Oliver's face.
"Is there something wrong?" Sophia asked in concern, putting her hands on Oliver's face as she leaned nearer him.
Oliver's glance fell. Then, he shut his eyelids close. Oliver lowered his head, trying to hide his tearful eyes from Sophia.
"...Nothing," Oliver replied.
"I know something bad happened. Tell me," Sophia insisted.
Oliver grabbed Sophia's hands and squeezed them. "Sophia..." He asked with a deep, monotonous voice, "...Do you love me?"
"...Of course, I do..." she replied. "...But..." Her gaze dropped.
"...But?" Oliver peered into her eyes.
"...But... not in a..." Sophia looked down. "...Not in a way you might think..." She then glanced at Oliver.
"Not in a way... I might think?"
"I love you..." Sophia placed a palm on Oliver's cheek. "...But... only... as a companion..." Her palm slid off Oliver's cheek, confessing her genuine feelings. "...I'm sorry," she mumbled.
"Don't be sorry," Oliver said. "I told my parents that we don't love each other."
"You did?" Sophia's eyes widened.
"I did. And it was a bad idea," he replied.
Sophia closed her eyes as she shook her head gently. "I am so sorry. Should we tell this to the mayor?"
"I don't know... I don't know," Oliver whimpered.
"...Why?" Sophia glanced at Oliver in the eyes.
Oliver shook his head, hesitating to answer. "No..."
"I will understand you..." she stated. "Remember that."
"...My adoptive mother said that... if we don't marry... they'll disown me and leave me on the streets, and I'll be exposed to the world..." Oliver sighed, concealing his tears.
Sophia gasped. "What...?" Disbelief hastened through her skin.
Suddenly, Amelia called them from the other room to sit down on the sofa with them. "Oliver! Sophia! Take a seat!"
Oliver and Sophia immediately walked into the dining room and pulled their chairs to sit on.
"Watch this," Layla said as she smirked at Amelia.
Oliver's emotions whirled inside his mind. Nervousness, rage, and sorrow mixed in his brain, making him stare at the floor as he focused on his feelings. He could do nothing but be silent and still as he gripped his palms together.
"Kid, make a wedding ring... for the husband and the wife," Layla bid her commands. "Also... put a diamond on the wife's ring, alright?"
Oliver then nodded his head.
"Ooh! Can you make the diamond extremely big?" Amelia pleaded, squeezing her palms together in excitement.
Evan sighed and wondered, "How can he make those exactly?"
"Just watch," Layla said as she smiled at him.
Oliver gulps, then takes a deep breath and shuts his eyes. Slowly, he swirls his hands until they fold on each other. Still keeping his eyelids closed, Oliver focuses on building the elements between his palms.
Gold sparkles began to glitter around Oliver's hands, and a shimmering light circled Oliver's fingertips. Oliver then let go of his grip. Everyone in the room had their eyes wide, peering at Oliver's left palm.
Lying on Oliver's left palm are the wedding rings. The one for the groom is an ordinary golden loop. It brightly shines like the sun, reflecting every light in the room. The other one for the bride is a gold hoop with an enormous glistening diamond. It gleams, sparkling like the stars in the night sky.
"Wow..." Alexander leaned closer to the rings on Oliver's palm as his eyes popped wide.
"Dang, Oliver... that's big," Evan whispered into Oliver's ears.
"Mhm..." Oliver stared at the rings on his palm.
Feeling proud, Oliver handed the ring with the diamond to Sophia. Sophia stared at the shiny crystal as her jaw dropped. She then glanced at Oliver with her mouth hanging open.
"I... I can't take it. It's too much!" Sophia said as she gave the ring back to Oliver.
"No. I made that. I made it for you," Oliver whispered solemnly.
"Oh..." Sophia's brows arched in gratitude.
"Come on, Oliver. Put it on her finger," Amelia said.
"Uhmm..." Oliver was speechless, not knowing what to do.
Layla grabbed Oliver's shoulder as she glared at him furiously. "...Just put the ring on her finger..." she whispered.
Oliver can feel his swift throbbing heart about to jump through his ribs. Having no idea what to do, a noticeable blush forms on his face. His stomach feels like a volcano, ready to eject its burbling lava.
With his face flushed, Oliver lowers his head and refuses to make eye contact. He keeps his head down. Suddenly, he feels a soft, warm hand grabbing his wrist.
Sophia grabs Oliver by the wrist and hands him the ring with a diamond. With the ring back in Oliver's hand, Sophia holds Oliver's hand and slides the ring onto her finger. Sophia then grabs Oliver's ring and puts it on his finger.
Oliver and Sophia then lock their gazes on each other. They stare deeply into each other's eyes. As Oliver's heartbeat calms, he regains his confidence to smile, and Sophia grins back.
"Great! You two finally learned how to love each other!" Amelia squealed cheerfully, clapping her hands uncontrollably.
Oliver and Sophia lower their heads, breaking their long stare. Slowly, Oliver fixes a piercing glare at the Fuers, and Sophia leers at her parents, furrowing their brows and tightening their lips. Their parents' anticipation becomes a heavy burden on their spines.
