Chapter Twenty-Eight
Michael hadn't calmed Angelique, but he got her to take a cup of tea and sit for a while. She kept muttering to herself. He couldn't make out what she was saying as she rocked back and forth. He understood only a few words, Rebecca, something about a promise, and Gabriel. Michael wasn't sure if she meant the shelter or her new lawyer, but that was all he could understand.
Officer Ryan motioned for him to approach the desk. He was reluctant to leave Angelique but saw no other choice.
"Angelique, Officer Ryan has some information for me. I'll be right back I just need to see if she reached Sergeant Reid."
Angelique looked at him, but he doubted she comprehended what he just said.
"I'll be right over there," Michael tried again, pointing to the front desk.
"Deacon Michael," Officer Ryan called over, "if you need to talk to Sergeant Reid, I really don't know how long he can stay on the line."
Patting Angelique's hand, Michael got up to get the call.

John and Gabriel pulled up in front of Angelique's apartment. John immediately jumped out of the car and ran towards the building and tried the door to get in. Gabriel called out to him.
"John, don't bother she's not here."
"How do you know?" John asked.
"Her car's gone. It was here when I left. I only hope Michael got to her first."
John climbed back into the convertible. "Where would they have gone?"
Gabriel hated using these ordinary means of tracking Angel down, but since this morning he had lost all connection with her. He could no longer locate her by his means. That it was most likely the fault of the man next to him didn't help, either.
Even if Angel called out to him, he wouldn't be able to hear her. His only lead was knowing Angel's heart, and that's how he'd figure out where she'd go next.
"Angel's smart, John," Gabriel began. "It won't take her long to figure out that if Rebecca is missing that Caldwell is behind it."
"You think she would confront him on his own grounds, don't you?" John inquired. "You think she may show up at the law firm and confront Henry or Danny in person?"
"Yeah, that's what I think, but I really hope I'm wrong."
----------------------------
Angelique ran it over and over and over in her head. She knew Danny had Rebecca... but where? Where would they take her? Where would they hide her?
Then it hit her.
Michael said Tommy was there. He'd seen Rebecca get abducted, but how would he know where she was? Unless it was a trap. A ploy to lure her out into the open. That's why Tommy was so shaken. He helped her get abducted.
She remembered the fear in Tommy's eye's as Bobby held him off the ground. It wouldn't be too hard to persuade him to help, especially if his own life was in danger. She had to see him. She had to talk to him. He was the key to where Rebecca was taken.
"Officer Reid. I am so glad to talk to you. The kidnappers have contacted us," Michael told him. "There was an envelope that was placed under Angelique's door. There is a lock of Rebecca's hair in it."
"Were there any demands? Did the kidnappers say what they are after?" Reid asked.
"No, nothing," Michael said, "but Angelique seems to think that Caldwell is behind all of this."
"She does, huh? She may be on to something there. Angelique told me she was protecting some girl from that kid Bobby when we spoke in her office the day he attacked her."
"She wouldn't, however, tell me the girl's name. If Caldwell also knew of this connection, this girl has with Bobby and Angelique, he may use Rebecca to blackmail Angelique into not showing for the next hearing, to drop the charges altogether, or even to make it so she loses St. Gabriel's."
"That is a possibility," Michael agreed, "but why take the risk? What would stop Angelique from pressing charges against Caldwell for abduction when she got Rebecca back or Rebecca from pressing charges of assault against whoever took her? I know I don't credit Danny with much intelligence, but that seems awfully sloppy to me."
"You know you're right, but it's our only lead right now. He has a motive. That should be enough for me to get a search warrant. Until then, keep a close eye on Angelique. Rebecca might not be the only one who is in danger."
"You got it," Michael said, "thank you."
"I'll be in touch," Reid pledged before hanging up.
Michael came out of the office to tell Angelique what Officer Reid had said, only she wasn't where he left her.
"Officer Ryan?" Michael called. "The woman I came here with? Did you see where she went?"
"No, sorry Deacon. When I last saw her, she was sitting right over there." The officer pointed to the group of chairs they were sitting in before she had called Michael over.
"Damn it," Michael swore.
"I'm sorry. I didn't realize you wished me to watch her."
"I didn't," Michael admitted. "This is my fault."
Looking outside confirmed Michael's worst fear. Angelique hit the road again, and he had no idea where she was headed.
"Officer Ryan? I hate to put you through any more trouble, but it's imperative I find that woman. Her name is Angelique O'Bryan. She runs the children's shelter."
"St.Gabriel's?" Officer Ryan asked.
"Yes, that's the one. Officer Reid believes she may also be in danger. It's one of the kids she looks after that's missing. I need my car, and I left it at Angelique's apartment. Could someone give me a lift?"
The poor man looked racked with guilt. Officer Ryan smiled encouragingly at Michael. "Yeah sure Deacon, I'll take you."
Angelique let herself into the back office door to the shelter. She believed Alice would most likely be preparing to serve breakfast, for it was after nine. She had hoped Tommy was still at the shelter.
If he were that shaken up, she was sure Michael wouldn't let him leave. As she opened the door to the inner office, she found her search would not be as hard as she thought. Tommy was asleep on the couch in her office. She knelt down next to the boy.
Although asleep, she could tell his dreams were haunted by the way his body twitched and his face contorted. Angel brushed his hair out of his face.
"You're too young to be plagued by such things," she whispered.
She wished she could read minds like Gabriel. As she touched the boy, she felt no real connection to him. At least no more than usual. Maybe this is what Gabriel meant when he said he may not be able to help her. Maybe she's become human and has lost her ability for empathy.
