Chapter 22: Being Sure

Jane was folding a basket full of clothes in the living room when Jack came in from picking Connor and Raegan up from school.

"Raegan, is there something you want to tell your mama?" Jack questioned as Raegan's face turned red.

"Honey, what's wrong?" Jane asked.

"Nothing's wrong mama. I wanted to know if I could go to the Fall Festival with Henry on Friday?" Raegan asked as Jane looked at her kids and back at her husband.

"Yes baby, you can go to the Fall Festival with Henry." Jane said, picking up a basket.

"Thank you mama." Raegan said as she kissed Jane's cheek.

"You're welcome baby." Jane said as Jack looked at her.

"Honey?" Jack questioned.

"Yes honey?" Jane answered.

"Why would you let our fifteen year old daughter go out with a boy, who is a year older than her?" Jack asked as Jane put the clothes basket to the side.

"Honey, I think you are being a little overprotective. He seems like a good kid and we'll be there, so don't worry." Jane said as she caressed her baby bump.

"What are we gonna do at a Fall Festival?" Jack asked.

"What'd we used to do at them?" Jane smiled.

"Well, I used to hold you close to me while we were on the Ferris Wheel." Jack said.

"We also used to make out behind the candy apple stand and when you took me on the picnic table right beside the lemonade stand." Jane said.

"I remember the candy apple stand, but not the picnic table." Jack said as Jane handed him a laundry basket.

"I do, it's the night we started trying for a baby." Jane said as she remembered that night very well.

"And a couple of months later, we were blessed to know that we were pregnant and another surprise that we were having twins." Jack said as they looked at each other through a mirror in their living room.

"It's crazy that we have teenagers now and now, we have another baby on the way." Jane said as she relished the moment with her husband, which is so rare but she is content with the feeling of his hands caressing her stomach, feeling their son stretch out.

"I have an idea on something we could do for a project?" Jack questioned.

"Hmm... What is that darlin'?" Jane asked.

"His nursery. As you get further along, you're not gonna be able to, so I thought we could start looking around for furniture and what color his room is going to be." Jack said as Jane loved that idea.

"I love that idea honey." Jane said.

"I thought you might." Jack said as he kissed her temple.

...

Later on that night

Jane was fixing dinner as Jack started kissing her neck as she laughed as he turned her around from her task of peeling potatoes, he sat her up on the island.

"Can I help you?" Jane asked as he took a potato she had already cut.

"I thought since the kids were upstairs, we could plan their birthday party." Jack said as Jane got down off the island with Jack's help.

"Did the kids put you up to this?" Jane asked him.

"No, but their birthday is coming up." Jack said.

"I know honey.'' Jane said as she went back to her task of chopping potatoes.

"Sweetheart, what's wrong?" Jack asked her.

"Everyone, including you and the kids, are excited their growing up. I still remember seeing them as my babies and didn't want to go to the first day of kindergarten. It feels like everyone is in a hurry but I don't want to hurry their growing process up, in two years, they'll be eighteen and going to college." Jane said.

"Hey, it'll be okay. I'm not in a rush for them to grow up, I've enjoyed watching them go from being these little babies to almost grown adults and it doesn't mean that they won't need you. I'm grown and I still need you by my side, plus I've never met anyone else like you and you're the most extraordinary person I've ever met." Jack said as Jane hugged him.

"Maybe it's just me who's not ready for them to leave." Jane said.

"They have two more years of being teenagers and after, we'll still be here for them and this little fella." Jack said as he touched her stomach and felt their son moving like a little wiggle worm.

"High school is just the first step of independence and I'm just nervous about what if something happens and I'm not there?" Jane questioned.

"If something were to happen, someone would call us. I know you're nervous and I am too, but maybe the kids know better than to be pressured to do something." Jack said.

"We need to have the drinking, drugs and sex talk again with our kids." Jane said.

"What if we do that tomorrow?" Jack questioned as Jane smiled.

"I was thinking about tonight at dinner. I know the kids might already know what to say when pressured into either taking a drink or drug but what scares me is them taking something that might be a date rape drug and them be totally unconscious." Jane said as Jack nodded.

"So, do you want me to talk to Connor and you talk to Raegan?" Jack asked.

