Chapter 12 (Part 5)
Gregory reunites with his friend. He hugs Oliver, nearly lifting him from the ground. Gregory then grabs Oliver's hand, and they sprint away together.
Oliver and Gregory ran past through the raging inferno. As they sprinted, they noticed the flames gradually shrinking until they became nothing but flickering embers. The heat dissipated, and the once-raging fire faded away, allowing Cal and his assassins to leap through.
As Cal and his assassins emerge unscathed from the cage of fire, Oliver watches in disbelief, and his eyes widen. He leaps to his feet and gasps in shock and surprise. Oliver and Gregory pump their legs faster, their feet pounding the ground as they sprint.
Cal scans the area, his eyes darting back and forth as he searches for Oliver. Immediately, he spots him and his son sprinting away in the distance. Anger courses through Cal's veins, causing him to clench his fists and grit his teeth, and his eyebrows furrow in frustration as he groans.
Grabbing their guns, Cal and his assassins chase Oliver and his son. Cal fired a warning shot into the air, marking their presence. As they ran, Cal noticed his men loading their rifles. Cal felt a knot form in his stomach. He couldn't let Oliver and Gregory escape but didn't want to risk his son's life.
"Hold your fire, damn it! You might hurt my son, you fools!" Cal shouted as they ran, and his voice echoed through the air.
Oliver and Gregory dash into the dense forest. They have finally escaped the open fields of the grasslands, but they know their pursuers are still on their trail. As they run, they encounter a treacherous landscape of muddy soil, tangled vines, thorny bushes, and towering boulders.
The dense canopy blocked the sun, casting long shadows across their path. Despite the obstacles, Oliver and Gregory pushed themselves through the dark, muddy woods. Their eyes fixed on their way ahead as they panted.
Oliver and Gregory flee through the forest, distancing themselves from their pursuers. Suddenly, Gregory's ankle snaps on a hidden rock. He then slips on the soil as he cries out in pain.
"Greg!" Oliver called out as he heard his friend cry out in pain. He ceased and turned towards Gregory.
"No, Oliver! Keep running!" Gregory ordered as he crawled towards a nearby tree.
"I'll never leave you behind!" Oliver refused to abandon his friend as he shook his head.
"It's you they're after! You need to keep moving!" Gregory's face contorted with pain as he insisted.
Oliver's eyes flooded with tears as he remembered the guilt for leaving Gregory behind in the past. "I can't leave you again," he cried as he hurried towards Gregory, carrying him in his arms.
Gregory's eyes widened as he gazed at their surroundings. As Oliver's grip pulled Gregory to his feet, an eerie coldness shrouded them, causing the hairs on the back of their necks to stand on end. They began running, but Gregory started limping as Oliver cradled him in his arms.
"Wait! Wait! Stop!" Gregory whispered urgently. "It's too late..."
Oliver and Gregory ceased, halting on their track as they looked around.
"...What!?" Oliver asked, his eyes gaping open.
"Stay calm," Gregory replied. "I'll tell you where they are, but don't let them see you're afraid."
Oliver and Gregory froze in place, scanning their surroundings with sharp eyes. The dense forest enveloped them, casting deep shadows across the ground. They strained their ears, listening for any sign of their pursuers. Though the trees obscured their view, Oliver and Gregory could sense the assassins' movements as they passed over logs and boulders.
Oliver's eyes darted in every direction, and he noticed Gregory intently staring behind him. He tore his gaze away from his friend and resumed scanning the bushes and trees around them. They could hear their heartbeats thudding through their chests.
"Oli, don't panic," Gregory whispered, staring at a boulder with his teeth clenched. "One of them is behind the boulder... far behind you."
Oliver's eyes widened. "What do I do?" he asked as his voice shuddered.
Gregory tilted his head and mouthed his answer. "Use your power?" he suggested.
Taking a deep breath, Oliver closed his eyes and centred himself in his thoughts. As his power surged within him, he swiftly spun around and swung his hand towards the boulder. The rock rose into mid-air, exposing the hidden assassin crouching behind it.
Oliver quickly used his other arm to manipulate the killer's rifle, disintegrating it into pieces before the assassin could use it against them. The assassin shrieked and dropped to his back. Oliver dropped the floating stone, allowing it to almost crash down on the foe with a resounding thud. Scared, the assassin fled away.
Quickly, Oliver spins around to face Gregory. But, as he does, he sees another assassin aiming at them. Gnashing his teeth, he sends a blast of hurtling elements towards the rifle, transforming it into a solid stone before the man could fire. The assassin's eyes widen, and he turns and flees into the forest.
"On your left... behind those thick bushes and beside the fallen log," Gregory whispered as his stare pointed at the log.
Oliver follows his friend's gaze. He hurryingly manipulates the thick bushes, bending them over to reveal the assassin lurking behind. With his other hand, Oliver raises the soil beneath the assassin's feet and infuses it with his power, causing the rifle to merge with the earth. The foe looks down in confusion as the ground consumes his weapon, forcing him to retreat.
"Where to next?" Oliver whispered, his voice barely audible.
"On your left, a bit further back," Gregory replied with a deep, low voice. "I see one loading his gun behind the tall grass."
Swiftly turning around, Oliver sees the assassin aiming. A loud gunshot echoes through the forest, and Oliver sees the bullet hurtling towards him. He quickly spawns a ball of floating water in mid-air and traps the projectile inside it. The bullet slows to a stop and falls harmlessly to the ground.
Oliver snaps his fingers, and his power hastens through him as he transforms the assassin's gun into liquid. The solid metal instantly turns into water. Then, the metal drips onto the forest floor, leaving the foe disarmed and vulnerable.
Oliver took a deep breath and asked, "Where's the next one?"
"...Oh, shoot. I lost track of the other one," Gregory's breath quivered.
"It's fine," Oliver uttered as he looked around the deep woods. "Keep looking for him, and I'll try to spot the others..."
Gregory's quick eyes search for the missing assassin. However, no matter how hard he looks, he can't find a trace of him. He glances to the side and behind his friend but sees nothing.
Suddenly, the assassin emerges from the ground behind Oliver, pointing his gun with a deadly aim. Gregory gasps, realizing there's no time to warn his friend. His eyes widen, and the world around him pauses.
Oliver's eyes widened as he saw tears overflowing in Gregory's eyes. "...What's wrong?" Oliver whispered.
Before Gregory could answer, he pushed Oliver to the side. Oliver stumbled, almost losing his balance, and turned to see his friend. Then, a blaring roar rang out from the assassin's rifle.