As she looked at this boy, she only felt emptiness, a dull, growing ache that tore at her heart. Tommy's eyes had fluttered open. He would have been alarmed, but it was Miss Angel that was beside him. He knew he could trust her.
Angelique was so absorbed in thought she hadn't realized Tommy was awake.
"Miss Angel?" Tommy said, barely above a whisper.
Angelique turned her attention to the boy.
"Hello, Tommy."
"Miss Angel," Tommy said again. He looked like he was struggling to speak. He knew what he wanted to say, only he seemed to lack the words to express himself.
"Shh..."Angelique soothed, "it's all right. Let the words come, Tommy. Don't fight it."
Tommy sat up on the sofa and Angelique sat next to him, holding his hand. Tommy bit his lip. He wanted to tell her all that he knew, but was afraid. Afraid that what happened to Rebecca and Saint may happen to Ms. Angel, too.
"Tommy," Angelique began, wishing to encourage him, she gave his hand a gentle squeeze. "I need you to talk to me. Okay? I have to know where those bad people took Rebecca. I have to find her. I promised I'd keep her safe."
Tommy gnawed at his lip so badly he pierced the skin a little. He played a part in all of this. Miss Angel may hate him forever if he tells.
Seeing the apprehension and worry in Tommy's features, Angel began again.
"Tommy, there is nothing you can tell me that would make me turn away from you. You know that, don't you? I know those boys threatened you. Scared you into helping them. I know you wouldn't ever let anything happen to Rebecca on purpose, but if I am to help Rebecca stay safe, I need your help."
Angelique grabbed a tissue from her desk. She wiped a tear from Tommy's face and dabbed the blood from his lip. "Can you do that for me, Tommy? Will you help me?"
There was a long pause where neither of them spoke. Angelique knew Tommy had to make the decision so, she waited with patience she had not realized she still possessed.
Suddenly, the words burst from Tommy. He spoke so quickly Angelique was having trouble keeping up.
"Tommy... Tommy! Slow down I don't understand you."
Tommy took a couple of deep breaths. So burdened by what he knew, he just wanted to get it all out.
"I didn't want to help them, Miss Angel. I didn't. But they said they'd hurt me really bad if it didn't. I made them promise not to hurt Becca. They promised. They said they only wanted to talk to Becca. That they needed her help because Bobby was in trouble. Becca is always trying to keep Bobby out of trouble. But they lied."
"They told me to call for Becca that she was working at some store at the mall, and then they said when she came out that I was to run away. I ran away, but I hid in the alley. I was afraid of what they might do to Becca. She didn't know. Saint tried to keep her safe, Miss Angel. He did, but then that man came. He shot Saint for tryin' to protect her."
Angelique stopped Tommy.
"Saint was with Rebecca?"
"You'd be proud of him, Miss Angel he defended her the best he could."
Saint! Shot! Angelique's mind wanted to scream, but she knew it was important not to interrupt Tommy. If she startled him now, he may close up again and Tommy was on a roll.
"He hit Becca with somethin' and I made a noise. I had hoped that they didn't hear me, but the man did. After the four boys put Becca in the car, he came lookin' for me."
"I tried to run, but he was too fast. He pulled me over to where Saint was. Saint was bleedin' real bad and the man picked him up and put him in my arms. He told me to go back to the shelter. He said I was to tell you somethin' and if I didn't that he'd find me and that he'd do the same thing to me he did to poor Saint."
"I came, but you weren't here. Alice and Deacon Michael made a fuss, but Danny said only to talk to you."
"It's okay," Angelique soothed. "What did the man look like?"
Tommy described Danny to a T.
"Okay, what did he want you to tell me?"
Tommy bit his lip again.
"Please, Tommy. Tell me what the man said."
Tommy continued to hesitate he was afraid. Afraid this man was going to hurt Angelique.
"Tommy, we told the police officer all about Becca. You remember the one who came here after Bobby threatened you? Officer Reid?"
Tommy shook his head in affirmation. "He wants to help find Rebecca too and you know he wouldn't let that bad man hurt me or Rebecca. Don't you? That's his job to make sure we're safe."
Tommy nodded again, obviously taking Angel's words for consideration. With a heavy sigh, he decided.
"He said if you wanted to see Becca again that you had to meet him."
"Meet him?" Angelique urged. "Meet him where?"
Tommy just shook his head.
"Tommy," Angelique prodded, "Tommy, where do I have to meet him? Please, tell me?"
Tommy shrugged. "He didn't say."
Angelique sighed how was she supposed to meet him if he didn't tell Tommy where. Angelique closed her eyes and rubbed her temples if only she could clear her head long enough to think.
Tommy tapped Angelique's shoulder. "Miss Angel?"
"Yes, Tommy. He really didn't say where."
"I know Tommy. I know you would have told me if he had."
Tommy continued as if Angelique hadn't spoken. "All he said was it was the place where you first met."
"What was that?" Angelique asked.
"He said it was where you first met," Tommy repeated.
Angelique knew exactly where she was to go. She gave Tommy a quick kiss on the forehead. "Thank you, Tommy. You helped me a lot. Now I need you to do me a favor. When you see Deacon Michael, I need you to tell him exactly what you just told me. Exactly. Can you do that for me?"
Tommy nodded his head yes.
"Good."
Angelique said. "Now I need you to tell him one more thing. Will you remember or do you want me to write it down?"
Tommy looked hesitant, so she didn't want to take the chance. Angelique quickly scribbled her note and handed it to Tommy.
"Make sure you give that to Michael when you see him, okay."
"Okay, Miss Angel," Tommy said, holding on to the note as if his life depended on it.
Angelique gave him a quick smile before leaving out the back door. She only hoped she wasn't too late.
