Chapter 15: First Date Blues
Jack was in the kitchen, while Jane was in their home office, trying to get finished with some last minute presentation boards done while on the phone with her colleagues.
"We have to get this board done before the commercial idea is even presented to them." She said while Jack appeared in the doorway.
"And hopefully, this won't take all my time away because I've spent every last waking second with y'all, trying to get this completed. I hate that this project has taken away all my time away from my family, so let's get this done and email me your final propositions when you're done." Jane said as she hung up.
''Still working on that commercial bit babe?" Jack asked.
"They are still back and forth on this idea for it and I really don't wanna spend another another weekend trying to find another one when we've already spent so much time on this one."
"We understand you have to work baby. The kids and I already talked about you wanting to make sure everything in absolute order before the baby gets here."
"Honey, I really don't wanna work on this project for the next four months. It's already been three weeks of my lifetime withered away when it should of been passed to another company."
"I think it's a great idea, I mean the brand is very popular and I know y'all wanted a commercial stable enough to make sure your investment and time is really put into it."
"Well, I don't like anything that's taken three weeks of my time away from y'all. I've barely spent time with you and the kids."
"What are you gonna do if the project is not done by Friday evening?"
"I might just fire some people, because I'm not spending my Saturday morning with them when we get to find out the gender of our baby."
"Speaking of which, everything is ready to set up and in process for prepping."
"Well, I don't want a lot of fuss about us just biting into a cupcake."
"You were never into huge events baby."
"They did not have events like this when I was pregnant with Connor and Raegan. We knew we were having twins and my excitement was in full swing when our doctor asked me if we wanted to know the gender of our babies."
"I know and I still remember the looks on our faces when he told us."
"It's hard to believe that our babies will be sixteen."
"Me either, but you are a great mama to our babies, so don't doubt yourself baby." Jack said as he kissed her cheek.
"Am I still a great wife though?"
"Baby, you're great all the way through."
"I feel like I fail at everything I do."
"Well, you are a great wife and I'm the luckiest man in the world."
"Are you just saying that or do you truly mean that?" Jane asked.
"Janie, I truly mean that."
"Alright, I believe you now." She said as she loved it when he called her by the nickname he'd given her long before they ever married.
"Now, I have to go find something to fix for dinner before our kids get home."
"They'll probably want pizza." Jane said getting up from her desk as they walked down the hall and down the staircase into the kitchen.
"Well, I thought about having leftover chicken and dumplings."
"Sounds great to me."
...
They sat at the table and ate as the kids came through the door as both parents wondered where they've been.
"Where have y'all been, it's way past the usual time you get home."
"We had a school committee meeting and then, we got stuck in traffic on our way home." Connor said.
"Well, we had leftovers from last night and there's plenty left, so eat and do your homework."
"Mama, can I talk to you about something?"
"Sure baby, what's on your mind?"
"I mean, can we talk in private?"
"Well, what about your 'ol dad here?"
"Daddy, I just really wanna talk to mama about this because when I told you about starting my period, you got freaked out." Raegan said as Jane tried not to laugh.
"You're right sweetheart, c'mon son, let's go talk about men stuff." Jack said as he pulled Connor away, but all his son wanted to do was eat more than talk.
"Hey! My food!" Connor said as Jack wanted to show him the emergency packs he got for him and Raegan both.
"So baby, what is this about?" Jane asked her daughter.
"Promise you won't get irrational about this?"
"Depending on what you're about to tell me."
"Just promise?"
"Okay, now tell me what's on your mind."
"Okay, so there's this guy who's been flirting with me and leaving notes in my locker."
"Oh boy." Jane said.
"I know it's not what you wanted to hear, but you're my mama and I wanted to ask you about it."
''Sweetheart, I am so happy that you have your first crush but you're daddy is the one I'm worried about."
"I know."
"I just wanted to ask you first before I tell him."
"And I'm happy you did baby."
"Do you think I'm weird?"
"No baby, it's perfectly natural."
"And another thing, he asked me to go with him to The Pie Wagon on Friday."
"I'll have to ask your daddy first."
"He'll say no because it's my first time going on a date."
"All we have to do is ask him.''
"Can we ask him now?"
''Sure, let's ask him."
"Without Connor being his usual self and getting in my business."
"He'll go away when the topic of dating approaches."
"Okay."
"Let me go get your daddy." Jane said as she got up and went to the garage.
"Honey, can we talk to you please?"
"Sure baby, I'll be in here in a sec."
"He's on his way."
...
"So, what's this about sweetheart?"
Raegan just sits there and prepares herself for him to tell her no as Jane looked at the way her daughter's tense posture was.
"Raegan?"
"For the past couple of days, a really cute guy asked me on a date." Raegan said as both her and Jane looked at him.
"Sweetheart, I just don't think it's a good idea."
"Daddy, please?"
"Raegan, I just don't think it's a good idea."
"That's not fair! You always let Connor go on dates!"
"It's not fair that he gets to go and I have to stay here like an old maid." Raegan said.
"Baby, it's different from you and your brother."
"Daddy, you're being really unfair about this."
"Okay, here's what we'll do. You can go on this date on a couple of conditions."
"Okay, what are they?"
"Me and your mama will be with y'all."
"Now, he's going to think my parents are overprotective of me.''