"I thought about it but how about we talk as a family?" Jane asked.

"Okay." Jack said.

"I know you might be thinking that I'm crazy in your head but I just want our kids to be safe and not like in those ways. I don't like the idea of our kids being or even going to parties and not having a chaperone." Jane said.

"I don't think you're crazy, but I'm right there with you on not letting our children go to unchaperoned parties." Jack said as Jane kissed him.

"I'm glad we're on the same page." Jane said as Jack started kissing her again as Jane stopped him, not really wanting him to, but they know their kids get grossed out.

"We'll continue after our shower tonight." Jane whispered in his ear.

"What about in the shower?" Jack whispered back.

"Hmm... You better bring your A game tonight because after folding laundry all day, today, I need you." Jane said as Jack kissed her again and the kids entered the kitchen.

"I look forward to it." Jack said as Jane smiled and got back to making dinner for them.

...

They sat down to dinner as they were passing the food around.

"How was school today?" Jane asked her kids.

"My day was good mama. How was your day?" Raegan asked her.

"My day was good baby. What about yours Connor?" Jane asked him.

"My day was good mama." Connor said.

"Kids, me and your mama need to talk to you about the saying no to drinking, drugs and mostly, the sex talk again." Jack said as the kids just looked at them.

"We already know to say no to drinking and drugs." Connor said.

"Also to sex too. I know y'all are teenagers but if y'all have sex, the diseases out there today are far worse than you can imagine." Jane said.

"Also smoking too. I know kids like to see how high they can get with a couple of hits off a joint. I just don't want y'all to accidentally take a hit and you get something laced with some very powerful drug." Jack said.

"Mama, daddy, we already know not to do these things. We love y'all and I know it's hard but you can trust us." Raegan said.

"Yeah, we know the consequences of all four of those things. We love y'all and just like Raegan said, y'all can trust us." Connor said.

"We just wanted to touch base with you both because we love you both so much and it's good to have these talks every once in a while." Jack said.

"We know and it'll be a long time before you get grandchildren." Connor said.

"I'm not having kids." Raegan said.

"Good to know we're all on the same page." Jack said.

...

They finished dinner and cleaned the dishes as they went upstairs, the kids went to their rooms as Jack and Jane went to theirs.

"Now, I'm gonna go start the shower. Care to join me?" Jane asked as Jack smiled as he swept her off her feet.

"Don't mind if I do." Jack said as Jane started the shower.

...

They stayed in the shower until the water started getting cold.

"Oh my gosh, that's cold." Jane shrieked as a gush of cold water hit her back.

"Come on baby, I'll keep you from freezing." Jack said as they both toweled off and slipped into the bed clothes.

"I'm still cold." Jane said as Jack cuddled up to her back.

"Better?'' Jack asked.

"Somewhat." Jane said.

"You know, I'm glad we had a talk with the kids. Just to be sure that they won't do or try anything while they are still in school." Jack said as Jane was slowly falling asleep.

"I know but for right now, let's just focus on the present. It's not really our children I'm just worried about, it's people that they associate with on a daily basis." Jane said.

"Let's just try to stay positive." Jack said.

"Sounds good to me, but for right now, I wanna go to sleep." Jane said as Jack kissed her head.

"We have a long day tomorrow, since we have to go chaperone both our children at the Fall Festival." Jack said.

"That's not until later in the evening, but we'll get to have our fun." Jane said.

"Well, not a whole lot of fun because I don't want you hurting yourself." Jack said as he caressed her stomach.

"I meant us check on the kids every once in a while, while we do something besides worry ourselves." Jane said.

"I'm still worried about Raegan and that boy she's so crazy about." Jack said.

"She'll be fine honey and Henry is a sweet boy." Jane said.

"Yeah, but hopefully he doesn't try anything funny with our daughter or else." Jack said.

"She knows the rules and we'll be taking her to the festival, not him. I'm not that crazy." Jane said.

"I know but I don't want anything happening." Jack said.

"And it won't, not on our watch." Jane said.

"It better not." Jack said.

"It won't honey, now let's get some sleep." Jane said.

"Okay. I love you." Jack said as he kissed her.

"I love you too honey." Jane said as they went to sleep.
