Chapter 16: First Date!
Raegan held onto Jane as if she was walking on the the thinnest rope as if it were about to break when Jack and Connor walked behind them as Henry looked up at them, more nervous than Raegan was.
"You must be Henry, I'm Jane. Raegan's mama and this is Jack, my husband and Raegan's daddy."
"Hey! You forgot about me." Connor said.
"And Connor's daddy too." She said as he went upstairs.
"I know, they both favor him."
"Yeah, my children don't favor me at all. They got all the looks from their father."
"And the hot tempers and attitudes from their mother." Jack said.
"Well, are we ready to go?" Raegan asked.
"Yes!" They all said in unison.
...
They soon arrived at their local Italian restaurant as they were seated and they all got to know one another.
"Who's idea was it for the double date?"
"It was mine, sir.'' Henry said nervously.
"I'm surprised because it's unusual for a young man to ask the parents of the young lady he hopes to ask to be his girlfriend to dinner."
"I'm not like most of the guys in my high school."
"You seem like a nice boy."
"Looks can be deceiving though." Jack said as Jane looked at the menu.
"Daddy, please be nice."
"Oh, I'm being nice baby, but that's as far as I'll go with that."
"Sorry, he's just worried like always."
"Well, you're my little girl and I don't want you getting hurt."
"Darling, let's just enjoy the evening and not ruining our daughter's first date because you keep giving him the stare down."
"I can't help it baby."
"Just relax." Jane said as she caressed his thigh when the waitress came by to take their orders.
She took their orders as they seemed to be having a great time, laughing as both Jack and Jane told them about when they were dating.
"To be fair, I believe it was me who wanted to kiss her that night but her daddy was standing on the front porch."
"And it was our second date and you know the rule on the first one, if you kiss then you'll have bad luck."
"You will?" Raegan asked.
"Yes, your grandmother told me that on our first date."
"When you first met, did you feel anything for each other?"
"I did." Jack said.
"I thought he was handsome and not like all the other guys, but the downside of that was, he was dating someone I was not particularly fond of."
"Who was she?"
"Your chemistry teacher." Jack said as Jane sighed and looked away.
"Eww... Who would date her? She's mean." Henry said.
"I've always wondered the same thing."
"But she's married and has children."
"She's never liked me and when he asked me out on a date after they broke up, she was mad and still is to this day. I can't even go in her classroom to ask about yours and your brother's grades without her turning into full on bitch mode." Jane said as Jack looked at her.
"Why don't we change the subject?"
"Sounds good." Henry said.
...
They ate and went over to the Pie Wagon as Jack felt some hostility from the way Jane's body language seemed to be.
"Honey, what's wrong?"
"Why are you always taking up for Nora?"
"I was agreeing with you, remember?"
"Jack, just face the fact that she'll always have something against me."
"Jane, if I still liked her then we would not be having this conversation right now. I love you and that's all I'm going to say." Jack said as he kissed her cheek.
"Okay."
...
They sat down with their orders as Jack was still worried Jane might still have some envious tension between her and his ex girlfriend, wishing there was a way to bring them together but knowing what that will do, he didn't want to go there.
"Mama, are you okay?"
"Yes baby, I'm fine."
"You don't seem fine."
"I'm just tired all of a sudden and your brother is on my bladder, so if you'll excuse me, I'll be right back."
"Okay." Raegan said as Jane walked to the bathroom as the tears that threaten to fall slowly started bubbling up and she didn't know why.
"He has and loves you Jane, not the other girl, now woman he once loved long ago." She heard a voice.
"You don't think I know that."
"I know you have doubts but he never found himself ever making a future with Nora, well even the night he broke up with her, it was because he feel in love with you Jane."
"Sometimes, I still wonder why he did. He was a football scholar and I was a physics club nerd who did not believe in mixing two clicks together."
"Why am I picturing 'The Breakfast Club', maybe because that's what he was watching the night before he asked you to be his girlfriend."
"He did?"
"Yes."
"Why?" Jane laughed.
"He wanted to see if the two of you, being from two different clicks would match each other to create some type of chemistry and it worked."