"I don't care what he thinks. You're fifteen and he thinks that he can just ask our daughter out without us meeting him, he's wrong."
"Daddy, he's really nice."
"Yeah, he's just a kid honey." Jane said.
"We can either escort you both to your date or no date at all." Jack said.
"Okay."
"Alright, what time did he say to pick him up?"
"He was going to come here, if that's okay?"
"That's fine, but we get to meet his parents."
"Actually, he drives."
"Okay."
"How old is he?"
"Sixteen."
"I hope he knows to keep his hands to himself." Jack said.
"Let's hope you two can keep your hands to yourselves."
"Rules don't apply to us sweetheart." Jane said.
"Okay, well I'm gonna go start on my homework."
"Alright." Jack said.
...
Later on that night
Jack was brushing his teeth while Jane was in the shower.
"Baby?"
"Yeah."
"How do you really feel about Raegan goin' out with this boy on Friday night?"
"I'm sad that our baby girl is growing up, but I love seeing her get excited about going on her first date."
"I know."
"Plus, I think a date night would be good for us."
"Wanna have one right now?"
"Jack, I'm really tired."
"Okay, we'll be tired together."
"Honey, I'm serious. Our son is having a party and sex will just make him more excited."
"I know and I can't tell you enough of how beautiful you look."
"Really?" Jane smiled.
"Come here." Jack said as Jane cuddled up to him as he laid them down.
"Now what?"
"You said we were going to sleep."
"I know, but it would be too bad if we made out." Jane said.
"Well don't you sound like a teenager."
"If I were a teenager, then I would be wearing high-waisted jeans and big hair like I once did."
"Gosh, that seems so long ago."
"I know, we're both so old now."
"We can't be too old, considering we have two fifteen year olds and a baby on the way." Jack said as he kissed her stomach.
"Will I ever be too old for you?"
"No baby, I believe you'll never get rid of me because I think you're the most beautiful woman in the whole wife world, next to our baby girl."
"Good because you could never find someone who's got a brain and that can cook. I've seen some of these women put here and I believe some men need to learn what a real woman is all about."
"That could be my next article."
"What?"
"My main boss is always telling me to write a paper based on a woman's point of view and baby, you could get discovered."
"Honey, I have my own cooking show down at the station, I don't wanna be famous like in Hollywood."
"No honey, I meant people love your advice and your cooking too. People literally beg me to get you to come down and do a segment. I could interview you and everything."
"Honey, I'm pretty sure no man wants to see another man's wife on TV and pregnant at that."
"Who cares about what the men viewers think, I think this would be a great opportunity for you to bond with some of the ladies in the audiences who come to see us every week apart of the new show."
"Do you really want this?"
"Only if you do."
"Okay, I'll do it but on one condition."
"Yes?"
"I get to be my own boss half the time and you be in charge of this whole thing. I could not handle anyone else there."
"You got it."
"Now, let's get some sleep because Raegan's date is tomorrow and I'm pretty sure I'll be bombarded with questions first thing tomorrow."
"I'm still not excited about this."
"I know, but let's cross our fingers that we don't hurt some boy."
"Goodnight baby."
"Goodnight honey." They kissed, turned out the lights and went to sleep.
...
The next day was as expected as Raegan constantly asked about every single thing about what being on a first date was really like.
"So, what should I wear mama?" Raegan asked, going through her closet and dresser.
"A body suit." Jack said as he came up behind Jane and wrapped his arms around her.
"Daddy, go away. Me and mama are trying to figure this out."
"Just call the boy and tell him you came down with the flu." Connor said as he walked by.
"He would've known if I was sick or something at school today."
"Sweetheart, go with that red dress in your closet and pair it with your blue jean jacket and boots." Jane said.
"Finally, someone who actually understands that first dates are important to young girls."
"Well, if he plans on ever dating my daughter then he better come with a full package of respect or he won't see the light of day."
"Daddy, he's really nice."
"Yeah, well he better be or else."
"Honey, go get dressed."
...
A little after five fifteen, a knock came to their door as Connor opened it and recognized he was from the physics club, same club his sister was in.
"Hello?"
"Hi."
"I'm looking for Raegan Montgomery."
"She'll be right down." Connor could not keep from almost laughing.
"I know you from the banner in the hallway."
"Yeah, you too."
"Well, you play football and I'm in the physics club."
"I knew that from when I opened the door."
"By the way, I'm Henry Mitchell."
"We have the same biology class, right?"
"Yeah, along with Raegan, your girlfriend and some of your football buddies."
"Well, it was nice to meet you. I'll go tell my parents you're here."
...
"Mama, did you ever feel like you were going to have a panic attack when you went out with daddy?"
"Yes but baby, first date blue or jitters is perfectly natural."
"What did you do to control them?"
"I let the dates play out and see if they went away."
"And did they?"
"Yes."
"What if he doesn't like me after our first date?"
"Honey, it's alright and we'll be there for you."
"Okay." Raegan said as Connor knocked on her door.
"Who is it?"
"Raegan, your date is here."
"Okay, let's go!" Jane said as they walked out of Raegan's room.
Author's Note: Was anyone else who reads my stories nervous on their first date ever? I know I was. Anyway, I hope you enjoy! ❤