"That's why I don't like when someone brings up our past relationships because she always seems to hurt me in some way."
"Well, she did dump a can of grape soda all over you."
"I know, I remember all too well."
"Just so you know honey, Jack loves you and only you."
"I know, but sometimes I feel like we're drifting apart."
"Well, y'all might not see your future together, but I do."
"Then, tell me something about our future, I want to know and I want you to be truthful and completely honest with me."
"You and Jack are a great couple, all marriages have rough patches because no marriage is perfect. You out of all people should know that Jane, don't let someone from your past keep ruining your relationship with your husband." The woman who appeared as if she were an angel said as Jane washed her hands.
"Thank you for the pep talk and everything."
"Like I said Jane, quit dwelling on your past and look forward to the future because you have a wonderful life, a great job, a house and most of all. a husband and kids who love you with a little one on the way." She said as Jane smiled and rubbed her stomach.
"I think I better go, I know how they are when I stay somewhere for too long."
"Remember Jane, enjoy your life and don't dwell on the past, you gotta move on and grow or you'll miss out on things like your daughter's first date."
"I will." Jane said as she walked out of the restroom and towards the table where they are sitting.
"Mama, are you okay?"
"Yes baby, I'm fine."
"Are you sure honey?"
"I'm perfectly fine baby and thank y'all for asking."
...
They got home as Raegan went to her room as Jack and Jane made their way in theirs.
"Tonight was fun." Jane said.
"Yeah, but I don't think I could get used to the idea of my daughter dating."
"Dating is all apart of nature honey."
"Yeah, but our baby girl is probably gonna have a boyfriend soon and you know what comes with dating."
"Yes, but you live and ya learn."
"If you could go back in time, would you have dated me?"
"Yes."
"Really?"
"I had my eyes on you the whole time, but we come from a generation of when dating was not so criticized like relationships are today."
"Speaking of dating, you remember that one date I took you to that vintage diner and we made out in the parking lot?"
"Yes." Jane smiled.
"What if we did that again?"
"I would love to and also remember when we went to Europe three years ago?"
"That was a lot of fun and that's when I seen your love for people and food."
"That was the longest flight we ever took the kids on.'' Jane said as she laid her head down.
"Well, considering they were thirteen, it was the longest they have ever set still." Jack said.
"Ya know honey, people at work have asked me if I considered broadcasting for some food station, but I don't wanna move again."
"What if you decided that's what you wanted to do?"
"I mean, it's always been my dream but I don't want nothing taking my time away from you and the kids." Jane said.
"Honey, we promised each other that we'd follow each other wherever life takes us and I've always believed in you." Jack said.
"But I feel that you've followed me more than I've followed you. This move was because my job wanted me to relocate."
"Baby, I'd follow you if we had to move to Mars and I don't mind if we had to move tomorrow, I'll always want you to follow your dreams not matter where life takes us.''
"I don't want to move ever again because our kids are happy and as long as y'all are happy, then that's all that matters to me."
"I'm just saying, I'll go anywhere you go. I want my lady to be happy." Jack said as he kissed her forehead.
"I am and I want what's best for all of us.''
"Now, speaking of Europe. Those three days were absolutely amazing."
"I know and once Sawyer is old enough to travel, we'll take him with us."
"You hear that baby boy, mommy wants us to take another plane trip with two adults, two teenagers and a newborn? She's got it all figured out."
"It'll be fun travelling again. We used to do all the time."
"Well, we were young."
"Then, we got got married."
"And then, we got pregnant in Hawaii." Jack said.
"Lord, I'm never wearing another two-piece again, especially after he comes out."
"Are you gonna wear one in the summer?"
"No, I'll be big and I don't want all the attention."
"I think you'd look gorgeous."
"A bathing suit is easier for me to not get self-conscious about worrying how many stretch marks I have or that my breasts are like two large honey melons strapped to my chest."
"Baby, I think you look gorgeous any day, whether you wear a bikini or a bathing suit."
"Thank you honey."
"You're welcome baby." Jack said.
"Good night darling."
"Good night baby doll." Jack said as he kissed her.
